"Lovely cottage, in a beautiful location."
We love walking with our dog so this was an absolutely perfect location. We loved walking to Stoodley Pike, hardcastle craggs and along the canal. We only used the car a couple of times during our stay. Weather was changeable but we had waterproofs.
So glad you enjoyed your stay. Thank you for leaving the cottage impeccable - it is so much appreciated when guests do this.

"This has been our fifth visit to the cottage, it’s a perfect location for visiting friends and family but also enjoy a short break in the beautiful countryside of Calderdale."
Over our five visits we have always found the owners to be lovely and accommodating, we appreciate their quick response when and if an issue arose, for example the previous tenants didn’t let them know there was no hot water. This wasn’t really an issue for us per se as we had an electric shower & dishwasher to utilise, but felt it was the right thing to do to let them know - it was sorted immediately.
I cannot recommend this cottage enough, it’s situated in stunning surroundings and each window gives you a view to die for. Thank you for sharing it with us. Jon & Sue
Thank you for this lovely feedback and for being so understanding about the hot water situation. We love the cottage too so it is great that you appreciate it so much. 5 times ? Maybe you should move up here....

"Overall I enjoyed my stay."
The hill was unexpectedly steep and very narrow to drive up. Other than the electric shower, I didn’t have hot running water. I used the kettle to heat water for washing dishes and washing my hands/face in cold water was not terrible.
The place was chilly (there was a high of around 15°C most days). I switched the heating on but only felt any heat one time, and even then it was by touching the heater - I didn’t actually feel warm. The thermostats were set to 18°C which is well below standard “room temperature”. I kept a pullover on and used a blanket.
For the household waste and recycling there were no containers in the side alley so I had to leave them.
All that said, the location was very picturesque and, other than the hill was pretty convenient for Hebden Bridge and other places nearby. If you are planning to be out most of the day this could still be a good place to stay.
For future guests...If the heating element goes when you are staying please tell us and we can get it fixed - in this case our guest's inconvenience went on to effect our next guests as we only learned of the problem when they tried to use the hot water ! A new element is now in place and the hot water restored. This was indeed an unusually cold week for July: unfortunately we were away and our guest did not get in touch about the issue so we could not address it. Our current guests report that the heating has kicked in to their satisfaction when they have needed it. Please do tell us if there are any issues like this - everyone has different preferences and we will always try and accommodate them.

Very comfortable and the heating was a bonus as the weather wasn't particularly good at the beginning of the week.
If anything the large frying pan has seen better days but really couldn't fault our stay.
We are so pleased you enjoyed your stay and hope to welcome you back in the future.

"When you look at the photos, read the description and previous reviews it’s clearly as billed."
That’s why we went to this cottage and will again. We and our dog loved it. We met the farmers and their dogs. All very friendly. Nice eggs too!
It’s on the moor yet an easy drive to Hebden where the parking is laughably cheap. Very refreshing!
The cottage was so comfy and the heating is great. You’re never cold. We bought some kindling and wood just for the sake of a wood burner fire. It was very clean and well stocked.
We didn’t know that the washing machine was disconnected but it didn’t matter. We had, as usual packed for a month despite staying a week :)))
The garden was a great little space and we had lunch alfresco whilst playing ball with the dog…. Lovely llamas
It is so lovely that you enjoyed your stay, the cottage, the place. We especially appreciated that you texted us separately about the one or two improvements you feel we could make, which we will act on. Thank you.

"We left the property cleaner than when we arrived eg used tissue under the bed, toaster full of crumbs, ice cube tray mouldy."
In this terrain and the weather it was inconvenient to have the washing machine disabled (we were not notified of this and could have packed differently). The outer porch runs with water making it impossible to leave outdoor coats and boots in the dry. The window vac was unserviceable
We will pass this feedback on to our cleaner. For future guests: the property details state there is no washing machine provided so please do look at them - its tough to get a low score for something like this; we do not take responsibility for the weather or your packing; the outer porch is rough stone built - the water is condensation as the porch is unheated. If you keep the door from the sitting room to the porch closed it helps a very great deal. The stone porch has been there to protect from bad weather and hang wet clothes in for over 100 years. It is what it is. We will remove the window vac: it hasn't been used by guests for a long time - we do not use it when we stay.

Fantastic views all round and yes, there is a steep hill up from town but it takes 5 minutes to get into town by car.
Great walks directly from the cottage and a real 'home from home' feel. Excellent hosts.

"We enjoyed our stay at 1 Horsehold Cottages as it is perfectly placed just outside the bustling town of Hebden Bridge but in a quiet, idyllic location."
The lovely old cottage itself was clean and cosy, though it did get a bit cool in the evening (as the central heating had been turned off for the summer, the amazing log burner was the only source of heating). Good job we brought along a handy fan heater! The cottage could do with upgrading the crockery but everything else was great. Parking nose to tail was ok - one 4x4 and one ordinary hatchback fitted within the space. Walks all around were stunning. You're well on the way up to Stoodley Pike from here too. Great location. Lovely cottage. Would definitely stay again!
Thank you for this great feedback. We are so glad you enjoyed your stay and hope you will stay again. Not sure why the score is a borderline positive 81 ! The algorithm moves in mysterious ways sometimes.

