  • "This was a little gem of a place… the cottage is beautiful and situated in stunning countryside."

Very well equipped with no fussy ornaments etc which is just how we like it. I think the only thing is the beds upstairs were not very comfortable but this made us appreciate our own bed when we got back home! We would definitely like to go back to the cottage again as it’s in such a lovely quiet peaceful spot but is located a very convenient distance to amenities and there are some lovely places to eat not too far away too. We thoroughly enjoyed our weeks stay.

  • "This is a quaint cottage very well equipped."

Clean and comfortable beds. It is an old thick walled cottage so in the autumn nights it is quite cool . The heating is controlled by owner so only works twice a day early morning and 2 hrs in the evening The multi fuel fire is a lovely touch but the heat only warms the sitting room ,so when moving to other areas it is cool . The stairs from the bedroom could be a challenge for the less mobile or mature generation . The shower cubicle is a snug fit which is a shame as the bathroom could have accommodated a larger one . However these are my own opinion and just an observation for intended bookings . Beautified walks and plenty of places to visit .

The village of Capel Bangor does not have any amenities with the nearest shop being about 4 miles from the cottage. The pub in the village only opens from Thursday to Sunday so Aberystwyth is the nearest town should you want to eat out.

Lots of helpful information around the cottage. The weather has been so hot and a fan was very welcome. I would just consider net curtains to let fresh air in and insects out on an evening. But that it’s just a suggestion as everything else was fantastic. Amazing places to visit.

We found the beds comfortable. There are plenty of electric sockets. The kitchen is a small but was fitted with a large fridge and freezer, nice oven and plenty of crockery and cooking utensils and there was cupboard space for groceries. Lots of small things have been thought of such as t-towels, washing up liquid and dish cleaning cloth, boxes of tissues, toilet paper, drying rack, iron and ironing board, broom, dustpan and brush etc. We were pleased to find a few DVD films, board games, local history books and pamphlets. The cottage has been decorated and furnished nicely and was very clean. The stairs are quite steep but was not a problem for us. We had a lovely holiday and hope to stay again.

We are glad you enjoyed your stay. Thank you for your positive comments. Property Owner

  • "We loved the cottage and the location - very comfortable and with good facilities."

One thing I would suggest is getting a blind for the velux window in the upstairs bedroom. Particularly in the Summer the light will wake people up very early! It would be good to have more privacy in the upstairs bedroom so a stud wall across where the railings are with a door would make it a much more attractive for couples. I imagine it is possible to put the two twin beds together to make a double - the option to do this would be good. Sorry this sounds negative - I am just suggesting a couple of improvements. We had a lovely time and loved having access the river just across the road - our dog really enjoyed paddling!

Thank you for your suggestions, glad you had a lovely time. Property Owner

  • "A perfect location for dog and I to visit contacts in the Aberystwyth area."

The cottage was immaculately clean and freshly decorated. As it turned chilly I was especially thankful that the heating was efficient for an extra degree or two for a short time in the morning. I agree with other visitors that a double bed (or a linked singles) would be much better upstairs. I was alone this time so it did not matter - but for the future? The bunk bed was really more suitable for children. I slept there because it was near the bathroom but next visit will sleep upstairs. Te space under the stairs was excellent for the dog crate. I also agree that the low wall outside needs a half meter fence to make it more dog secure. My dog does not jump thankfully but I was a little nervous. Parking in the adjacent layby was convenient and felt safe. The road is not busy but the few drivers mostly seemed to be travelling far too fast! The wood burning stove was a bonus and easy to use. I was impressed with the file of appliance instructions although the ones I used were simple to operate. Cooking facilities excellent. I do like to find a useful cupboard full of odds and ends left by previous visitors (herbs, oil, etc) and there was not one, but imagine this might be a covid regulation? I did not have time to be a tourist during this visit but I know the area well and the cottage is in a great location for walking, and bird watching. Feeding the red kites at Nant yr Arian is a sight not to be missed. Overall ideal and if I travel alone again I will hope to return. I am not sure why Sykes have Friday to Friday bookings? This seems curious as most people take a week off work and I suspect many, like me, have to arrive on Saturday thus miss a days holiday.

We are glad you enjoyed your stay and hope to return. As for Friday to Friday bookings that is our choice due to personal circumstances. Property Owner

  • "Water had run out by the evening of day 4."

Couldn't get signal in the house to call so had to drive up the road to telephone the owner. He later let me know a neighbour would fill the water tank in the evening. 24 hours later. Apparently the neighbour filled the tank but there was an airlock the land lord thought and still no water. The owner said he would come by the next morning. Which would be 36 hours without water. No drinking water, flushing loo or ability to wash up. We have pride so bought bottled water to manage this. Owner intimated that he was surprised the water was gone? And questioned how many people were staying. So if you are able to ration your water, it is a pleasant place to stay. I told the landlord I wouldn't stay another night without water and that we were leaving. (As I like to wash) the landlord did not reply and offered no apology or financial recompense. Otherwise lovely place if you can do without water for a few days and don't need a double bed.

Very fast road outside the property and although dog friendly which is great, the road is a huge hazard as dog could easily clear the low wall. Having been in touch with my bank I was informed that there was no reason on their part for you not to take Automatic payment for our final balance. To send me two important emails to my junk mail was unsatisfactory. I check my regular inbox daily but like a lot of people don’t always do the same for my junk mail and then to take payment 3 days later for the rest of the deposit. didn’t help with customer relations. Your response being that I should check that a payment had been made! However I was very happy with the alternate acccomodation suggested and would return again if allowed to book through a different company. We were 13 miles away from my daughter who had the other shepherds hut which could have been better for my elderly parent. Please sent my congratulations to the owners of Penlon for their excellent facility which helped justify the extra cost incurred.

  • "If you are looking for a "romantic" holiday then you do well to miss booking Penlon because with Bunk bed downstairs and Twin beds upstairs sleeping arrangements are NOT very romantic at all."

Don't think to yourself that you can push the twin beds together because they are thick pine and there is still a gap between them so you can not make them into a double bed. As for the bunk bed the least I say about that the better (the scabs on my head tell the story) !!! If, however, sleeping in twin beds and bunk beds doesn't bother you then this is the place to book. At 07.45 am there is the rush hour to contend with - well...….three cars heading left to right!! (Lol) and then the odd (and I do mean odd) car or tractor during the day and the rest of the day you can sit and listen to the silence. Watch out for the Red Kites and Buzzards that fly over the cottage every day and make sure you go to the Butterfly Farm that is just down the lane. If you need to use your mobile phone you might well find yourself out of luck as the signal comes and goes (mainly goes!).
