"Beautiful cottage in a lovely location."
It was cold when we got there and took some time to warm up , luckily we had taken logs etc for the fire . The main bedroom radiator didn’t work and there was an electric heater for us to use which to be honest wasn’t that warm . The shower was also very slow and warm not hot - The hot tub was perfect only issue there was it was so dark to get to it , the solar lights were not that powerful and the walk from the house to the hot tub was down some stairs which were not lit by the lights so tricky to get down - The cottage was much warmer the following day and it was lovely having the Christmas tree up - I can imagine in warmer months the garden with the river view is beautiful

"We had a wonderful holiday, in a wonderful cottage in a beautiful area of the country."
We have already booked again for 2025 which says everything really.
-
"Such a lovely place and lovely host only one thing we would change would be a little fence at the bottom of the garden while we stayed the river got rather high and we was very cautious about letting our well behaved dogs out just incase."
Other then that we loved it.
-
"Lovely Spacious cottage in a wonderful location, perfect for anyone wanting a peaceful stay and love exploring the North Pennies."
The garden is perfect for the summer evenings and we loved the hot tub overlooking the river, however the garden isn't suitable for small children as there is a 9ft drop down to the river. The local peacock came to visit on the patio, every evening between 9-10pm for his daily handful of nuts. The only negative is the bedroom. It is quite big but only has a small double bed, however we had a wonderful stay :)
-
"Joanne and Steven are lovely people nothing was to much to a new bath mat and microwave."
Cottage is bigger than you think big enough for 4 people . Garden and hot tub great. The peacock that came every night at 9 o clock was the icing on the cake. The Golden Lion in St John’s Chapel approx 3 miles away had lovely food and the landlady was very helpful. The quiz night on Sunday at the Blue Bell same village was great fun. Lovely stay shame about the weather. Will be going back next year.

"A beautiful cottage with wonderful features, relaxing and calming atmosphere."
The perfect break. Every detail and need has been thought of. We had a perfect stay!

No welcome pack , only 2 tea bags and the scrapings in sugar bowl ,after 4hour journey nothing to make a drink with or a biscuit in sight, lets face it a pint of milk and a packet of biscutes costs around two pound and makes all the difference the parking is non existent, too narrow and car parked at top most of time so no entry

"Lovely little cottage more spacious then photos show really clean everything we ..."
Lovely little cottage more spacious then photos show really clean everything we needed within very peaceful and quiet the garden is beautiful leading down to the river hot tub was an added bonus few hours spent just watching the wildlife lots of walks from the door step if that’s what your after St Johns chapel nice little village with few amenities and Stanhope village with more shops is also worth a visit overall was a very pleasant stay and would definitely recommend
-
"A lovely cottage with everything you could need."
In a great location with plenty of places to visit nearby like Barnard Castle and Eggleston Nurseries - would definitely return- the hosts were very accommodating and were on hand should you need anything (although we didn’t) Had a couple of lovely meals out at The Forresters in Middleton in Teesdale and the Three Horseshoes in Barnard and not forgetting the fish and chip shop in the Market Place - best ive had in a long time
-
"Beautiful property, the photos do not do it justice."
Far larger than expected to, very homely. Fantastic hot tub looking out to the river, doesn't get better than that! Lovely village with great walks on your doorstep. 100% recommended.
-
"We were really amazed by this cottage."
the pictures just do not do it justice. Absolutely spacious, the kitchen has everything you need, and the oven was one of the best ovens I have used in a holiday cottage, which was important, since we cooked our Christmas dinner. The bed was one of the most comfortable ones, the bathroom was sparkling and the bathtub is just huge. Joanne came to greet us and to show us the hottub, she was a delight. There was a present for us and a card plus 2 presents for our dog, very thoughtful. Plus there was beautiful Christmas decorations, which we appreciated. Definetly a place I will book again. Thank you for having us xx

