  It was beautiful and very well maintained. Mark and Fiona were a lovely, pleasant couple. Many thanks for the milk . It was appreciated and it makes all the difference. The cottage is very convenient to lots of different places, only a few minutes drive away. We didn’t walk much due to the weather. Would definitely recommend and hopefully visit again next year

• "A well appointed property with a beautiful garden and wonderful courtyard seating area."

  Friendly owners on site. Watch out for ducks that visit the garden from the nearby pond. Easy access to and from the A1M. Supermarket and garage a short drive away. Lots of reasonably priced parking in Knaresborough for access to local bus and train services to Harrogate and York and beyond. Had a lovely week and would like to go back in the future.

• "It is the first time ever we have been greeted by the owners."

  They showed us how to work appliances and made us very welcome. Sun house was spotless credit to the owners. We did struggle one night with the fire and Mark was out within minutes to sort out. The location was great as it wasn’t far from activities we wanted to do. We had a lovely time and a big thank you to Mark and Fiona.

• "Lovely property, lovely hosts."

  I thought there was a pint of fresh milk in the fridge which we didn't examine for three dsts because we bought milk with us. When we did examine that bottle it was an open, slightly used and it had turned to yoghurt so nobody had checked the fridge when the last visitors left. Same lack of cleaning oven grill plate. Small things.

  We are sorry that you felt the need to leave such negative feedback specifically regarding the fridge and grill. We can assure you that the milk is bought fresh every Saturday and placed directly in the fridge. We also provide some tea and coffee so that our guests can enjoy a hot drink on their arrival, often after a long journey. We can also assure you that Mark and myself whilst cleaning the cottage, clean and check the fridge and grill along with all other areas of the cottage. We also do our own laundry!   A good location with plenty of places to visit. Friendly owners on site. The only downside was that we chose it because there was a pub within easy walking distance but the pub is closed which was a shame.

• "We enjoyed our stay at The Sun House, a beautiful cottage with absolutely everything needed, the owners even left a pint of milk in the fridge for a much needed cup of tea after our long journey to get there."

  The property was very clean, well equipped and the location was great for exploring, we visited Harrogate, York, Ripon, Whitby and our favourite place was Aysgarth Falls. The town of Knaresborough is minutes away with a lovely river walk and some shops, restaurants, takeaways etc. The owners took the time to show us around the property and suggested some days out. The gardens are as beautiful as the cottage, a lovely holiday cottage and one would recommend 100%.

• "Peace and tranquillity in Ferrensby,a rural delight."

  A charming cosy cottage well placed for a multitude of sightseeing excursions. A lovely central gas stove for cosy evenings on cooler days. Easy access shower in fully tiled bathroom. A sunny cottage garden in the morning and a courtyard which catches the evening sun.both with table and chairs. Mark and Fiona made us very welcome ,and it’s obvious how hard they try to make your stay comfortable. We would certainly recommend anyone wishing to spend time exploring this part of Yorkshire to spend a week at the Sun House. The only constructive criticism we have ,would be to be able to open both access doors ,especially if you have limited mobility. It will not however deter us from visiting this excellent cottage in future.

  Thank you for your lovely remarks about the Sun house, we have always striven to provide a home from home for our guests while they are on holiday and it's so nice to have confirmation that we are achieving that. The beautiful poem you wrote for us in the thank you card really made our day and it is something we will always remember, so thank you! Regarding the double doors to the cottage garden from the kitchen, they have flush latches to the top and bottom to allow the second door to open easily. We look forward to your future visit.   It should be noted that the local pub 2 minutes away has shut. Easy driving to Fountains Abbey, Harlow Carr RHS and Salts Mill (for David Hockney exhibitions), Brimham Rocks.

• "Met by Mark the owner."

