"Lovely little, quirky fisherman's cottage, with good facilities particularly both bathrooms."
It had everything we needed and more. Great location for walking the dramatic coastline, lovely village with 2 good pubs!
Thanks for your review and custom, David. So glad you enjoyed Ships Bell and the beautiful village.

"This is the feedback that I left on a note at the property."
I did advise Sykes of some of these issues via the booking app but did not receive a response (and still have not). I could not phone due to lack of phone signal but the message facility should have been enough.
*No logs/kindling even though stated included in price in the particulars *handle very loose on frying pan *no spare bin bags or kitchen roll *heating goes off regularly so has to be re-set and you cannot have heating and oven on at same time *upstairs shower drips from hand-held shower part *toilet roll holder in downstairs bathroom is very rusty *bird poo in the single bedroom at the top and on banister *sink in the kitchen is impossible to keep clean and frustrating to use/wooden worktops constantly wet and look awful *upstairs bathroom vent is very noisy when windy *even though there are two front doors the wind comes through them and creates a draft which is on your neck when sitting on the sofa *table lamp in the living room didn't work

"I really enjoyed my stay at Ships Bell, I can't recommend it highly enough."
The location is ideal, just tucked away off the main street in easy reach of everything. I was a little bit concerned about safety returning to the accommodation at night but that's because I live in London and not Staithes. It was absolutely fine! The accommodation itself was spotless. I usually wash plates, glasses, mugs, cutlery etc before using them when I rent a place but there was no need. The bed (on the first floor) was amazingly comfortable with beautiful soft linen. I didn't use the shower in the first floor bathroom but the one on the ground floor was amazing. Not only did it have great water pressure but it was double headed too, such luxury! The kitchen ceiling was low but I'm 5'10" and could stand upright inbetween the rafters. That's what you get in old properties like this, so no point moaning about it! I wish I could have stayed longer and would not hesitate to stay at Ships Bell again.
Hi Adam. Thanks for booking Ships Bell and thank you for such wonderful, honest feedback. So pleased you enjoyed the charm of the village and cottage.

"We loved our stay at Ships Bell, beautiful cottage, well maintained, very clean, everything you need was provided."
Our little family thoroughly enjoyed our stay, close to the few shops and pubs, made use of the board games in an evening of which there's quite a few to keep you occupied! We made some beautiful memories there and hope to go back again.

"Lovely well presented cottage."
Clearly a lot of money has been spent rennovating. Kitchen, being in the basement, is a little too dark maybe would benefit from some additional lighting - perhaps some unobtrusive under cupboard strips ? Bedrooms are comfortable. Bathrooms are absolutely fabulous.
Top tip - the evening before check out - bring your car down to the high street - load up in the morning and move it by 9am. The 40 min spaces are very busy in the mornings. When we were leaving - there were no spaces left - so I had 3 trips up the hill carrying all our stuff..exhausting ...but great exercise !
Enjoyed our visit to Staithes which is a great place to base yourself for exploring the Cleveland coast. Some lovely beaches close by for long dog walks.
Thanks Anjela for your booking and the honest feedback. I love the idea of under cupboard lights - not sure how I haven’t thought of this yet - thanks so much for the suggestion!
Hope you will book again in the future.

"Bedrooms where comfortable and upstairs bathroom is very well maintained however the kitchen and living room are a little run down and could benefit from a little TLC."
The property has just been decorated and matches the photos on here perfectly. In what way is it possibly run down? If you were expecting new build style rooms then you won’t get that in an 1800’s character property.

"Quaint old building with lots of character but with all the modern facilities."
Perfectly placed for the beach, pubs and cafés. Good communication with the cottage owner who was very helpful.
We had a lovely holiday in Staithes which is a perfect place for a quiet break.
Thanks Steven, your feedback is much appreciated. Look forward to having you book again.

"Firstly I would like to say what a beautiful spacious cottage this is
Nestled in a very quiet alley close the the Beck
It really has been tastefully decorated and equipped
The large basement kitchen is well kitted out, and the bathroom and shower room are beautifully designed too The downstairs wet room shower is utter luxury
The main bedroom is very cosy and has the most comfortable bed
The bedrooms on the top floor are very bright and inviting
There are plenty of board games to keep children (and adults) entertained on rainy days
SADLY We got the impression this holiday let is being run on a meagre or tight budget!"
There are some maintenance issues that must require IMMEDIATE attention!! (if it were the odd one) we would have ignored it and just left a note for the Owners
However, for the amount of money we paid for a weeks stay we feel it must be pointed out for others!
1) BEWARE There is no parking permit This should be highlighted on Sykes page Having holidayed in Staithes for a few years now, no parking permit for a holiday cottage was a first for us! The cost for a weeks parking is £50 So you need to add this to your holiday expenses
WELCOME PACK consisted of........... a bottle of milk! Never in all the holiday cottages we have stayed in, have we ever been met with such a pitiful welcome pack! (another first for us!)
THIS COTTAGE IS IN DESPERATE NEED OF A LITTLE MAINTENANCE
Kitchen tap (when you can get it to work!) is a nightmare to use, shooting water all over the wooden worktop, floor and user
(read others reviews on this subject)
Dimly lit kitchen so very difficult to
to see when preparing and cooking food Even fridge had no working light Thank goodness for phone torches
Bearing in mind it sleeps 5 There was just one tea towel supplied!
The front door has a Yale type lock as well as the original old mortice lock (key supplied) On first night hubby also locked the mortice, only to find we could not unlock it without spending a very long time jiggling the key about before it finally unlocked! If the property was on fire this could be fatal for its occupants! Suggest this lock is repaired/replaced asap or just not give that key out as it really is not needed!
The heavy brass door knob to ground floor wetroom/wc comes off in your hand or crashes to the floor, hopefully not landing on your foot!
First floor bathroom
How gorgeous it is apart from the basin uni tap Which swivels and wobbles helplessly about as you attempt to turn the taps on and off!
Various door catches don't work properly, so doors stay ajar!
IF THESE ISSUES WERE DEALT WITH IT WOULD BE A 10 PLUS STAR RATING!
Hi. Thanks for the feedback. Unfortuantely, as I mentioned when you text me, the council have not issued us a parking permit and it's something I am still working on.
I've just come back from the property myself and the kitchen tap is now changed. The fob you had for the keys unfortunately did not have the mortice key removed. We take fire saftey extremely seriously, hence the extinguishers, blankets and alram system that runs throughout the property.
Regarding the welcome pack - there is tea, coffee, sugar and cleaning supplies in the kitchen so I'm not sure what was missing?
We don't run the cottage on a tight budget - far from it - and I beleive that shows in the standard of the property. Ultimately, it's an 1800's traditional cottage which we have renovated to a very high and modern standard whilst trying to retain as many of the original features as possible - door knobs included.
Thanks again for raising your points and hopefully you can visit again.

