"Really enjoyed our."
Stay at Howgill Cottage which is very clean and well maintained. Found many useful extras which we were not expecting, e.g washer / dryer and cafetieres, tea bags & coffee sachets. Kitchen very well equipped, though some paper kitchen towels would have been useful.

"Perfect for what we needed, location is excellent."
Lovely clean cottage with excellent facilities however a few personal touches would improve, eg shower bathmat, toaster. Lack of washing up liquid and only half a toilet roll for two people for 3 nights is the only issue I have. That may seem petty but I would expect more from a holiday let. Overall a pleasant break in a lovely location.
Thank you for your feedback. I am sorry that the washing up liquid bottle had not been refilled prior to your arrival, it is usually kept topped up and the same applies to toilet rolls ( the cleaning company is now aware). In addition we have now added a shower bathmat as per your recommendation. The Aga does have a toasting rack hanging from the rack above which is used for making toast rather than having a separate toaster. We are really pleased you had a lovely stay and enjoyed the beautiful surroundings.

"We enjoyed our stay in the cottage which was conveniently located."
The stay could have been enhanced by a few improvements. Outside area was scruffy and could do with some attention. Cutlery was rather a jumble of types. Could not find a corkscrew or bottle opener.
Thank you for your feedback. Apologies for the outside area being a little more messy due to work being carried out at that time. I am sorry you were unable to find the corkscrew / bottle opener which is usually located in either of the drawers next to the AGA. We do our best to notice when cutlery and crockery needs replacing. Tank you very much for your feedback which has been very helpful.

"Lack of basic kitchen equipment such as a simple toaster and somewhat lacking in crockery."
A full length mirror would be advantageous for ladies.
Thank you for your feedback, we have checked the crockery and cutlery situation ad refreshed accordingly, thank you for bringing this to our attention. With regards to the toaster a toasting rack is hanging above the AGA and is used to make toast rather than using a toaster. (Simply warm the rack then pop slices of bread between it and heat on the Aga top plate). We will check to see if it is possible to fit a full length mirror somewhere appropriate. Many thanks we do appreciate your feedback.

"Lovely cottage perfect for 2."
Very nicely finished lovely bathroom with walk In shower nice bath too. bed a bit big for room but it was comfy slept well. Wardrobes space enough and lounge a nice size. We didn't use the kitchen except for kettle but looked like plenty of equipment. We ate out at Duo for breakfast, the best full English and fresh scones! and the pubs for dinner very friendly people.
Garden description is misleading there is no lawn to this property it's the cottages in front of this one. Very small patio area. Never used as too wet. But no good if you want a private garden. Didn't worry us but description needs to be altered. Parking on the road can be tricky as not much space and this was early July. Pay and display a little walk away. As it says in description walk way to cottage is uneven. And getting luggage into cottage.
We loved our stay and would book again village is beautiful and could live there!!
Thank you for your review which will be helpful for our future guests. We look forward to welcoming you again to Sedbergh and indeed to Howgill Cottage.

"The property was pleasant and nicely situated, but it was very pokey and had virtually no storage room in the kitchen for food items which had to be left on the table."
The bedroom was almost completely taken with the bed with minimal space around it to get by. There was no space to accommodate bags or cases upstairs without taking up clothing storage areas so we had to keep our clothes in their cases.
The kitchen cooker was an Aga which is a specialist device and not suitable for holiday premises.
Worst of all though was the boiler which only produced a bowlful of hot water at any one time. We contacted the owner about the problem and it was suggested that we try to reset the boiler which made no difference. The owner then contacted a plumber to affect a repair, but he was on holiday and did not get round until Thursday afternoon. As we were due to vacate the cottage on Friday morning, we had virtually no opportunity to take a hot shower for the majority of our stay.
I feel that the lack of such a basic amenity warrants some recompense and hope that you are able to reimburse some of the money that we paid to rent this property.
Thank you for your comments and I understand Sykes have been in contact regarding compensation due to the boiler problem which has now been fixed.
Our cosy, one bedroom cottage is as described in the listing and does include an Aga in the kitchen which many of our guests enjoy (especially Aga toast).
In the living room there is a woodburning stove, 2 seater sofa and armchair plus floor cushions if you prefer.
The bedroom includes a double bed, cupboard to hang clothes and two bedside cabinets plus storage space under the bed for a medium sized suitcase or holdall.
The bathroom is large by cottage standards and includes a bath and seperate walk in shower and built in cupboard with hanging space for clothes.
Personally, I love returning to my little cottage in Sedbergh which i currently offer as a holiday cottage to enable others to enjoy Cumbria and the Yorkshire Dales.

