  • "The Cottage was adequate for our needs although we do feel it is looking tired and perhaps ready for an up grade having stayed at more well equipped and better furnished cottages."

The TV sound only worked on occasions and we think it needs to be upgraded to a Smart TV but the choice of games and puzzles were very generous. The compliment of crockery and cutlery was very good. Having a Hairdryer in the cottage would also be helpful. The garden is very generously sized and the views were stunning with easy access to the cottage.

  • "An amazing property and location."

A very big house for just us two but so comfortable and warm. A lovely food basket and flowers were left by Hazel, t hank you. Our Westie Rumble loved the garden and paddock, the views were magnificent. I would mention that we found the property very hard to find as it was so out of the way. Much further from Kirriemuir than was expected. The directions on Sykes info needed to be more explicit eg a mention of the villages passing through not just road numbers. Otherwise, a glorious property and area.

Only complaint is the water pressure, very low pressure. Could do with a Danfoss water pressure system, like they have in the white bungalow. If you use the shower down stairs there is no water for the shower to be used upstairs. Other than that it is all very nice.

However we had a MAJOR problem with the fireplace in the back room. It smelt like paraffin and old smoke the whole time we were there. (It was very strong) We had the host come and she told us to light the fire the for the whole time but 1. What if you don’t want the fire on the whole time. 2. She only gave us enough logs to last 1 day. This is a major flaw and we spent the entire time trying to relax in the bedroom so no I wouldn’t recommend this place unless that’s fixed. They also had another fire place in the lounge which was fine - so I don’t understand the atrocious smell. We didn’t get what we paid for. The TV didn’t work and kept turning itself off - needs replacing. We couldn’t even connect our laptop, so no Netflix. The Wi-Fi is also awful so you can’t use it at all. No blind in the kitchen, a man came past to go to the garage and could see in. The shower head adjustment is also broken upstairs and the shower head nearly fell on my head. There was also a pot lid with a broken handle and a dirty tea towel. The host however was lovely but there needs to be up keep as this wasn’t really good enough.

Didn't want to leave, loved the area, fantastic welcome gift box, would definitely stay again, only criticism would be that the wood burners down draught smoke in rooms, but didn't need wood burners on as the property was more than warm enough with large radiators throughout even with the minus temperature outside. There was also two wood burning stoves but no fire guard .As it was warm weather we didn’t use them but might be useful if there were young children staying.

We had a lovely peaceful holiday with beautiful views over to the hills above the valley. It is remote which means difficulties with internet connection but the new mast will soon be switched on and improve that. Kirriemuir is near with a good golf course. Dundee is within easy reach as well as Perth. We went to the Edinburgh Festival Fringe which was great fun but a bit of a way to go. The landlady, Hazel is kind and welcoming and left us lovely supplies to come in to. We went to the sheepdog trials at the hotel at the end of the valley. That was fascinating and made it clear how difficult sheep are to handle. We visited Rottal Steading and Garden and bought vegetables which where picked from the ground in front of us. Really fresh and lovely veg to be recommended. We loved this holiday and have returned refreshed. We would love to rebook.

Well equipped and spotlessly clean, it was the perfect base to appreciate the breathtaking panoramic scenery of Glen Clova with spectacular views from the 2 upstairs bedrooms and lounge/dining room downstairs and it is really stunning. All bedrooms are very spacious and very tastefully furnished. Hazel and Rory went above and beyond to assist us when our car broke down in the middle of the Glen and kindly towed us to the cottage. We arrived to one of the best welcome packages we have ever had at a cottage - a wooden crate filled with Scottish biscuits, cheese, crisps, snacks and even a little raspberry gin and tonics. Hazel had left fresh flowers in nearly every room. The wildlife is stunning here. Golden Eagles were nesting at the back of the house circled at dusk and we were visited by an Osprey 3 times during the week. The back and side lawns are filled with baby rabbits in the morning and evening with the occasional stoat visit. Lapwings, Oystercatchers, Black Redstarts, red legged partridges and a curlew were regular evening visitors with 170+ lapwings counted one evening. The only animal we sadly failed to catch sight of was the red squirrels. We will certainly be planning a return visit in the future!

Spacious interior, well decorated and furnished. Wifi isn't amazing but with all the outside space and nature around, it is the last thing on your mind. Could do with some extra/new pans in the kitchen, but otherwise well stocked with everything you need. Walks nearby are incredible, from gentle strolls to harder climbs. Forfar nearby was essential for fuel and food shopping - we were also able to order a delivery from Tesco which was really handy for the first evening. We came with 2 dogs, both of whom loved the gardens. Fair warning- there are LOTS of rabbits (we stayed in July), so any prey driven dogs would need to be watched in the larger garden area. Both gardens are secure unless you have a super small dog, with plenty of space to run around. The owner also left dog bowls and some treats in the welcome hamper which were appreciated! Overall we really loved our holiday and the cottage was an excellent base to explore from. Would definitely return for a longer stay, there's so much to do in the surrounding area. Thank you!

