"A great location."
Springfield was lovely traditional cottage. Very quirky and spacious. Comfy beds. Easy on road parking and very friendly and nice local places to visit. Eskdale and Downe Arms served excellent food and service. The addition of some shower toiletries and a little more attention paid to more thorough cleaning to some areas would have made a difference, especially the oven, to our holiday experience. The fridge/freezer had a small leak. The vinyl kitchen flooring was damaged in places and not even due to the old tiles below which is not ideal for the elderly/ unsteady. A kick-board below the dishwasher was loose and the Velux in the single room stopped working and wouldn’t close (battery issue?). The welcome pack was a nice touch with wine, biscuits etc but the milk was off. All bathrooms were spacious and modern. There was everything you would need such as games, dvds, ironing board etc to make guests comfortable. The cottage information was useful and very interesting. Great to have a nice outside sitting area.
Thanks to the feedback. We are working on it and will update soon.
30/07/2024 we have taken action to put right anything that needed doing, where necessary. Its important that we know about these things as the cottage is generally fully booked and there is little time to make amends on changeover days. Accidents do happen and we would like guests to let us know so that we can plan and not affect future guests. We would like to take this opportunity to remind future guests they have the support of Sykes, the housekeeping team and the owners before and during, as well as after your stay. Thanks Again, Chris Angela and the Clean Queens

"We had a lovely stay at Springfield Cottage."
The house was so much bigger than it seemed in the photos, yet really cosy, with lots of great touches. The welcoming pack was nice to receive and our children loved the house, which is a rare thing! It was really clean, the bedding and towels smelt lovely and the house had everything we needed. The location was brilliant too, with a train station just down the road, walks on the doorstep, and a friendly co-op down the road for groceries. We would definitely stay there again!
We really appreciate great feedback. It helps make all the hard work we and the Clean Queens do worthwhile. Keeping local businesses going is also important to us, the guys at the CoOp (and the pubs) are great.

We couldn't believe how big it was. Nice friendly village and good food at the Downe Arms down the road
Thanks for the great feedback, both local pubs are great to have and there are others just a pleasant walk away. No favouritism, we recommend you try them all of course!

"Overall we were very happy with everything the cottage provided."
A lovely village, friendly people, very clean accommodation and comfortable. just one negative and that was that I would have appreciated the use of an anti-slip mat in the shower. I did indicate this on the form I completed before I left so I guess that owners would have seen this. Keep up the good work …..Springfield Cottage is lovely.
Thanks for the great feedback. We got your message and a mat is now available.

"Whilst trying not to be too pedantic, the fact that the advertisement stated that there were 4 bathrooms was slightly misleading, there were actually 2 bathrooms , the en-suite had a toilet and sink and downstairs there was a toilet in the utility room."
Having stated this, it did not present a real problem for ourselves. Should we decide to visit this beautiful area again, I would not hesitate but try to book Springfield Cottage.
Great spot of the typo in the summary box. The Sykes owner support team are on to it straightaway and updating. Our property is lucky to have lots of photographs, together with the detailed description that we hope makes it easy to understand the unique features of Springfield. We are very pleased you like the cottage and the area, thanks Chris and Angela

"Absolutely stunning cottage in an amazing setting."
The house has been beautifully presented and had everything you needed. I particularly liked reading about it's history in the information pack. The only recommendations I would give is to have a mirror in the attic bedrooms and have another set of keys. We stayed as a group of 5 adults and another key would of been useful. Other than that cannot fault anything.
Thanks for the amazing feedback, it helps us keep on going and trying to improve. We like your suggestions. We need to check if there isn't already a second key and will confirm/clarify . We tried to order a child safe mirror for the attic bedrooms, but it kept being delivered broken. We have had a better idea and we are working on it - another unique feature for the cottage, if it works.
15/05/2024 To confirm there are 2 keys available. We have placed a temporary mirror in the attic rooms while we sort out our ideas

"Lovely place to stay."
Clean and homely. Well equipped. Love how the property is modern equipped but has the old feel to it still. Parking is a little bit of a problem especially being next to a school. But if you time your coming and goings then you can work around it. Not so ideal for dogs but we also managed that. The village is nice with its own pubs and a convenient shop. Easy travel to the North Yorkshire coast. Or walking up on the moors. Yes we would stay again. Lovely welcome pack. Many thanks for a lovely stay.
Thank you for the great and useful feedback. We are pleased you had a lovely stay. It is also pleasing to us that you appreciated our efforts to keep the look and feel of the cottage, in the work we and previous custodians have put into it. Regarding dog friendliness, from experience, we no longer allow dogs to be unsupervised in the patio garden, however there is a public footpath to the countryside straight across the road. We find the school very quiet, even in term time but also enjoy the occasional choir practice from the little ones at the end of term!