"If you require solely a roof over your head, very limited hot water (3 people and a child washed once, even after following the heating manual), no cleaning supplies, no sugar and milk, no TV (other than Internet via) and left over toilet tissue (which wasn't alot!"
). The kitchen tap is terrible and permanently leaked, the wooden kitchen side shows signs with rotting wood below said tap.
After a very long journey and the price paid, compared to other stays, we all were less than disheartened upon arrival, to attend the convenience store for the most basic of items.
The best bed in the house was the main bedroom on the second floor, mattress wise. The single and double on the third floor mattresses where pumped up with a duvet cover under the fitted sheets, so not a comfy stay.
I think the home owner needs to do some much needed maintenance, kitchen tap, lights in the living room, bathroom taps which swing round, hot water, TV and proper mattresses.
We tried to source another house via Sykes Cottages, however was permanently engaged, so be warned because they will not help you.
Staithes is a 10/10 , however will book somewhere else in the future.
Glad to be back home, however miss the gorgeous Staithes already.
Gosh, you make the property sound dreadful. I'm not sure you will find many properties to the standard that we renovated ours to.
I've spent 4 days in the property this week with 3 other adults. All showered twice a day plus washing up etc and we didn't get close to using all of the hot water.
All beds and mattresses are new and the 'duvet under the sheets' you refer to are hypoallergenic mattress protectors...
I tried to swing the taps around during my stay but could only move them 2 inches as whilst hey had come loose, there was a wall that stopped them going any further.
Regarding not being able to reach Sykes to book another house...... well let's just say that in all my time of dealing with Sykes I've never not gotten an answer.

"We enjoyed our stay at Ships Bell and the lovely village of Staithes."
There had been an issue with the heating in the week before our stay and communication from the owner was very good with regard to minimising disruption of our stay when an electrician had to attend, and even arranging delivery of a fan heater in case we were cold before the issue could be resolved. It would have been nice to have a bit more information about using the heating system as we found it to be on for longer than we needed and warmer too
The details do state that the kitchen is low-ceilinged but it is really low - my husband who is only 5’8” had to duck under the beams there so anyone taller would struggle. More of an issue for me though was the lack of light in the kitchen, difficult to see for cutting, cooking and into the back of the cupboards to find things. A few items that would make self-catering easier - a grater, a sieve, wooden spoon or spatula. There was no teapot, and although there was a nespresso coffee machine there were no pods to start us off, only instant coffee. We couldn’t use the ground coffee we had brought with us as there was no cafetière either. We did find a mouldy wine glass in the cupboard unfortunately
On a positive note the bed was large and comfortable and the bathroom shower was great (didn’t use the downstairs one) and we did enjoy our stay
Hi Susan, thanks for your booking at Ships Bell. We are slightly disappointed with the feedback as we strive for excellence. Regarding the digital thermostat - not sure what other instructions we can provide as it’s a timed system with the ability to increase or decrease the temperature as you wish.
The kitchen is low beamed as you would expect in an 1800’s traditional fisherman’s cottage. That said, I’m 6’2” and I duck under the beams without issue. I’m not sure it’s entirely fair to suggest anyone over 5’8 would struggle…
I’ll replace the items that are missing from the kitchen and ensure that Sykes inform guests that we provide a Nespresso coffee machine.

"This is a fabulous cottage."
It is just off the main road into Staithes. The cottage has high ceilings in bedroom and bathroom but very low in the kitchen, tall people struggle in this part of the property. The cottage has two bathrooms which are separate on floors. The cottage is opposite the Chapel Street Stores which is handy for sweets and toys. The cottage was very clean and ready for us to move in for the week. It had a slow cokker, hob and oven and a dishwasher in the kitchen. The bedrooms had plebty of storrage for clothes. The bathrooms very clean and easy to use showers. The cottage is very close to the sea, when you come out of the cottage, down the path to the left you can see the river joining on to the sea. Staithes is a really beautiful village, you can spent your time watching the sea, waiting for the sea to go out to do fossile hunting, but be careful as the tide turns and comes in quick. Always best to get a tide timetable from the RNLI for a £1 to be safe before entry on to the rocks.
