  • "To be greeted with piled rubbish outside the door set the tone."

The oven was the filthiest oven I have encountered and the hob was unclean. The freezer was unusable as totally iced up. The fridge seals are broken and mouldy. Some pots and pans were so bad they needed binned. The kitchen window is cracked from top to bottom. The garden furniture was rusted through leaving exposed dangerous sharp edges. The garden was not as shown in the photos as building work was taking place next door and all the tall shrubs were gone. The garden chairs were removed by maintenance so we didn't have anything to sit on outside. Apart from 7 broken lightbulbs, a faulty lamp, sharp worktop edge, loose fittings it's a nice cottage in a beautiful location. Parking is extremely difficult. Maintenance came quickly after a call and replaced the bulbs, measured for new glass. The cleaner returned and brought 2 new baking sheets but ignored the filthy oven. Some of these issues are old as other reviewers have brought them to the attention of the owner. Why haven't they been addressed.l? Sykes have apparently contacted the owner about our concerns but haven't had a response????

  • "Overall a comfortable stay for 3 nights in Yanway cottage, lovely property in a great location."

Just a few disappointing discoveries throughout our stay. On arrival the lounge, landing, rug and mat was showing obvious dog urine patches. We did try to call a number in the information book but there was no answer. Kitchen freezer was completely iced over and was unable to use as drawers wouldn't open. The TV was unwatchable as constantly buffering on every channel.

  • "Their are two problems with this property."

First, and most important, there are problems with water heating and no adequate information on how to deal with it. Thus while we had a shower on the first morning, we then got no hot water for three more mornings. In our view, the advice should be to use the booster for sixty minutes last thing at night to guarantee sufficient hot water in the mornings. All guests should have this explained! Second, the entry/exit of the car, particularly the exit which must be done in reverse, are quite difficult as mentioned in the details of the property. It's best to have a small car for this and not a medium-sized car as we had.

Thank you for taking the time to leave your comments. We are sorry to hear that you experienced issues during your stay at Yanway Cottage. We were pleased that our Property Services Team were able to attend and help. We take all of your feedback on board. Thank you The Lakelovers Owner Relations Team. Property Owner

  • "A few things ruined our holiday."

The bedding and cushions all had feathers in them. My son has asthma so the feathers made him very ill the first night. We ended up buying new duvet and pillows. Unable to watch tv as the connection kept switching off. No where to put bins out ( no bins) would not be able to stay again and friends would be the same with the bedding.

Dear Linda Thank you for your valuable feedback. Your comments regarding the TV reception is news to us and we will ask maintenance to check this. It is a smart TV connected to the internet but a new aerial was fitted only a few months ago to improve the connection in this rural area. It is the first time we've heard that our bedding and furnishings could aggravate asthma and we will ask Lakelovers to flag this on their website in future. As regards the refuse bin it should appear as pictured in the front courtyard in the profile on this website. The refuse collection is run by a private waste company on a weekly contract and we only replaced the last bin a few months ago after it was permanently "borrowed" by a neighbouring property. We will investigate and resolve as soon as possible. Update: We have now ordered replacement duvets and pillows in order to address any future issues with allergies. In other good news, the wheelie bin has been returned by whoever borrowed it and is in its usual place by the back door. Kind regards, the Owners of Yanway Cottage Property Owner

  • "A lovely stay with only minor requests ~ This is our first time staying at Yanway having stayed in many other cottages within the Troutbeck area."

Only this time we had both our 9month old daughter and, as always, our dog with us. Please do not be put off by the driveway, we were able to fit our Ford Puma on the drive easily, yes, we did need to reverse back up the drive to get out or perform a few point turn to turn around but the driveway space itself was perfectly fine. The side entrance to the property is fantastic for popping muddy paws and dirty stroller wheels in without coming through the property itself. The garden area is directly opposite and our dog could take himself over there and back of an evening. No bother. Also, you can both access the bed on both sides. The space is deceiving online but we had no trouble. We were able to set up a travel cot in the second room which worked well. Overall, a more than comfortable stay and we would revisit again. My only request would be that there is a stair gate available on the top of the stairs. Where we have stayed before we had a roller stair gate and these were handy for our little crawler. For those bringing small children, we brought along our own highchair as there was not one provided. Also, fresh milk, tea, coffee would be appreciated on arrival but this would not deter us from coming back. Very cosy! Thank you.

