  • "We have stayed at Margaret House many times and always have a good time with family and friends, so much so that we are already planning a return trip in 2025."

As a suggestion - it would be good to have more seats outside on the patio, e.g. a couple of benches and or patio chairs in addition to the existing picknic table. Also, (we hate to say this) but we did notice that the cleaning wasn't quite up to the standard, i.e.. Top of a pringles container between the sofa's under stairs; sweet wrappers and bits of crisps under cushions on sofa; and fingerprints on the kitchen worktop.

  • "A great location with shops and pubs within easy walking distance."

Unlike another comment, the house was kept at a perfect temperature for us with the underfloor heating working really well. Overall we were really pleased with the property and would certainly return. It would be great if the EV charger on the side of the garage could be made available. This would save a drive to Keswick or Penrith and would be a great differentiator from other properties.

  • "We had a lovely weekend in this fabulous cottage."

It was comfortable, very well equipped, spacious and welcoming - also thank you to the owners for a first class welcome pack. We had an issue with the wifi passcode but that was sorted out in no time by the very helpful Sykes team - who’d have thought a lowercase letter could cause pandemonium haha! Just a couple of things to note - remember that no towels are provided - we ended up buying beach towels from the local shop! Also if you’re there in winter take some wood for the fire - warms up the whole cottage very nicely. All in all we had a fantastic weekend and would love to return.

  • "The property was very well located and spacious and clean."

However it was cold during the day and evening and only really got warm at around 7 or 8pm and there was no way to control the heating (it all being done remotely by the owners). This is quite frustrating, especially when spending £400 per night. In addition to that no wood is supplied for the wood burner (this is stated in the advert but I hadn't thought it would be an issue until we realised that we couldn't control the heating). For the record none of us are particularly cold people and don't like a hot house but it defintely needed to be warmer during the day. We noted a few comments in the guest book to the same effect and this made it all the more frustrating. Otherwise it really is a lovely property so this did let it down a bit.

The cottage was exceptionally clean and airy. Very well equipped. Bedding very clean. This was by far the best cottage we have stayed within Lake District. We thoroughly enjoyed the location and the cottage and hope to book it again soon.

  • "Excellent accommodation and location."

Virtually perfect for our requirements as a family. One or two maintenance issues but nothing really major. Pooley Bridge has really developed for the better, is a very good access to the Lake District and this property is ideally situated within it. The ‘welcome tray’ is a really nice personal touch and the children were happy to regard the house as a home from home.

  • "As we arrived the house was lovely, as the stay went on we realised there was a wasp nest in the roof and the children couldn’t play outside due to this and some wasps ended up getting in the house."

Ideally the house would benefit from stair gates as we had a toddler and it was a nightmare with the stairs especially as they are very slippy. The kitchen would also benefit from an air fryer as we had 9 of us and the oven takes a very long time to cook things. There was some cobwebs and dust on windowsills and we found an empty bottle of spirits under one of the beds and a pair of glasses. I think more attention to detail when cleaning would be an improvement. Overall we had a lovely stay and the house is very close to the lake which is what we wanted. Close to pubs and shops which is very convenient.

  • "Margaret House is a lovely property with spacious bedrooms and comfortable living areas."

There was plenty of room for us (6 adults and a child) and we didn't feel overcrowded. The location in the village is perfect - a short walk away from the pubs/village centre, and a great location for travelling further afield by car. or going for a walk There is plenty of parking on site. The kitchen was very well equipped and we managed to cook Christmas dinner there although the oven was quite small so it had to be done in stages. We were very disappointed that there were no Christmas decorations or Christmas tree in the property when we arrived - a little touch that would have made a lot of difference. There was a very nice welcome hamper which was a lovely touch, and some coffee/sugar sachets (but no tea bags) and fresh milk in the fridge. The dishwasher tablets and cleaning products were also very useful to have, and the toilet rolls in the bathrooms. There were also some games/books/DVDs etc. and these were a welcome touch. When we have stayed in other properties there has been a folder containing useful information on how to operate the heating/TV, dates for emptying bins, things to do locally etc, and we felt this would have been handy. The property is generally well maintained although we had a couple of issues. The central heating wasn't working on Christmas Eve - we contacted Sykes who dealt with this very efficiently and a call to the owner resulted in this being sorted pretty quickly although we did have to reset the boiler in order to do this which was a bit fiddly. There are numerous thermostats around the house and it isn't at all clear which work and which don't - it transpired that the heating is operated on a Hive system and it didn't seem possible to turn this on and off ourselves. The latch on the door for the wood burner needs tightening - it kept spinning around making it difficult to close properly. The TV took some sorting out - lots of remote controls, and no clear instructions on how to get it working. We didn't use the outside areas due to the time of year, HOWEVER if you have very small children, it is worth noting that there is quite a drop off the lawned garden area down onto the hardstanding below. Also the patio furniture didn't look particularly inviting or comfortable and we did feel that for a house of this size/standard that this could be improved. A big issue for us travelling as a group of 3 families was the lack of keys. Only 1 key for the whole property. The same key fitted the patio doors, not sure about the back door from the utility room as we didn't try it. The suggestion was that if we went out we locked the key in the key safe. Some of us wanted to visit the pub one evening, and this meant leaving one member at home babysitting who had to wait up for us to come home as the alternative was locking them in the house with no escape option or them going to bed and leaving the property unlocked. We do feel that this is not really acceptable. We didn't find any mention in the listing of the fact that the ground floor is on two levels - there are polished wooden steps down from the entrance area into the living room, and also from the kitchen down to the dining area. Again - if you have very small children this is something to be aware of, and our 'grandma' also struggled with these as well. Also It would have been useful to know when the bins were going to be emptied - unless we missed this somewhere? Having said all this, we would certainly love to stay again!

