"(May be published): This flat is in a wonderful location, with a terrific view and close to shops, museums etc."
It has a most interesting history - we were pleased to find all the information provided about this. It is nicely decorated and furnished with attractive and quirky items (including very comfortable beds), and has everything needed for an enjoyable stay. The owner was very helpful and friendly when we contacted him with a few queries. Just be warned - there are a lot of stairs up to the property, anyone with poor balance etc might find the wonky floors and steps disconcerting, and taller people will need to be careful not to bump their heads, particularly at the dining table. (Not for publication): A number of details need attention: we were told that the fan in the bathroom operates when the atmosphere gets steamy, but in spite of all of us taking baths every day, the fan never came on, and there was a smell of drains in the room (we left a can of air freshener!). The pull-cord for the bathroom light is also temperamental. More information is needed about the operation of equipment, such as the heating system, the oven (we are gas users so the symbols meant nothing to us), etc. Renters should be warned to bring dishwasher tablets if they mean to use the dishwasher - only one was provided.

"Lovely apartment."
Kitchen well equipped. Beds very comfortable. Would stay there again. The pub next door is nice and the owner is very friendly.

"Home from home."
. we had a fantastic break once we’d got all our stuff upstairs we felt like we’d always lived there.

"Very good flat in excellent location in Lancaster."
Ideal for visiting the region by bus, train or walking into town. The upper room in the flat (kitchen and sitting room) can get quite hot during the day if you are lucky with a sunny weather stay as we were. A most enjoyable two weeks, thank you!
Very pleased you enjoyed your stay and had some lovely, sunny weather. At last! There are two velux windows in the sitting room and another in the kitchen which can be opened fully to get in all that lovely Lancaster air! Welcome back and thankyou. Property Owner

"We really enjoyed our stay."
The apartment was very well equipped. Everything was of good quality and clean. Ideally located for an easy walk into the city and other walks from the door. One day we walked along the canal all the way to the River Lune Millennium Park and back. Also day trips out by bus from the bus station very close by, to Morecambe and Kirby Lonsdale. Parking was not the problem we anticipated, ample availability right outside overnight or further along the road for unrestricted parking.

"Delightful apartment with a lovely view over the River Lune."
The bed was really comfortable with good quality bedding. The kitchen was well equipped including a bottle of Prosecco! Due to the bad weather I read a couple of the many books on the bookshelves. Lovely place to stay.

"The oven isn’t working properly."
Th temperature light doesn’t come on, and I don’t think the thermostat is working, to judge by our disaster with a pizza. The information pack was not very useful - most cottages have pamphlets about local activities, menus from local takeaways etc. A map would have been extremely handy.
Hi there Very sorry you had problems with the oven. I checked when I cleaned the flat after the visit and all was fine. The information pack I wrote has full information about the history of the building and its previous owner Dodshon Foster based on extensive research I carried out when I took ownership. I have also included information about the key sights in Lancaster - I also work as a travel writer. There's a full A-Z of the whole of Lancashire including Lancaster on the bookshelf in the living room. The tourist office with plentiful information about the area and the city is a 5min walk away. "Lovely stay in this quirky house."
Very comfortable beds & interesting facts about this old property. James is a pleasant host he recommended The Toll hse for Sunday lunch which was excellent.Enjoyed visiting Lancaster very much.
-
"We had an excellent stay at the flat, loved the location and it was all beautifully presented as advertised and the living area was even more spacious than we had expected."
The beds especially were extremely comfortable and the blackout blinds were perfect for getting a good night sleep. The kitchen was well stocked with crockery and cooking equipment, and the dishwasher was a welcome addition. James, the host, was excellent with prompt communication and had provided some fascinating history about the property too. Overall would highly recommend for anyone visiting Lancaster, and we would definitely stay here again.
Morning Jemimah Now I'm flattered! What very kind words from you. Thanks so much for what you've said. And you're right, of course, that the house is full of history. That makes it all very special. Best from me James Property Owner

"All good we had a pleasant stay"

"A second stay here , lovely comfy apartment on top floor so very quiet ."
Ideal if you want to give the car a rest as 5 mins to bus or rail station, even a bus to the front door. Visited lakes twice , blackpool morecambe ( which is looking much smarter ) and the local countryside which was lovely . Lancaster is great for things to do and see loads of history . Brilliant stay , the cleanest we have stayed in by far .
-
"Lovely historic town house in an interesting part of the city."
Very comfortable and well equipped with everything you could possibly need. Our children really enjoyed the quirky layout and different ceiling heights! The adults appreciated the very thoroughly prepared welcome pack giving the maritime history of the house and it's surroundings together with recommendations for local eateries and practical information. We had a wonderful stay and would definitely recommend it.