"Bilberry cottage was everything we were looking for in a quiet weekend away and we'd definitely recommend it."
The area is beautiful and the pub is a couple of houses down the road.
-
"Lovely cosy cottage, perfect for a relaxed retreat for half term."
Hot tub was amazing!
-
"Just back from a 4 night break at Bilberry Nook Cottage."
The location is perfect. At the side of the weir and onto the river. The weather was cold but dry which allowed us to sit outside and just listen to the water and the birds. Great to relax and recharge your batteries. The peacocks don't seem to be bothered by humans so be prepared for visitors when you are sat outside! Plus squirrels, ducks, the cat - we didn't get to see the kingfisher. The hot tub is a huge plus and was well used. Lovely and warm and kept in great condition and checked every day.. The cottage is well equipped, warm, comfortable and a home from home. We slept extremely well in the double bed and after searching for a new mattress for quite some time we will be ordering one of these. Jo and Stephen are great hosts, friendly, helpful and nothing is too much trouble. They are onsite and on hand for any queries and questions but other than that you don't see them. Lots of walks from the doorstep if you want them. The pub is just down the road. Currently only open Friday and Saturday evening and Sunday afternoon. Everyone you meet in the village is friendly. We had a lovely time and really do hope to come back soon.
-
"Lovely property with great hosts."
The cottage is absolutely gorgeous and was very comfortable. The hot tub was a delight as were rhe friendly Peacocks who visited each afternoon. Couldn't recommend it highly enough. Thank you for letting us stay and I hope we can come back
-
"What a gem of a find!"
Pictures are great, but don’t do it justice! Joanne is a lovely host with lots of local knowledge. We will definitely be back
-
"Beautifully presented cottage."
Spectacular views over the river. Hot tub was an added bonus. Lots of wildlife visiting the garden including peacocks . Kitchen well equipped - dressing gown available. For use after the hot tub. Comfy bed and cottage , clean and homely . Jo and Steven very approachable and friendly - but respected our privacy also. Would highly recommend- lovely holiday in an unspoilt part of the world . 10/10 from us .

"Great place to stay"
-
"The cottage surpassed our expectations."
The quality was top notch with everything - furnishings, bathroom, kitchen etc., and of course the secluded jacuzzi was the icing on the cake - instantly hot and ready and mostly covered from the occasional shower :)
-
"This was our second visit to Bilberry Nook Cottage."
It is a beautiful cottage with everything you could need. We would prefer a king size bed to the double they have but this is only a small niggle. The other small issue is that unless you have a small car you will need to park a short walk from the cottage. It felt like the new owners of number 8 made it difficult for us to park and unload and load the car up on the change over days. Jo the owner is so helpful and will do anything to make your stay perfect. This place is an absolute gem it is amazing, quiet and beautiful.
-
"We had a lovely restfully holiday loved the cottage and where it was"
-
"A fantastic property in an idyllic lication."
Joanne and Steve were lovely and very helpful. Looking forward to another visit to Bilberry Nook at some point.
-
"Lovely cottage, we really enjoyed the week spent here and we would love to return in the future."
The hot tub was fabulous and the wildlife and setting was idyllic. The check in process smooth and owners were very friendly and accommodating. The cottage was well equipped, there wasn't anything we needed during the week that wasn't there. Thanks for a lovely stay.
-
"We had an absolutely lovely stay with our two dogs, beautiful area and really food for a reset."
-
"The owner was lovely more than helpful with anything we needed even lent us a dog cage for the week ."
Lovely cottage n hot tub was fantastic lovely walks near by Shane the local pub was closed!
-
"The stay was very good we both enjoyed and our dogs loved playing in the snow would recommend Linda and Graham"
-
"Cottage looked even better in real life."
We enjoyed our stay. Feeding the peacocks was a lovely touch. More lighting around the hot tub would be useful. It was difficult to see at night, especially when the steps were slippy with ice. I would have expected a sponge and teatowel in the kitchen, or to have been told to bring one, as this made cleaning whilst cooking difficult. Overall, very good value for money.
-
"Property is lovely and the views are even better than expected."
The hot tub was a wonderful touch (although risky to use in the dark/snow!). We visited during unseasonably cold weather and unfortunately had problems with the boiler, but appreciate that friendly owners tried their best to help with temperature levels. Would return in warmer months :)
-
"Amazing place, amazing location, host informed us of all necessities at the beginning of our stay and local info which was grateful."
Bed is small but that is my issue. Would 100% come back here. Cheers.
-
"Gem of a find, beautiful countryside and lovely cottage right on the river."
-
"Fantastic weekend at Bilberry Nook."
The surroundings were idyllic, and the cottage was perfect for a cosy getaway. See you again soon!
-
"Amazing cottage, spotlessly clean , warm & cozy, loved the whole place from start to finish had an amazing week away in this beautiful tastefully decorated home from home, beautiful garden and the hot tub was perfect."
We will definitely be back
Hi Michele, Thank you so much for the lovely feedback and leaving the cottage nice and tidy. It was a pleasure to have you stay. We hope to see you again in the future and the sweet courgies of course! Warm wishes Joanne and Steven Property Owner