It was immaculate and very clean throughout; the lounge was very spacious and had a good entertainment system and a log burner which made for very cosy evenings while settled on the very comfortable sofas. the bedrooms were of a good size and the beds were extremely comfortable. The kitchen was fitted out with an excellent range of appliances and the welcome hamper was really appreciated, thank you. The house is situated in a quiet ideal position in the village and is a mere 3- or 4-minutes stroll to the village centre where there is a selection of good eateries and watering holes as well as a good, stocked village shop. The lake begins at Pooley Bridge and it is a five minute walk to the steamer jetty from Margaret house. There are some wonderful easy walks along the side of the lake and the views are stunning .A big Thank you to the Glover family for allowing us the chance to stay in such a wonderful house.

  • "We choose this accommodation for 2 main reasons- easy access to a village for elderly family in our group & a Saturday changeover ( increasingly rare these days, sadly)."

Lovely cool house for a heatwave, lots of bathrooms & very comfy beds/ lounge/ sofas. Needs instructions about refuse collection as we missed the Monday collection, meaning lots of rubbish sitting in the bin in a heatwave.. no mention of recycling at all. First place no towels provided- makes life harder jam-packing a full car with towels & yes, we get the whole cleaner- Covid thing & did strip all the beds, even so.. No welcome pack, rather measily we all thought, although we appreciated dishwasher tabs& loo rolls provided & left some of our own supply in return. You can’t sit comfortably outside- we didn’t as those picnic benches aren’t conducive to a restful sit- down & elderly folk simply can’t get their legs over them. What a shame in such gorgeous weather. The key- 2 of us ran early when others were sleeping so what do you do? Lock them all in & hope they don’t need to escape if there’s a fire or leave the house entirely unlocked- is that really sensible given that the road outside is the main thoroughfare for many people up to all the campsites & we are always careful about house security wherever we are. Not as if you can post the key through a letterbox to those inside as there isn’t one… needs a rethink & yes we appreciate it’s probably driven by previous guests not returning/ loosing keys. Such a great holiday location, take all your own walking guides & maps if, like us, you are seasoned mountain- walkers as the house has none, just novels. (Yes, probably all removed due to Covid). For a large group, this is a good property, very comfortable indoors, roomy, good parking & superb location for town & easy access to so many locations so on this criteria, we would recommend Margaret House.

We did struggle though to raise the downstairs temperature a little to make it more comfortable for older family members on a couple of evenings so clear instructions would help here. The varnished staircase was a nice feature but was slippery and there were cobwebs on the higher ceilings. A leak developed from the front bedroom ensuite shower tray but it was very swiftly dealt with so top marks for customer service! • "PROS: Firstly, thank you for opening your holiday home to us and allowing us to have a memorable holiday at Margaret House - Come rain or shine!"