"The views of Stoodley Pike and the rolling hills are what makes this cottage so special."
Yes there is a very steep hill to climb from Hebden Bridge (0.66 miles), but we knew that and it gives you a head start for your walk to Stoodley Pike! There are footpaths everywhere, right on your doorstep. We were very lucky with the weather, a week of sunshine but still a gentle breeze most of the time. The cottage, I am sure, feels very different in the midst of winter - but there’s a very big fire. It is equipped with everything you need and expect from a holiday home. There’s plenty of space for a car, or even two. The small back garden with a table and chairs on the decking is perfect for just relaxing. There is some renovation work going on in one of the neighbouring cottages (July 22) but it didn’t disturb us as we were out in the day time.

"It was not made clear on the cottage description that the garden could not be accessed directly from the cottage."
You had to go out of the front door, stepping directly onto the road and then go round the side of the property to access the garden.
It was also not made clear that the dog should be kept in the kitchen or in the car! It was sold as a dog friendly cottage and this is clearly not dog friendly.
The bin, which was kept by the front door has not been emptied and was not emptied on the Tuesday , which was the collection day shown in the property. I rang the owner as the bin was full and he came and removed a bag from the bin. This made some room but did not remove the flies which were around the old rubbish in the bin.
It was also not obvious that you stepped out of the front door directly onto the road. The road was not very busy but there was traffic on it at all times of the day and care needed to be taken.
This is for future bookers. Many dog owners stay quite happily, as do we. Dogs are allowed in ALL of the downstairs areas but we ask that they not go on the armchairs or sofas: a dog gate is provided so that dogs inclined to sleep on sofas can overnight in the kitchen - its use is entirely optional. We use it when we stay with our dog of course. If you find the prospect of going out of the front door and round the side to the ample garden problematic pray do not book: the photograph of the property clearly shows there is no direct door onto the garden area and prior feedback also refers to this. The road past the cottage meanders up to eventually a dead end on the moors - it is not busy but as with all roads there is some traffic some of the time, as it is after all a road and the cottage has to be accessed from somewhere. As with all roads care must indeed be taken, not least by the farm dogs who have a habit of sitting in the middle of it watching the world go by. Sadly the cottage does not have its own drive, though it's parking is off-road. We are sorry the council slipped up with the rubbish removal which they sometimes do unfortunately and we have complained to them: our handy man went straight up on request, as we were many miles away, to make room in the bin for this cottage (which was easily accomplished by putting a bag in a completely empty bin next to it). If you have read this far and read past feedback you will see this cottage is not for everyone. It is what it is and where it is. Hopefully dear reader this will help you and you will make a well informed decision as a result.

"We were grateful for the flexibility with the booking."
The location was a bit disappointing as it was harder to get to Hebden Bridge than we anticipated. Great views though.
We encourage guests to read the description and refer to previous reviews to establish if the cottage will be right for them. Guests who wish to be in Hebden Bridge please note that this cottage is on a hill just above it. Hence the views. It is a quick drive down to Hebden and back up, but the walk is steep.

"The property is cosy and always warm and inviting."
The kitchen is well stocked. My only negative comment is that the garden is around the back but to access it you go out the front door , which is straight onto the road. The local farmers dog made an appearance in the garden some mornings and was always hanging around and following my dog , which wasn't good for my reactive dog. The farmer just lets him I had to tell him to go away a few times. Think he came for a fight
Thank you for the feedback. We are glad you enjoyed the cottage and sorry your dog found the local farmers dog intrusive. This is for the information of future guests. The cottages are in a small hamlet. There are dogs who live at Horsehold and they are in our experience of good temperament and contribute to the charm of the place: our own dogs get on with them well. Many dog owners have stayed with no negative experiences reported.

"Had a wonderful time, beautiful spacious cottage and fabulous surroundings."
The very steep single track road was a bit heart in mouth, any meetings requiring plenty of reversing. Bed lovely, sheets very good quality. For utter perfection would have liked tourist information leaflets (which I got and left in cottage) a tea strainer for dealing with coffee/tea leaves, the notes were a bit disorganised, an index would be very useful, and a list of local dog walks. Very few tv channels available, not a problem. The walls very soundproof and the local building works did not intrude, neighbours could not hear our dog on the odd occasion it barked (!). The shower was lovely but a little slippery underfoot. Everything was supplied that we took i.e. loo paper washing up liquid etc, so we doubled up on that. But all in all I would thoroughly recommend the cottage, and the area. Fab.

"The cottage was as expected with fantastic views, cosy nooks to read a book or play a game, and with fantastic walks right on your doorstep."
The cottage was dog friendly, as was the general area. The house was generally very clean, but there were some items like pots and pans that previous visitors had used that hadn't been properly cleaned. There were roadworks on the road up to the property when we stayed, and we needed to work around these, as they made the house inaccessible. This was OK for us but would have been very difficult for anyone hoping to use the house as a base for driving to other parts of Yorkshire. These would really be my only very minor criticisms and me, my partner and my dog all had such a lovely time!
For general information we are informed the road works have now been completed.

Two pieces of feedback -
- the travel directions in the listing were inaccurate - they should have said turn LEFT at the Coop in Hebden Bridge. (This caused us to end up in an dead end and doing a difficult manoeuvre in the dark)
- we arrived very late and at that time the heating was not on which resulted in a cold welcome
