  • "Cosey and comfortable cottage with spectacular views in one of the best villages in the Lakes."

The balcony is a great asset as is the small but useful outside space and gate to the public footpath at the rear. Beds were very comfortable with good quality bedding too. Easy walking distance to two good pubs in the village also the cafe in the old post office. We were lucky with mild temperatures during our stay but the electric heaters were barely adequate apart from the one in the bathroom. The wood burner would help boost the heat in the evenings but not appropriate to use on chilly mornings whilst having breakfast. Based on several recent reviews we contacted Sykes prior to our holiday to get assurances that the damp issue had been addressed. We received confirmation that the owner was aware and measures in place to address. We didn’t detect any damp issues thankfully but as a previous review stated a missing section of downpipe at the rear of a neighbours property could be hindering any ongoing damp resolution. The owners may also wish to consider a washer/dryer which would reduce wet clothes drying and adding to damp challenges. The parking space directly outside the cottage is purely for loading/unloading as you partly obstruct a neighbour’s garage but a dedicated parking space is only a 30 second walk.

  • "Penny's cottage is in a beautiful situation, the views are fantastic."

Upstairs is lovely, and well maintained. The upstairs bedroom smells a little of damp. Downstairs is another issue! The shower room has a fantastic shower, however steam soon builds up in the small bathroom as the extractor fan is doing very little and is dirty. Opening the door just sets the fire alarm off. Maybe install another or more powerful extractor or clean the existing one. The towel rail is coming away from the wall, as others have said and needs repairing. The downstairs bedroom smells of damp, especially when it is raining. It feels cold and damp all the time. Nobody has cleaned around the side of the bedside tables for a long time, and there are cobwebs and spiders. I tried using the vacuum cleaner supplied but it smelt awful. There is no need to have two beds but together to form a king size bed as the room is too small, in our opinion. Having said that we did enjoy our stay, if the cottage had some TLC we would return again. Communication with Sykes has been terrible. There is no phone number. Nobody took any action using WhatsApp until I threatened to share my thoughts on X. Then they suddenly replied. Listen to what people are saying about communication with Sykes. It is all the same, non existent and you do not try to help customers before or during their stays. You seem to just want the money without providing any service. Use phones again so customers can talk to someone!!!

Thank you for taking the time to give us some feedback. We apologise for the issues that you encountered during your stay, the owner is now aware of the issue with the smell downstairs and is currently in the process of getting this rectified. In regards to the fan in the bathroom, this has now been replaced by a more powerful one, the towel rail has also been repaired since your feedback. We find that bed size/comfort is very much down to personal preference so we are sorry that it was not to your liking on this occasion. We are sorry that you found it difficult to get through to us, we will have a look into this further and see where the issue was. We hope t welcome you again. • "Whilst the view is stunning and the location fabulous the cottage has been difficult to enjoy due to the damp and mould issues downstairs."

There is no denying the gorgeous view and lovely location, but we left two days early because of the damp problem. The smell of damp was quite noticeable on arrival. When we went to go to bed on the first night it became apparent there was black mould on the wall in the downstairs bedroom, the carpet next to it and the curtains smell very badly of damp and the carpet feels damp when you tread on it barefoot. Also we had to hoover behind the bedside tables in there (at midnight!) due to them literally being stuck to the wall with cobwebs and spiders in situ. We tried sleeping upstairs on the second night but that bedroom also smells ‘fousty’ and we spent two nights sleeping on the settee in the living room before deciding we’d had enough. It wasn’t helped when the cooker fuse tripped out four times when we were just trying to heat a meal for 20 minutes. The cottage could be amazing, it must have been lovely before the damp issue got this bad. The owners have put in a dehumidifier but that won’t deal with damp in the walls (I’d suggest a conversation with the neighbour about the missing down pipe right by the wall that is getting the damp issue). We’re not the first people to mention this problem when we checked previous feedback on Sykes website. We tried to contact Sykes twice while there but no reply was received so we left. We were sad to leave early, and did try to enjoy the cottage for the view but gave up.

