  • "Only stay here if you love trains and gardening The property is right on the train station (I believe that it may have been an old waiting room)."

The steps to the front door are steep and the hand rail does not feel very sturdy so please beware if you are not good with steps On entering the property there was a strange smell we were not sure whether it was a dog smell or a damp smell either way with the help of a few air fresheners the smell soon disappeared In the main, the house is a bit dated (see photo of hall) apart from the bathroom which has a great shower cubicle. The bathroom window is strangely in the shower cubicle and you cant help but feel that you can be seen from the station platform which must be less than a metre away (if you sing in the shower please remember to close the window or risk the wrath of the waiting passengers

  • "An up to date welcome pack with local info and information on how to operate appliances, ie."

Cooker, microwave, Netflix (there were remote controls but no obvious appliances) It was unclear how to access the bin and wasn’t until the third day when we stumbled across the key. Also as two average size adults we found the bed to be too small and quite uncomfortable. The 9 am leaving time is also a bit early so we left the day before. Overall though we enjoyed our stay and while we probably won’t return we would not hesitate to recommend it to others.

Rang owner who said she thought the cleaners would have been there by now and that something had come up. We then had to sit in the lower back garden with our dogs, no food or drinks after a 5 hour journey, whilst the cleaner (who turned up with 3 kids) cleaned the cottage (she had already done her shift that morning so was called out!) She told us it wasnt due for cleaning til monday as no one was booked in! Pluses for the cottage... Good size Good selection of games Negatives... Not cleaned No instructions on how to use oven or list of where things were Not enough selection of utensils No welcome pack No bbq as listed Dog mess in lower garden Sun terrace smelt of dog pee and had weeds Sun terrace VERY overlooked by neighbours in their back gardens!!! • "The location of the property was ideal for the coast and it has character."

It was comfortable for a stay in February being warm and well insulated. We could shop easily by car at Whitehaven. What was disappointing was the lack of a 'welcome pack' with some basic information which we have invariably found elsewhere. For example, there were no instructions about if / when the waste had to be put out and no black bin bags. The recycling bins were pretty full. There was one loo roll and no kitchen roll, which seemed a bit tight. We had brought clingfilm and parchment etc. There was no potato peeler but there was a cheese slicer. There was no catch on the door to the shower room / loo. There were too many E-mails from Sykes including one reminding us to tidy up on the last day and leave on time.

  • "Clean, tidy, well equipped with crockery, cutlery etc but no toilet roll."

Next to the railings station so great for getting about. Ten/fifteen minutes walk from the beach which has a great cafe. Visitors may want to be aware that St Bees itself has no cafes, or takeaways and only one small shop. Suggestions for owner - provide loo roll, dishwasher tabs and scissors, fix the gate and provide a security light outside so when arriving in the dark you can see the key box!

  • "Disappointing."

Property smaller than expected and in need of some TLC inside and some more serious work exteriorly. The outside area was in dire need of weeding and tidying up. The "garden" was a small patch of bare grass and weeds, the fence separating it from the railway platform was dilapidated. The front of the property was gravelled, with an old wheelbarrow also full of weeds. Our biggest disappointment was the entrance to the property - 7 steep, deep steps leading to the front door, 5 to the rear entrance ( which had not been cleaned for a very long time). The description of the property needs to make clear this property is not suitable for the elderly, disabled or visually impaired. We left a day early!

  • "Disappointed with standard of cottage."

No welcome pack at all. Half a toilet roll, no dish cloth, one old tatty tea towel, these have always been supplied in previous cottages. Garden very neglected would not want to sit out, window next to bed would not close, lucky it was warm weather. Such a shame as the cottage is great if you want to travel round on the train, its very central in the village for the local shop and pubs and only 15 minutes' walk to the beach .Cottage owners really need to sort things out.

The kitchen is well equipped, the shower is great, and the settees are comfy. It's mostly clean (the patio windows need a clean) so too, the bathroom shelf. It just lacks a bit of TLC. I hope the owners take note because it is a great little property.

On arrival found the house clean, tidy and well presented. Rooms weres all well furnished and very comfortable. Loved the sun room at the back. Kitchen had everything that would be needed, however we ate out on this occasion. Only feedback would be the broken gate, the outside light not working and a loose step upto the front entrance. But we soon worked round these issues. One other thing was, we couldn't find were any recycling bins but again not a problem as we took ours back home to to deal with. Rooms were clean and tidy. Sun lounge was very restful to read and relax in. Patio area was good and as we had lovely weather, we used it a lot. Being next to the railway station and as Station House had been converted from the Waiting Room, we were not surprised to hear the trains but they were not intrusive, as they only ran about one or two an hour, finishing 9.30 pm. If you enjoy walking the cottage is ideally situated. We enjoyed going to the beaches at St Bees and Seascale which we thoroughly enjoyed. After being in lockdown for nearly 2 years, we wanted to relax and enjoy the freedom, which we found this holiday gave us. Val and Babs -[ September 2021

Yes there was slight wobble in the main bedroom wardrobe but no need to live out of a suitcase. We found the place to be clean and tidy. It is ideally situated being only a 5/10 minute walk from the coast and within easy travelling distance to the lakes and mountains. I felt this accommodation was value for money with all the mod cons, there were four of us in our party and found the property to be very spacious as we did not feel we were living on top of one and other. I would certainly recommend to friends and family. Mr Whitelaw August 2021

  • "Positives to start- its a great location, parking is easy, the shower is good and the sofa is comfortable."