Thank you for taking the time to leave your feedback. We are glad to see that you all had an enjoyable stay at Yanway! We take all feedback on board, and we hope to welcome you again. Thank you- The Lakelovers Owner Relations Team Property Owner

  • "Lovely, comfy cottage, in an ideal location."

Description was varied according to which website u viewed. Nothing said about just 1 dog and not allowed upstairs on the site we booked through. There were some teabags and coffee available on our arrival, so a pint of milk would have been a lovely addition! The outside light didn’t work, this would have been useful when taking the dog out at night. Would recommend and stay again.

Thank you for your feedback. We are sorry that the descriptions are varying and will review this. We are glad that you enjoyed your stay and look forward to welcoming you back again. Lakelovers Owner Team Property Owner

  • "Lovely cottage, stayed here ten years ago, and this time all was just as satisfactory, nice, warm, clean, and equipped very well, however, none of the windows opened, they’ve been painted over, which is fine during the winter, (I opened the back door in the kitchen when cooking, but had to put the kitchen bin in front to keep the dog in), but I would think in the warm weather it’s not nice, as you can’t get any fresh air in the house."

Also, as I read in one write up a window was broken, it still is, it has blue sticky film over it…. The whole window!! However, all said and done, we would stay again.

  • "A lovely cottage in a fantastic location and would return if just a couples get away."

A few critiques. Listing is a bit misleading, the garden is detached from the property and the master bedroom is only a double. The water heater is inadequate for the property. With just two of us having quick showers we were running out of hot water. I dread to think how a fully occupied house would cope!

Thank you for your feedback. The listing is correct at stating that the rooms consist of one king-size bed and one double bed. We are sorry to read that you had some problems with the hot water. Unfortunately, as we weren't aware of these, we were not able to resolve them to make your stay more enjoyable. We are glad that you enjoyed the cottage and all the area has to offer. • "Not perfect Lovely cottage in a scenic spot with great dog walks on the doorstep."

Great location for getting into Windermere, Bowness, Ambleside etc There were a number of frustrations with our stay, however: The garden doesn’t adjoin the cottage so rather than being able to simply open a door to let dog out we had to put his lead on and take him across the roadway to access the garden - not ideal in middle of night or poor weather - this detail is not clear in the cottage specifications. The door knobs on both access doors can be tricky to turn - we spent way too much time frustrating trying to twist them open. The kitchen pack is inadequate, barely enough washing up liquid for 2 bowlfuls of water and only a few dishwasher tablets. We ended up buying a bottle of washing up liquid. There was only 1 toilet roll! I didn’t expect there to be a week’s supply but thought there’d be more than one roll. Again we had to buy more. No hand soap in bathroom or kitchen - we had to buy 2 bars of soap. Main room is described as king size - the bed is not king size, just a standard double. Misleading. There was only one log for wood burner and a meagre amount of kindling. Specification said fuel would be provided. Again, I wasn’t expecting a week’s supply, but in previous rentals you get a couple of night’s worth of logs? One log!! Frustrating and disappointing. Wood burner has no companion set, so no poker or tongs to assist with fire stoking. Shed key is missing. I was so incredulous re there only being one log I wanted to check the shed in case there were more there - folder in house says shed key in top kitchen drawer - it is not and could not be located. Main bedroom would benefit from curtains, the horizontal blind not adequate to block out the glare from the neighbour’s security light which repeatedly came on and off. To summarise we had a lovely week in the Lakes, cottage is very attractive, but is missing some simple touches which would have elevated our stay to something more special. There is nothing in the way of greeting or hospitality so if you do choose to stay here bring your own loo roll, soap, salt and pepper (both cruets were empty), washing up liquid, logs and kindling. Reading previous reviews, the vast majority of the frustrations I have outlined have already been documented by previous guests so I have no confidence they’ll be taken on board.

Thank you for your feedback. We are pleased to hear that you found the location to your liking and enjoyed the walks from the cottage. We will take a look at the listing to ensure that it is up to date, regarding the points raised. As the property is self catering, the pack left is intended as a starter pack. • "The cottage and location is great."

