  • "Lovely house in a brilliant location."

There is a nice drive with space for two cars. The garden is enclosed so safe if you are bringing dogs. House is only 5 minutes from the beach. Train station is very close but no problems with noise. It was very handy as train had good links, reasonable price and can take the dogs on the train! Nice views from the house and there is plenty of wildlife around. We were treated to bats in the evening and owls at night. There were sheep and horses in the fields opposite. Village is lovely and is a perfect place to be if you want some peace and quiet, away from the hustle and bustle. Also plenty of things to do a short train or drive away. Would stay again. Loved it!

  • "One complaint and is a big one that needs to be addressed."

We understand safety locks on windows upstairs, however, we could not find the key to unlock them and nothing in the booklet about this. God help anybody if there is a fire as windows are not allowed to be opened enough for escape. This needs to be addressed and I need a response.

Thanks for your message - the official guidance states that ‘the use of escape windows in rooms on the first floor is not considered a safe means of escape for paying guests’ hence why the window restricters are installed. The keys are not available to guests as this could result in a window being inadvertently left open and unrestricted with the risk of a child falling out. The internal fire escape route down the stairs is straightforward, coupled with linked smoke alarms and emergency lighting on the stairs, hence on balance, we are satisfied that the current arrangement minimises the risk of harm to our guests. • "Great location with 10 minute walk to the beach and close to 2 great hotels which serve good food and drinks."

The property is a good size with a great enclosed garden for dogs. Good size kitchen with full size fridge freezer. Would have been better to have a dishwasher rather than washing machine. I felt it was more Air B&B rather than what I’ve usually experienced from other Sykes properties. Whilst there was nothing wrong as such it felt like staying in someone else’s house rather than a holiday home. A mismatch of crockery and cutlery felt like they’d been sort from a charity shop and locked cupboards which the owners must keep their personal things in. I get that but hence me saying more Air B&B. Very firm mattress and pillows which I didn’t find comfortable but would be perfect for some. Found both sofas uncomfortable. Whilst this property wasn’t for me I wouldn’t put anyone off staying here because the things I didn’t like were personal preference.

The property is in a really good position and has lovely views over the fields to the church. Having the train station in the village was fabulous as we just hopped on and off the trains to get to Whitehaven and also to Carlisle and the prices were great. The property was clean and comfortable and would stay here again.

  • "After visiting the cottage this time last year we were somewhat disappointed when we arrived this year to find the cottage shall we say, well used."

The stains on the living room carpet and black marks along the walls don't do this lovely little cottage justice. Little things like dust along the skirting boards and a used towel left on the hook behind a bedroom door need addressing. However, these things will not detract us from booking Rowan cottage again, the owners just need to be aware of these things.

  • "My partner and I together with out 2 labs spent a week at Rowan cottage."

It's a comfortable and clean place to stay with everything you need, a proper home from home. The towels and bedding are excellent quality and the bed comfy. St Bees itself is a lovely, picturesque village with a couple of pubs and shop within walking distance. There are lots of dog walks directly from the cottage and the dog friendly beach is a 10 minute walk away. The beach is absolutely stunning, with lots of sand when the tide is out. The dogs were in heaven on it!! The enclosed small rear garden is very neat and tidy, an absolute sun trap (we did have beautiful weather). We do not have any negatives on this property and will definitely book again!

    V. we had to move one of the sofas round to make it watchable, and not a big issue but there were several pots with chips in them, there was plenty of crockery so I would dispose of them. We found the beds really comfortable and kitchen well equipped, the small enclosed garden was just perfect, and the location fabulous

We were a family of 4, 2 adult children so bedrooms were ideal. Beds were comfy and clean. Could not smell any stay of pets ( we love dogs) Already looking to book again. You know you've found a great place when you don't want to leave. Rowan cottages are in a perfect setting for many local visits to neighbouring places. Missing the kitchen view already!

Only occasionally heard the train and never at night, so don't let that put you off this well looked after property. Seriously - it was immaculate which was incredible with pale carpets and the rain this summer. We were lucky and chased the sun around Cumbria and had a fantastic week (Met office rain radar)! Only niggle was the beds - the mattresses are so soft they offer no support at all. Otherwise, provided a perfect base for our trips and we'll definitely return to St. Bees. We added our list of recommended places to visit in the visitor book

Conveniently situated near St Bees railway station. 10 mins walk from shingle beach and coastal walk onto St Bees Head. An OK location for accessing the Cumbrian coast, Ennerdale and Wasdale. Post Office convenience store in the village. Supermarkets in Whitehaven and Egremont. Kitchen adequately equipped but oven door was thick with grease. There was substantial mould to the grouting, edging and around the taps in the main bathroom. Toothbrush mugs provided but needed cleaning. No toilet roll holders. Badly stained dining chairs, and, as mentioned in previous reviews, poorly upholstered, too uncomfortable to sit on – so used chairs from bedroom instead. Washing machine but no clothes line in rear yard. In our opinion the property was inadequately cleaned prior to our arrival. The soft furnishings absolutely reeked to the point that we didn’t want to sit on them. So overall an uncomfortable week.

These were both much appreciated but not included in the details. There is not a dishwasher and there’s very limited storage in the bedrooms - the two single rooms are very small with nowhere to put clothes. The house is half a mile from a lovely beach and there is a small ‘general store’ in the village. Asda do online deliveries from Whitehaven. We had a lovely two weeks in the area and loved St Bees although we did find the immediate area had very little to do (especially as we had teenagers with us). We did find activities but had to resign ourselves to an hour’s drive most days to get to them.

About the location

ST BEES

Whitehaven 5 miles.

St. Bees is an historic seaside village on the west coast of Cumbria with a Norman priory and Elizabethan public school, as well as a shop, post office and old traditional pubs. It's an ideal base for exploring the western Lake District and Cumbrian coast, and is the start of the famous Wainwright coast to coast walk. St. Bees Head is the only major sea cliff between Wales and Scotland and is the only Heritage coastline in Cumbria. There is a fine beach and many wonderful walks are available along the clifftops, which are also home to one of England’s most important seabird colonies. There is also a nine-hole golf course in the village. Nearby Whitehaven, an elegant Georgian port, and the spectacular western Lakes, are more than worthy of a visit. Muncaster Castle is 8 miles away, as is the Eskdale and Ravenglass miniature railway. Cockermouth, the birth place of Wordsworth, and Keswick on Derwentwater are also within easy driving distance.
