  • "Clean, comfy cottage, was nice and warm when we arrived, practical with a dog, well equipped and great shower."

Nice walk along the Slate Trail in the village. Close to Anglesey and some lovely beaches, a relaxing stay. As stated parking is on the road but we didn't have a problem. Would book again if we were in that area.

  • "Lovely home had everything we needed."

Perfect for dogs as garden is secure and you don’t need to worry about them escaping. Lovely big kitchen, comfortable beds , and was clean can’t fault that. Only issue (not owners fault ) but worth noting if you drive. Parking was a big issue for us! Loads of people park out the front of house and go up to the houses up the alley way! We had so many people park and leave there car there and there is no where to park if taken. Not sure if there is temporary accommodation near? But loads of different people kept leaving cars there which disturbed us and the dogs and they kept walking by window. Only issue , but that’s nothing to do with the house itself.

  • "This Sykes Cottage Home was a lovely place to stay in a village, not far from Caernarfon."

The bedrooms were all large enough to spread out our things. The lounge, kitchen and dining areas were spacious and well appointed. We were able to have all our main meals in the home. The main bathroom was large and everything functioned very well. The location was great for the hiking that we wanted to do along the coast and inland around Mt. Snowdon. The utility home had functioning washer and drier, which came in handy for our hiking duds. The only area less than perfect was in the the main floor toilet and sink area, which was a tight for larger people and the sink there only provided cold water. Other than that it was great place to stay. Richard

  • "I researched a lot of cottages before choosing this one as we were taking our puppy away for the first time."

The cottage was ideal for our needs. Enough beds for our adult children, a utility room that fitted our dog pen and a back yard that was secure enough for the puppy. The house was cosy and well equipped. We enjoyed the local walks, especially the Slate Trail and the views down to the sea were amazing. The beach at Dinas Dinlle was wonderful and we had a very good lunch at Caffi Brav.

Thank you so much for the lovely feedback. So pleased you enjoyed your time at Caer Rhos, and the local amenities. I totally agree with your comment about Dinas Dinlle beach and Caffi Braf, they really are worth a visit. Diolch x Property Owner

  • "We had a lovely week's stay at Caer Rhos."

Catrin, the owner, emailed me a copy of the guestbook before we came which gave full details of access, how heating/appliances worked etc., which was very useful. The cottage was very comfortable and had all the home appliances we could need. It is handily located close to Caernarfon and Anglesey as well as within reasonable drive times of quite a lot of the North Wales coastal and inland attractions. The wooden/tiled floors downstairs are ideal for the dogs, and there is a lovely public footpath a short stroll away to exercise them first thing in a morning. There is parking for 2 cars right in front of the cottage and, although quite a few people park along the lane we had no problems parking when we got back after our days out. The local Morrisons in Bontnewydd is only a short drive away and very well stocked for all your needs. My 2 friends, I and my 2 dogs had a very enjoyable stay and I would have no hesitation in booking again if we come to the area again.

  • "Lovely clean cottage with good views in a quiet village, perfect location for us."

Dog walks from the door on to lanes/ paths or on to the old railway route for longer walks. Well-equipped kitchen and utility room, comfortable beds and hot shower. There were just two of us and the dog so it was bigger than we needed but would easily have taken 4-6 people. Bread and milk on arrival a thoughtful touch. Local shop and pub only a few minutes drive away (handy for late evening arrival!). Short drive to Caernarfon and Llanberis with good restaurants, shops cafes and easy reach of beaches. Would definitely come again. Thank you :)

Well appointed and spacious rooms. All was clean and tidy with bread and milk on arrival, and it was nice having the family kitchen with tv and sofa as well as a separate living room. Our host was very supportive and kind when we had some personal difficulties unrelated to the rental itself.

Wouldn't hesitate to go back, should we come to the area again. As dog owners/walkers there is a disused old single gauge train line that cuts through the village with excellent views across the bay. Really enjoyed the break and would recommend staying here.

