The local SPAR shop was close by as well as a good fish and chip shop. The Cottage itself was clean when we arrived with a very nice welcome basket. The kitchen and bathroom were of a very good quality and appeared to be a fairly recent installation. The beds were very comfortable. The heating worked very well and kept the cottage very cosy indeed, the week we were there was the first week that the temperatures had dropped this year with day time temperatures of 12- 14 and night time temperatures of 5. I would highly recommend this cottage and should we ever return to this part of Yorkshire would be happy to stay agin at Eskside.

  • "Lovely property, ideal location for visiting Whitby, Scarborough."

A bit like a tardis as a lot bigger than it looks from outside. Kitchen has everything you need. Bathroom is fabulous. Needs a bit of TLC in some areas. Enclosed garden was great for our dog. Hedges are really overgrown & garden would look a lot bigger if they were cut back. We were unable to make use of the patio table due to hedges encroaching. On arrival a bit dusty, hairs & crumbs under cushions on furniture which I hoovered & food left in freezer from previous occupants which I discarded. We put recycling bin out on Tuesday at 8.30am as notice neighbours had theirs out. Unfortunately think we should have put it out the night before as it wasn’t emptied. A chalk board in kitchen or notice might help with best times for bins to be put out rather than in info book. Despite this we would definitely return. The Plough pub is within walking distance & serves nice food & fish & chip shop is lovely

The cottage is well equipped, comfortable and clean. It is situated in the centre of Sleights close to local amenities and transport. It is an excellent base for exploring Yorkshire coastline and moors. The owners maintain the property well. The downside is there is a small enclosed garden to the side but the back wall and kitchen window is in the neighbouring properties land. Our latest stay was only 4 days and the neighbours mini digger was parked outside the kitchen window. There is no real view from anywhere in the cottage, apart from back bedroom and nowhere to sit outside the property in the sun. It is however an excellent base from which to tour Yorkshire and return to.

  • "We had a few cleaning issues, had to wipe inside cupboards etc before food put away."

Moved the nest of tables to put our bags in the corner and needed to hoover that area as not done. Also noticed on the dining room chairs where the cushion sits in need of a clean actually on the chair, but didn't do as we were on holiday break for my birthday treat. The radiators weren't piping hot apart from the upstairs landing. The lounge didn't throw enough heat out on the radiator and we had issues with no logs left on arrival which the owner rectified within half hour. We went out the following day as we used those logs and bought some more plus kindling which cost us £17.00 we used them all up to as we like to be warm, it wasn't the best log burner we have used tbh. The kitchen was great, plenty of room, and lots of thought gone into kitchen accessories, the fridge was large, always a bonus, dishwasher and we used the washer when we had been walking on NYD, using the quick wash, something we always book when away so we could use them the next day if needed. The bed in the back bedroom (tastefully decorated in duck egg blue), was lovely, comfortable bed and lovely linen too, however, the headboard is thick with dust so needs an hoover. The bathroom is absolutely gorgeous, great to relax in a hot bath after a hike, and lovely towels to dry with. Just one other thing to mention if arriving in the winter, the outside light at the rear is quite dim, fortunately we have torches on our phone so used them to walk up to the back door as it was pitch black, wet and dark, on arrival is via the back door to access the key, so maybe a security light for the side for the winter months till the clocks change, we have 3 at home for different areas and adjust the timer as and when the dark nights draw or for lighter nights.

We did have our car so we got around easy enough but buses are good and stops are closeby. The Cottage is extremely well equipped and comfortable, a welcome pack is provided for you consisting of tea, coffee, biscuits, chocolate, jam and milk which is a lovely touch. We would highly recommend The Hart Inn at Sandsend for a good value with a great menu for food, the pub has a small car park, first come, first served for tables in the pub downstairs area (dogs welcome) but booking is required when dining in the upstairs restaurant (no dogs allowed). We would definitely stay at Eskside Cottage again.

Nice linen for bathroom and beds. Plenty of crockery & cutlery. Dishwasher and washing machine an asset. The welcome pack was appreciated. The village is lovely however the road that runs outside cottage to Egton is very busy and noisy. I do wish that instructions for rubbish bins were printed on a card in kitchen, many tourists do not read the instruction book so are unaware of bin protocol. The rubbish bin was Almost full outside on our arrival, we could just about put our bin liner inside before we departed. Nobody had popped the bin outside for weeks for refuse men to collect Tuesday morning.

  • "The cottage was beautifully decorated and furnished internally, the attention to detail was excellent!"

! However.....surprisingly the same attention to detail had certainly not been lavished on the outside spaces. Externally the cottage was in a very poor state of maintenance with cobwebs, dirt, moss, overgrown plants and weeds everywhere not to mention the poor state of the external paint such as on the pipework in the back yard and the dilapidated garden shed which hasn't seen paint in years. The garden furniture provided had definitely seen better days and was not really usable. This was a real shame as it meant we were unable to take advantage of sitting outdoors in the beautiful weather we experienced during our stay. Apart from the external problems with the cottage we really enjoyed the rest of our stay. Sleightsvillage is beautiful and worth a visit, although slightly tarnished by the amount of Whitby bound traffic running through the centre. We would love to stay in the village again and would consider staying in this cottage again but only if external manintenance issues were attended to.

Thank you for your 100% feedback - we are really pleased you had such a great stay and are planning a return trip. Sorry to hear you were cold - we’d hate to think anyone was chilly as the cottage is usually so nice and toasty, but last week was particularly rainy. The heating is controlled by a thermostat on the staircase so can be adjusted to suit your needs (by default it drops a few degrees at night for guests’ comfort but can be increased manually if required). If any of our guests are ever unsure about anything, they can contact Sykes so that we can advise or remedy any problems. We hope you will come back soon. Property Owner

The area was really quiet and it was easy to park right outside the cottage. The new bathroom was lovely and overall all the rooms were comfortable. I would suggest that the outside grassy space is improved or at least some stepping stones added across the grass to get to the bins but this wasn't a massive issue for us. I'd also suggest some spray cleaner provided in the bathroom for guest use but again not a massive issue but good hygiene practice, not costly to provide and been provided in other properties we've stayed in the area.. I would also suggest a larger duvet for the pushed together twin beds as it wasn't quite big enough for us and also the mattresses seemed to roll you into the middle suggesting they might need turning or replacing. I'd suggest having two full size single beds zip and link. Overall though we had a great holiday, enjoyed the wood burner a couple of nights as a novelty but the central heating was very toasty anyway. Perfectly located around the corner from the pub and fish & chip shop. My suggestions are just to make the property even better.

It was very comfortable and clean. We would definitely consider going there again. However there were a few things we thought could be improved. In the bathroom the towel rail kept falling off and the water pressure in the shower was very low. We were disappointed with the grassed area in the garden which was more moss and mud than grass. This meant our dog would not go out there. The microwave in the kitchen had two front feet missing so you couldn’t open the door without scratching the worktop. It also couldn’t be set and we had to switch it off at the mains to stop it.

The North Yorkshire Steam Railway terminus is a few minutes’ drive with steam trains coming through Sleights, together with regular public transport to and from the nearby port of Whitby. Whitby lies at the mouth of the River Esk and is ideally situated for exploring this beautiful part of Yorkshire. It is an atmospheric town of winding streets and hidden alleys, with a picturesque harbour, safe sandy beaches and, of course, the abbey, reached by the famous 199 steps.
