  • "This is a super cottage within a garden setting and with plenty of parking space."

It's quiet and private. We found it spotlessly clean and well equipped. Sadly, it was the issue of comfort that let it down. The sofas were not comfortable and we had to use every cushion we could find to pad our seating. The worst thing, though, were the pillows. Pillows should be soft and light and, well, pillowy. Pillows here were hard and flat and spent. Pillowcases were stuffed with two flat pillows in order to, I guess, provide height. The result was a hard, uncomfortable pillow. New pillows are essential. This is an issue that can easily be put right. A plus for the cottage is it is down the road from The Pub, a great little pub that I would recommend for drinks.

  • "We enjoyed our stay in Allerthorpe."

Old Oak Cottage is in a great location - the nearby Park & Ride was fantastic for easy trips into York. The owners who live next door provided scones and milk on arrival and were very responsive to a minor issue we experienced at the begining of our holiday.

  • "Bath Towels were smelly."

Kitchen Utensils were opaque/ not washed properly. No kitchen towel/ even a single. Kitchen lights were broken. No bin bags provided to change. Very old/ scratched cup/ you won’t like to drink tea. Floors were too creaky/ you cannot walk when children sleeping. Open wires bunch under tv/ dangerous for young children. Heating was not going above 17 INTERNET was off and on and you do not have mobile internet on EE and VODAPHONE. Laundry stand/ they provide, already broken so no use. Property is good and close to other towns and facilities but they have major Maintenance Issues.

The only complaint from this family, with 5 young children, was received on the second night. Our phone rang 4 times starting from around 10:45pm. The guest was unhappy about the disruptions in internet connection. He inferred angrily that we had a cheap package and demanded that we check with the provider the next morning. The disruptions were likely to be the result of the (then) storm Babet. The internet provider confirmed that the limit and speed were at the highest level and internet package possible and that the guests had 6 devices in use. The remaining complaints were received after the guest’s refusal to pay for extra cleaning costs and a missing item. Towels: All towels are machine washed with softener and tumble dried. Tea towels and extra dish cloth were provided. Kitchen ceiling Lights: The guest had been informed before arrival that 2 of the 5 lights were out. We sought permission for an electrician to fix them but the guest did not want to be disturbed during their stay. Lights have since been fixed. Floors: All bedrooms are carpeted. The lounge, passage ways and the dining room have engineered wood. There is underfloor heating throughout. Laundry airer: Serviceable despite a detached hook (as shown in the photos to Sykes). Now replaced. Extension wires for TV etc.: The guest provided 2 pictures showing wires (out of reach, under a heavy glass table) which had been pulled out with food particles around them. We cannot control where children crawl. However, we shall look into the possibility of covering all connections. Bed bites: No pictures nor medical report received. We have since sent photos to Sykes showing no sign of any bugs. Bread Bin. In working order before check-in with cakes inside. The guest’s picture showed its broken state due to a loose nut. It has since been repaired. We can only deal with facts but not fabrications. This site has yet to enable the publishing of all the positive feedback penned in our guest book. Property Owner

  • "We enjoyed our stay the accommodation was well equipped and clean, I have two small faults , one was on arrival there was a dirty dish cloth and scoured left in the sink, also it is the only property that I have been to that hasn’t left dishwasher tablets."

Perhaps our preference but the pillows were rock hard

We are pleased that you have enjoyed your stay. It is a real shame that you did not find the new dish cloth , sponge. Also the various pillows of different degree of firmness in the drawers. We always tell our guests to ring us if they need anything and not wait until after they leave. Otherwise how could we do anything to help if we do not know what you need. Property Owner

This however was not a problem as the shops were only a short drive away. Very peaceful and a great place to stay

We try to make you feel welcome by providing freshly made scones/cake and toilet rolls and dishwasher tablets to start off your holiday. We take pride in our cottage but please be fair this is a self catering cottage and not a hotel. Property Owner

  • "Bathroom unusable due to extreme heat."

Radiator could not be turned off. Shower was inside bath, so inaccessible for us both as disabled people. We washed in the kitchen sink. Many problems getting TV to work. Table and chairs in small back garden adjacent to gas extractor fan making it impossible to sit outside. Floors creaky and noisy. Steps up into and out from property steep and with no hand rails, difficult to manage. External ground mix of gravel and irregular paving slabs made getting to and from the car very difficult. The cottage appeared from the published description to be cosy and ideal for our needs, but on arrival it was apparent that the owner was not fully conversant with how things worked and had not properly prepared for our arrival. We were told, for instance, that radio was available throughout, but the owner could not explain how it worked, so we did not use it. We kept the central heating switched on throughout, as it was unclear how it could be turned on again if we turned it off. The thermostats in every room were difficult to regulate, so were either boiled alive or had no warmth at all. There was scant guidance provided on most things in the folder provided. There was very little storage space for our dry groceries, so they were mostly left on tables and work surfaces. We never went upstairs ourselves, but we gather from a friend who did so, that it was like an oven with no windows and the sun burning through the roof light. The cottage was well equipped and decorated, but more attention should have been given to detail and thought given to the overall holiday experience. When we hire a cottage, we expect not to have to keep asking for help and for the owner to have got everything working so that our holiday experience is stress free and without complication. The location was ideal for us, but I'm afraid we would neither wish to use the cottage again or recommend it to friends.
