  • "We loved our week at High Thearns, it has to be one of the best cottages we have stayed in."

It was great to be able to keep the car in the garage, saved defrosting the windows each morning. The area is beautiful with some lovely walks. We were blessed with wonderful sunny cold days, giving great views. Also we visited Grassholme Observatory for an evening os stargazing which was brilliant. I would highly recommend High Thearns and really hope to visit again someday.

We arrived to a warm and clean property, with a beautiful thoughtful welcome hamper awaiting us. The property is of a high spec and beautifully decorated throughout. All the beds are very comfortable and the bed linen is of a high quality. The views from the back of the house are stunning and the location was great. It is only a 5 min walk to the local shops, deli's, pubs and restaurant of Middleton-In-Teesdale and only a short drive to Barnard Castle. We would highly recommend High Thearns to our friends and family, and would love to stay again. Thank you.

It was spotlessly clean as well. Sally Ann is absolutely lovely and so helpful with things to see and do in the area, and the fishing. There are plenty of good pubs and restaurants, not too far away. The evening skies were amazing as the sun set and we watched shooting stars whilst sat outside at night. Sally-Ann popped round to make sure we had everything we needed and could work the Rayburn cooker, the welcome basket and delivery of fresh eggs were very welcomed. We couldn’t fault the accommodation, both in terms of comfort and having everything you could possibly want during the stay. The snug in the kitchen was a favoured place for our teens to spend the evening enjoying the warmth given out by the Rayburn whilst we loved the cosy lounge with the wood burning stove. • "A really fabulous week in High Thearns."

The cottage was immaculately presented, with high-spec furnishings and everything you'd need. Wonderful large kitchen (interesting learning to cook with an Aga!) and large terrace leading off. We recommend the slightly quirky French restaurant in the village (best to book) for an evening meal and Samuel James Deli for breakfast. We visited Barnard Castle (with its Farmers Market the first Saturday of the month) , the Faith Museum and Spanish Gallery at Bishop Auckland, plus a quick visit to Appleby. Didn't plan on doing too much so the cottage was the perfect place for restful days with a book in front of the woodburner. WiFi patchy (only strong for online meetings in the main bedroom). Overall, we'd definitely recommend staying here. A fabulous cottage in a great location. Such helpful owners, too, who sent us details of lots of places to go. We shall return.

Great stay and would highly recommend. There is a smaller cottage just opened adjacent which looked equally as nice. We would book that one if it was just two of us coming.

However, we were surprised to find that the cottage was behind some other houses as the photograph on the internet gave the impression that it was standing well away from other properties ie nothing in front except perhaps the road. This did not detract from the enjoyment of our holiday as we were not inconveniences by this, especially as the patio outside the kitchen gave us wonderful views over fields and the surrounding hills and countryside. A great location with the benefit of off road parking, lovely views and a spacious garden, High Thearns is the perfect property for a relaxing break with the family or a group of friends.

Set out in an unusual and appealing L shape, you will be welcomed by a spacious kitchen/diner with a cosy Rayburn cooker, a lovely oak floor, a small snug, seating area and the added benefit of delightful views across the garden area, the attached meadow and the distant fells.

A great space to enjoy a meal together or sit out on the adjoining terrace and take in the peaceful surroundings.

There is a sitting room to cosy up in after a long day, a cosy wood-burning stove set in a stone fire surround, lovely old ceiling beams and tasteful furnishings.

From the sitting room the corridor leads to three bedrooms.

The master suite offers a king size sleigh bed, a cosy window seat and an en-suite shower room providing that little bit of luxury.

The second bedroom offers a king-size double and there is a further twin room.

The main house bathroom, modern and very stylish offers a separate bath and shower cubicle.

Outside, the spacious gardens and terracing are ideal for enjoying a drinks party, barbecue or simply taking in the rural surroundings and watching the resident chickens go about their day.

The quaint market town of Middleton-in-Teesdale, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, offers a range of shops, pubs and places to eat and is surrounded by superb walking country, with high open moorland as well as the famous and not to be missed High Force waterfalls.

Close by, vibrant Barnard Castle stands on the site of an ancient Roman fort, and the medieval ruins of the castle still tower over the river and are well worth a visit. Slightly further afield, the Northern Dales are waiting to be discovered and visits to medieval Raby Castle with its deer park, Bowes Museum and Egglestone Hall Gardens are not to be missed.

A great family retreat whatever the time of year.