"This property is not as described."
It’s filthy. We work in the emergency services and we were looking forward to a relaxing chilled break. We arrived at the “cottage” and upon opening the door we were knocked back by a fusty awful Smell. The kitchen is very dated and in need of upgrade and a good clean- there is no where to post pics but it was awful. The hob mucky the oven - disgusting
We are sorry and perplexed you felt our cottage did not meet your expectations. On meeting your partner just after arrival, I asked if everything was ok he said it was, I then showed the hot tub settings, I also explained the nearest pubs shops and takeaways. I let you know we are next door, and you have both of our contact numbers. You had every opportunity to let me know any issues. Unfortunately, we can't help with anything if we are not made aware of it. Our guests' comfort is our priority, and we are always happy to sort any problems if required." Property Owner
-
"Excellent hosts, there to greet us on arrival and share some nice walks to go on."
Cleanest and best equipped cottage we've stayed in, lovely area. The parking wasn't an issue like I thought, barely a minute walk to where the car could stay. So peaceful in the back garden. Highly recommend this cottage.
-
"Lovely cottage, great facilities and an idillic setting."
What else could you ask for? Well how about visits from the local Peacocks? Awesome - definately coming back. Thanks for a pleasant stay.
-
"Excellent property and great location, will be coming back again in the near future."
-
"This was a lovely property in great surroundings with the river at the bottom of the garden."
Everything was spotless and clean and thank you Jo for the little welcome pack! Was a nice touch. Everything you could think of was in the cottage so home from home but in beautiful surroundings. Thank you
-
"Lovely cottage in stunning surroundings, Cosy and warm spacious cottage Lovely walks locally or short drives away followed by a relaxing dip in the hottub."
Every evening a visit from the local peacocks and obundance of other birds. Never really used kitchen as ate out most of the time but seemed fairly equipped. Crosskeys pub in Eastgate needs a mention in your book as the food was really good and friendly owners. Main bed a little uncomfy but that's personnel preference. Parking was fun and once unloaded it's easier to leave car 20-30m out on the road. Overall enjoyed our stay and would recommend and also stay again.
-
"Came away with the girls and my lil poochy and we thoroughly enjoy it the cottage it's self was amazing and room the hot tub was amazing only down side for me was having to keep the dog tied up as I was scared she would run into the river."
Maybe if there was a connection on the wall so you could let them have a lead extension on. Also the nearest shop was a 30 minutes walk which wasn't to bad as it was a nice day especially with the dog but if you don't drive I wouldn't like to walk that in the bad weather. Would definitely stay here again thank you for the experience xx
-
"The location by the river is outstanding, and sitting in the garden or hot tub was very enjoyable."
The river walk along to St Johns Chapel was lovely also. I appreciate the cottage is not the most expensive, however the beds and pillows are very uncomfortable, and the extremely poor hot water pressure makes for pitiful showers. Which is a shame, because the cottage would otherwise be good value. The listing should make it clearer that parking at the property is highly unlikely, unless you have a very small car (I know it does mention it, but the photos make it seem like parking is available.... but only if you have a mini sized vehicle and can manoeuvre round other cars in the way). The owners say in their handbook if a car is blocking your exit just to knock on the door and it will be moved - not so when we came to leave. In a phone call to one of the owners we were told "well I always manage to get past". The oven was not working properly - seems like just a top over element works. And when they say bring your own firewood, they really mean it - there's not even enough to light a single fire... Whilst I wouldn't stay again, that is down to the comfort value, not the location or price.
-
"Amazing cottage loved our stay."
Great views overlooking the river and so tranquil and relaxing sipping a glass if wine whilst listening to the river. Amazing wildlife on show too we saw squirrels, rabbits, birds ans even had a visit from some peacocks every night. Cottage was clean and had all facilities needed including a relaxing hot tub. Steven and joanne were also on hand if we needed anything. Only thing I would suggest is getting some carpets or mats for the stairs as our dog struggled with them but this is just a very minor suggestion as otherwise what a fantastic place
-
"Lovely relaxing holiday in lovely location with added bonus of a hot tub."
Super, spacious dog friendly cottage.
-
"This was an excellent cottage, warm, cosy with fantastic views all around."
It made a great base to go exploring and walking, but because we had rain/Gale/snow whilst we were there it also made a great place to snuggle down and read a book in. We were especially entertained by the visiting peacock looking for a daily snack, and the wildlife in the garden, as well as the fantastic hot tub and sat to day life on the river. This is a great all year round cottage. The only downside is that the Wifi was very poor and only in the kitchen, although the host really tried to improve this, and at least got it in the kitchen for us.
-
"Absolutely gorgeous cottage."
We had such a lovely weekend. The owners were beyond helpful and friendly. Genuinely couldn’t recommend this place enough.
Hi Amy, thank you for your lovely feedback. It was a pleasure to meet you and we are so pleased you enjoyed yourselves! Thanks for leaving the cottage nice and tidy and hope to see you back at Bilberry Nook sometime! Property Owner

