  • "A lovely cottage, very well equipped and well located for seeing the area."

It has very effective heating as well as the fire so really cosy for a winter holiday. The tasteful Christmas decorations gave it a lovely festive feel. It was great to have a good food pub just down the road as well as the places a 15 minute walk away in Robin Hoods Bay. It'd be lovely to go back in the summer and enjoy sitting out at the back of the cottage watching the sunset!

Your kind review is really appreciated. Whatever the season Braeside and the local area has lots to offer. Property Owner

The kitchen was well equipped and the bed very comfortable. Loved the deep bath. The area was great for walking with easy access to the cinder track and Cleveland Way. Really nice pub in village too. Would definitely recommend and we’d stay again.

  • "Our second stay within 9 months at this lovely cottage."

Perfect for our needs on this short break. Walking our dog through the sleepy Flyingthorpe village, along the Cinder Track and/or taking the footpaths through the fields towards Robin Hoods Bay and Boggle Hole was such a lovely pace and space. Food at Boggle Hole YHA was really fab. Flyingdales Inn (3 minutes walk away from the cottage) was enjoyed 2 nights in a row. The beef pie is very good and the environment very dog friendly. Banards tiny shop 2 minutes away from Braeside sells fresh bread, milk and groceries produce. We also had a drive out and walked through the beautiful woodlands of May Beck to the Falling Foss Tea Rooms and what a treat, both the walk and the food were. The cottage is great with everything we needed plus a view of the majestic Ravenscar rising in displays of sunshine or sea frets and the meadows from; bedroom, bathroom, lounge windows and outside seating area were tranquil. We walked along the beach to Ravenscar (watch the tides) from RHB, took in the stunning view looking back from the gardens of Ravenhall and also managed a little seal watching. Thank you for another lovely stay we will be booking again.

You've certainly made use of your stay and visited the beautiful surrounding areas. Thanks for your positive comments and we hope to see you again soon at Braeside ! Property Owner

  • "Braeside was a wonderful holiday home that was thoroughly enjoyed by 3 generations."

It catered brilliantly for our needs and surpassed expectations. The location was great for exploring the area - and also for the local playground, bus service, shop and good pub. It was lovely, and relaxing, to sit, either in the courtyard or kitchen, looking over the buttercup meadow to Ravenscar. We had very easy communication with the kind and supportive owners. We would be very happy to return!

Thanks for your kind review and we're glad all members of your family enjoyed their stay at Braeside and the surrounding areas. Property Owner

  • "A very good location and facilities."

A good pub and friendly people, ideal for walks with dogs. The only things that let it down was the cleanliness, we had to clean the grease from the grill pan, few plates have chips and there was a constant odour from the shower room/toilet. The photo from the rear needs to be updated, it shows gate from the mentioned courtyard into a lovely field behind the property, but on arrival a sign has appeared on the gate saying no dogs allowed in. I think this should be shown in the photos as it is slightly misleading.

Hi, thanks for your comments which we'll take on board and review our property description. Property Owner

  • "Disgraceful."

One hour before arrival I was phoned up and told that one of the bathrooms was out of action. They explained that this wasn't a big issue as the property has two bathrooms. The second functioning bathroom had a 'bath shower' and I said - tbh there's two of us and both are pretty easy going guys so I doubt it will be a issue, don't worry about it. On arrival and as you can see in the pictures of the property advertised, the bath is categorically not a bath shower. There is no curtain or screen to stop the water spilling onto the floor, no hook to hang the hose on and it isn't long enough to be one any way. It is simply a hose assisting the bath. The result of this was on the first day I tried to simply have a bath, but the boiler for the bath didn't seem sufficient to heat up water for a bath that size leaving it pretty luke warm. After this I spent the next four days actually sitting down in the bath holding the hose above my head, which wasn't good pressure or particularly warm and obviously a very unenjoyable experience in general. By the time I left the house I felt pretty gross, and on discussing this with my partner once home she pointed out that had I taken her (not a friend) we would have had to leave and check into a hotel as she would not have been satisfied with this arrangement. Subsequent to this I got in touch with Sykes Cottages and said basically that I didn't want to cause a fuss but felt it was reasonable to request a fairly reasonable discount in view of this issue. Subsequent to such I would be quite happy and still consider the stay and experience overall positive. Which I imagine most people reading this review would agree is more than reasonable, given that being able to wash is a fairly reasonable expectation. Initially they said I was told about the issues with the facilities there were, and I had received an email about this prior to the stay. In fact no such email was sent and neither they nor I could find one. Then they inferred that I was being unreasonable and they had phoned me prior to arrival. Which they had 1 hour before arriving on the day and told misinformation that there was a functioning 'bath shower' - clearly not a sensible/reasonable situation time wise. Then after both these things the owner reluctantly offered me a 10% discount like he was doing me a favour, and I was being dramatic. Absolutely crazy behaviour by both the company and the owner. I wouldn't recommend either party. Both of which took zero responsibility for this issue. Which is particularly disappointing as I flagged it up in a very reasonable fashion stating that I really would rather not make a complaint. Yet here we are. I haven't taken the discount on principle as clearly it is totally off the mark of the scope of the issue and am completely flabbergasted that both parties have behaved so irresponsibly in the face of what is obviously a reasonable request and an obvious issue. It is clear that 1. One bathroom was out of action. So we were never going to have the full functionality of the house we paid for. 2. That we were told misinformation that there was another working shower and we had no way to properly clean ourselves. 3. That in dealing with this complaint rather than reasonably dealing with what is a very clear cut issue in a sensible fashion and easily putting it to bed with someone pretty happy to be reasonable, I have been held in contempt as if it is me talking nonsense bonkers.

Firstly many apologies regarding the shower room being out of action. A difficult repair of the shower room was required over numerous days which current bookings didn't permit leading up to your booking. This was conveyed to you by Sykes in description and with a compensation level Sykes advised you had accepted prior to arrival. Again apologies that this affected your stay, the works have now been carried out and the property is back to being as advertised. Property Owner

The cottage was as described beautifully clean and in a great location although we booked this cottage due to it having 2 bathrooms but when we arrived one of the bathrooms developed a problem and was not useable the toilet leaked through the ceiling with dirty water we did let the owner know the other bathroom toilet did not flush properly although we made the best of the holiday we would not use again and feel that some refund would not be unreasonable

We are sincerely sorry that this situation occurred during your stay at Braeside. We are taking steps to urgently rectify the problem. We hope that it didn't impact too much on your overall enjoyment of your holiday. Property Owner