  We entered the cottage by what looked like narrow double doors. Unfortunately one of the doors was sealed shut giving an entrance of about 18ins. Our first impression was how cold the cottage was. Mark said the previous tenants must have turned the heating off in the kitchen and sitting area. He went in a cupboard and touched the control and said that he wasn't sure if he had put it on or not. We were a bit surprised that he didn't know how it worked as he has been renting the cottage out for about 13 years. He said if it didn't come on to give him a ring. He then told us how to use the cooking range. "Don't use the lefthand oven!" There are 2 small rings and a very large ring which is pretty useless. Also a hotplate that was covered in grease. He then showed us the sitting area where he had lit the gas stove which he said was set on medium. "If you put it on high it will incinerate". We then went to the passage way between the sitting area and the bedroom. No underfloor heating there either. He showed us 2 control panels on the wall. The righthand one was for the bedroom. "Don't touch the lefthand one". That obviously controlled the bathroom which was freezing cold. He said if you put the bathroom light on the heated towel rail would come on. We discovered that it was turned down to the minimum setting so didn't even get warm. The bedroom heating was working! Needless to say we turned the stove up but it took ages to warm the place up.we got up early to light the stove and went back to bed for half an hour. We are not cold people and have our heating set on 18C at home for 2 hours in a morning and 3 hours in an evening. We also turned the towel rail in the bathroom up and left the light on before getting a shower. Mark had told us to leave 30 minutes between showers as the hot water would run out! After we had been in the cottage for about 3 hours we phoned Mark to tell him that the heating hadn't come on. He came and fiddled with the control but much to our surprise (ha ha) it still didn't work. Mark never contacted us again to check it was working. The only the place to store food was in a cupboard which we couldn't open as the door was stuck shut. No instructions for cooker, microwave, TV or heating. No certificates to show gas appliances had been serviced or that the electrics had been checked. No local information. Plenty of lumps of metal hanging about and a display of old chopping boards that you wouldn't dare put food on. No proper food chopping boards, cheese grater or garlic press. No sharp knives. Only 2 small saucepans one with the heat resistant cover split and hanging off. On Sykes listing it shows a 5 tick rating. This is a joke when these days you expect a proper fitted kitchen with dish washer and decent utensils. Oh and by the way the pub is 2 minutes walk away as stated but it has been shut for 2/3 months and is unlikely to open. Felt ripped off! Sykes should have this property reinspected and tell owner to get things sorted out.

  I'm sorry you felt that you had to write such a negative review, there are other ways to resolve issues. I could respond to every charge but it would be too long and boring, therefore I will address the only issue that I was aware of, that being, the underfloor heating in the kitchen. If you had told me that it still wasn't working I would have done what I did after you left, namely, call an electrician, who diagnosed the problem ( a loose connection) then repaired it all within an hour. • "We had an amazing stay at The Sun House."

  We were greeted on arrival and shown around the property, which is located in a quiet area and we heard no noise the whole duration of our stay. The cottage had everything we needed to be comfortable during our stay and everything was extremely clean. We particularly loved the underfloor heating in the bedroom and bathroom as it can get quite cold and this kept it lovely and cosy (due to the time of year we visited!). The hosts were very friendly and were on hand for whatever we needed. We will look forward to visiting again.

  Pity about the weather, we left a day early because of the inclement conditions. The rest of the time we were able to get out to surrounding towns/villages . Very good meals at five different locations. All in all, we had a good time.

• "We arrived in Ferrensby in cold weather."

  The property is listed as having underfloor heating, unfortunately the owner told us on arrival that this was ‘hit and miss’ but asked us not to try to alter the heating controls as it wouldn’t make any difference. The underfloor heating in the bathroom only came on when the light was turned on. He didn’t offer any other form of heating for the bedroom and although the gas heater was efficient for the sitting area, the hall, bedroom and bathroom remained unheated. We had particularly heavy frosts during our stay and without any background heat at all, the property was not comfortable. The owner did not come to ask whether we were comfortable or offer an alternative form of heating, ie convector radiator for the bedroom. In previous properties we have stayed in, the owner or manager has called on the second day of our stay to ask if everything was ok. This did not happen at the Ferrensby property. We left earlier than planned as we were having to get up early to light the gas fire to try to warm the property and decided we would be more comfortable at home. This was a shame as we had been looking forward to this winter break.

• "As Mrs Mcmahon has described in her review, we also arrived to find the cottage cold and was given the exact same information."

