The enormous kitchen, comfy seating and large dining area makes family time easy. Good bedrooms for a great nights sleep. Short (downhill) walk to pubs / cafes and on to the sea.

  • "We celebrated my 50th Birthday at Bethel Chapel."

From the moment I saw it I had to book it. What an amazing place. So much history and character. It was fantastic to get the keys and explore the property. We were all so enchanted! Bright, airy and open plan, perfect for spending time together. The Chapel is exceptionally well appointed with all that you need and more! Great bathrooms and seemingly brand new bedding and towels too. Loved the art collection, pottery, books and music. So much more than a ‘holiday rental’ it feels like a true loved and lived in holiday home. I can’t wait to be back. ❤️

Thank you so much for your feedback and happy birthday! We are thrilled that you loved Bethel as much as we do and look forward to hosting you again in future. Lynn and Kevin Property Owner

  • "We had a 4-night stay at Bethel Chapel."

Members of 3 families who have stayed at several other Staithes properties before - and we were really impressed with Bethel Chapel. The building itself is so interesting architecturally, and it is furnished and accessorised really well. We booked very last minute and had read some reveiws saying cleanliness was an issue but this was definitely not the case in our experience - in fact we were looking out for this aspect and were very pleased with the standard. It's just at the bottom of the hill into Staithes, so very accessible for getting into and out of town. There's room for a medium-sized car on the front which is a huge bonus. All the beds were really comfortable. The property has oodles of internal space, so if you are a larger family or sharing with friends it ticks the boxes of great social space as well as being able to get some alone-time if you need it. Has views across the beck from the large chapel windows. We would definitely come back to Bethel Chapel.

Thank you for your lovely review. We are so pleased you had a good time and enjoyed Bethel :) Property Owner

  • "Bethel Chapel is a really beautiful property and Staithes is an amazing location, but the property is let down by it's general cleanliness and state of repair."

Carpets, rugs and cushions were stained, one toilet leaked, one shower door was broken and everywhere was covered in a layer of grime. The kitchen cupboards were all rammed with more pans etc than you could ever need (and a lot of general rubbish) but we never did find a pan that matched a lid and we had to wash everything before we used it. If you can get over the cleanliness, or lack of it, then this will be a great stay, but I didnt go on holiday to spend most of my time cleaning.

Thanks for the staying at Bethel. We are really sorry to hear about your experience. We normally text guests during their stay to check things are ok but weren’t able to as I think perhaps the booking was through a third party site but am looking into this with Sykes. We visited the property on the day you left and did note dust on skirting boards and cobwebs in some of the bathrooms although the kitchen area appeared clean. I also discovered the dripping toilet cistern which has now been fixed and the seal refitted on the shower door. I had already been in touch with our cleaner following another recent comment despite a deep clean and have since been assured that all areas have now been properly cleaned. Being a concerted chapel, the size and layout of Bethel does make it challenging to keep spotlessly clean throughout but we will keep trying and are grateful for the feedback. We are also in the process of also replacing all of the bedding and towels and will keep things under regular review. Property Owner

  • "The property is beautiful and the location is great but it’s very grubby and tired inside and given that it felt over priced."

Loads of little touches were missing that would have made the stay much easier and felt more welcoming, things like washing up liquid and a washing up brush, or a couple of extra loo rolls. Tbh I would have preferred things like that to the rolls and bacon that they did leave as a welcome pack. There was nothing like salt or oil, so if you stay here take absolutely everything you need, but loads of empty and dusty/dirty old clutter eg old empty oil bottles etc. I don’t mind that so much if the let is a family’s holiday home, but it was just so grubby. I saw from a previous review that the property has allegedly been deep cleaned recently, but it doesn’t feel that way at all and the thick dust and muck on loads of the pots would suggest otherwise too. Decor is tired, paint peeling etc, the bathrooms smelled funky. There’s absolutely nothing luxurious to make you feel welcome, but the building itself is lovely.

Thank you for staying with us and for your feedback which we were really sorry to hear. We always want to improve our guests experience; I normally send a text during guests’ stay to check all is ok but was away that weekend so didn’t manage to. The cleaning company did undertake a deep clean at the end of April so we will definitely pass on this feedback and request further cleaning and also contact you directly to confirm which areas weren’t clean and also regarding the smell you noticed in the bathroom which we will investigate. The only defence in terms of cleanliness is the very high ceiling in the central area make it hard to reach some of the roof cobwebs. We were already considering changng the welcome pack and will take your comments into account. The toilet rolls are replenished at every changeover so we will also investigate why there weren’t enough for your stay. Thanks again for taking the time to feedback and we hope you will choose to stay at Bethel again in future. Property Owner

  • "The property was fabulous, spacious and well located."

Rooms and beds were comfortable. Kitchen well equipped but needed some basic necessities such as washing up liquid, tin foil, coffee, tea, salt (salt all gone) and some logs for the burner to make the stay easier. Bathrooms were a little smelly (drains I think) but clean enough. The house felt like it needed some TLC and a proper clean (bit dusty and cobwebs in places) but it didn't spoil our stay at all. We loved the big open space for entertaining, the music system was a bonus and we didn't touch the TV all weekend. We would recommend to friends and will be coming back to Staithes again soon.

Thanks for staying with us and for your helpful feedback. Since you stayed there has been a deep clean in addition to usual weekly one. We also try to ensure a starter pack of logs and there is usually washing up liquid, tea etc but will check with the cleaning team to make sure. Property Owner

  • "It was very nice stay the chapel is lovely and we will be back."