"The details of the property are erroneous."
Internally we have only comments that the bedroom is not king size—not enough floor space for 2 holdalls. More advice on the Smart TV would have been helpful. We failed to get BBC 1 !! A separate radio would have been appreciated. Externally we list the facts which ruined our stay There is no lawn as advertised : the main photograph has been taken from the neighbours garden and the low wire boundary fence is no more than 5 feet from front of cottage. Hence the description of patio is in our view not correct .. Additionally on this good weather period the neighbours garden was used continually. A tent was 7 feet from the lounge window and a semi permanent swing covered lounger was 2 feet from the small patio? table. Lively teenagers played swing ball up to the boundary of their lawn and the view from the window was directly onto both the tent and the rotary clothes dryer There was no view as advertised. We have a number of photographs to endorse the above and would be pleased to forward.
Thank you for your feedback and our comments about accuracy of description which I have addressed with Sykes Cottages.
Howgill cottage is a small, traditional, whitewashed Cumbrian Cottage dating back to the 1860's, it is set well back from the main road, located down a ginnel (alley way) along with several other cottages and lovely neighbours. Within walking distance to the town centre and walks up onto the Howgills and down to the river and into beautiful Dent Dale. It is well suited to walkers and cyclists who enjoy the quiet, unspoilt countryside and small market town away from the crowds.
Internally the cottage is cosy with a sofa, armchair and a log burning stove in the living room, an AGA in the kitchen/diner, and the bathroom has both a bath and a separate walk in shower. The double bedroom has a new and comfortable bed and mattress, side tables with drawers and a cupboard with hangers for clothes (an additional cupboard with hangers is in the bathroom). Outside is a small patio area with table and 2 chairs.

"Great location and lovely place with fab walks in the howgills nearby (our reason for staying)."
Overall the cottage was cosy, comfortable and we loved the bathroom. A few small details that would improve the cottage - there were two hairdryers but only one tea towel provided. The Aga was an adventure but not a big issue, however there is no alternative to it (toaster or microwave), bedroom is not a king size as advertised but this wasn’t an issue for us. Water pressure in the area is low and one evening we returned to find there was no running water in the cottage at all, on phoning the number provided with the check in email there was no answer and no response to my message left but thankfully the water supply returned after a few hours (a local supply issue we assume).

"The house and location was lovely and we had an enjoyable stay."
The property was well laid on and had all we needed for our stay.
We were however disappointed that the bed /room was only a double when the property is advertised as having a king size room. My wife and I are both tall hence the king size was a key criteria in our search.

"Wouldn't recommend if travelling with a baby."
Parking is very limited and not directly outside the property, which is up a narrow bumpy path with steps. Travel cot only just fit in the bedroom and the doors were very squeaky so woke the baby. No microwave. Floors were quite dirty and there were a few ants about.
Think it would be very nice for a single adult or couple. Lovely wood burning stove (although weather was too nice for us to try it). Large comfortable bed. Bathroom is lovely, huge shower and a bath. Kitchen stocked with washing up liquid etc. Really pretty area, short walk into village where there are several pubs and cafes.

"We stayed for 2 nights."
When we arrived the heating had been put on and the cottage was lovely and warm
We also used the wood burning stove on both evenings and there was some logs and kindling provided (enough for one day which saved us getting some on the 1st night)
The cottage is tastefully furnished and decorated. (which was a big selling point when we booked)
Some really lovely quality fixtures and fittings such as the polished stone used on the kitchen floor and worktops, and the jute carpet in the bedroom and stairs.
We also appreciated the books on the shelves and the lovely products in the bathroom
The aga took a little bit of getting used to, but now we have, we will look forward to using it on our next stay.
The cottage was also spotlessly clean throughout.
Thank you very much for your lovely feedback, we are so pleased you enjoyed your stay.

