  • "Yew Tree Cottage is a lovely property in a quiet village location."

It feels remote but is in fact not far at all from larger villages and towns with amenities. The property itself is perfect for two and was particularly cozy with the wood burning stove. The weather was not brilliant during our stay so a fire in the evening was very welcome. The kitchen was fully equipped but was lacking in preparation space for meals as the available counter space was already occupied by the kettle, toaster and microwave. This was only a small inconvenience though as meals were simple or we were eating out. The only other comment I would make concerns the pictures on the walls. While beautifully decorated and styled, we found it very odd that the pictures on the walls were of insects. With such beautiful countryside around it would have been really lovely to see some local landscapes or places of interest (perhaps an old map of East Riding or a painting of York Minster) on the walls instead. This is not a complaint but simply an observation and suggestion. The cottage is a really lovely property and we very much enjoyed our stay at Yew Tree Cottage. Thank you.

  • "An excellent place to stay for a week."

The cottage is thoroughly modern inside and very clean with everything provided that you will need. The cottage is part of the same property that is the residence of Gill the owner which means that she is more often than not around if she is needed. Hotham is a very quiet place that appears to be (under) populated by people with more properties than they know what to do with so therefore there are no shops within the village. There is a pub however, which is excellent.

There are good walks from the door or further afield in the Wolds, for bird enthusiasts the North Cave Wetlands are just a mile or so away, Beverley is delightful, and the coast isn't far. The accommodation was very comfortable with stylish décor, very clean, a comfortable bed, large shower, fast wifi, sunny patio area outside the front door, and easy parking. The owner, Gill, lives in the main house and is very helpful and friendly. Hotham is a delightful village with lots of good local walks either from the doorstep ( OS 1:25000 maps provided ) or some lovely wolds within a short drive. Nearby Beverley is well worth a visit, especially for the Saturday market, and the old town and quay area of Hull was surprisingly enjoyable (sorry, Hull, shouldn't have pre-judged! ). Would be good to return when the pubs are fully open again – we didn't visit the Hotham Arms as the evenings were a bit chilly for al fresco eating. Only small point to note is that the Sykes description says there is a fridge/freezer, but actually there is only a larder fridge.

This is our first time of staying in a cottage and we weren't disappointed, we were pleased with the condition which was very clean and welcoming. The owner Gill lived next door and popped round to see us during our week's stay to check everything was to our satisfaction. We were pleased to say it was. We did mention that a coffee table and a tray would be useful and within a few minutes Gill popped back with both items. Very impressed. We would definitely recommend this cottage which is situated in a lovely quiet village. There are places of interest that we enjoyed visiting, such as the walks, particularly in the local park which took you through to North Cave, a local Farm Shop and restaurant called Drewtons, a Nature Reserve called "Wetlands" and we also liked touring around the local villages. The local pub called the Hotham Arms is well worth a visit and is in within walking distance. We also enjoyed the Dog and Duck in nearby Walkington, another lovely village. All in all, a very relaxing time. We shall return in the future.