"Bilberry nook is a beautiful cottage, set in idyllic surroundings."
The cottage itself was well equiped and perfectly situated for our annual new year get away. There is just one pub in Westgate, it doesn't welcome dogs and does not open until 5pm which was disappointing, however it was shut for the duration of our stay anyway, due to Covid, unforeseeable and we got over it. The nearest shop is the Coop, a few miles away by car but it is well stocked with all uou may need. During our stay we were never able to connect to the advertised wifi, no big beal but an annoyance. The downstairs cloakroom had no hot water, the shower in the main bathroom was merely a trickle and the oven took an eternity to cook anything. Having said all of that, none of those issues would prevent us returning, the one biggest factor that would, is the unsecured back garden with the extremely deep flowing riiver running through it, The garden is an amazing haven for wildlife but sadly we couldnt enjoy it for fear that the dogs would end up in the river or disappear along the run of gardens, which one did, and get out onto the road. Really think this should be made clear in the advertisement to avoid future disappointment. Also there is no lighting, so when using the hot tub after dark, you need to be very careful as the multilevel garden is difficult to navigate. Overall if you have no children or dogs this would be a fabulous little cottage, once the owners have tweaked the above.
Thank you for your feedback Claire, we are so pleased you had a nice stay despite some minor issues. It is unfortunate the village pub does not accept dogs and I'm afraid out of our control, however there are 2 very dog friendly pubs just 25 minutes river walk up in St John's Chapel which is mentioned in our welcome book. The wifi booster router we noticed had been moved to a different room which might explain why you couldn’t connect. However, we have upgraded to a powerline extender which seems to be a much stronger connection. The cloakroom hot water tap had been fixed and we were unaware that this was broken again however we seen the note in our maintenance book and will get it looked at. The shower seems to be average for an electric shower we have tested it, however we are looking at a new boiler to be fitted shortly so are hoping this improves any water pressure issues. Bilberry Nook Cottage’s biggest feature is the beautiful unobstructed river views. We have decided not to block these up with fencing so we can watch all the wildlife of the river. Fencing is up either side of the garden preventing dogs getting into next door. Most dogs would not attempt the sizable drop into the river. We do advise the river edge is unfenced in our property description and rely on prospective guests to use their own judgement on what is appropriate for their own family and pets. We have exterior lighting on the cottage and have a portable lantern and solar flood lighting for the hot tub area at night. We have found the solar flood light not reliable enough with the winter months so we have purchased a battery powered one that we will fit to improve this. In the future we will look at hard wired options when we come to re-wire the property. Again, thank you for your feedback and we hope to see you again in the future. If we can help with anything during your stay with us please tell us as soon as you come across any issues and we will always endeavour to put these right if we can. We wish you all the best for a positive 2022. Warm Wishes Joanne and Steven Property Owner

"We had an excellent holiday at Bilberry Nook Cottage."
The cottage is spacious and welcoming with comfy beds and lovely furnishings. The owner is helpful and friendly and sorted out an issue with the hot tub very quickly. The garden is amazing, so peaceful and relaxing with lots of wild life to observe. There isn`t anything I could fault about this cottage.
-
"Wow..."
. this cottage has it all! Comfort, cleanliness, space and most of all peace and quiet. The garden is a sanctuary away from everyday life with the river running along the bottom of the garden to the visiting birds of all varieties. To put the cherry on the cake a hot tub to relax in after a days walking. The owner was on hand if you needed anything and was always happy to have a chat with you. Nothing was to much trouble for them.
-
"Sitting outside listening to the water flowing and watching the ducklings, birds visiting etc and of course the peacocks."
The nearness of enjoyable dog walks. The helpfulness of the owners. It was an excellent holiday, we have recommended it to friends who were accessing the site for suitable dates