However: We arrived tired from a long journey and unfortunately the cottage had not been deep cleaned, we thought this was a necessity due to covid. There was underwear from the previous occupants in a drawer, dirty glasses, kitchen top was dirty, crumbs and dirt in the cutlery drawer and many cobwebs. We complained to Sykes however they weren’t bothered at all, initially we didn't even receive an apology. This property is not 4 stars - none of the decor matches, towels and linen is dated, the flooring in the hall hasn't been fitted properly, the wardrobes wobble if you open the doors (we lived out of the suitcase for a week) many of the walls and doors have marks, splatters or paint missing. We certainly felt the cottage was overpriced.

We loved the outside terrace, the rooms were comfortable, the bathroom had a great shower, the area was lovely. If anything marred our stay it was the smaller details. We could not find instructions for the cooker, the tin opener was difficult to use, (ok so it was only a tin of beans), and we found the fridge door kept coming open. The cupboard where the cleaning equipment was stores was a bit of a jumble, and because of covid we did not know how long it was since it had been cleaned, and were hesitant to use some of the equipment. The beds are so comfortable and the cleanliness of the cottage was excellent. This cottage is central to areas of interest, giving you the best of both worlds of a beach holiday, and visiting the lakes and mountains. Great walks to take dogs on. Station house is close to the beach (5-8 minute walk) there are pubs with good menus and they also offer an evening delivery service. whitehaven and Egremont are a car drive away, oh, there is also a lovely beach cafe, a very good play area for children with picnic benches to sit on and watch the children play.

You can hardly hear the trains and they do stop early evening so no disruption from them at all. The shower was brilliant. The garden on the other hand was unusable. Totally overgrown which was a shame as my daughter would of loved to play in there. The house does also have a damp smell going though out it. The bathroom is the most damp of the rooms. The property

A piece of locomotive history, this former Station Waiting Room dating back to 1848 was converted in the 1930s into a dwelling with sympathetic internal modernisation.

Maintaining its timbered Furness railway structure, the property offers spacious accommodation with the addition of an extension incorporating a private balcony; now a truly, unique and beautiful holiday property.

The timber-clad exterior has been carefully preserved and Station House still retains its chocolate box charm.

Ideally located on the Cumbrian Coast in the popular village of St Bees at the start of the Coast to Coast Walk, and just a few miles from the Lake District National Park with all the major tourist sites within easy distance. Inside, Station House has been lovingly decorated to create a warm and welcoming space.

The lounge comes complete with plush sofas and a log-effect electric heater, perfect for nights curled up in front of the wall-mounted TV.

The kitchen/diner is decorated in a light and airy country style, you'll find everything you need for self-catering holiday.

Leading from the kitchen is the bathroom, complete with walk in shower.

The sun lounge is another comfortable place to relax, with doors opening out to the patio and garden.

Leading on from the living areas are the bedrooms, the first being a double room boasting space for a cot, and the second bedroom offers two single beds.

Outside there is ample parking space, and a well-proportioned garden with furniture and a barbecue.

The station is a stop on the scenic Cumbrian Coast Line south-west of Carlisle, adjacent to the property is a manned signal box and a level crossing.

Located in the centre of the village with all the local amenities close by, this is often the start for many walking enthusiasts beginning the Coast to Coast walk. The village is just south of St Bees Head, which is the most westerly point of Cumbria and only 50 miles from the Scottish border, offering a dog-friendly beach to spend a day with your canine companion.

The Georgian town of Whitehaven is five miles to the north and is known as one of the 40 Gem Towns of England.

Just 15 miles south, Ravenglass is a quiet, coastal village with picturesque coastal walks.

The Ravenglass and Eskdale Steam Railway is a 15-inch narrow gauge heritage track and the seven-mile line runs from Ravenglass to Dalegarth Station near Boot, in the Valley of Eskdale, in the Lake District.

The Station House is a homely, unique and beautiful chocolate box cottage ideal for couples or families looking for a characterful base from which to explore the Western Lake District and coast.

About the location

ST BEES

Whitehaven 5 miles.

St. Bees is an historic seaside village on the west coast of Cumbria with a Norman priory and Elizabethan public school, as well as a shop, post office and old traditional pubs. It's an ideal base for exploring the western Lake District and Cumbrian coast, and is the start of the famous Wainwright coast to coast walk. St. Bees Head is the only major sea cliff between Wales and Scotland and is the only Heritage coastline in Cumbria. There is a fine beach and many wonderful walks are available along the clifftops, which are also home to one of England’s most important seabird colonies. There is also a nine-hole golf course in the village. Nearby Whitehaven, an elegant Georgian port, and the spectacular western Lakes, are more than worthy of a visit. Muncaster Castle is 8 miles away, as is the Eskdale and Ravenglass miniature railway. Cockermouth, the birth place of Wordsworth, and Keswick on Derwentwater are also within easy driving distance.