A very peaceful location conveniently situated off the main busy thoroughfare with a relaxing friendly village atmosphere. There were wonderful walks along a disused tram track, commencing almost from the back door of the property and affording a panorama of the town of Caernarfon, its castle with a backdrop of the Menai Straits. • "They have an oil fire in front room which if turned off you would have to phone the owners to put it back on, on the night I turned it down as low as I thought without letting it go out."

The next morning we had message from owner to say they were monitoring the heating and told us to turn it down. The house smelled of damp when we arrived, The owners message put a damper on the whole week which we had been looking forward for two years to see my Mother in a Home as I had not seen her for two years.

We're sorry if you were upset by our message, which we've copied below......................... Hi Catherine, I hope you're having a nice stay in Caer Rhos and that everything is to your satisfaction. We monitor heat and humidity in the house via wi-fi in order to ensure that the house doesn't become damp during the Winter. We noticed this morning that the heat in the living room was averaging 21.6C throughout the night. Would you mind turning the oil stove down to 1 when you're not in there please?. If you need a hand using the stove, then I'd be happy to come over to show you. Kind regards - Emyr Property Owner

  • "Loved the house, in a lovely spot close to Caernarfon."

Facilities are great, very clean and well maintained. Only negatives are that not much is provided in the way of amenities, no hand soap in toilets no cleaning sprays etc in kitchen, and there was a strong smell of gas oil coming from the tank in the garden, perhaps a small leak? Also the extractor hood over the hob doesn’t work effectively. Otherwise we enjoyed our stay very much.

Thanks for your comments and glad you liked the house. We now provide soap in the bathrooms and cleaning sprays etc in the kitchen. Thanks for the heads up about the heating oil. We checked this out straight away of course. Everything seems fine, it's a relatively new double bunded tank. The smell could have been from the boiler that vents into that area, but we couldn't smell anything. Will keep an eye on that though. Property Owner

The property

Bontnewydd 1.9 miles.

Perched in the idyllic hamlet of Rhostryfan near Bontnewydd, Gwynedd, is this wonderful semi-detached house, Caer Rhos.

Enjoying a fantastic location near the Snowdonia National Park and only 5 miles from the stunning coastline, Caer Rhos is a superb dog-friendly choice for a group or a family of six, plus their two canine companions.

This holiday home dates back to 1840 and like many of the houses in Rhostryfan was built for the men who worked at the Moel Tryfan Slate Quarry at the top of the mountain.

The quarry is a spectacular monument to the hard work of these men and was used as a location for the 2002 film, Lara Croft: Tomb Raider.

Be welcomed into the inviting sitting room, where you can look forward to relaxing with loved ones on the plush seating in front of the oil fire, as your favourite show plays out on the Smart TV.

Continue through to the spacious open-plan living area, where you can cook up a storm in the well-equipped kitchen, savour your meal at the dining table for six, and a sitting area with sofa and a Smart TV.

Just off the kitchen, you will find a handy utility and a cloakroom for your convenience.

On warmer days, why not dine alfresco out in the rear enclosed garden, where your dogs can safely run and play?

The garden also has access to a popular public footpath where you can embark on hikes through the rolling countryside and an outbuilding offering storage for bikes.

Follow the stairs up to the first floor, where you will find three beautifully decorated bedrooms, king-size with en-suite shower room, and two twin bedrooms, the latter of which have access to a sleek shower room.

For your local amenities, head into Bontnewydd where you can dine at The Newborough Arms, stock up on essentials at the convenience store, tuck-in to fresh fish and chips from Golden Cod, or picnic in Gypsy Wood Park.

For leisurely walks and cycling opportunities, many local paths are built upon the routes of old slate quarry railway bed in Rhostryfan.

The best example is Lon Eifion which is a very popular cycle path and forms part of the sustrans national cycle network.

The Welsh Highland Railway passes along the bottom of the village and can be used to journey to the foot of Snowdon.

The nearest beach at Dinas Dinlle can be seen from Caer Rhos.

This has an array of cafes, an air museum and an iron age fort on a cliff overlooking the sea.

Only 4 miles away, the magnificent Caernarfon Castle is an UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Caer Rhos is also ideally placed between two Zip World attractions: Penrhyn Quarry (16 miles) and Slate Caverns (30 miles).

For a memorable stay, choose Caer Rhos.