  We were told by the owner that the underfloor heating in the kitchen / lounge area was not working and needed significant repairs (the whole floor needed to be taken up). The heating in the hall, bathroom and bedroom was inadequate. We had to light the gas stove first thing in the morning and return to bed waiting for the lounge area to warm up. This would take sometime to reach a reasonable temperature in the lounge area. There is a notice asking guests not to leave the gas stove on whilst away from the cottage and as the property is so poorly insulated it becomes very cold very quickly. On our return each day the gas stove was the only heating available, and again, it took sometime to warm the main room through. The bed was most uncomfortable and clearly needed to be replaced. The owner is aware of this too. Guests also need a torch in the dark evenings as it is quite dark from the car park area to the cottage door. We did mention on our departure these issues with the owner and were informed that the cottage would not be available over the winter months. What makes matters much worse is the fact that we contacted Sykes to inform them of the situation and asked them to amend their website accordingly so that any future guests could take this into consideration. The customer service advisor was really rude, saying that it was the guests responsibility to ask the owner for additional heating. This wasn't the point we were trying to make. We were merely suggesting that future guests would be aware of the problem before booking. It was clear from the website that Sykes were still advertising the cottage in the winter months, contrary to what we had been told. Since our first discussion with Sykes, we have asked to speak to a supervisor. We have spoken to Sykes on four occasions and been promised return calls twice and no one has either investigated the situation, changed the website, or returned a call. This is really poor customer service.

  We were pleasantly surprised to discover a secluded seating area for capturing the evening sun, which was not mentioned in the description of the cottage. The location of the cottage is ideal for visiting numerous places of interest in the area. An excellent cottage at a very reasonable price.

• "Beautiful character cottage full of charm yet with ever modern convenience and the bonus of two delightful garden areas to sit with a book enjoying the peace and quiet or for alfresco dining."

  The property is well situated for exploring this lovely part of Yorkshire with Knaresborough, York , Harrogate and Fountains Abbey all within easy reach. There is a large supermarket just a few miles away and 4 pubs / restaurants within a mile and a half. We especially liked The Wild Swan and The Bluebell Inn. As keen golfers we were delighted to find a selection of lovely parkland courses nearby and all very reasonably priced. The owner of the cottage, Mark was very helpful and friendly. He greeted us on arrival with fresh milk for a cuppa and showed us round the property.We would definitely recommend this cottage and hope to return in the not too distant future.

  A very complete house,everything was perfect. With 2 sitting aereas outside with lot of flowerpots and a beatiful garden. It’s located in a very central part of the neighbourhood, you can visit lots of nice gardens or visit the yorkshire dales. We thougt is was wonderfull.

• "Sun House is a lovely cottage, just right for two people."

  It has two lovely courtyards to sit in according to the sun. It is situated in a great location for exploring the area and beyond. Our hosts were very friendly and helpful and we hope to return to this cottage very soon.

  Beautiful setting overlooking the old orchard, complete with daffodils. Loved seeing the ducks from the local pond visit each morning. Lovely hosts. Ideally placed for Knaresborough, Harrogate and York. If we revisit the area will definitely book The Sun House again.

• "This is the second time we have stayed at The Sun House."

  It is a beautiful cottage full of character and charm. There Is a gas stove which is great at keeping the place toasty off season. The bedroom is a very good size with plenty of wardrobe space and hangers. The bathroom is well lit with a nice deep windowsill for all your toiletries. There is a pretty front garden overlooking the owners apple orchard. A courtyard out the back is the perfect place to unwind in the evening with a glass of wine. The cottage is in a quiet pretty village only a short drive from Knaresborough and then 10 minutes from Harrogate. We love it here and will be coming back. Angela and Paul

• "Having never stayed in a cottage before we where not sure what to expect but this little cottage ticked all the boxes, the owners were very friendly and helpful with any directions that we asked for."

  The only thing I would say is once one person has had a shower leave awhile before the next person has theres due to it being a small hot water tank.

  Our cottage had a lovely fire which warmed up the place so quickly, we had all the facilities we needed and wanted. Fiona and Mark made us feel completely at home and we are very thankful to them for letting us stay in their lovely cottage.
