"Incredibly clean and well maintained apartment with outstanding views in a perfect location for exploring the lakes"
-
"We loved the property."
A perfect base/location. Great view of the lake from our window and the patio.
-
"Our 3rd stay in this cottage solely because we holiday with other members of the family who also stay at Wood Close and we have a dog."
Issues with the property do not get resolved from year to year. Sash cords broken in the twin rooms, making it next to impossible to open the windows. A shower screen seal that was broken in 2023 is still not repaired, resulting in the bathroom floor getting soaked each time you shower. Some parts of the property have not been properly cleaned for a long time. Definitely not a place to stay if you don't like spiders or cobwebs. It is a shame that for a high weekly rental fee the owners do not seem to want to invest in even the most basic of running repairs.
-
"The property was beautiful just couldn't fault it, and the views were amazing and the garden lovely, everything was spotlessly clean."
. Walks from the door didn't need to use the car at all.. 5 star

"Very beautiful cottage"
We are so pleased you enjoyed staying at White Moss. Property Owner

"An ideal location for a Family Wedding / holiday thereafter."
The Wedding was at the Daffodil Hotel so the location of White Moss was just perfect. We then spent a week holidaying as a family. For the wife and I we were just able to chill and not venture out too much and for the 20 somethings the local walks were ideal. We would definitely consider returning in the future. This accommodation rates 10/10. The Wright / Whelan Household
We are so pleased you enjoyed your stay and found the location ideal for your group. You’d be welcome back at any time. Property Owner

"Very poor hot water supply and pressure"

"Great accomodation - very spacious, comfortable and perfect location"
-
"It was well-equipped, clean and well-maintained."
We had some difficulty getting the key safe to work. The property exceeded expectations. We had a lovely stay and would recommend to anyone.
-
"Lovely property and grounds, short walk into Grasmere, fantastic central location for the Lakes, amazing views and walks from the property."

"Second time here."
Price up a lot since last year. Still a lovely spot and well equipped
-
"Lovely stay in lovely accommodation photographs do not do property justice."
Spectacular view of Grassmere lake from lounge window. Very well equipped and thought out. Great location, short walk to Grassmere village and access to walking routes.
-
"What to say!"
This was the perfect property in the perfect place. Comfortable, clean, well equipped and beautifully furnished. Made by the view, terrace and glorious grounds with red squirrels and birds. And to top it all only a stroll into Grasmere or onto the fells.
-
"Great location, fabulous views and so spacious and clean, photos don't do it justice!"
We were a little disappointed with the bathroom particularly the shower as its fitted over the sloping side of the bath so hard to stand under and the pressure is very weak. The sofa is also very flat and probably needs replacing. Overall though we loved it
-
"Fantastic property and location."
Loved waking up in the morning to such an amazing view. The double bedroom at the front was fabulous. Beautiful walks on the doorstep. Great for exploring. We did a combination of eating out and cooking in depending on the weather (which was largely very kind to us). The kitchen facilities were very good. The only downside to the property was the water pressure for the shower, but we suspected this may be a tricky one to resolve. It still didn't spoil our stay! Thank you for a wonderful holiday. We were missing White Moss and Grasmere from the second we left. Looking forward to coming back soon.
-
"We enjoyed the property, however there was noise from above that woke us."
That was caused by creaking flooring which could easily be fixed. Other than that we liked the position and accommodation. We are thinking about re booking for same time next year but 30% increase has caused me to look around.
-
"Property was great."
Good location never had to use car. Great walks. Lots of birds in the garden. Also saw red squirrels.Apartment was large and very warm and cosy. Will definitely use this place again because we love Grasmere.

"We have just enjoyed a return visit to White Moss some 35 years since the last visit!"
We found the apartment to be extremely clean, tidy and comfortable with very good facilities. Except for one important thing for visitors in cool / cold weather: This week has been very wet and cool (outside!), so we stayed in for quite a lot of the time. The problem is that the heating is just about adequate for a couple of hours in the morning and during the evening. BUT during the day it goes off, and the apartment gets pretty cold pretty quickly. There are instructions for swithcing on the heating "outside of programmed times" - followed these, but nothing happenned. I now think that as the heating is "programmed" to be off during the day, you can't override this. I should add there is an electric fire in the lounge, which we had on a lot! But everywhere else was uncomfortably cool - around 15 degrees during the day! My advice - take a couple of extra fan heaters with you and you will fine.

"We had a great week’s holiday - the location of the property was excellent, being near to Grasmere and lots of good walks, with a beautiful view over the lake from the terrace."
It was also well equipped and spacious. There were just 2 things we weren’t so happy with - firstly, 2 of the single beds had one or two slats which broke/came out easily, making them less comfortable - this was in previous reviews but still hasn’t been dealt with. Secondly, there was no recycling collection available at the property, and when we took ours to Ambleside as suggested, it was refused as we were from a holiday cottage. In 2021 this is disappointing and I hope can be made available soon. Apart from these matters, we would certainly recommend this property.
-
"The cooker is slow."
The bed in the smallest room had a missing slat - we took one from the foot of the bed and re-located it in the middle. The gardens are very good - the gardens above the house are a delight for sitting and reading. The house has a good locatiopn - away from crowds and noise, yet close to Grasmere. Overall it have us a good holiday.

