  • "Green Smithy Cottage ticks all the boxes for a break away."

Its in a rural peaceful setting with footpaths from the doorstep added bonus is High Bentham just minutes away in the car for supplies, pubs & friendly cafe. Lots to see & explore in surrounding area but Lancaster & Lakes accessible too. Cottage is so comfortable, clean, modern but still quirky and had everything you need to hand including wifi, log burner, smart tv & wonderful openplan kitchen diner with skylight. Owner greeted us on arrival and showed how everything worked & advised about local amenities & walks etc which was a lovely personal touch. Highly recommend this cottage & would definitely visit again.

  • "Green Smithy Cottage is beautiful!"

It had everything needed for our stay and more. The location is fantastic....although you definitely need a car to get to places if you are not keen cyclists. The beauty of the countryside around is idyllic. Fields, moorland, rivers, hills, woodland ... just awesome! Delightful places to visit nearby. We enjoyed Ingleton Waterfalls Trail and Ribblehead Viaduct. The three peaks are at hand for keen walkers, and for not so keen walkers there are lots of villages nearby to explore. Here we were able to do as much outdoors as we liked and then chill at the cottage. Eating out at local eateries on days we didn't fancy cooking ... although check places are open as Mondays and Tuesdays seemed to be closure days for some. Personally I wouldn't want to come in wintertime but purely because of driving in snow or icey conditions is not something I'd relish!! Highly recommend. Many thanks to the owners Mr and Mrs Hingley for making this such a delightful place to retreat to and recharge.

Caroline, thank you for your very kind review of not only Green Smithy Cottage but also what the Dales has to offer. Ingleton waterfalls trail and Ribblehead viaduct are amongst our favourite places too. Green Smithy Cottage is unique in that you can travel deeper into the Dales, visit the Lakes or even go back towards Lancashire to the Trough of Bowland. We are really pleased that you had such a great time and could come back to the cottage to simply chill. Property Owner

  • "We loved our time at this cottage."

The kitchen/dining area was so light, clean and bright and had everything we needed. The lounge, bedrooms and bathrooms were all excellent and we had the added bonus of being able to lock our bikes up in the barn. Right on the edge of The Forest of Bowland and The Yorkshire Dales so ideal for walking and biking. Also only a relatively short drive to Clapham, Austwick and Settle. Loved it.

Thank you very much for the great review Paul. The cottage is right on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales but is also found very close to the Lakes and also the Forest of Bowland which makes for some great days out as you said. Having the barn to lock bicycles and other equipment securely is definitely an added bonus for people who want to explore or take part in a variety of activities knowing that all their belongings are kept safe and sound when they are not being used. • "The location of the cottage is a little misleading as listed in the description."

Whilst the cottage is only one mile from High Bentham, what is not stated is that the mile is up and down some relative steep slopes, via a road with no foot path and blind bends. I would not walk this route in perfect daylight let alone at night. Again, whilst the description states parking for one vehicle off road is technically correct, the vehicle in question should only be a mid sized family car. anything larger then the parking is very tight. However, the cottage its self is very clean, comfortable and a pleasure to be in

Dear Mr Bilton, were really pleased that you found the cottage to be a pleasure to stay in and enjoyed your break. We would just like to add a couple of points in answer to your comments, taking the car parking first. The off road space is based on a BMW X4 which we would class at a large family SUV and is parked in the space regularly without problem. Having an even larger space to the front would detract from the character of the property, however it is worth pointing out that other customers have had no problem parking even larger SUVs in the same space. As for the location, the description that Sykes put together is in our view not misleading, it simply states that the cottage is 1 mile from High Bentham. There are two roads near to the cottage that lead to high Bentham of which you have only described one. The second runs almost parallel to the first and is nowhere near as steep, has a grass verge along probably 70% of its length on both sides and is typical of a country lane. The second lane is quite clearly shown in the OS maps found in the cottage and this is the road myself and my family usually walk in to High Bentham. I hope this clarifies your 2 points and we look forward to welcoming you back to Green Smithy Cottage. Property Owner

  • "The cottage is lovely and the owners couldn’t have been more welcoming."

They met us on arrival and showed us everything we needed to know, and left us welcome gifts. The cottage is spacious and finished to an extremely high standard. I have read on other reviews that the gate is narrow, but we managed to fit a large 4x4 on the drive and it offered peace of mind that we could park our car safely and that our dog and small children would not stray from the grounds without us opening the gate. The cottage contained everything we needed for a relaxing stay. It is in a quiet location but still only a short drive to Bentham. For anyone thinking of walking to Bentham though, be aware that it is about a 25 minute walk - fine for adults but those with small children may prefer to drive. We found parking in Bentham no problem though so this wasn’t an issue. We felt the cottage was terrific value for money and would consider staying again.

All our questions were answered and the book with details in it was excellent plus we were given a small welcome pack which was very nice. I would definitely recommend this cottage as it was very clean and comfortable. I would perhaps like to see better signage ie a sign post on the corner if it is possible. If you have a small SUV be advised that it is quite tight to get your car in through the gate. All in all a lovely property.