I have only a few minor nick picks to raise. I found that the round door knob handles used to enter the cottage were very hard to operate, I would say i'm fairly strong but have dry hands. Also the window in one of the bedrooms had been broken and a temporary repair had been made. I believe the reason for this is that the windows were binding where they had been overpainted. Also we found two pair of green tights under one of the beds clearly missed when cleaning. It was unclear which wheelie bin belonged to the cottage which could have been rectified by writing the name of the cottage on the bin. Finally the parking in the designated spot was tight but just possible for an Audi A6 estate however one of the residents close by explained that the parking area on the main road was for public parking and not tied to the cottages on that aspect, this was good to know.

  • "Yanway Cottage was very quiet, with 2 pubs, post office and shop within walking distance."

It was in an excellent location for walking the fells from the door. The parking space is very tight, only really suitable for a small car which was not mentioned until after booking (Lucky our car is small). The heating didn't seem to work, so it's good having the woodburning stove, although only 2 logs and a few sticks provided. The water was supposed to be on timer, again it never seemed hot when you needed it. There is also some need of remedial works, windows which don't close, broken pane of glass. The property would be exceptional if not for these few niggles. As the location is excellent.

  • "Really lovely stay and we loved Yanway Cottage."

Definitely would return. We had an issue re lack of light bulbs but this got addressed very quickly. Very impressed. My only criticism is lack of cupboard space for food. We ended up with our supplies on the kitchen table, to be fair, it didn’t bother us, but it would have been nice to have been able to put them away. Also lack of hot water, it said it was on a timer but not sure it was. However, we put the immersion on when needed so again not a big issue. But might bother some. Overall we LOVED it and are planning on when we can return. Thank you so much x

  • "Directions to get to the cottage were rubbish and after a 9 and half hour drive to get there, the last thing I wanted to do is drive around in circles."

Parking situation is completely inaccurate, unless you have a two seater city car then you won't fit on the so called driveway (court yard) even then there is a pinch point between neighbouring house and garden wall. The TV signal weak and TV would go blank and state TV signal is weak, we reported this heart of the lakes as it caused much upset for our little one. I think this could be resolved if foliage when removed from the electric cables. Bathroom: the sealant has gone on the bathtub, again reported as I don't want this to become an issue for the owner with leaking ceilings. The ceiling is pealing away like there is wall paper on it, this is not helped by the fact there is no fan, there is also no water pressure for shower. Windows were painted shut, this is a big bug bare for me incase of a fire risk. Storage heaters I've never used before, when we arrived it was a little chilly and no hot water, even though the setting was on timed. We turned on the storage heaters hopefully to take the chill off and spent the next 4 days dying of heat (and not being able to open the windows made it really uncomfortable during the night). Key missing for the shed, which stores the seating cushions for the garden, however even if it had cushions the chairs where unsafe to use as they were rusted through, reported to heart of the lakes. No direction as to where the wood for the fireplace is, I found it on the last day and put a log in the fire and filled up the basket for the next person. The doors are sticking on ceiling causing damage to the property, and the carpet. No curtains in bedrooms just blinds, which made it too light in the mornings. No views unless you go outside, you are overlooked by neighbours both front and back. People renting next door spent one evening just walking around their garden looking in at us constantly. Very well equipped kitchen however not a single cupboard space for food. The shelf falling off the wall in the kitchen, which has the toaster on. Ok now the good bits. Good for location to Windermere and bowness, Ambleside even Keswick easy to get to. Leave the property and there are amazing views. Very quiet location Very well equipped kitchen Beds were quite comfortable.

  • "Lovely property, clean, tidy and excellent location."

The mortal man pub is very handy. The cottage is advertised as dog friendly - as we arrived late on the Saturday it wasn’t until the Sunday night that we read in the welcome pack dogs are not allowed on the sofa or the bed. This would have been helpful to know in the original booking details as I cannot un train a dog immediately, and also found out too late. If I had known this, we probably would not have booked.

thank you for your valuable feedback Sophie-Maria. I am pleased that you enjoyed your stay at our cottage and I will ask the agent to look at their booking confirmations so that people are aware of the pet policy as recorded in the welcome pack Property Owner
