  • "We had a nice few days stay at Parsley Cottage at the end of the Summer holidays."

The property is well located for an easy drive to Lancaster and just beyond to Morecambe. The on-site garden centre was lovely and a nice place to get a coffee (our 7yo loved playing with the resident cats!). The property was comfortable and clean (though as a barn conversion in the middle of the countryside, you do need to overlook the odd cobweb or two) but it was a shame that the grass in the enclosed garden hadn't been cut which meant we didn't make the most of the space. Agree with other reviews that the towels are on the small side and the Wifi is a bit patchy... not deal breakers, but should be quick-fixes to improve the guest experience.

There is adjacent parking and its own private, out-door space overlooking a paddock then towards distant woodland. A quiet, rural location, just over 3 miles from Lancaster. All this and dog-friendly too. (There are sheep in the environs, so it’s essential you keep control of dog.) Our stay was in February, so our weather expectations were realistic and we took wellies, so we could access the Lune Estuary Coastal Path by a tramp through the campsite and the adjoining fields - although you can drive to the coast path car park right at the end of Corricks Lane, just down the road.

The area is ideal and is on the grounds of Ashton Hall a garden centre and golf course. A walk through the camp site and small woodland takes you onto an estuary which is quite spectacular. The host was very helpful when guiding me to the address, it would've been better if I had put the address into the satnav instead of the postcode as I ended up in a wrong village over an hour away. The sheep at the back of the garden are very friendly, it would have been nice for them to have a shelter from the rain and storm.

  • "Clean and comfortable property in good location."

We were four adults and found that whilst a dishwasher is provided having only four china side plates / dessert bowls and only six pieces of some cutlery and three teaspoons meant it requires to be run after every mealtime unless you want to wash up. We only had 3 useable wine glasses fourth being cracked. On request 6 tumblers and three teaspoons were left in the property when we were out. Lack of ovenware to cook in just two casserole dish lids. Had to buy a dish to be able to cook one night. No privacy using the ensuite as door can’t be shut because it is severely warped. Cooker hood fan doesn’t work. Both these defects were reported previously judging by previous comments but still remain unfixed. Height in ensuite is severely restricted men can’t stand to use the toilet. Whilst owners will say contact us if anything is not right it should not be necessary to ask for more china or cutlery as this is everyday essential items and should be checked between guests stays and replaced accordingly.

  • "The cottage feels quite private and there was room for 6 large cars to service the 3 cottages."

It was very quiet except for the odd few woofs from the neighboring cottages and there are 3 caravan club pitches at the end of the paddock but we never heard a peep from them. Plenty of space in the living area which feels a little bare with slightly less furniture than on the photos at the time of booking. Kitchen/diner was well equipped with a whole host of stuff that I am sure other people use.......only 6 forks though and with only two pint glasses, any drinkers would need to share! We ended up getting more forks, glasses and buying a new frying pan too as though they did supply 2, neither were very "non-stick" any more. The instructions for the electric hob are in the cupboard - you will need them - the hob is a classic case of tech over complicating things. We would have liked to read up on Ashton Hall and some of the other interesting buildings too but we didn't find any guest book or visitor information on the surrounding area. You can walk to the estuary but we had to work out how to get there from satellite photos and google maps. A map would have been great, especially for the less tech savvy again but there wasn't one that we found. The WIFI was OK most of the time. I think we have been spoilt by our own super fast broadband as theirs did drop out quite a bit which was a pain for casting our Oculus to the TV. We chose the cottage because it had a paddock at the back which was supposed to be shared between the 3 cottages but there was no gate access to the paddock from our cottage. As there were two very old ponies and 2 sheep in there our Border Collie didn't get the space to run that we thought she would. Cottage info needs updating so that it doesn't say you can access the paddock but rather you can look out into it. Extractor hood above the hob lit up but didnt seem to extract any moisture which seemed to make its way upstairs hence why the upstairs bathroom door is so warped it doesnt shut. Toilet seat in downstairs bathroom was a little loose. We advised the person that knocked on our door at 9.54am on leaving day of both of these issues. Washing machine is shared for the property with the other cottages, there was a drying machine in there too without a plug on it but they had supplied a washing hanging rack in our cottage which probably adds to that warped door issue again. Drying clothes in solid brick structures just leads to moisture issues. I am always a bit concerned leaving expensive walking kit in shared facilities but it was all ok. TV was not tuned into any TV channels when we arrived and the TV antennae was unplugged. Ideally we would put our kid in front of the TV whilst we unloaded the car and put stuff away but that wasnt an option as it wasnt set up. I presume it was unplugged and wiped by the last guests to unlink their accounts - some less tech savvy guests may struggle to re-tune with no TV instructions to hand. High ceilings meant that sound travelled up to the upstairs bedroom so we had to be quiet till our kid was asleep. Bring fly spray - we had to buy some - being in the country near horses and sheep meant we had to use quite a lot during our August 22 stay. Overall, it was a good location, nice ambiance and a good holiday. It wouldn't have taken much to move "good" to "great" - buy some more forks and bigger glasses :-)

