  • "We loved the cottage."

Brilliant location away from the busier tourist areas but close enough when we needed to visit. Lovely touch with the chocolates and wine on arrival. The cottage is really well equipped - it had everything we needed. We all loved getting back from a day of activities to chill - it was a really relaxing place with the most amazing views. One small point would be the shower. Water comes out at a trickle and just wasn’t practical to use - it meant adults and children having to bath. That could do with being sorted or at least explained in advance. It didn’t take anything away from the stay.

  • "We really enjoyed our time at Syke Villa which was helped by a week of beautiful sunny weather."

The property was clean and very well equipped. All standard kitchen items like washing up liquid and dishwasher tablets were included. The welcome bottle of wine and chocolates was a nice touch although it would have been nice to have a bottle of milk in the fridge- we arrived late afternoon and the local shop was closed. The overall setting of the cottage is stunning and we were able to sit out on the outdoor seating areas during our stay. The cottage is nearly 2 miles up what is essentially a single track road which might put off nervous drivers and accessing the cottage parking area is a little tight especially if you have a large vehicle. Just a couple of minor issues: The door to the conservatory cannot be locked from the inside - the lock is out of alignment The Wi-Fi is adequate but not strong enough for streaming TV services. General TV reception also a little unreliable. Despite the minor things we would definitely return to Syke Villa.

Thank you for taking the time to leave your feedback following your stay. We are pleased that you had an enjoyable stay and found the property to be clean and comfy. We take all comments on board, and will ask the Property Services Team to take a look. We hope to welcome you back to the Lakes again. • "Skye Villa is a wonderful place to stay."

Troutbeck village is in a lovely peaceful scenic location in a quiet valley, loved by walkers. The house is spacious, full of character, well-appointed and very comfortable. There is plenty of information about the area. Very convenient for Windermere, Bowness and Ambleside. We enjoyed coffee in the Old Post Office and meals at the Mortal Man and the Queen’s Head, all within easy reach.

  • "Beautiful, country cottage, like stepping into a world gone by."

The gardens and surrounding scenery are 2nd to none. The cottage has everything you need except your groceries. It has essentials like washing liquid, soap, cling film, salt and pepper etc. There's also a music system, radio, dvd player and board games etc. Beds were comfy and plenty towels. Perfect location with only 12 min drive to Windermere. There were fresh flowers in a vase, wine and lovely chocolates on the table for our arrival. I absolutely loved this place. It had charm and a peaceful ambience that made you feel like you had stepped back in time. I felt like writing poetry or sketching pictures!

Dear Elizabeth and friends, Thank you so much for your lovely positive comments online and in the visitors book. We are pleased that your stay at Syke Villa, Troutbeck didn't disappoint. Troutbeck is a very special village but we are biased. with best wishes Jim & Jan Property Owner

  • "Location location location really is all that is needed to be said!"

If you want a relaxing location with excellent walks from the door then this is the one for you. I only needed to use the car to nip to booths to stock up; had I been more organised you could probably get a shop done on the way up and not use the car again! The post office & tea room also supply some things such as the critical milk etc etc. We're booking again for next year. Get your boots on and get walking up and over via Wansfell OR Ill Bell... but take plenty of fluids for the later! Many thanks Jim and Jan.

  • "Clean & comfortable with lovely views from the upstairs lounge."

Very steep descent from car park to cottage, not really suitable for people with mobility problems. The conservatory is really a lean-to entrance porch (even a notice from owner says "please leave your muddy shoes in the PORCH".) The entrance door difficult to open as it binds on the stone floor & the lock is temperamental. Very limited food preparation space, almost nowhere to store any provisions such as packets & cans, only a wobbly vegetable rack. Bathroom is very spacious yet there is nowhere to put your toiletries.

Thank you for your comments. We are glad to hear that you found the property to be clean and comfy, and that you enjoyed the views! We take all comments on board. Thank you. The Lakelovers Owner Relations Team Property Owner

The property is spotless, the owners go above and beyond to provide everything to make the stay as comfortable as possible. The cottage itself is in an idyllic location with fabulous country views. The villa is extremely well appointed, decorated beautifully and tastefully and us so peaceful - I didn’t want to leave. Our daughter and family spent a week in this cottage in May 2022 and recommended it quite rightly. We thoroughly recommend a stay here.

  • "Exceptionally nice place with a lot of thought about what guests might like, BUT with an emphasis on pretty over practical."

    1) Very little work-surface and storage space in the kitchen; could you replace the "butcher's block" with something larger and sturdier? And possibly put up some shelves (instead of pictures)? Because the cupboards were so well-stocked with items, there was little space to put away our own stuff and then do food preparation. 2) You provide lots of games/ jigsaws (as well as a very generous selection of DVDs) but the only place to do them is the dining-table. Perhaps supply a folding card table for use anywhere, or MDF board to lift from the table when we want to eat? 3) There were so many toiletries on offer in the bathroom, as well as knick-knacks, that we had to put some of them on the floor to have room for our sponge-bags. Again, could there be an empty shelf? 4) A purely personal comment: there was a really thoughtful and full selection of "what to do round here" flyers and books, but half of such novels as there were (and there could be a few more trashy ones from charity shops, we must have been really lucky with the weather if you expect guests to read the Forsyte Saga) were hidden in drawers. Again, a small bookshelf for ease of navigation, rather than telling your guests to go through every drawer and cupboard when they arrive? (Good children's selection in their bedroom cupboard). Publish this or not, as you will. If potential guests are reading this, it's a very nice place, but until you hear to the contrary, do bring your own books if you like reading, a board if you like doing jigsaw puzzles, an oilcloth for the dining-table if you want to prepare a lot of food, and sponge-bags that can hang on a hook. Nice outside areas, BTW, good views, safe parking area, good jumping-off-point.

Thank you very much for your comments and for taking the time to let us know your thoughts. The owner will be able to see your suggestions and can make amendments as required. As I am sure you understand, every guest has their own requirements and therefore what suits one person may not suit the other. We are glad that you enjoyed the property and the views that it has to offer. Lakelovers Owner Relations Property Owner

This would give a much better selection of TV programmes in the evenings and will also allow guests to work on a laptop if necessary. I had to go to Booths to achieve this, which was an inconvenience. Great cottage though. This was our 6th visit and will be back next year.

The owners had made improvements not noted in the listing which was great. The short walk to Mortal Man pub made that an ideal eating out venue. We found that pre-booking is essential for most pubs, restaurants and activities that you might choose to do in the day such as ferries or boat trips, Go Ape, some National Trust places.

About the location

TROUTBECK

Windermere 3 miles; Ambleside 4 miles.

The small Lakeland village of Troutbeck can be found between its more famous neighbours Windermere and Ambleside, close by the Kirkstone Pass. A mixture of houses, cottages and farms, the village is scattered along a narrow lane bordered by a drystone wall. Many of these buildings date back to the 17th Century with features such as mullioned windows and heavy cylindrical chimneys and the northern end boasts its own 17th century inn. Close by, the bustling towns of Windermere and Ambleside are popular with visitors, providing a range of amenities to suit all tastes. Lake Windermere offers boat trips, including the lakeside ferry to the Lakeside Aquarium and Grizedale Forest Park. The ‘Windermere Steamboat Museum’ displays a fascinating collection of boats whilst children will enjoy the ‘World of Beatrix Potter’ in Bowness, where technology brings her characters to life. Within easy reach of destinations such as Coniston Water, Kendal, Keswick and the Lakeland Mountains, Troutbeck is ideally situated for exploring all that the region has to offer.