There are two enclosed gardens which are perfectly safe for your dogs to use and the views are INCREDIBLE! The house is quite remote in Glen Cova and will take you about 20mins to get to the closest town (Forfar) but we loved the remoteness of it and just enjoyed the beautiful scenery and nature around us, it was simply gorgeous. Hazel was brilliant - no ask was too much and she was extremely welcoming. Our only feedback would be that the house could do with some new cooking pans, a new cooker hood and perhaps a new oven! A little TLC on the place would go a long way, but DO NOT let that put you off because the place is so homely, really big and perfect for a trip away whether there is just two of you or a whole family!

It was absolutely perfect, so perfect we even got engaged whilst staying here! The farmhouse is situated within Glenclova. The views were incredible to wake up to everyday which added to how special this place was. You are right in the middle of the glen surrounded by hills and wildlife. There are so many stunning walks around you and if you like hiking like us Mayar and Driesh are only a 15 minute drive from the house! The farmhouse was immaculate inside and it was so much bigger than we expected. The wood burning stoves made it more cosier than it already was and there was plenty fire wood left for us to use. Even although this was a big house the central heating was great, you will never be cold in this house. The shower downstairs was great too. The farmhouse was modern and very fresh inside. Hazel had even put fresh flowers in all the vases for us which was a lovely touch. The garden is huge and is fully enclosed which was ideal for our dog. There is also a pic nic table in the garden, we had breakfast outside a few times whilst looking out over the Glen! There are even a few really nice places close by if you want to eat out sometimes. Hazel was a fantastic host. Very friendly and always more than happy to answer any questions we had. She even made a little welcome pack up for us with treats which was lovely. We are already planning our next trip back! A very special holiday we will never forget.

  • "We had a fabulous Christmas week at White Hillocks."

The house is warm, spacious, extremely comfortable and very attractive. All rooms are very generously sized and the house lends itself to relaxed leisure time at home. The dining room is so comfortable it could serve as a second sitting room, especially as it too has a woodturning stove. There are 2 porches. One is useful as a boot/coat room. The other, if staying in winter, can be used as we did as an overflow pantry. We took the whole of Christmas with us and cooked Christmas dinner. There was plenty of cold storage in the back porch. There is plenty of furniture adding to the comfort level. There is ample wood for both fires. There are 2 good sized secure gardens which in good summer weather would be fabulous to sit out in as the views are stunning. The house has a welcoming feel in its own right but this was emphasised by the generous welcome gifts and gestures of the owners. Extremely helpful people who instantly respond to all queries and communication generally is excellent. River South Esk is immediately nearby and in winter the white water from Glenn Doll is impressive. Wildlife and bird life sightings are a treat. We went to see the reindeer herd near Cairngorm which, although over a 2 hour journey, was worth it. The house is in a remote situation surrounded by beautiful scenery. It sits at the beginning of Glenn Clova and immediately on a single track road which in itself is a 6 mile scenic drive to a hotel further on, and an even more wilderness further 3 mile drive (with passing places, despite the sign to the contrary) to the Glenn Doll ranger station. There is a car park here, and helpful staff to advise on walk routes and climbs from this point. The road goes no further from this point which contributes to the peaceful, wild atmosphere. Be aware, mobile signal disappears as you approach the house. You will need to drive 6 to 8 miles for supplies. Internet is satisfactory. Teenagers didn't complain.

  • "We loved the peaceful location of White Hillocks Farm House."

It was the perfect antidote to a busy life in a noisy town. (We have friends who live near Memus so we were already familiar with the glen.) I took early morning walks along the road and rarely encountered anyone except the shepherds in their vehicles who were very busy with lambing. If you love birds then you'll delight in the variety to be found in Glen Clova. Many can be observed from the living room but the best experience, of course, is outside where you can hear their calls. If you are a good walker there is much to explore within a few miles. If you are an experienced walker then the sky's the limit, almost literally as there are hills to climb which often become covered in cloud. Don't feel you need to be a mountaineer though. We took my elderly mother of 85 years up one hillside! Her mobility is good for her age although she rarely goes on a long walk. She was thrilled with the achievement and the stunning view. Transport is necessary to get further afield and the nearest shop is 7 miles away. Eating out we found the Drovers Arms at Memus to be very good. Glen Clova Hotel was overpriced and not particularly good with quite a restricted menu. Plus we had to wait ages for our lunches. (And we are very patient people.) If you want a cheaper eat then go to Tiffins in Forfar. It's located near the museum. Great for coffee and lunches. A couple of criticisms of the house: one which others have pointed out is that there are no wardrobes. We used the hooks on the back of every door and the bannister at the top of the stairs. Also the lighting in the living room is poor unless one uses the overhead light which, in our opinion, spoils the ambience of the room. Another sidelamp would be helpful. Not an issue if everyone uses devices to read but sometimes it's good to have a break from technology and read a physical book. All that being said there is so much to recommend this accommodation. We hope we can go again and experience it and the beautiful surroundings in another season.

