  • "Brilliant location for a week’s walking holiday with the dog around the Langdale Pikes area."

We found lots of long circular walks, (using the OS app and Instagram) from the doorstep. We did fell walks and lower level walks on alternate days. We got to the top of Loughrigg, and Lingmoor Fell. Weather defeated us on only one day, when we only made it up to Stickle Tarn rather than the top of Harrison Stickle as planned. Gentler walks around Elterwater, Skelwith Bridge, Ambleside, Grasmere and Rydal Water - all round we had a wonderful and memorable holiday. The cottage was a comfortable base to relax in, with a kitchen well equipped enough for us to cook a recipe box meal at the end of most days. We hope to return.. next time maybe we’ll manage a proper mountain.

  • "Slater’s Rest is a lovely cottage in an ideal location for the local Co-op and pub, and of course the great walks that the Langdale valley and beyond has to offer."

Although it is set up for 4 people, 4 adults might be a bit of a squeeze. Take nothing away this place is a little gem with the best hot water I’ve ever known as it is boiling and has more pressure than my garden hose on jet! Would I stay again? YES 100%.

Thank you for your review. It’s great to hear that you enjoyed your stay in the cottage and thought the location was ideal. We think that a powerful hot shower is a must, especially after a long day on the fells, so I’m glad it met with your approval! • "We cannot fault the time that we had at Slaters Rest, we certainly came away devastated as we wanted to stay longer."

The cottage had everything that you needed and the presentation of the property was excellent. Bathrooms and kitchen were high spec, so much more than you would need for a holiday. The location was second to none with essential facilities nearby, pubs and shop. Arrival information was adequate and so we were settled very quickly. The weather was fantastic, gorgeous blue skies one day and then thick crisp snow the next. So picturesque which just added to the brilliant time. We truly recommend this property and will certainly aim to return again. The only slight negative was the broken window in the front door. When we enquired about it we were reassured that the owners were aware of it and it was safe.

Thank you for your review, I’m so pleased that you had a lovely holiday and that Slater’s Rest had everything you needed for an enjoyable break. The broken glass in the front door was caused by storm damage immediately before Christmas so has taken a little longer than normal to fix, but we are hoping that it will be replaced in the next few days. There is a temporary fix in place so it is secure, and we did ask Lakelovers to inform you of this before your arrival so I’m sorry if this did not happen. We hope to welcome you back to Slater’s Rest at sometime in the future. Property Owner

  • "This is a very cosy comfortable cottage - we had a really nice week, despite some of the worst weather the Lakes could throw at us with Storm Debbie, and in truth it rained every day after that, and we walked every day, but we were warm and comfortable when we got back."

The Wainwright is very close and it does the best onion rings in the world, and it takes dogs (not to cook them...). It's quite spacious and furnished in a welcoming way, the sofas are modern but they are soft and plump, not petite and bony. So you can really relax there. The 2 bathrooms and kitchen have been superbly refurbished, very spacious, with underfloor heating, and excellent showers and a bath. The beds were comfortable. The kitchen was also roomy, smart and well equipped with a full four seater table. NB The car park is tight if you have a long car - (someone smashed the rear light of my parked car overnight, presumably whilst reversing out of the car park) - but it is unusual and really useful to have off-road parking in Chapel Stile meaning you can walk from the door - just make sure you pull in as close to the wall as possible. The only improvement I would suggest and it is only a minor suggestion is more coat hooks for wet walking gear, maybe in the front door alcove, although the downstairs bathroom is an excellent drying room! (Perhaps the house was too warm, that's my only other minus - the heater in the living room was pre-programmed to 24C. This was roasting, especially as it is possible easily to get a roaring fire going. This tropical temperature must be costing the owners a fortune!) All in all an excellent place to stay and we will definitely book again.

Thank you for your feedback and it's great to hear that you enjoyed your holiday at the cottage despite the rainy weather.I'm glad that you found the cottage cosy and comfortable, if a little too warm - we try to maintain the heating at a comfortable temperature for our guests but perhaps as the weather has been quite mild the settings are a little too high at the moment so we will review this. There are coat hooks by the back door and on the back of the door of the understairs cupboard, but we can provide additional hooks. We hope to see you again at Slater's Rest sometime in the future. Property Owner

We were advised not to use the shower or bath and fill containers with water. On Thursday morning, we were unable to have a shower or bath. I messaged you by Whatsapp on Thursday afternoon to advise you of this. On Friday, there was no hot water at all so we were forced to have cold showers. I messaged you repeatedly on Whatsapp but did not get a single meaningful response to indicate that you were following this up. I phoned you on Friday afternoon after eventually being able to get a phone signal, and you advised that a separate team receive these messages. As I said to you, is there no communication between teams? It is utterly brainless and from a customer service perspective, very very poor. I would like to be compensated for this - either as an ex gratia payment or a complementary voucher towards a future stay. I expect you to extend the courtesy of a reply to this message.

