"Although we had a great stay, it felt like the cottage was always working against us."
I feel like the owners need to spend a couple of nights there themselves, and they'd immediately notice the major shortfalls. The cottage was beautifully adorned and very cozy, however there were a couple of huge issues. First and foremost: the lack of real curtains. The loft velux had no covering at all, and dawn sun streamed in directly onto the bed, rendering a good night's sleep impossible. In the ground floor bedroom, the thin fabric gave no respite to the 4 bright pub lights directly outside the window. Even with the curtains closed, it was bright enough to read by, all through the night. Secondly: the heating. There was plenty of radiators, however the controls were locked and they were on full blast during bedtime, making the place like a sauna. I know some people like it warm, but we did not. The owners did adjust the heating for us when emailed, thankfully, but letting the user at least turn off the heating would be a major improvement. A couple of other things: There was no hair dryer. Only one roll of decent loo roll before you had to revert to the tracing paper style stuff you get in public toilets. The front door lock kept sticking, and sometimes it felt like we're were trapped in/out. The oven wouldn't work. After realising it was switched off at the wall we got the hobs to work, but the oven wouldn't come on. Finally, it's not the cottage's fault, but it might be good to make guests aware that if you visit outside the summer months, there is very little choice of evening meals. There was a chip shop, and one restaurant just out of the village. Everywhere else doesn't serve food until at least April. Just something to be aware of.
