  • "Last-minute short break for us but very glad we came across this cottage."

Set in a peaceful location and the cottage itself was very cosy with everything we needed. A bit odd not to have at least a small freezer (or freezer within the fridge) but not a huge issue if you're only there for a few days. Well-placed for the South Lakes.

very pleased that you enjoyed your stay. we go to great lengths to ensure that our guests are very comfortable. We gave just replaced the fridge. The previous one had to have the freezer door replaced 3 times as guests must have left it open & it kept over freezing. We hope that it was not too inconvenient not having a freezer compartment. • "Beautiful location for a quiet time away from the City."

Lovely powerful and hot shower; and comfortable bed and sofas. Unfortunately, some things were clearly not cleaned since the last guests - the chopping boards though stowed away behind the microwave, still had bits of grated cheese and other food stuff on them; and the front of the toilet was dirty. Though only a minor thing, I would have preferred more toilet roll and a cloth to wipe the surfaces with than a welcome bottle of wine (though it was nice)!

Owner was very helpful & informative, and knowledgable of the surrounding area. The cottage was very comfortable and lacked for nothing. The tea, coffee and wine was a nice touch. Wifi was excellent. Kitchen was well equipped. Beds were so comfy, I could have stayed in mine all day, but had places to go and explore! I had to sleep upstairs as I had my disabled Mum with me. I found the spiral staircase a bit of a challenge at first as I have a fear of heights (didn't think of that when I booked!). After going up and down it a few times, clinging on for dear life which Mum found highly entertaining, I got used to it! I now want one at home..... The cottage is an ideal base to explore the Southern Lake District. I would highly recommend it. Thank you for a great stay!

  • "My wife and I have just spent a week in this country cottage."

It provides easy access to Lakes Windermere and Coniston, surrounded by the breath-taking countryside. We found the property to be reasonably clean and easy to operate. The furnishings were both comfortable and practical. The open plan living area with three windows provided an airy, well-lit space. The kitchen area had modern appliances, including a halogen hob, an efficient fan assisted oven, a small dishwasher and a washing machine. There was plenty of storage available and the fridge was of sufficient capacity for us. The bedroom was large enough although there was limited storage in drawers and wardrobes. The mattress was rather soft for our liking as were the pillows - it would have been good if there had been the option of having firmer ones. The bathroom was equipped with modern equipment with a particularly powerful shower. On our arrival there was milk in the fridge with coffee, tea and sugar available. Thank you for the gift of the bottle of wine. Although there were many positives with this accommodation, we found the amount of kitchen and household consumables rather disappointing. We always bring our own but we are used to being left with sufficient toilet rolls for our stay, together with kitchen roll, cling film, aluminium foil etc. Minor improvements would include a draining rack for washing up, a bath mat for use in the bathroom to prevent slipping, and some shelving for toiletries in the shower and by the sink. We did not make use of the dishwasher as there was insufficient glassware and some cutlery items to do so economically. Just three knives for a maximum capacity of four guests is clearly insufficient. There were areas of the property which would benefit from better cleaning - the blinds could be dusted and we found that the mattress protector was badly stained. The owners live next door and we met one of our hosts at the start and the end of our stay.

We thank you for your positive feedback & we are very pleased that you enjoyed your stay. In reply to your observations there are 2 large underbed drawers, as mentioned in our welcome letter, plus a 3 drawer bedside unit and storage shelves in the wardrobe. Mattress is new & was described as firm when purchased. 4 Pillows , 2 soft & 2 slightly firmer are supplied in the main bedroom & similar on the twin beds. There is always a new toilet roll supplied. Previously we did supply, foil & clingfilm but as these were repeatedly removed on departure by guests so we decided to stop supplying them. As the tiles are non-slip in the bathroom we felt it was unnecessary to put a non slip mat in however we do accept that a tray for toiletries in the shower area would be useful so we have installed one & there is ample storage under the bathroom sink. We apologize for there only being 3 wine glasses as this was overlooked as there are normally 4 & there is more than sufficient cutlery for 4 guests. Blinds are dusted every 4 weeks & whilst the mattress protector was discolored in an area it was clean as they are washed after each departure of guests. I would like to thank you for taking the trouble in writing such a detailed report as we really do our utmost to keep the cottage as welcoming as possible and we pride ourselves in its cleanliness as you can see by comments from all our previous guests. Kind regards Loretta & Keith Property Owner

  • "Absolutely fantastic stay!"

The cottage is gorgeous and super clean. The table was laid and a bottle of Merlot led tour for us on arrival. The beds are really comfy, the only thing that let it down SLIGHTLY was that it was quite cold in the downstairs bedroom and the heating was locked so I couldn’t put it up at all. That being said I just popped some thicker PJs on and slept like a baby :) the shower is absolutely incredible. It will screech for a couple of seconds when you first turn it on but the water pressure is amazing!! Hosts are lovely too and only a stones throw away if you need any help with anything. Really looking forward to staying here again.

Every aspect of the visit was perfect. When we arrived, we were greeted with a lovely anniversary card and a bottle of bubbly. The cottage itself was stunning, finished to an exceptional standard with everything we needed. The location is perfect, just outside Ulverston, far enough out of town to feel remote but close enough for convenience. The scenery was breathtaking and we had amazing views from almost every window. Loretta was the perfect host and recommended some fantastic places to visit when she called to speak with us. Black Combe is definitely worth the climb for a 360 degree view of England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales. The cottage was very cosy, comfortable and welcoming. It had everything we needed. The only slight disappointment was the shower cubicle. The shower itself was fantastic with hot and powerful water. However, the grout was grubby and could do with a little clean. It's a minor point and it didn't detract from our enjoyment. We would definitely recommend a visit.