  • "Please note these are only very minor points and will not put us off staying in the future."

Generally the property is nice, it is in a great location, the cottage is comfortable, however only minor points are - the rug in the sitting room either requires professionally cleaning or replacing, we would go as far to say the odour (dog odour) so much so we rolled it up and stored it in the cupboard until the end of our stay, there was no hand wash, there was empty hand wash containers on the sinks, the mop was also disgusting with a very strong unpleasant odour, the addition of a clothes maiden would be perfect too, the weather was a little wet during our stay, we struggled to hang our wet clothes in a suitable place to dry, also the hoover had a very unpleasant odour whilst in use.

Thank you for your feedback and I was very sorry to hear that you had a few minor issues with cleanliness at the property. We were only made aware of these when we received your review late last evening - had we or the Lakelovers housekeeping team known that there were problems at an earlier stage of your holiday, they would have been dealt with immediately. The rug has been replaced today and a new clothes maiden has been delivered to the property. The mop has also been replaced and the hoover bag changed. We try to maintain everything at the cottage to a high standard, so are of course disappointed when things are not up to scratch. I have made the housekeeping team aware of your comments and apologise again that some things were not at an acceptable standard. I hope that you enjoyed your holiday in the Langdale Valley. A well fitted cottage which had everything we needed and was clean and well fitted out. As the heating was preset we found it a little cold at times and a longer ‘on’ cycle or a boost facility would have been nice. We would strongly consider staying in this property again.

  • "The property was as advertised."

A small but cosy house in a good location to be based. Lots of hikes and bike routes on the door stop and the local shop has all the essentials. The larger bedroom was a good size and had a super king-size bed. The kitchen was well stock and whilst the bathroom was downstairs it worked well as a drying room after longs days hiking in the rain. The wifi connection was good. The tv is old and the dvd player doesn't work properly any more. Would be useful to have a smart tv, even a small one so we are able to use our streaming services. All in all a good value place to stay. Our only issue was perhaps the amount of dog hair in the place. We don't have dogs and there was dog hair every where downstairs; on all the rugs and even the kitchen floor. There was even a poo bag left out by the front door.

Thank you for your feedback, and I’m glad that you found Slater’s Rest a cosy place to stay for your New Year break. I’m sorry that there was evidence of dog hair at the property. The cottage is thoroughly cleaned by the Lakelovers housekeeping team between each letting, but on this occasion they clearly did not meet their normal high standards. I will take this up with Lakelovers to ensure that they are aware of your concerns. Your comment with regard to the TV was very helpful, in the winter months when the weather can be mixed we appreciate that a Smart TV would be beneficial and we have arranged for one to be installed. Best wishes for 2023. Property Owner

  • "This is a cosy cottage with comfy bedrooms and stunning views."

It is well equipped with a spacious kitchen. It is a fifteen minute brisk walk to the nearest pub, the shop is slightly closer. The cottage is well positioned for accessing a variety of good walks. The shower room is modern but situated downstairs past the kitchen which is a bit of a pain if you get up in the night. With a shop and a pub within easy walking distance All the essentials were on-hand. The cottage itself had excellent cooking facilities; fridge/freezer, oven, hob, microwave, dishwasher and a washer/dryer. About the location

LANGDALE

Ambleside 5.6 miles; Coniston 7.3 miles; Grasmere 9.7 miles.

Often referred to as Great Langdale, to distinguish it from nearby Little Langdale, Langdale's name comes from the Old Norse for 'long valley'. Langdale is a u-shaped valley formed by glaciers. It encompasses the two villages of Chapel Stile and Elterwater, as well as the hamlet of High Close. Set in the centre of the Lake District, Langdale is probably best known for its mountains, from the Langdale Pikes – a group of mountains on the northern side of the village – to England’s highest mountain, Scafell Pike. Rock climbers will also love Raven Crag, Gimmer Crag and White Ghyll. There Not surprisingly Langdale is also famous for it’s spectacular views, including Dungeon Ghyll Force Waterfall, Harrison Stickle and Pike of Stickle. it is an extremely popular holiday destination and loved by hikers, climbers, fell runners and lovers of the outdoors in general.

Please note: From September the open fire will be replaced with a multi-fuel stove.

Coal is provided for the fire but please do bring your own kindling and firelighters, and matches.