"Thank you , excellent property"
-
"The apartment was very clean and comfortable."
Very well suited to Lancaster town centre (3 to 4 minutes walk). 20 minute bus ride to Morcambe. The beds in the apartment were really comfy. Would definitely stay there again.
-
"Well equipped and furnished to a high standard."
Beds very comfortable, excellent mattresses Great location , easy walk into the city or two nice cosy pubs on your doorstep. Booking process straight forward and access information from owner very good. Would recommend.
-
"Spotlessly clean and brilliantly situated."
Wonderfully comfortable beds.Lovely friendly pubs to either side of apartment. We will be back.
-
"We booked this property when visiting our daughter at Lancaster University."
The apartment is in a great location over looking the river but within easy walking distance of the city centre. We had no problem parking right outside the front door for the whole time of our visit and there was no charge which was a bonus. The apartment was very clean, warm and comfortable. The kitchen was well equipped - the only thing lacking was an iron and iron board. Communication with James was good and the contactless key collection was perfect.
Hi Alison Thanks so much for taking the time to post a comment. It's great to hear what people think and I try to take on board suggestions and ideas. Hence, iron and ironing board now provided ;) Property Owner

"25 St. George’s Quay is a lovely, quirky apartment."
From its big, old, red door to its wonky floors, every bit of it is a charming place to stay. It’s very homely, tastefully decorated and in a great location. It’s also very clean and there’s plenty of hot water. We’ve really enjoyed our half term stay. It’s also really nice to stay somewhere that has a story and it’s very interesting to read about the history of the building. The riverside location gives great views. The property is almost sandwiched between the Maritime Museum (which was great) and the George and Dragon pub next door (which was also great!). The new landlord was very friendly and welcoming to both adults and kids. We had some lovely meals out in and around Lancaster and enjoyed visits to the Castle, Police museum and Williamson Park. The views from the Ashton Memorial were amazing! The owner of the apartment , James, was very friendly and provided us with more information about parking before our arrival. We never struggled to park as there are a few options. We would definitely recommend this property. Thanks for a lovely week in Lancaster.