"What an absolute treasure of a holiday."
Bilberry Nook was beyond what I expected, beautiful surroundings, very homely cottage. High quality furnishings. The hot tub was brilliant, as well as the gardens. My pooch loved her little holiday.. Beds very comfy, bathrooms and kitchen have everything you need. Add in the peacocks daily visits and it was perfect.. I will definitely be booking again. Thank you

"The cottage is warm, cosy, clean and comfortable."
Is in a great location with the river running right along the back of the property and the hot tub is an added bonus. Plenty of places to visit, less than an hour from Newcastle, Durham and Darlington if you want big towns and cities. If you prefer the smaller villages with loads of character and friendly people there are loads nearby. This is also a geat place to stay if you are into walking and fishing. The cottage is so relaxing when your inside, you have the option of a proper wood burning fire for the cold evenings and should you wish to listen to the river running by open any small window you get this. The other side is that once all windows and doors are closed you cant hear a thing from outside its blissfully quiet. The owners are really friendly and although the cottage is directly behind the owners they do not intrude on your privacy in any way.
-
"This is a beautiful cottage in a lovely small village only a few doors from a pub that serves the best Sunday carvery."
-
"Had A lovely little weekend break at this cottage , loved the hot tub , would love to be back"
-
"Super friendly owners, although they were nearby, were not intrusive."
Hot tub was the cleanest I have used yet. Accommodation well presented, extremely comfortable and immaculate. Great walks on the door step for our 2 labs who had a great holiday. Had squirrels, peahens, and field mice on the patio area as well as birds. Was so relaxing and I’d love to return right now!
-

"We had a brilliant weekend weather was terrible but it didn't stop us enjoying the hot tub and lovely walks with the dog and children."
The cottage was beautiful and clean and had everything you need. The only downfall we wish we would have stayed longer
-
"Comfortable house with with a lovely riverside location."
It was bliss sitting on the hot tub, watching and listening to the sights and sounds of the river. The house had everything we needed and was nice and cosy. Would definitely recommend.
-
"Absolutely fabulous time at Billberry cottage, spotlessly clean, home away from home with stunning relaxing views."
Friendly and helpful owners who obviously take great pride in their cottage and surroundings. Spent three fabulous nights with my family and two dogs. If any negative no secure area for children and dogs as garden leads straight onto river but won’t stop us returning, just something to be aware of if children and dogs visiting. Thanks for a great relaxing weekend.
-
"Lovely peaceful and tranquil cottage."
Abundance of garden wildlife, hot tub amazing and kept so clean by friendly owners Steven and Joanne. Some beautiful waterfall walks close by. Comfortable and clean cottage, owners live next door however they

"This cottage was a fantastic place to stay."
The garden is fantastic and we enjoyed overlooking the river and watching the birds, squirrels and rabbits!
-
"Lovely location."
Gorgeous comfy cottage with all amenities you need. Hot tub bonus would recommend a canapy building above it. Parking very difficult due to small area hardly any manoeuvre space to get in due to property on either side. Would definitely return. Owners very friendly & helpful.
-
"Such a lovely quiet cottage with the river running behind which you can fish from and the lovely hot tub was amazing."
You can see so much wildlife from the property. We had a lovely relaxing time away. We will be back.
-
"We stayed at end of August with our 2 teenagers and 2 dogs."
Fabulous remote cottage in a stunning location. The owners were very friendly, the milk, chocolate cake and dog treats were greatly appreciated. It was a really relaxing stay. Loved watching the birds in the garden and on the river. Some really beautiful walks from the village, including the waterfall walk up to the old lead mines. The nearby High and Low Force are also worth a visit. Corbrigde and Hadrians Wall are only a lovely drive over the moors. All at the local pub were very friendly. Will be returning and have recommended to friends.
-
"Cottage looked good in picture."
But when we got their we found a lot of faults. Left our own nice home to go to a house in need of a lot of tlc. House had cobwebs all round windows and doors. Parking for two very small cars was right need to take it slow when driving car in. Very last picture on your site for cottage does not relate to the property.
-
"Lovely place and lovely people."
Stunning river at the end of the garden and walks in every direction from the front door. Very quiet and secluded. I intend to book again.
-

With excellent facilities and very comfortable. The pub at the end of the road is very welcoming and serves lovely food but you do need a car as there is very little to do but we had a great time and WOOD RECOMMEND to anyone wanting a nice quiet and relaxing holiday. thanks to Joanne and Stephen.
