Lovely comfy beds, made for a great nights sleep .Plenty of space in the garage to store our bikes ( there were 4 of us ) .Lots or walks & cycle trails directly from the door so no need to use the cars. • "Had a wonderful week at Penlone Cottage the cottage is very clean and very well equipped."

On arrival the hosts had left us milk, welsh cakes and two small bottles of wine, thank you. We loved watching the bird life around the cottage and had many different species visiting the feeding station on the property (bring your own food for them though) It is situated down a quiet lane adjacent to a horse trekking centre, Red Kites can also be seen across the fields by the cottage. It is within easy walking distance of Rhayader and the Caban Coch dam and visitor centre and also to the Red Kite feeding centre at Grigin Farm (about 40 minute walk away) which is a wonderful way to spend an afternoon watching the Red Kites. A little further afield are the other Elan valley dams which are worth visiting. If you like cycling there are two cycle routes (8 &81) which are well maintained. A bonus for us was that it is in a "Dark sky" area which gave us a superb view of the stars without light pollution. We would have no hesitation in recommending this property for a holiday.

Everything was as described and we were lucky to have mostly great weather, but even on the rainy day we enjoyed the little summer house. Very dog friendly, garden quite safe and kitchen well equipped (even an air fryer!). Locally the pubs and shops are great, our favourite was The Triangle but all were again dog friendly. We enjoyed glorious weather so made the area even more special. Cottage very spacious with comfy sofa’s, beds and a great shower. We and our dog made friends with the horses next door who provided lots of entertainment! Kitchen equipment however is sadly lacking and this let the cottage down. We were a party of four but, for example, sets of bowls in three. No bread bin or airtight containers provided which are usually standard items. We coped well with the Rayburn as have used an aga before, however the saucepans provided were not good as heat travelled up the handles and we almost burnt our hands. Also no casserole dish with a lid to put into the Rayburn. This may seem picky but is important if you are planning to eat in a lot. Such a shame as we loved the rest of the cottage.

The cottage was warm - which was needed as we had snow at the end of our week. There was no mobile signal for us though there is Wi-Fi in the cottage. If you walk along the lane opposite the cottage it brings you to the path where you can either walk to the Elan visitor centre or Rhayader in the opposite direction.

Mobile signal is a problem as in a narrow valley but does work with Wi fi as stated in description there is signal in the Garden room. Property Owner

Bed was comfortable and a lovely bathroom. The kitchen was quite spacious for a cottage and well equipped. Although I adapted to the Rayburn cooker quickly I would suggest an upgrade to a more modern and efficient cooker with the gas hob on top as opposed to the hob being on another worktop separate from the cooker, hence creating more worktop area. We stayed over the Christmas week so it was dark early and a brighter outside light would have been better. These are a couple of suggestions and not complaints as I would definitely stay at Penlone cottage again.

  • "I agree with previous reviews that Penlone cottage was a comfortable cottage in a tranquil setting."

There are a few things that need attention that would have improved our experience and resulted in a higher rating Firstly the cottage is for 4 people and yet there were only 2 cups and saucers (yes there were ample mugs), only 3 wine glasses and a mismatch of other glasses and unusually there were no egg cups. Even though a dish brush was provided there was no dishcloth for wiping down surfaces in the kitchen, this has always been provided in previous Sykes cottages. The lane directly opposite the cottage provides an easy, safe 5 minute walk to the main road where visitors to the cottage can pick up the walk to Rhayader or the Elan Valley. It would have been useful to have had this information provided, I have left a hand drawn map in the information folder at the cottage as we couldn't find anything similar in the information provided. We had an enjoyable week in the cottage and loved the new experience of using a rayburn oven for cooking, the daily walks to either Rhayader or the Elan Valley were thoroughly enjoyed as was also the exploration and walks around the reservoirs. On a final note, I was surprised to see two very large shaggy rugs covering the carpet in the lounge and dining room. As the only effective way of cleaning these is by lifting and shaking I am not sure how practical they are, they kept ridging and it was difficult to keep them flat.

    Thankyou Property Owner

The summer house is a great place to relax and enjoy the surrounding countryside. The phone signal is troublesome but no worse than in a lot of areas in Wales. Keep an eye out for the red kites. Gigrin Farm is only five minutes away and worth prebooking. The garden has wrens and they are amazing to see. All in all a great place to stay.

.. very comfortable, good shower & bath, nice garden and summerhouse, useful garage for bikes, etc. Well equipped though my wife cannot get on with the Rayburn, too slow and not controllable enough. The microwave and George Foreman grill more than compensated for this. Didn't want the TV much but it had Netflix and Amazon Prime (not Sky as mentioned in the instructions). The internet was okay much of the time for emails and general use but it did fluctuate, particularly in the evenings when the speed could drop below 1 mbps which took Netflix and Amazon Prime 'off the menu'. The cottage itself is very well maintained with a gazebo/conservatory at the top of the garden which overlooks the field where the Kite roost. You can get a lovely full english breakfast at The Old Swan Tea Rooms in Rhayader which is only a 10 minute drive away. The furniture is nice & comfortable too, including the bed. The shower upstairs is the nicest one (pressure & water temperature control) I have used on a cottage holiday or even in a five star hotel; most unexpected & much appreciated. It is possible to make several different walks directly from the cottage. Depending upon how far you usually walk, why not make use of the nearby national cycle route to walk into Rhayader or to the Elan Hotel &/or ElanValley Visitor Centre? The locals I met on that path were very friendly and helpful My visit was over Christmas and the cottage was decorated simply but beautifully with some lovely gifts left for me.
