  • "We had a lovely long weekend, the cottage had everything we needed, loads of space for 7 of us including 2 kids."

Alan welcomed us and checked in (we didn't have the best weather). The only thing I would say which didn't affect our stay but could for others, the stairs are quite creaky so sneaking up/down in the night is very difficult. However any minor negative can be made up by the incredible view over Robin Hoods Bay. We will likely return.

hi Sophie I am glad you enjoyed your stay with us, we have had a joiner look at the stairs and short of replacing them there was nothing he could do, we are a very old modernised property, we have lived here for 25 years and still admire that view, I hope to see you again and hope the weather is better Alan Property Owner

  • "The property is ideally situated to visit many attractions."

We visited NYM railway,Whitby several times,Robin Hoods bay,Boggle Hole and Scarborough. The owners are friendly without being intrusive and the cottage has everything for a family night in if you so desire. Allan apologised for the lane but we could see when it rained heavily that the stone kept being washed away and that is an ongoing project. All in all we had a great holiday and in words of Arnie I’ll be back. Seriously we have booked again.

  • "Our stay at Dovecote was lovely."

However, we do feel that it would benefit from some constructive criticism: The overall cleanliness behind curtains, corners of rooms, etc were cobwells. The quality of the beds was poor. It gives the impression of a rustic style cottage but done on the cheap. The sofas desperately need replacing for comfort and aesthetics. The stairs need maintenance desparately. As it is a large property, you would assume that children would be staying and as we have previously experienced in other rentals, board games, books and DVDs have been available. Knowing the Yorkshire weather, sometimes days are needed to be home based and these would have been a great benefit. Also, the weather required us to go and buy clothes horses to dry our washing. A fifty pound expense where these have been part of the accommodation from Sykes. It may be useful for Sykes to give the owners a bit more feedback so that similar services are offered at all their properties. Also a welcome pack would be great. Other accommodation have provided these. e.g. milk, bread, eggs, biscuits, tea and coffee. It is a small expense to provide a warming impact on customers. A few small changes could encourage people to return year after year, rather than just once. The landlord and his wife are lovely. There is a fantastic play area for the children and the scenery is idyllic. A very well equipped kitchen.

hi Roy surprised you found the beds uncomfortable, We have just replaced all mattresses with good quality British mattresses, and are getting good reports, we removed games and books during corvid, Most children bring their own game consoles, rare we leave the farm so difficult to get fresh products ready for changeovers days, stairs have been inspected by a joiner and although a bit bounce its fine to use, will tell cleaners to be a bit more attentive to corners and behind curtains, my wife does try and keep the cottages clean, but with 5 cottages and only 5 hours not always possible, assume everything else was clean We do our best and can't please everybody, but looking at the review below some people are happy, and we get many repeat bookings, some have been coming for years Property Owner

  • "Nice cottage with spectacular views only problems are as previous visitors have said is that the beds are uncomfortable, the taps need replacing as they are hard to turn on/off & seating could do with an upgrade also be careful when going upstairs as the two top treads feel they might give way all of these problems can be easily sorted with a bit of general maintenance, other than a bit of redecorating the cottage would be great we would certainly recommend it."

Hi Gordon mattresses changed this week ( in all cottages), and taps replaced those stairs have always been a bit bouncy , have had a joiner look at them and he said they where ok apart from these minor faults, we hope you enjoyed your stay and if you ever return may be able to give us a higher score Property Owner

  • "Lovely property with a great view of the bay."

Couple of minor gripes the tap’s need attention and we could not get the downstairs bedroom warm. I appreciate it was only April. We had a good week and would book again in the future.

hi Glen glad you enjoyed your stay with us, sorry for the few minor problems, we have had a plumber look at those taps, and now I think the only thing to do is replace them completely TAPS CHANGED .lower bedroom is always a little colder it's lower than rest of house and heat rises will see if we can fit a bigger radiator, mind you in summer we don't have that problem, hope to see you again Alan & June, Property Owner

  • "We had a lovely stay at Dovecote Cottage during half term."

There were five Adults and three Children and it still felt spacious. The owners were friendly and told us about the area. There were lovely walks along the Cinder path in to Robin Hoods Bay, it was perfect. There is a play area at the side of the cottage ,which the children loved. The dogs loved the walks and there was so much to explore. I would recommend this Cottage and cannot wait to return. Julie and Arnold and Family

  • "This could be an amazing cottage."

Sadly though it was let down by the dust and cobwebs. I appreciate it is a very old property but a lot of the cobwebs had been there for some time and I had to remove large spiders from children's bedrooms several times in the night. There was no cleaning products so we had to buy our own, and the hoover makes all the right noises but doesn't pick a lot up. It would also have been nice if there had been more toilet rolls than one per bathroom. The views from the cottage were second to none and the owners were very nice. It was just let down by cleanliness.

Sorry you found fault with our cottage, we do pride ourselves on keeping it clean, every pot and pan goes through the dishwasher before you arrive, as far as spiders go hard to catch them, cobwebs form overnight, please let us know where you found the dust ,as far as toilet rolls go, we are a self-catering business and only provide the basics, had you told us about the Dyson we would have been more than happy to fix this for you., we don't deserve such a low score mainly due to a few spiders, how you found everything else clean Property Owner

  • "This was potentially a beautiful cottage with spectacular views but it was let down by the standard of furnishings and the plumbing issues."

The property was quite tired and would benefit from new carpets, sofas and mattresses. One of the single mattresses was so worn and thin that I could feel the bed beneath when I sat on it. The downstairs taps were really difficult to turn on and off and would gush and then drip until they were fully tightened, which took some force. The en-suite toilet randomly continued to run even when the cistern was full. The fridge light flashes rapidly which is quite annoying. The couple in charge of the property are very nice and helpful and there is a lovely children's play area attached to the cottages. The heating is very responsive and gives lots of hot water, it's a pity the taps let it down! In the end we left the cottage two days early because my wife didn't find it welcoming. Given the price we paid for a weeks stay I don't think this was value for money at all.