"Thé property was extremely difficult to find."
There were days when it was cold in the cottage , So I bought wood.
It would have been nice to have just something basic to eat like bread or fresh milk, already in the fridge.
Some people arrive late and it’s a stress going shopping after a long day travelling.
The sitting room was spacious and comfortable, as was the bathroom.
Rubbish was a problem. No council bins anywhere on the property.
Impossible to contact the owner by mail or by telephone.
A pretty cottage, but I would not rebook it.

It was easy to keep warm. The kitchen had plenty of what was needed including tea and coffee (thanks). There was a washing machine we didn't need to use.
The books on the shelves were interesting and I purchased one similar from the local shops - book not shelf!

"This is a beautiful very small cottage."
We were cosy and comfortable all week. The walking was great.
As other guests have mentioned access from the street is awkward. The sloping path and steps are very uneven and were very slippy when we were there. The stay could be made much better with a little more thought. Supplies in the house are a little mean. For example there are not many mugs, glasses or cutlery meaning we were constantly washing up. The instructions for appliances are very brief and some guidance is just wrong. E.g. There is no outside bin and the guidance on where we could leave rubbish was inaccurate. It is a shame that this attention to detail spoils such a lovely cottage.

"This is a beautiful cottage, spotless and tastefully furnished and decorated."
Perfectly located for walks and pubs. As other reviews have noted, the photos make it look more isolated than it is, and they really needn’t . The location is fine unless you need step-free access. As usual with self-catered cottages, knives are blunt, pans are cheap and there was only one tea towel for a week, but everything else was fantastic and we’d certainly return in a heartbeat.

"Howgill cottage is located in an excellent position for visiting the Western Dales and the Lake District."
The area around Sedbergh is beautiful and fantastic walking and cycling country. Sedbergh itself is also an attractive non-touristy town.
The cottage itself was compact, well presented and homely. The washing machine was a real bonus.
We found the electric Aga a bit of a faff for cooking (especially for making toast) and would have preferred a conventional cooker and toaster. Crockery and cutlery could have been more abundant as there were only 4 of each item and only 2 glasses & 2 wine glasses for example. There is no dishwasher. We managed to chip a mug and the owner was kind enough to replace it on our behalf. Thank you.
We did feel that the steep stairs and cobbled path (and steps to the cottage) should have been better highlighted in the listing as this would make it unsuitable for young children or the elderly. The cobbles were covered in moss and were quite slippery when wet. Also the hedge along the side of the path could have done with some cutting back. When leaving the path to cross the road, you had to be especially cautious as it was tricky to see oncoming cars and we had a couple of near misses.
There is little outside space at the cottage, just a small table and 2 chairs immediately in front of the house. The TV could do with being updated and it would be nice to add a radio/bluetooth speaker. Wifi was very good.
All in all, we had a good stay at Howgill Cottage. This holiday home could be made excellent with a few of the above modifications.

"We had a lovely relaxing break, it was quiet, clean, beautifully decorated and having a wood burning stove was such a treat!"
The Aga was easy to use and the bed very comfy. It’s worth mentioning that the Cottage is set back from the road behind a row of other cottages - There are several steps on the roadside up to a cobbled pathway which takes you to the Cottage. I was disappointed this wasn’t mentioned in the listing as my husband has a disability. This made the access more tricky for him :(

The cottage is very cosy and has been done to a very high standard; we loved having a wood-burner and the Aga. Information left for guests was great; both how to use the facilities in the cottage and what is available and recommended nearby. Great location a short walk from plenty of pubs, cafes and shops. We had a small issue with a piece of furniture which we reported to the owner who sorted it out incredibly swiftly. It was hard to find (especially when dark) but after a quick call to the owner we managed to find it tucked away through a small alley to the left side of another cottage on the road. We had to park down the road but it wasn't a problem. The cottage was extremely clean and quaint. Kitchen had aga and fridge. No toaster or microwave but that's what made it great. We took a quick walk into the little village which took about 20 minutes and stopped off for lunch at one of the pubs. Would recommend for a romantic break for two