"Fabulous everything perfect would stay again"
-
"The apartment was lovely."
It was in a very convenient position with the town centre and castle just a short stroll away. Lancaster is certainly worth a visit with the Lake District and Morecombe just a short drive away. The stairs up to the apartment did not pose a problem to us but there are 3 short flights of stairs to climb so may be a problem to some. Lancaster has many bars and restaurants to choose from and the shopping centre has lots of independent shops.
-
"Flat 3, 25 St George's Quay is a lovely character holiday property, and is situated in a perfect location, overlooking the river, and just outside the busy centre, so lovely and quiet, but within easy walking distance of everything."
The flat is on the top 2 floors, so relative fitness is needed, but it's spacious, and has everything you'd need. Beds are very comfy, the kitchen is well equipped, and there is plenty of room for 4 people. The quirky, wonky floors make you feel drunk even when you're not. The only negative I can give is it needs more than one set of keys, but we would definitely stay here again.
-
"Great stay at St George's Quay."
The property is well equipped and very comfortable. Parking isn't a problem and it is an easy walk into town. An excellent base for exploring the area.
-
"Absolutely superb."
The penthouse apartment is very well equipped with quality beds furniture and kitchen and gives views front and back. Very quiet considering just off city centre location on the historic Riverside Quay. The welcome pack was great and meant we relaxed as soon as arrived. You can park outside 3pm to 11am and a 3 min walk you can park as long as you like. Perfect if you don't drive or want a week off driving though as less than 5 mins pleasant walk to train or bus station . We made good use of the bus to Carnforth Silverdale Morecambe ( £5 day ticket) and The Lakes (takes an hour and for £12 it includes every bus plus open top busses in the lakes or £17.50 it's all that plus a lovely boat trip on Windermere) . Great food at the waggon and horses (1min walk) and Lancaster is awash with gorgeous parks and fascinating museums so whatever the weather you have lots to do. 100% happy.
-
"Excellent clean comfortable property and a great location for the city centre and exploring farther afield."
-
"Lovely, quirky property that is beautifully decorated and furnished."
Great location and helpful owner. Highly recommend!
-
"Perfectly located to explore Lancaster’s shopping centre, museums, pubs and historic buildings on foot, yet a couple of hundred yards outside the city traffic bustle."
Riverside walks, up to the canal aqueduct (big Sainsbury's en-route, just five mins from apartment). Lovely views of the tidal river from one bedroom and a lounge skylight. Quality bedding and comfortable lounge furniture. Gifts and flowers made a wonderful welcome. Perfect wifi. Owner agreed to add a mirror sometime, in one of the bedrooms, for ladies hair-drying! Free parking was always available overnight, right outside. This is between 3pm and 11am, but don’t stretch it. The wardens are active and we saw a ticketed car exceeding the middle-daytime 3 hour limit. 24/7 free unlimited parking is 1 min drive / 4 mins walk away, beyond the railway bridge, for when not using the car … the bus station is less than ten mins walk, which gets you easily to lovely Morecambe, or to Blackpool etc.
-
"Lovely flat which is tastefully decorated."
Great bedrooms, with large beds and cotton bedding. Situated near to centre, the castle, a park, and the Storey building. James is warm and friendly, and was very helpful in recommending restaurants and giving us other useful tips. If ever I am in Lancaster, I will definitely stay here again.
-
"Lovely apartment overlooking the River Lune and on the Bay cycle track."
The generous welcome pack was very much appreciated as was the good selection of local history books and the eclectic mix of fiction and non fiction. 25 St George’s Quay has an interesting history and the owner has provided information and more can be found in the Maritime Museum two doors away. Lancaster Castle is only 10 mins walk and the guided tour was excellent as was Atkinsons coffee. We thoroughly enjoyed our week and if we visit Lancaster again we would definitely stay at this apartment.
-
"Lovely apartment."
Great location to city centre only a short walk away. Beautifully decorated throughout and amazing comfortable beds. We had a brilliant week and would definitely return. Really appreciated the welcome basket and milk in the fridge when we arrived. You can park a few minutes walk away for free which was not an issue.
-
"A very enjoyable and comfortable few days."
The location is ideal. Parking was easy. We just parked up and didn't use the car again. As it was the Christmas period most places were closed but we were still able to visit the castle, enjoy a special meal at Quite Simply French ( just two doors away) and enjoy walks alongside the river. We appreciated the extras like fresh flowers, magazines and biscuits.
-
"It was a lovely quirky property."
The facilities are easy to access. We will use it again. Great meal at the Waggon and Horses. Fantastic to watch the river. Notes I have loaded the "Now" app onto the smart TV it worked well. NOT FOR Public consumption as they are very very minor points: There are no deep cereal dishes; There is no lighting over the dining table; The main light in the lounge is beautiful but ineffective. The lock to the door is very fiddly to close; The bathroom has no heating in it.
Hi Adrian Glad you enjoyed your stay - welcome back! I hear what you say about lighting at the dinner table and I have now provided a third standing light for use there or, indeed, elsewhere. And, yes, you're right the beautiful overhead light is part of the design rather than practicality! Heating in the bathroom is provided by the enormous circular towel rail rather than an electric radiator for safety reasons. Property Owner
-
"The flat was very comfortable and well appointed."
It is in a good location, close to the town center and with good restaurants a few doors away, plus a quiet real ale pub next door. The riverside walkway and cycle track are easily accessible from the flat which will take you conveniently to the supermarket or further upstream to the Lune Aquaduct. Behind the flat is a path up to the Priory Church, a gem of a building. Lancaster's one way system is a nightmare to the uninitiated and better guidance on which lane to be in and when to change lane would be helpful. A parking permit, for the Council car park behind the flat, would have been great.
Thanks for your very kind comments! Much appreciated. Frustratingly, Lancaster council ties parking permits for St George's Quay car park to individual registration plates so it's not possible to get a permit for any car. Property Owner
-
"The apartment exceeded expectations."
It was light and bright with wonderful views over the river Lune. The apartment has been renovated to a high standard and the furnishings were comfortable. Big comfortable beds with gorgeous duvets. Despite being next to a pub we had no noise problems. Next door are two excellent places to eat and the Maritime Museum was well worth a couple of hours, and lots of walks from the doorstep. A large Sainsburys a short walk away as is the City centre with all the shops. Excellent.
-
"We loved the flat, very historical and quirky, well equipped and very comfortable beds."
The flat is ideally placed for discovering Lancaster, we walked miles, it also has easy access to trains, buses and taxis, we didn’t use our car once.
-
"Really enjoyed our stay here."
This is a 2nd and 3rd floor upside down duplex in a lovely old listed building on the quayside. Quirky and characterful, creaky and wonky!! 10 out of 10 for comfort, I counted 14 cushions and 8 pillows! The bedding was sublime and the bed the comfiest I’ve ever slept in. I had the room at the back overlooking the park. Lots of storage and great quality furnishings. The apartment is a credit to the owner. The area around Lancaster is really lovely with lots to see and do. The city itself has lots of beautiful buildings but does look tatty in places. Overall I’d highly recommend a stay here.
-
"Central location making it easy to get places."
Parking was spot on. The flat had everything we could possibly have needed. Excellent!
-
"This is a lovely apartment - comfortable and well furnished, just a short walk from Lancaster City Centre, and overlooking the River Lune."
Sadly, Lancaster itself is looking a bit run down these days, but there is plenty to see in the surrounding area.
-
"We had a comfortable and enjoyable stay at St George's Quay."
The place is beautifully furnished and there were several little extras - magazines, biscuits, flowers - that helped to make it feel extra special. The location was really convenient for a holiday by train and bus - both train station and bus station are under a 10 minute walk, and there's a very nearby Sainsbury's. Spotted a heron on the river outside the window too!
-
"This is a lovely holiday let."
There is literally everything there you need, also a nice welcome pack and attention to detail such as fresh flowers made the flat very welcoming. There's a useful guest information pack with a bit of history about the house, we followed this with a visit to the Maritime Museum two doors away, which gave us an interesting insight into the history of St Georges Quay. Other books in the house gave us an ideas about what to visit during our stay. Excellent.
-
"Had an amazing time here."
The flat was really pretty and clean, with great modern facilities. The area was lovely and easy to get about even though I didn’t have a car, the town and local attractions were all really accessible. Would definitely recommend to anyone looking for a staycation. Particularly enjoyed Williamson Park and Holm.
-
"The apartment was very well furnish with lots of towels."
Thank you to James.