Thank you for taking the time to leave feedback. We are sorry to hear that you vacated the property early, and that you struggled to get hold of us. Your comments will be passed onto the relevant teams. Thank you The Lakelovers Owner Relations Team Property Owner

We had some concerns reading other reviews about damp/cleanliness - but no such issues on our stay - immaculate and no sign of damp. Cottage is tiny but perfectly formed - everything you need for a lovely stay - better suited to couples than families/freinds although there are two double bedrooms. Space is limited but that makes it even cosier ! I'm 6' 5" and headroom downstairs is limited but most people will not have an issue. My only gripe (because I'm tall) is the positioning of the smoke alarm in the downstairs bedroom - hit my head several times in the night !!! The location and views from the rear are stunning and an added bonus is it's a 10min stroll along the lanes to the rear of the property to either the Mortal Man (superb food) or the Queens Head (beautiful and good food) - both dog friendly. Would highly recommend this cottage - what a gem !

  • "Lovely situated cottage in a beautiful rural, quiet location."

Lots to like; the stunning view, the balcony, shower/water pressure, woodburner, utility room when coming back from wet walks, fully equipped cottage. However; The counter pane of the main bed downstairs slipped onto the floor and when picked up it was covered in black dog hairs which then stuck to the quilt/bedding, leading us to believe the carpet had not been vacuumed. We also suffered from bites overnight in the bed (fleas?). The downstairs bedroom smelt damp and felt cold, we understand it is set into the hillside and a humidifier was provided to counteract this but still not an inviting space. This bedroom contains a huge bed of 2 singles strapped together, and in our opinion was too big for the room leaving very little space to get round, a smaller bed we think would have worked better. Ridiculously, 1 1/2 toilet rolls left for potentially 4 adults for 1 week. Lots of cobwebs evident especially on the natural stonewalls. We brought our own firewood but a starter pack would have been appreciated.

Great walks from the door and two lovely pubs, The Queens Head and The Mortal Man within easy walking distance. However, we were disappointed with a few things. No logs or kindling on arrival ( as commented on before ) so we left what we had left for the next guests. Mouldy towel. Dirty blankets. Cobwebs abundant, Dirty Floors. The gardens need tidying. This cottage was not for us. Unusual for Lakelovers.

Thank you for leaving feedback. Pennys Cottage is indeed in a lovely location. Ourselves and the owner try to ensure that the cottage and garden are maintained to a high standard and we will investigate why you did not find this to be the case. Cleanliness was generally very good although the sofa blankets where full of dog hairs which my wife discovered after putting one around her and getting covered in them. There was also inadequate fire wood for the log burner and I had to go and purchase some myself. A property with a burner at this time of year should have a well stocked supply of wood and kindling for guests. The cottage was lovely and had a very welcoming and cosy feel. Unfortunately when we arrived there was no water however this was not the fault of anyone to do with the property and united utilities has it back on by the time we got back from the pub. We were very pleased with the response of the agency and the owners when we informed them of the problem and they did all they could to help.

Dog fur everywhere when we arrived (which we can appreciate is hard to clean, as we have our own!) and cobwebs/strings of dust in the corners of rooms, which was a little disappointing. The downstairs also smelled quite badly of damp which I see the owners are trying to remedy with a humidifier but it wasn't a pleasant place to sleep in. We thought the cottage was perfect for us as a couple with our dog. The cottage was clean and has an efficient use of space. Streaming was no problem and we had 4G service alongside functional Wi-Fi. We would have appreciated a few emergency amenities for power outages, such as a torch and maybe a few LED/battery operated candles, since the power was out for 10 hours due to storm Pia. Thankfully we had brought our own fire supplies as none were provided. The old post office Cafe was a lovely place to have breakfast and coffee, while the mortal man is a super cozy traditional pub with amazing food. There are great walks to do right out the door. All in all we had a wonderful stay and would love to return!

Very comfortable beds and a great shower. The boot/laundry room is a brilliant touch for outdoor kit and dog owners. There is a woodburner but the owners do not provide any wood and there's no suggestion of where to get wood from locally. It would have been great to be given the option to buy wood. The nights were very chilly in the living room with only a couple of electric radiators. And of course a fire in the woodburner would have completed the experience. There is a problem with a damp (smell) in the lower ground floor, which is really to be expected from a stone cottage in the Lakes and I appreciate it's hard to overcome, and there is a dehumidifier that comes on every day to counter this. Additional kitchen cupboard space would have been useful for dry food storage. The superficial cleanliness of the cottage was okay. However, I doubt it has been thoroughly cleaned for some time. Externally, the front and rear gardens are overgrown. Our pleasure in seeing the cottage for real on arrival was spoilt because of the weeds and accumulated organic detritus. The rear garden is so overgrown that we had to stoop quite low to get out of the back gate. The balcony is a lovely feature, allowing us to enjoy the splendid openness and beauty of the location. However, the condition of the wooden balustrade is poor and unsightly. The weather has taken its toll on the paintwork. The steps down to the rear garden are overgrown. Had the cottage not been so expensive to hire for four nights, I would have been less critical. For what we paid, I expected a much better overall standard. Criticisms aside, because of the excellent standard of internal refurbishment, the cottage still warrants four stars.