Upstairs bedroom spacious and light and ideal for older children wanting their own space with en-suite. Ideal for dogs, walkers & cyclists with paths from door to coastal trail along Lune estuary (10 mins walk) Roger very helpful with directions. Excellent Garden Centre with good cafe round the corner off the drive and The Stork pub at Condor Green handy for meals. ! The 2 bedrooms were completely self contained and private which, if there were 2 couples sharing is important. The kitchen was well equipped. It was nice and cool with the curtains closed on the 2 scorching hot days we had whilst there but a fan would have been useful. The owners were very kind and popped in on us to see if we were OK during the hot weather, but were otherwise unobtrusive but around to ask questions if needed. The walks around were very pleasant but we could have done with a plan/map of where we could walk and a bit of the history of the "Estate". Local footpaths would have been useful too. The garden overlooked a paddock which could have done with some TLC, especially the ragwort removed and disposed of. Local information about doctors, vets, nearest shop/supermarket, shopping centre, etc. especially the ice cream farm who make delicious ice cream and chocolates. Local knowledge is always welcome.

  • "We were very comfortable here, and our dog enjoyed chatting to the ponies through the fence."

The owners were unobtrusive but on hand with advice when needed. The setting is very rural, with deafening birdsong at 0400, but is only a few minutes drive from Lancaster. Two tips for access. First, when driving northwards, satnavs seem to offer the shortest cross-country route from the M6/A6, regardless of the width of the road. The route in from the southern edge of town is far easier, and passes Booths, for those devoted to this northern retail gem. Secondly, the cottage known as Parsley is actually the third of three, carved out of what is actually the 'Long Barn'. After passing the garden centre and golf course service entrance, follow the road as it bends left; the barn is ahead of you. Turn hard left off the lane here, rather than following it as it bends right enroute to the caravan site. The three cottages do have name cards in the front windows, but ours had slipped out of sight. For foodies: visit the Smokehouse shop in Glasson Dock, ten minutes away.

A small dog or puppy could fit through the fence panels though but it is a big field on the other side so they would be ok but ideally the panels could do with being replaced and a little closer together. The field usually has a couple of ponies in it. There is a lot of wild life in the field too. Remember you are in the countryside, close to woods etc so expect to see the odd mouse running around the garden. The soft furnishings could do with updating, i.e. Curtains that fit and close fully, better quality pillows and cushions. There are plenty of DVDs to watch and books to read. Set just behind Lancaster Golf Club this would be ideal for golfers. There’s a lovely little village (Glasson) close by which has a little marina. There is a growing demand for suitably adapted properties for disabled people.,and such modest additions might increase the user of this property which would be of of commercial benefit to him The spaciousness of the man living room and kitchen enabled me to use my mobility scooter with ease , as well as the spacious car parking . The bottom of the wardrobe inside was like a carpet of dust, I have photographs to prove it. We cleaned every part of the cottage except the upstairs that we did not use. staircase which was filthy and the chimney and vaulted ceiling which we could not reach. All the doors were thick with dust and also the pictures, heavily coated in dust. This was not just weeks but years. The fan in the bathroom was so dirty it could not work properly. This was not just dirty it was a health hazard. The windows were filthy inside and out, everything needed painting and TLC. The approach to the cottage was difficult with overhanging bushes catching on the car and it all needed a good sweep also the doormat outside was disgusting. The cottage itself was roomy and in a wonderful location, it's a tragedy it is in this state. This is the first time I have complained about a cottage, but this was so bad. I have rung Sykes who promised to ring me back, but I have had no phone call. I won't be booking again.

