"Full of cobwebs and could do with a deep clean."
Groundsperson for castle very rude. Owner of castle told us she is in dispute with the owners of the lodge as it should not be rented out and wouldn’t allow us on the castle grounds but would have if we rented one of her cottages. Having said that it was a lovely lodge and when the heating went off the caretaker came straightaway and was very nice. Felt we should not have been in between any dispute

"The lodge is fab, great location too."
Woodland walk on the doorstep, 10 minute walk into the village. Village is small but has all you need and recommend visiting the butchers and the bakers, our son also loved the sweetie shop. The pizza shop is also good. Plenty of space in the lodge and very comfortable. Downside was no washing machine, which would have been good to have access to given we were there 5 days and the weather was temperamental so could have done with washing some clothes. A not cobwebby in places but not dirty. Could also recommend the owners put some hooks on the back of doors for hanging towels etc once used. Overall a really good stay!

"My family and I stayed in South Lodge over Christmas 2022."
We had been looking for a holiday home which had room for 6 adults and a child but most importantly had ground floor accommodation for my mum who has poor mobility. South Lodge was the perfect place for us. The lodge itself is situated a short walk from the town centre and has private parking (we had 3 cars) which is accessed through a gate. All the rooms are bright and spacious, many with views to the castle grounds next door (including the local rabbits). As this is an older building with sash windows, we sometimes found the living room a bit colder but the gas fire soon took the chill off. The kitchen is a good size and has everything needed for our stay (we were cooking Christmas dinner here) and is well-equipped. I thoroughly enjoyed my stay at South Lodge and can recommend it to anyone looking for a private home to spend time in lovely Appleby.

About the location
APPLEBY-IN-WESTMORLAND
Penrith 14 miles.
The historic town of Appleby-in-Westmorland lies in a loop of the River Eden and is overlooked by the North Pennines, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty with the Lake District Fells showing on the western horizon. Set at the heart of the lush Eden Valley and steeped in history, this is one of the loveliest towns in the north of England and was originally the county town of Westmorland. Appleby is nestled between the Lakes and Yorkshire Dales, so guests can enjoy the contrasting scenery of these two National Parks, plus numerous walking and cycling opportunities as well as the fantastic leisure centre in the town. Appleby has a wonderful selection of quality independent shops, cafes and delicatessens selling locally produced food and crafts. The picturesque street of Boroughgate, with some interesting old buildings, is at the heart of the town and links the well-preserved Norman Castle with the fine medieval Church of St. Lawrence. Appleby is a major stop on the Settle-Carlisle Railway, which is one of the most beautiful railway journeys in Britain, and still today many of the old steam trains wend their way along this line and over the historic and awe-inspiring Ribblehead viaduct. With the delightful Ullswater and the magnificent Lake District within easy reach, this is an ideal holiday location.