"We had a lovely week's holiday at White Moss in July 2021."
The apartment is lovely, very large and well equipped and gorgeous location with views over Grasmere. The only down side to the apartment is that it only has 1 bathroom, so with 5 of us we needed to queue sometimes! Also the beds in the smaller rooms have very soft mattresses - although the master bedroom is very comfy and spacious. It is very well-located, in walking distance of both Grasmere and Rydal Water and a short drive to Ambleside. There are also plenty of walks from the house itself. The apartment is located up a steep hill off the Keswick-Ambleside road - be sure to follow the instructions sent rather than relying on the postcode in a sat nav which takes you somewhere else! All in all a great place to stay.
-
"Really enjoyed our stay at White Moss cottage."
However just a few niggles: .Beds are not very comfortable /too soft.one slat in the single room kept popping out didn't feel safe to sleep in) . Blinds in kitchen difficult to reach too far back from edge of work units.( one blind was temperamental from day one & couldn't raise at all after day 3. .Living Room lounge chairs very uncomfortable struggled to watch a film sitting in them. But really love this cottage & surrounding area.
-
"The view is what makes this property."
Inside, some of the furniture was dated and the owners has stripped out all the ornaments and soft furnishings because of Covid making the apartment seem very colourless and barren. The shower was poor and it took time to achieve a steady flow of water at a comfortable temperature. The patio area is lovely but a lot of the time the benches were taken over by holidaymakers from other apartments in the house which meant you had people sitting outside your rooms all afternoon, talking. We have re-booked one more time and with take a view then. Great view, but.
-
"A fantastic cottage in a superb location overlooking the lake."
Accommodation is immaculate and they cater for all needs. Only a short walk to centre of Grasmere village and on the walkers path to Rydal & Ambleside. Superb break - would definitely return to this cottage - thank you.
-
"We all had a fantastic time."
The place was in the perfect location with so many walks on our doorstep meaning we didn't have to drive if we didn't want to. The dogs loved it. We look forward to booking again soon.
-
"One of the beds in the twin room was broken upon arrival- this caused us some inconvenience and disappointment."
-
"Really enjoyed our weekend at White Moss."
The accommodation was very clean, warm & cosy. Fantastic views over Grasmere water & only 10-15 minutes walk downhill into Grasmere. The Alcock tarn walk was directly behind. I would definitely book this again, it was perfect for five of us & our dog.
-
"This was a fabulous apartment really big and airy with fabulous views of the lake, we took our two little dogs and the walks around were great right from your door."
We loved our week even though the weather was not great we will definitely come back to this apartment.
-
"Our holiday cottage suited us brilliantly as a family with 2 very young children."
Having a large dining and kitchen area where my 3 year old could play safely while we cooked was great. The master bedroom was large enough for us not to feel cramped sharing it with our newborn baby. Finally, the view of Grasmere lake from the living room window was spectacular.
-
"We had slight misgivings when we arrived in the dark, having taken a side-turning recommended by the SatNav before we got to Grasmere."
However, up we climbed, eventually finding White Moss. First impressions were that it felt very remote - not filling us with confidence given we wanted to eat out and use Grasmere as our base! BUT.... As it turns out, White Moss is only a 10 minute (downhill) walk from Grasmere centre - though a slightly longer uphill trek back :) This has the major advantage of White Moss being quiet, tranquil and blessed with the best views from any self-catering apartment we've booked. White Moss is the basement apartment in what was obviously at one time a huge and very beautifully appointed traditional slate walled house overlooking Grasmere and the fells beyond. Huge sash windows make some of the rooms full of light, with incredible views over the terrace. The bedrooms vary considerably in space - the twin relatively small (though fine), with one of the doubles absolutely enormous. The high ceilings give the place a real sense of space, which is good. The kitchen is very well appointed for self-catering, and the open plan dining room (part of the same large room) is great for a meal with friends or family. The decor is fine, if a bit tired in places (the bathroom could do with some modernisation for example, though is very adequate), but it's clean and certainly not something to put off visitors unless you want a perfect boutique hotel-type experience. For a good sized group of walkers wanting a comfortable, quiet and well-positioned retreat, it's perfect. Other amenities include wi-fi and a well-stocked cupboard full of board games - as well as the normal TV and DVD player (which we didn't use!) Our only two very small negatives were that we didn't have any hot water (from the taps) for washing up or hand-washing (the shower was electric thank goodness) and one of the twin beds had popped a slat (which I fixed). Otherwise, we were all very happy with White Moss and would happily book again.
-
"We really enjoyed the big rooms, the family/living room was specially confortable to spend family time in the afternoons."
Kitchen was fully equipped for any cooking you may want to do. Hot water stream was a little weak and internet connectivity outside of the living room was also not so strong, this where really minimal inconveniences.
-
"Beautiful property."
Much bigger than we expected and extremely clean and comfortable. Very homely. The views from the property were gorgeous. Little touches were very much appreciated such as the milk in the fridge on arrival and tea and coffee. Very welcome not to have to make a trip to the shop so we could have tea after a long journey . Beds were very comfortable. No complaints. Had a great week and would recommend you to friends and family.
-
"Fantastic location, easily accessible walking trails, comfortable beds and well appointed kitchen."
-
"The only two things which were a bit of a problem were that the drain was blocked outside and noise coming through ceiling and party walls."
Otherwise we made an excellent choice!
-
"The apartment was exceptional with all its high quality fittings and furniture."
It was very clean and had everything we could want. However and its a big however. The noise from the other apartments disturbed us every night. One night the couple up above had an argument late at night. The apartment upstairs sounded as thought they were moving furniture round late into the night. It sounded as thought they were showering late at night this meant we were disturbed by the water running through pipes in our bedroom? The apartment next door had a loud dog that seemed to bark uncontrollably. We accept that the noises we heard were just the people moving round and not from unacceptable noises however we were disturbed every night and this tainted our holiday..
-
"Had a lovely time at White Moss."
The views from the cottage were amazing. It was very comfortable and had everything we wanted. The ONLY thing we would change was that there was no direct access to the outside space other than walking around the cottage but it didn’t spoil our stay. The gardens are beautiful and our dog enjoyed exploring them! Would definitely return.
-
"Really well-presented and well-equipped apartment, very comfortable and just right for four people with a dog!"
The location was beautiful with views over Grasmere, and it was great to be able to walk up into the hills or down into the village, without needing to rely on the car! Will visit again!
-
"The flat was clean and the beds were comfortable."
I think the pictures of the outside area are very misleading. The approach to the White Moss door is very scruffy and quite dirty and there is no easy access to the terrace at the front - no useable outdoor space to enjoy the georgeous view. You can climb out of the sitting room window but obviously that was not satisfactory. Noisy neighbours started at 6:30 am, the insulation is poor. Even at this time of year the storage radiators were barely adequate. We arrived back from a hard day on the fells cold and wet and didn’t really warm up until we went to a warm pub! Some strange omissions - only one toilet roll for 5 people!! and no hand soap in the bathroom. There is nothing drastically wrong but in general as we have spent many weeks and week end in the lakes it was disappointing and not good value for money compared with any other place we have hired. Adequate but not much attention to detail.
-
"This place is amazing, outstanding views and everything you need in a holiday home."
Easy walk to Grassmere and bus route! ( with a hill included) set in beautiful grounds with visiting deer. The apartment exceeded our expectations, absoloutly stunning very high class with everything you need and more!
-
"What a wonderful week we just had at White Moss."
The setting just above Grasmere with views across the lake was perfect. The weather was amazing so lots of walking and swimming in Grasmere and Rydal Water. The property was lovely and had everything we needed. We are already planning our next trip.