  • "I was really worried about this cottage judging from some of the feedback but really needn't have been!"

The cottage is lovely, bright and airy and very spacious. Ok so it needs a bit of tlc here and there...velux blinds don't close completely, upstairs bathroom door doesn't close properly and a bit more dust than I would have liked to have seen in the upstairs bedroom. No the curtains don't close downstairs but there are blinds which do. The backs not overlooked so no problem. The cooker hood didn't work but we never cook on holiday so wasn't an issue for us! Good outside space with the bonus of 2 ponies in the paddock out the back which our 2 year old loved! There is a good sized Garden Centre 2 mins walk away. Its close to Lancaster and Morecambe. A really lovely cottage in a good location, we would stay again.

  • "We have three holidays a year with Sykes Cottages and have never had cause for complaint."

However, Parsley Cottage was such a let down! First night, the fire wouldn't start, it was choked with ashes and hadn't been cleaned out, the clock didn't work, a tie back was missing the other curtains wouldn't draw together as not enough material in them. In the kitchen, the extractor fan didn't work, the hob was temperamental, the oven was dirty, some dinner plates and dessert bowls chipped. Not a welcome pack in sight, the first time we have ever been to a cottage without a welcome pack, not even a teabag! We went upstairs to the bedroom and the velux window blind wouldn't pull down, the other window blind pulled down but the material came loose, out of six coat-hangers -two were broken, the hooks on the door 'flew off' when we tried to hang anything on them, what really ruined our holiday were the beds, they were so uncomfortable, after one night we moved to the downstairs bedroom and the bed was just as bad, so much so, we came home one day early as we just didn't want to spend another night on these uncomfortable mattresses! Such a shame, the cottage (which is an end of three) was spacious and in a lovely location, it just needs to have that holiday feel, a few repairs and some T.L.C.

  • "I have never had to write a negative review for one of Sykes properties before but here goes."

Parsley Cottage is a lovely cottage well equipped and reasonably comfortable.I might not be writing this review if the owners or managers of the cottage had read previous reviews. The cooker hood/ extractor fan does not work, also mentioned in a previous review. The oven bulb does not work which makes it difficult to see when using the oven. The fridge door is still broken so you can not put milk etc in there. The freezer seems to have difficulty with its door due to badly fitting cupboard and kick boards next to it. The sink it the upstairs bedroom is still cracked and there is also no towel rail in there. You have to fight with almost every room door to get them to close properly which must be very noisy for our neighbours. There is no bath mat or shower mats in the downstairs bathroom which makes it slippery. There is no information on recycling glass paper etc, maybe Lancaster does not recycle! It’s such a shame to say all these negative things about the cottage but with a little bit of care and maintenance it would make the property a 5* instead of a 3*. After saying all this we did enjoy our holiday in Lancaster but no so much the cottage.

Garden Centre nearby serves fabulous breakfasts and lunches. We think there should be a clearer sign indicating where the barn is located. It is tucked away behind the row of barns you see, on the left, on arrival. A local resident, realising we were lost, came along to point us in the right direction.

One or two improvements could make it better still. The garden fence needs to be made secure for small dogs, we had to keep ours on a lead. Well I would just like to say what a happy mistake it was. I loved everything about the cottage. It was a very cold spell when we were there, but the cottage was so warm (no expense spared by the owner keeping us toasty warm). The facilities were really good and I would definitely stay there again. Only a little point is that I didn't take my hairdryer as I expected there might be one. (I didn't actually ask the owner so there could have been one somewhere). However, we had a wonderful weekend.