"The holiday cottage was immaculate throughout and location was amazing."
Easy access to town and a great view across the river. James, the owner, was very communicative and helpful. We loved our stay here and would highly recommend.

There was even fresh flowers and a goodie basket (highly appreciated). The owner was super helpful too which was lovely.

The property
25 St Georges Quay is a charming period apartment housed on the top two floors of a Grade II listed building, dating from the 1750s on Lancaster’s historic quayside, overlooking the River Lune and yes, there’s free parking, too.
As soon as you enter the hall, you’ll notice the solid wooden floors have shifted slightly over the years, adding to the building’s quirky and creaky character.
The bedrooms are here, accessed directly from the hall.
The rear south-facing bedroom overlooks Quay Meadow, whilst the front bedroom boasts stunning river views through its Georgian windows.
The modern bathroom’s on this floor, too.
Watch your head as you climb the stairs and you’ll come up into the living room.
Roughly-hewn wooden beams line the high V-shaped ceiling.
This was once the home of one of Lancaster’s leading 18th Century merchants.
With daylight streaming into the living room through the generous Velux windows in the roof, what better place to sit and enjoy the views.
The newly fitted kitchen is accessed directly from the living room.
There’s free, unlimited, on-street parking just 1min away as well as a Pay and Display right behind the property.
If you're looking for a larger property in Lancaster, do consider 5 Castle Hill (Ref:1137519) which is under the same ownership as 25 Saint George's Quay
About the location
LANCASTER
Morecambe 3 miles; Windermere 30 miles; Blackpool 37 miles.
The historic city of Lancaster sits on edge of Morecambe Bay, the sea is barely 3 miles away. Equally, Lancaster is perfect if you’re looking to explore the Lake District, Windermere is just 30 miles away.
The tidal River Lune flows through the city and St George’s Quay, with its elegant Georgian warehouses standing eave to eave on the riverfront, is considered to be the finest example of an original 18th Century port anywhere in the country.
Indeed, Lancaster retains many examples of handsome Georgian architecture and the area around the castle, particularly Castle Hill, Castle Park and Nip Hill are considered its most alluring quarter.
Lancaster’s skyline is dominated by the Ashton Memorial, made of white Portland stone and dedicated to the second wife of millionaire industrialist, Lord Ashton, it’s built in Neo-Baroque style and affords spectacular views of Morecambe bay from its hilltop location in Williamson Park, open-air concerts are held throughout the summer in the park.
Foremost among Lancaster’s clutch of museums, the Maritime Museum is the place to get to grips with Lancaster’s role in the unsavoury slave trade, behind only London, Bristol and Liverpool, Lancaster was the fourth largest city engaged in the 18th Century trade of African slaves across the Atlantic.
In addition to the Lake District, some of northern England’s greatest scenery is right on your doorstep: the Forest of Bowland, the Yorkshire Dales National Park and the Arnside & Silverdale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, all easily accessible, offer the perfect opportunity to discover nature in the raw. And don’t forget, Lancaster’s location on the West Coast Mainline, means there are direct trains to all parts of the country.