.far exceeded our expectations. Fully equipped with everything you could want. Grounds are beautiful. Definitely worth a visit
-
"We loved it - excellent location and very comfortable."
Two minor points - we needed champagne glasses and also loo roll!
-
"The apartment and surrounding area was beautiful and the views were stunning."
The apartment is well equipped with everything a family and their dog needed. Didn't want to leave as it felt very homely. Great place to stay.
-
"The cottage was excellent, clean, spacious and warm."
The location was good, just 15 minute walk to Grasmere village. It was all on the one level which was perfect for our group of mixed ages. I will certainly be booking again

About the location
GRASMERE
Ambleside 5 miles; Windermere 9 miles; Keswick 13 miles.
Situated in the heart of the Lake District National Park is the lovely village of Grasmere, probably best known as the home of William Wordsworth, a place he once described as "The most loveliest spot that man hath found". Any visit to Grasmere needs to include The Grasmere Gingerbread shop, where the Wilson family has been making gingerbread for over 60 years. Also in the village are a number of shops, pubs, a church which dates back to the 13th century, and Grasmere Lake. Grasmere Sports takes place every August, where you can watch participants compete in a variety of sports, including Cumberland wrestling. Just five miles away is the town of Ambleside and Lake Winderemere where you will find shops, pubs, restaurants and the 17th century Bridge House, which is one of the most photographed buildings in the Lake District. Cruises, boat trips and watersports can all be enjoyed on Lake Windermere, and the towns of Windermere and Keswick are also within driving distance. Grasmere is a wonderful base for your Lake District retreat.