The house itself is beautiful, in an enviable location with so much right on the doorstep. The living space is very spacious, bigger than the photos make it look! It was a lovely surprise and plenty of room for our 2 littlens to spread out and play hide and seek (the mega blocks were a lovely touch). The beds are very comfortable, the bedding clean, cleanliness was to a high standard throughout! The kitchen was even equipped with plates, cups and cutlery for the littlest of people. Thank you. The water pressure was perfect for a shower/bath & the bonus of a driveway with off road parking was a HUGE help for us with luggage. Instructions laid out clearly for what to do upon departure, and how to leave the house. Underfloor heating was lovely - Myself and our 2 children found ourselves lying in the middle of the floor at one point after a chilly day out walking! Locally, the restaurants are brilliant, child friendly and fantastic service, Pooley Bridge Inn, The Secret Garden & The Sun Inn were our favourites. The Big Shop With The Little Door is exceptionally cool! Very well-stocked and a beautiful gift shop, with an upstairs food hall, would you believe it! Amazing walks from every direction on the doorstep and some fantastic views of surrounding hills & mountains just a short distance away. Beautiful scenery & we enjoyed stopping at the cafe/book-shop. This was a big hit for our 7 year old. CONS: The house was FREEZING on arrival - We'd come from the cold and coming in to the house, it felt colder. The heating was switched off and it felt like it had been off for days, if not weeks. There are no instructions for the heating, and it did take a while to figure it out as some of the thermostats didn't appear to work (dining room & landing), but once it DID finally kick in and we figured it out, it did warm within a few hours and stayed warm for the rest of our stay. The TV - Oh my goodness, we went without it for 4 days as we simply could not figure out the 4 or 5 remote controls - It was a faff fiddling with wires, trying every remote, with a constant error message about the satellite connection. After 4 days, I decided I'd try HDMI2 instead of HDMI1 and ta-da! We had TV. Once it worked, it was lovely to snuggle up in the evening and watch a little something. Condiments - Now, I know this is not overly important - however we did have an evening of take-out and there was no salt, pepper and very little sugar for cups of tea too. In all other holiday homes we've ever visited, there's never been a shortage of salt, pepper or sugar. This is just a little something that could be fixed very quickly and we did buy our own sugar so fear not. ROAD NOISE - Okay so it's not a MAIN road but the house is fronting on-to a road where, the bin men sound like they are inside the house at around 5am and it did make me jump out my skin as it was still dark. There were cars going up and down from 4.30am so we just simply changed rooms (the noise was only heard from the front Master bedroom). I'm not sure if the house is single glazed? The rain and every gust of wind sounded extraordinarily loud so we did assume maybe it wasn't double glazed. The light-bulb in the en-suite upstairs needs replacing. Loose tile in the en-suite too. There's an empty packet of cadburys fingers holding a mirror upright in the bunk bed room so be weary of little fingers as the mirror swings if the packet is moved. Overall, would we recommend this holiday house? YOU BET! My partner kept telling me I'd found a 'gem' of a holiday home and we were very comfortable, any issue is an easy fix but better to raise it than not if it benefits future guests. Would we return? I think so! Sam, Dan & family from Bedfordshire.

Thank you for your feedback. We will take onboard your comments and seek to put them right. We have not been able to visit our house since last May due to Covid and a broken back so we rely completely on Sykes letting us know if anything needs to be sorted. Sadly none of the things you mention were reported to us so we were not able to sort them out. I can only assure you a new salt and pepper pot was ordered the minute we arrived this week. It is a shame previous guests had broken the one that was here. We have been told by Sykes that we can't leave sugar, perhaps you could explore this with them directly? The windows are double glazed and I'm afraid we cannot be held responsible for traffic noise. There were instructions laminated for guests regrading the television but they have gone missing. Once again, thank you for your feedback. informed Property Owner

There are two picknick benches on the patio but some comfortable seating would have been appreciated as we had a hot sunny week and it would have been nice to sit outside in comfort. The only other thing I would say is that perhaps the house is not suitable for older people. The ground floor is on two levels with steps in between, the two 80 yr olds we had with us found them a bit of a struggle. About the location

POOLEY BRIDGE

Penrith 6 miles.

The picturesque village of Pooley Bridge sits on the northerly edge of Lake Ullswater in the Lake District National Park. The name Pooley came to be due to the forming of a large pool, which was left by the fast flowing River Eamont, and the word Bridge was later added when a bridge, which is now 250 years old, was built over the river. Pooley Bridge has many traditional inns and tempting tea rooms, plus the Ullswater Steamers depart from the village, from where a tranquil cruise down the lake to the villages of Glenridding and Howtown can be enjoyed. There are numerous walks with breathtaking views nearby, plus a short walk up to Dunmallard Hill reveals fascinating Iron-Age remains, whilst the towns of Penrith and Keswick are within driving distance. Pooley Bridge is an ideal base for a cottage holiday stay in the stunning Lake District.
