  • "It's always a great pleasure to stay at Shepherd's Cottage with its unique tranquil position and homely feel."

Last house in the popular village (with rail links and good facilities) and facing towards the restful hillside with its sheep and ponies - so best of both worlds. Nice that the cottage now has wi-fi (not that you really come to such a place to stare at screens).

  • "We had a most enjoyable holiday at Shepherd’s Cottage, but were disappointed not to have been told until we had paid in full that it was necessary to reverse the car about 100 yards down a very narrow track, and then to park on a sloping, inaccessible “lay-by” which could be more accurately described as an indent in the grass beside a public footpath."

This needs to be made much more clear in the spec. We would likely not have come if we had known this. Also, we found the kitchen poorly equipped (not even a serving spoon to dish out food) or a knife that cut anything. The grill function of the oven did not work. But most frustrating of all was the instructions book, which was very out of date. The instructions for the heating had been crossed out, but no new ones had been entered, so we really did not know what we were supposed to do, and therefore turned everything off on going out. And the WiFi joining code was on a scrappy piece of paper floating loose in the book. Please at least bring the manual up to date. The “boot room” was not very accessible, and we did not want to leave coats and boots in there as it was cold and damp. This all sounds very negative, and we did enjoy our stay, but these practicalities really got in the way, and we were annoyed that the spec was not more informative, especially about the parking. This really should have been made clear at the outset, not after we had paid in full.

  • "I can't say enogh good things about Shepherds Cottage, it is a wonderful, homely and cosy cottage with beautiful views over the lush rolling hills and fantastic walks literally from the door."

Every window I'd walk pass I couldn't help but stop and stare out at the view. Fantastic having a National Trust centre 5 minutes away too, detailing the surrounding walks, with adjoining café. We enjoyed being in the living room, amazing views of course, but also cosy in the evenings snuggled up, with plenty of books/maps to choose from, plus a tv. Bedrooms were lovely, comfortable beds and nice linen, each room with storage and more glorious views! The bathroom was decorated to a high standard, and soft towels provided, which is always a nice touch. The only thing I would mention would be to provide a dog food/water bowl, I didn't think to bring ours for the dog (Unless there was one hiding somewhere that I didnt notice, apologies if so) We will definitely come and stay again, looking forward to it already!

Secure garden for the puppy was a bonus.

  • "Sensational location on the long mynd and overlooking carding Mill valley."

The cottage is a cute olde world, very warm and cosy great place to relax in. No traffic noise yet a 10 minute walk into Church Stretton for provisions via Rectory wood. Loved Vine and Co. They literally sell everything, the butchers, bakery and Thai restaurant. Mortimer forest from Black Pool carpark (free) is huge and its a nice walk into Ludlow afterwards. Ensure you have GPS or footpath app with live location as it's not very well signposted to find the trails. Small gripe, the oven trays and small frypan have burnt on grease and there was no brillo pad to remove it so I didn't use them and anyway it was an excuse to buy a cooked breakfast at the Hollybush cafe. I couldn't find a first aid kit for a plaster after lots of walking either

  • "We loved the cosiness of the cottage, lovely warm kitchen."

The location and views wonderful. On the minus side we couldn't work out how to get the towel rail in the bathroom to work, not a problem really as it was quite warmish weather-wise. The shower was super, which makes such a difference, and it was all comfy and clean. You said no Wi-fi but we picked it up from the router and that worked well using our iPhones. Lots of books, maps etc. The one drawback that I feel worth mentioning is the parking. It says own parking space which is a bit of a stretch! You need to be fairly intrepid to back into the very small and cambered pull in, and this is not something to do at night, so we parked just below the cattle grid and walked to and from the cottage which was fine, and on leaving parked just over the grid at the start of the track, and walked our luggage to the car. Might be worth mentioning to others. Other than that that it was a lovely stay. Julia and Kathy

Reversing back to the road wasn't a problem. My 4th visit to Church Stretton & I loved it again. Walking & nature wonderful. We did two walks straight from the door. Only negative thing was the oven need cleaning desperately.

Location was great - town in walking distance with good food stores and plenty of pubs, cafes and more specialist stores. View from lounge was stunning. So many great walks starting from the front door - very happy. One small issue instantly fixed with no fuss - very friendly and helpful owner, and neighbours very friendly and chatty too. Parking was fine - reversing back to road was no problem.

The views are beautiful over Cardingmill valley from the dining table and bedrooms. Bathroom has been recently modernised and the storage heaters make the place really cozy along with the electric fire. We were lucky enough for it to snow while we stayed which added a magical touch to our break. Stretton is a walk away to the shops, pubs & restaurants. If you can cope with the short row of steep steps from the parking space to the cottage I would highly recommend this place. Wonderful.

It is fairly basic but has almost everything you might need. It was really warm and cosy! Such a delight to watch the constantly changing views from the windows, and to be able to access so many walks straight from the cottage. We hope to be back. On a minor note, some of the kitchen utensils are so well-used that they don't look clean. That didn't detract from the holiday, but thought we should mention it.

  • "The cottage was clean and warm and suited us perfectly for our 2 day stay."

We did have a few challenges. The kitchen is very tiny so when the grill is on you can't get to the sink. There is no welcome pack but this may be normal with Sykes cottages. Better instructions to the cottage would have been helpful as the post code doesn't take you to the cottage and parking is difficult. Very helpful owners.

Everything we needed was included. Breathtaking scenery, fabulous walks from the doorstep. We managed to complete quite a few of the walks in Carding Mill and The Long Mynd and again the scenery on these walks was absolutely breathtaking. If like us you don't drive, going into Church Stretton for shopping, nearly everyday was a bit of a pain especially carrying the shopping back uphill, we found it easier coming through the Carding Mill Valley carpark. We did find that Sainsbury's will deliver to the cottage which was a godsend. A massive thank you to the owners for one of the best cottage holidays we've had.

Before making the trip, I spoke to the owner on the 'phone, and I was impressed by his friendly and helpful nature. We were expecting the cottage to be a little cool, what with having no central heating. However, we needn't have worried as we were perfectly snug. KITCHEN AND GARDEN NOT FINE. KITCHEN (a) smell (musty/mouldy) from cupboard under sink, where plates are stored, pipes from washing machine pass through this cupboard (b) washing machine is very old - had to enter each bit of cycle in turn rather than once at start (c) smell in larder (from pipes?) (d) dirt/debris to side of washing machine (e) dog chew under heater in kitchen and (f) hot tap in sink drips if not turned tight. GARDEN (a) overgrown (b) moss on steps/patio and (c) overgrown hedging at top of steps rubs against body. We have photos for many of these issues. Lastly, storage heater instructions confusing - said to keep on at each heater whilst information in cottage said to ensure they were on before leaving. We had to turn them off as far too hot (Jul/Aug) to have on; I set reminder on my phone to turn on before I departed cottage. In short, kitchen needs some items addressed immediately (the smells), a modern washing machine is not an unreasonable ask and the garden needs attention.