  • "The cottage itself was wonderful, but the hygiene let it down."

Mattress and pillow covers when linen was stripped smelt of previous occupants and had small bloodstains. Mouldy smell from dehumidifier. Hob still greasy. Cannot be comfortable if not clean. Chocolate box pretty, well located for good walks and local pubs otherwise. Hygiene is however an issue, disappointimg that despite past balanced commentary regarding cleanliness on tripadvisor from previous occupants no action has evidently been taken.

Great pub within walking distance but nicely away from the busyness of Ambleside and Bowness while only being 10 minutes drive away. Would happily book again.

  • "The location of the cottage is absolutely beautiful - stunning in fact."

We had several issues with cleanliness - there was a toothpaste lid, left by previous guests, in the bathroom and also there were several items that had fallen down the back of the chest of drawers in the downstairs bedroom, again, from previous guests, which made us wonder what level the cottage had been cleaned to. There was also rubbish in the drawers in the bedroom and the floor/skirtings were very dusty. Downstairs had a very damp feeling to it, although there was a dehumidifier.

However, the cleanliness let it down. On arrival the floors were dusty so I attempted to vacuum myself but the Miele Hoover provided had no suction so had to resort to sweeping where I could. Also skirtings and several areas dusty and required polishing.

We had a lovely comfortable stay at Penny’s Cottage. The location itself is ideal and perfect for walks, hiking or traveling further afield. The property provides facilities to cater for all needs and weather conditions. We found the large utility area space perfect for the dogs and very handy. The garden is pretty and the balcony provided amazing views where you could sit and take in the grandeur of the mountains and scenery. We will definitely be returning. Excellent value, wonderful stay.

We stayed 8 months ago and the cottage was spotless then. Cleanliness very disappointing this time.

  • "We have just spent 4 wonderful days at Penny’s Cottage and wanted to touch base with you to say how much we enjoyed it."

We are regular visitors to the Lakes having visited the area together for over 20 years; we know Troutbeck very well as both somewhere to stay, walk and eat! Throughout our Lakeland travels we have stayed in various cottages throughout the region and can say without fear of contradiction that, whilst the cottage itself is one of the nicest we have ever stayed at, the view is without parallel and certainly worth the rental fee alone. We were particularly impressed by the sheer attention to detail throughout the cottage which went a long way to ensure we enjoyed a relaxing stay. This also applies to canine visitors and our two Westies, Barney & Daisy were very appreciative of the facilities extended to them

  • "My husband and I recently stayed at your lovely cottage in Troutbeck."

It was such a nice change to stay somewhere so thoughtfully decorated and with nice artwork! Painting is a hobby of mine and whilst sitting at the kitchen table in Penny’s cottage with log fire burning, I spent a few pleasant hours painting the view. I thought you might like to see the results. Thank you for a lovely stay and we are looking forward to our next stay in June.

About the location

TROUTBECK

Windermere 3 miles; Ambleside 4 miles.

The small Lakeland village of Troutbeck can be found between its more famous neighbours Windermere and Ambleside, close by the Kirkstone Pass. A mixture of houses, cottages and farms, the village is scattered along a narrow lane bordered by a drystone wall. Many of these buildings date back to the 17th Century with features such as mullioned windows and heavy cylindrical chimneys and the northern end boasts its own 17th century inn. Close by, the bustling towns of Windermere and Ambleside are popular with visitors, providing a range of amenities to suit all tastes. Lake Windermere offers boat trips, including the lakeside ferry to the Lakeside Aquarium and Grizedale Forest Park. The ‘Windermere Steamboat Museum’ displays a fascinating collection of boats whilst children will enjoy the ‘World of Beatrix Potter’ in Bowness, where technology brings her characters to life. Within easy reach of destinations such as Coniston Water, Kendal, Keswick and the Lakeland Mountains, Troutbeck is ideally situated for exploring all that the region has to offer.
