  • "What a wonderful week we had at Geltsdale Gardens."

The perfect setting for peace, quiet & tranquility, which was just what one of us needed following a very difficult time. The ground floor setting, throughout, is ideal for anyone with mobility difficulties; even the front door & path are step free! Parking is right next to path too, which is also all level. Very well equipped apartment indeed; want for nothing. Beds are extremely comfortable; luxurious linen, towels & hand soaps/lotions. We had a small query, which the very accommodating owner was more than happy to instantly help us with - thank you. Geltsdale Gardens is a great place to relax & unwind or a base to explore the Lakes & over the border into Scotland. Highly recommend & certainly won’t hesitate to return. Thank you for a lovely stay.

  • "We had a lovely restful week at the Geltside Garden Apartment."

The setting is beautiful and the apartment lived up to expectations. We had everything we needed including comfortable beds and a lovely view! As bird lovers we were pleased to watch the resident sparrowhawk patrol her territory, and we even picked up a kingfisher on our birdsong app (sadly didn’t see it). Having planned to drive, we ended up taking the train at short notice and were pleasantly surprised by how much we were still able to do. The station is 10 minutes walk and the service was remarkably efficient. Supermarket and takeaway deliveries were easy to arrange which helped! A very pleasant week altogether, I would certainly recommend the area and the apartment.

  • "Geltsdale Garden Apartment was a truly wonderful place to stay."

The apartment was spectacular with stunning views across the northern Pennines. Everything we could need was provided for to make our stay as comfortable and relaxing as ever. It is a great 'base' to explore near and far as well as being on the edge of Wetheral - a quintessentially English village with a wonderful little shop/post office and coffee shop. We can't wait to visit again - our week at Geltsdale flew by all too quickly.

Thanks for your lovely feedback Nicky, we hope we can welcome you back again in the future. Property Owner

Thanks to our host David, for being extremely helpful and attentive, and for making sure we had everything we needed. The apartment is beautifully decorated, homely, and well equipped. These factors made our stay here easy, fuss free and like a home away from home - thank you! We can’t wait to come back…hopefully later in 2023.

  • "This is a superb property, clean, warm and luxuriously comfortable."

How anyone could think it needs a 'refurb' is quite beyond me! It is quiet and secluded, but near enough to the village of Wetherall to enjoy its facilities, including easy access to Carlisle and Newcastle via the railway station. It is only ten minutes from Tesco and Toby Carvery on the A69. Beautiful looking house, with a rather undistinguished history. Two slight niggles: there is ONE car space for the apartment, not two as stated on the website; I managed to park next to the wall, so it was not a major issue. Secondly, one picture shows table and chairs next to the pond, the implication is that you have access to that. You don't! It is not clear how 'out of sight' of the main house you have to be (how do you access the walks?) so I kept out of the way! Apart from these minor points, you will not be disappointed in this beautiful apartment. If there are people in the upstairs apartment next door, you will know about it, by the way. Not a problem for me, since they were out a lot of the time, but it could be a problem. Would I return? No, I never visit the same holiday location twice, as a general rule.

Thank you for your lovely comments Vincent regarding your recent stay at Geltsdale Garden Cottage and we are pleased to read you enjoyed your stay and gave a fantastic review score. We are sorry you felt there were 2 niggles, had you discussed these with us we could have advised the following: There is ample parking, the cottage is marketed as parking space for 2 cars, the second car can be parked beside the beech hedge, we would have been happy to show you where had you asked. The pond is marked as private due to the health and safety risk to children, again we would have been happy for you to use this area had you mentioned this to us. We are also sorry you don't return to the same property twice as we would have loved to welcome you back, but maybe you will stay in one of our other cottages next time. The decor was superb and felt like a real home instead of a rental accommodation. The location was very peaceful and the village had several amazing historic attractions. We felt very much at home here with all that we needed and would love to return again some day.