Only problem was the neighbours over the road parking Thier car outside the chapel so we could not park there and had to pay £6 a day in the car park at the top of the hill. Apparently the neighbours over the road do this all the time. Which should not be allowed when you have guests staying in the chapel who should be able to park there for free. Apart from that it was a very happy pleasant stay thank you

Thank you for staying at Bethel; we’re really glad you enjoyed it. Thank you for the feedback too. Really sorry to hear you had a problem with parking. The space is usually free but will look into that. If it ever happens on future stays please pop a note on the windscreen of the car (that’s parked there) asking them do move and also contact us on the number in the folder. • "Really beautiful & unique place for a large group to stay in Staithes."

The kitchen is large & well stocked, so ideal if you're travelling with little kids & won't be able to eat out much. As a converted Chapel it's very roomy & the woodwork is really attractive. The only thing that dissapointed was the windows & shutters: none of the sash & case windows in the bedrooms opened (nailed / painted shut?) and no fans were provided, so it got uncomfortably hot overnight; and the shutters aren't large enough to cover the arched top of the Chapel windows, so the bedrooms were very bright from 5am onwards. Replacing the shutters or installing valances would help, as would fixing the windows. Overall though it was a beautiful, very comfortable & spacious property in an ideal location. Also appreciated all the beach stuff for kids. Definitely recommended.

Thank you for staying at Bethel and for your feedback. Glad you had a good time. Really sorry about the windows - we’ve just had them repainted on the outside - they normally open easily but must have been painted shut! Will get that sorted asap. Property Owner

  • "Beautiful property in a good position within the village."

Excellent accomodation and facilities with a very nice sociable main living area, excellent kitchen, nice woodburner and views out over the beck. The bedrooms were very comforable. We were a party of eight and the chapel was the perfect size for all. Parking is a bit challenging in the village, with there being one spot at the property, on the pavement out front. This was tight but big enough to accomodate an SUV. Additional parking is available at the top of the village - one reasonable but small council run car park and a more expensive private one. Arrive early to get the former. You can pay for multiple days, which saves having to make return trips to the car park. It is a short walk from the chapel down the high street to the village shops and the front, where there is an excellent pub. The Staithes museum is right next to Bethel Chapel and is well worth visiting. They have a number of excellent pieces related to celebrated local artist Laura Knight. There is a good Coop at the top of the village for provisions. We very much enjoyed our stay in Staithes and can recommend Bethel Chapel for anyone who needs larger holiday accomodation!

  • "There were quite a few cobwebs round the property!"

We aren't too picky but others might be. Towels were very small and felt a bit mean. Biggest thing was logs it advertised as fuel provided then it wasn't so we had to spend time and money finding them and buying them. We did love the property though and it is perfect for a big group of grownups! We will book again. Loved the array of art and the books available. Lots of homely touches

Thanks for your feedback and for staying at Bethel. Sorry about the cobwebs - was it in a particular part of the building? Unfortunately due to the height of the main room it is tricky to get to all of them but we will keep trying! Also sorry to hear about the logs - currently we don’t include logs in our welcome pack (cake, wine etc ) but we will look into options for this; until your review we hadn’t realised the Sykes website said logs were provided but we will check with them. Hope you found logs ok - there are several places in the lower part of the village that sell reasonably priced packs. Best wishes Kevin and Lynn Property Owner

  • "I went with my family for a relaxing break and it ticked all the boxes."

Great property, with lots of fun things to do if you like adventures. What really surprised me was all the history surrounding the Bethel. I would recommend a visit to the museum across the road and you'll realise why it's so special!! The locals are all really nice and the property itself is well located. I had a lengthy chat in the pub with a few of the locals and learnt a lot about Bethel. I just had such a fantastic week. Comfy beds, great area for conversing and the fact there are two bedrooms on the ground floor was great for my disabled mother. As was the parking just outside. The property has the most amazing fire too and just had everything we could ever have wanted from a self catering property. Even the fact there is a separate lounge was nice if you wanted to get away and watch tv. I loved that some thought had been taken to put games aside, make sure there were instructions etc, and it really is just a place that feels like a home away from home. I would say there is a lot of history and some great fossil hunts around the area and the restaurants (I ate at all of them) were well priced and decent quality. Everyone was really nice in the shops and I loved that. Its hard to get a place that ticks all the boxes...and I don't think the pictures do it justice. It's an absolute stunning property when you first walk in. Oh, If you want some nice walks this is a great base and it is a well positioned property for most of the coastal stuff in Yorkshire (and this is my fifth time going). I could go on and on, but I think regardless of the time of year this is a fantastic place to visit.

About the location

STAITHES

Whitby 10 miles.

The charming and sleepy seaside village of Staithes, with its cobbled streets and back alleys, is something of an artist’s dream. Its pretty houses and cottages are clustered around the old harbour and surrounded by high craggy cliffs on three sides, with a sheltered sandy beach set amongst the rocky coastline. The village can claim connections with Captain Cook who was apprenticed to a draper near the harbour. Nowadays, Staithes is a must for anyone visiting the Yorkshire Coast and has a good selection of pubs, shops and tea rooms. Staithes is still home to an RNLI lifeboat station and a small fleet of cobles (fishing boats) landing fish, crab and lobster, with boat trips for birdwatching, fishing and even whale watching available. It’s also the location of the popular BBC children’s TV series, Old Jack’s Boat. Staithes has a strong attraction for artists, with an annual Art and Heritage Festival, galleries and artists studios with art courses and workshops regularly on offer. There’s a free Illusion Trail, which guides visitors around the network of ginnels (alleyways), with trail guides available locally. The best views of the town can be enjoyed from the Cleveland Way which runs down the cliff to the sea’s edge. Altogether a superb base for exploring the Yorkshire Coast, visiting the larger resorts of Whitby or Scarborough and enjoying the moorland villages of the North York Moors National Park.