"Fantastic stay enjoyed by all the guests."
Everything needed was on hand and the only suggestion I could make would be to put a small mirror in each of the attic floor bedrooms. The cottage, village and its location was amazing with easy access to all major attractions. I would totally recommend to family and friends. Thank you
Many thanks for the great feedback and suggestion, we will certainly do something. Our current 'project' is restoring a full length mirror. We will look for something fitting for the attic rooms.

"During our weeks stay we were unable to sit out on terrace because of strong smell and flies from bins."
Feel you need to include a warning regarding the steepness and narrowness of the stair treads up to the second floor. Needs hanging space in 2nd double bedroom as being in our late seventies we found it very difficult and dangerous having to climb up to the second floor to get our clothes. We also feel that 13,5 duvets are much too thick for the summer months.
Thank You for your feedback, we apologise for the issue with the bins which has never occurred before. The bins are monitored and emptied weekly. We understand some waste was placed unbagged in the general waste bin.
Feedback is also a great opportunity for us. After much consideration, we think that if we had been aware of the issues at the time, we could have done something to resolve them quickly and effectively. We are taking actions to reduce the risk of a recurrence.
We carefully follow the guidance of Sykes cottages and our information pack also contains lots of information on how to ensure an enjoyable stay at Springfield.
We would like to take this opportunity to remind future guests they have the support of Sykes, the housekeeping team and the owners before, during and after your stay.

Absolutely loved everything about the cottage, the flagstone floor, the stable door to the patio with a lovely view of the hills, the wood burning fires.. clean and modern bathrooms. A very thoughtful welcome basket of goodies on our arrival was a lovely touch. Just a short walk to the friendly local pub where they welcomed us to their Thursday quiz night.. great fun! Would DEFINITELY recommend 100%. Gina.

So clean, plenty of kitchen items to use, comfy beds and extremely cosy.
Its been beautifully restored and upto a high standard.
The owners had thought of every little detail, the information book was really helpful. The welcome wine and ice in the freezer was a lovely touch.
We felt right at home and so did our dog.
Great feedback thank you. We hope to make it even better, but still keep the cottage that little bit quirky by maintaining its mixed heritage over 150yrs+

"The property was ideally situated in a beautiful village surrounded by the most awesome views."
It was in easy reach of the coast and other York moors attractions. The cottage itself was very comfortable and had all the amenities you need. Only 2 points to mention. The dining room table was a little small to accommodate 6 people and the oven needed a good clean. Otherwise it was a beautiful cottage. Warm, cosy and well appointed. I would definitely go back again. Thank you
Thank you for the lovely feedback, really pleased you enjoyed your stay, you have described exactly why we love Castleton. Sorry to hear you felt the dining table was a little small, it is designed for 6 adults. We are learning quickly about letting and your feedback is useful to us. It has been a very busy season and the cottage has been full throughout. We were surprised at how much the oven has been used and it has finally had another clean.

"Can't fault the home or the location at all, the cottage was very nice to stay in for the week."
There was lots of space for all 6 of us to comfortably enjoy the space, relax in the evening together after a long walk and to all eat together. The kitchen was well stocked and I appreciated the leaflets and infomation that was waiting for us along with the welcome basket. The bathrooms and all areas were lovely and clean and the house felt cosy. The location of the property also meant you really don't have to drive far to get to beaches, walks and all the areas we wanted to visit which made the holiday much more enjoyable.
However, what let it down for us was that we were unaware it was a shared garden and that the neighbour is afraid of dogs. We spoke with the neighbour and had an agreement but meant we didn't use the garden. We would have preferred to have allowed our dog to have enjoyed the space freely with us.
Also, we were charged for additional cleaning services after, which I feel could have been included in the cost as standard. Given this house is a bargain for what you get I wouldn't have minded and would have saved hassle and being left a sour taste in the mouth after such a good holiday.
I suspect the latter, is more to do with how Sykes opperates so personally wont be using them again but would recommend the property itself.
Thank you for the feedback, we are glad you like the cottage and the area. The additional cleaning costs, were extraordinary, and this is the first time we have needed to charge, it was an owner decision not Sykes Cottages.
A feedback form and contact details are provided so that if we are aware, we can deal promptly with accidental breakages, minor damage etc. In this case the cleaners were left in a difficult situation with limited time to make the cottage ready for the next guests.
They took the necessary action. We had follow up actions. Unfortunately there was an impact on the next guests.
We allow one well behaved pet and we thank you for controlling your dog following the incident with a guest of our neighbour, who we understand made you aware of the joint access arrangements (it is not a shared garden) that is a feature of many cottages in North Yorkshire. Our neighbours are happy that we allow dogs and have given us some good ideas for how to manage this better going forward.
Thank you again for the learning opportunity. We will be making some small changes to make our guests stay even better next season.