  • "Loved it! The cottage was superb, excellent for holidaying with dogs as kitchen and dining room have hard floor so easy to clean up after them and the property has a large enclosed garden."

Two log burners, central heating and lots of space. Beds are comfy and living room very cosy. The cottage is very tastefully furnished. The situation of the cottage is very remote but perfect as a get away. Glen Doll is about 5 miles north of the property and has wonderful walks with lots of wildlife. The owners could not have been more friendly or helpful. The only thing holding me back from praising this cottage more; is purely selfish -if it becomes too popular, then we may struggle to book it again.

  • "Fantastic holiday."

The cottage had ample room for our 2 families. Great space in the rooms for the little ones to play in. Large kitchen for the foodies to prepare some lovely family meals. Nice touch on entry to be provided with cheese, crisps, etc. The beds were extremely comfy (make sure you bag the Queen size bed...wow!). As for the views - spectacular! Location was great for walkers / climbers in one direction (Glen Clova and Glen Doll) and for castles / towns (Glamis & Dundee). Having 2 dogs the gardens are more than enough for them to run around. For the twitchers out there (like me) it was great to have a pair of resident buzzards in the area flying overhead everyday. The only downside is someone has already booked October half term next year so will have to look for another time of year to return.

  • "Lovely traditional farmhouse."

Had everything we needed for two adults and 3 kids for a week. We went in October and it was cozy and warm. Quite remote and out the way, but that's what we were after. Owner came round to see us night we arrived, seemed really nice. Answered our emails looking for recommendations for places to eat etc. very promptly. Big plus - Tesco deliver here, so our shopping turned up within an hour of us arriving. Saves a load of hassle. We had a really good week. Visited Dundee V&A and The McManus Galleries, did The Enchanted Forest at Pitlochry with the kids (you'll need tickets booked way in advance for this) and over to Anstruther in Fife for fish & chips, via Scotland's Secret Bunker. I'd recommend and we would definitely consider staying at White Hillocks again.

  • "What a fabulous cottage!"

So bright, clean and spacious. Scenic location, quite remote. We loved seeing all the wildlife each day from the cottage windows; sheep, cows, pheasants, rabbits, partridges, birds of prey etc Cherry on the cake for my twin boys were the boxes of Lego left by owner for them to play with following a previsit conversation we had. All about the little details. Would advise adding on the direction notes to take b955 road towards Rottal...we took the long road around Glen Clova on arrival! Oops!

  • "The cottage was beautifully decorated; clean and comfortable."

No expense had been spared on the facilities and it was a fabulous place to stay. The location suited us perfectly - quiet; remote and surrounded only by nature. It was delightful watching the rabbits play in the garden and our 2 Labradors had hours of endless fun sniffing the bunny trails each morning. The owner of the cottage was attentive without being intrusive and left a lovely welcoming note and goodie box. The locality was beautiful and we had plenty of things to do and will definitely visit again.

  • "There was only one downside to the cottage in that there was no garden furniture which meant we spent a lot of time indoors instead of enjoying the magnificent weather they were experiencing."

The owner did explain that the furniture was on order but unfortunately did not come whilst we were there. We did understand that Kirriemuir did not not normally get the type of weather that everyone is experiencing and that was why there was no garden furniture available.

KIRRIEMUIR

Dundee 18 miles, Aberdeen 55.2 miles

Kirriemuir is a lovely red sandstone town in the valley of Strathmore, regarded as the gateway to the Angus Glens, which offer some of Scotland's most unspoiled landscape. The town is home to the birthplace of novelist JM Barrie, creator of the much-loved children's character Peter Pan and the house is now a museum looked after by the National Trust for Scotland. A statue of Peter Pan can be found in the town. Kirriemuir also offers Glamis Castle and the historic Pictish Stones at Meigle, while the Angus Glens offer great hill walking and climbing.