Only one parking space for garden apartment not two A general refurb would make it really good Location lovely Easy to get around

Thank you for your feedback but we are a little confused by your comments as you had 2 cars which you parked at the cottage. We did call round a few times during your stay but you did not mention anything wrong or that you felt the cottage needed a refurb, this is subjective as we have received many positive comments on the cottage. We hope you enjoyed your stay and we can welcome you back again in the future. David and Julia Property Owner

  • "Several complaints & reminders lodged with Sykes Cottages since to 13."

06.21 ignored & still unresolved one month later. Apartment was very unclean especially kitchen. Massive cobwebs everywhere.Living room furniture needs replacing. Cracked bedroom windowpane. Loose wire on lamp. Previous occupants' possessions left in bedside drawers & under couch. Confrontational owner with no regard for social distancing. Would never stop here again or book with Sykes.

Thank you for your feedback. The owner has confirmed that he checked the apartment on the Friday before you arrived, after the cleaner had finished and everything was clean and well presented. The owner did call to introduce himself to you, and you confirmed the apartment was fine at that time. During your stay you bumped into the owner on a walk and mentioned that you felt the garden furniture was dirty and the high ceiling lights were dusty, these were both immediately attended to and no other issues with the apartment were raised with the owner either by phone or calling to see them next door. The owner wants all guests to have a lovely time and if they have any issues during their stay, they are only next door and will happily rectify any problems as they did with the issues you advised them of. The owners have replied to your complaints raised at the end of your holiday by letter and they also called round to discuss these with you where they said you had become confrontational and you had admitted your complaints had been exaggerated to us. At Sykes Cottages we do everything possible to ensure you have an enjoyable stay, but occasionally things go wrong. If a problem occurs you should, in the first instance, contact the owner/caretaker who is responsible for the management and maintenance of the property Property Owner

Just a couple of gripes. The directions to the actual apartment could have been clearer (never located the bowling green we were told to look for) but the bigger issue was the wi-fi signal which was intermittent at best throughout our stay. Apart from that, all was good.

  • "Beautiful apartment in a very impressive building."

Amazing views. Apartment was comfortable, clean and had everything we needed. Very well situated for trips out, Wetheral has its own train station too! Two minor negatives for me; no welcome pack - I know they are simply a gesture but I’ve never stayed anywhere (and I’ve stayed in a number of cottages) where you don’t at least get a pint of milk to make a drink on arrival. It’s the little touches like that make you feel welcome. Also remember this is a downstairs apartment, and consequently if you have kids staying in the apartment upstairs it will be quite noisy as you can hear them running around. Neither of these things spoiled our holiday though, and I would recommend.

The accommodation was a perfect base for exploring the area or just having a rainy day inside looking out at the view. We met the owner, who was friendly and happy to help, yet kept his distance. I can't think of anything negative to say about the visit.

HD TV would be nice. Radio didn’t work. Great parking and garden. The village is fantastic, great choice of pubs/restaurants within walking distance. Hosts were very nice and helpful on arrival however could not contact them after that. I wanted to give them the heads up that a problem with the roof was developing. Overall we liked it and would return.

  • "A queit, understated little gem."

In the right position for the EdenValley, Hadrian’s Wall, Lanercost and everything Northumbrian. Lovely views and plenty of ground to stroll around. Owners very welcoming and promises of help, which we never needed as the apartment was so well provided for. We also had a spectacular thunder storm, with flashes of lightning every few seconds. Fortunately, it was not over the Eden Valley, but in the distance and so wonderful because of that. An excellent holiday “cottage”.

  • "The Garden Apartment was in an idyllic spot peaceful and with easy access to lots of places to visit etc."

There was plenty room both inside and out which was great as the weather for our stay was very favourable. There was everything in the apartment that you could need. We didn't need to go far to enjoy Cumbria to it's full potential. The only thing that I think might add to the experience would be as we have previously received in our other Sykes properties and others is a small welcome pack e.g. fresh milk, bottle of wine? Otherwise another successful Sykes holiday. Many thanks.
