  • "Had a really super time at Penymaes."

Susan was there to welcome us and show us around this lovely cosy 17th Century cottage, but with all the facilities of modern day living. Really well equipped. Many walks can be taken directly from the property in the beautiful Ceriog valley, or one can relax in the lovely garden. Susan provided many extras, wine, freshly baked lemon cake, plus a host of other treats. We picked apples from the garden and blackberries from the hedgerow. Everywhere is so accessible, with so many places to visit, a week wasn’t long enough. Certainly worth another visit. Thank you Susan.

She brought us her delicious lemon drizzle cake which she is now famous for! I had brought dish washer tablets, bin bags etc with me but they were all provided. A proper home from home. My favourite part of the cottage was the walk-n wardrobe which I wasn't expecting. There is so much to do in the area. You can walk into Chirk which has a few pubs and restaurants. There are nice walks along the canal. We managed to walk to Pontcysyllte Aqueduct which I highly recommend. There's a pub in Weston Rhyn which is walk-able and does a lovely Sunday lunch and has a large TV screen and a new pool table. You are well placed for Shrewsbury and Chester. four of us just spent 7 days at Penymaas to celebrate New Year (very good value considering the time of year, worked out at just a tad over £25 per person, per night. You couldn't get B&B for that, and we had the whole cottage, three bedrooms, two bathrooms, a superb Kitchen/diner, very comfortable lounge with huge wood burner that kept the whole cottage very warm and cosy, there is also a laundry room/utility and a boot room to get out of your muddy things before entering the cottage to the kitchen, downstairs bedroom or lounge) Owner lives just behind the cottage but trees and shrubs make sure you are not overlooked and your privacy is assured. Susan (the owner) is very friendly and could not have been more attentive to anything we required, and it has to be said, she is the finest baker of cakes and mince pies in all of Shropshire. Outside, the garden is beautifully maintained with patio heater and possible seating for 22, yes, 22 people, you could hold your own garden party here overlooking the valley towards Chirk and beyond into Wales. Western Rhyn is within 10 minutes walk, with shop and choice of Pubs, recommended is The Plough, a little further to walk in the village but worth it, Landlord extremely friendly to visitors, will meet you wearing a big smile and a bow tie. If Shropshire is on one of your places to visit then do, do consider this cottage, you will not be disappointed. Oh, forgot to mention, the owner of Penymaas also owns another property on the aqueduct over the river Dee which is at 3 to 4 miles, a good walk or a short drive. Low ceilings and doorways in some areas.

To the right is the kitchen with the original quarry tile floor and modern appliances where you can rustle up a tasty meal.

From here, you can access the utility room which leads into a charming single bedroom, a great hideaway from the rest of the house.

Across the hallway is the comfy sitting room which features low wooden beams and a large woodburning stove which is guaranteed to keep you warm, whatever the weather is doing outside.

From the sitting room, stairs lead up to two first floor bedrooms, both with decorative fireplaces, with the master room also boasting an en-suite shower room.

At the rear of the cottage are beautifully manicured lawned gardens, with a patio area where you can sit with a morning coffee as you plan the day’s adventures.
