  • "The barn is a lovely little place to stay, we loved it."

I have stayed before with previous owners and what was nice from them was a welcome basket waiting for you when you arrived. The barn is very cosy and clean. Just a couple of little things maybe an iron/ironing board and a small vacuum especially when you have pets with you, just to enable guests to keep the place clean if staying for a week or so. But all in all a great place, with equally great owners. We loved it soo much we have booked for Xmas 2025 and can’t wait. Hoping to get a cheeky stay in between too. If you want a nice quiet break in a beautiful little village then this is the one for. 100% recommend!!!

  • "The positives."

great location, re local pubs and fantastic walks within walking distance from The Barn. Lovely quiet village. The Barn however has a lot of negatives. Which was disappointing. Strong smell of smoke from the wood burner (We did not use) as soon as you open the front door. Very dark once inside. No opener on loung window two small skylights (do not open) one in the bedroom unable to open and had a dark blind permanently closed. Leak in shower going through to the small closet visible around electrical socket giving a trong smell of damp. Uncomfortable bed with only one pillow each. The Barn for us was quite claustrophobic with lack of ventilation and light. We made the best of it as only there for 6 nights Quite honestly The Barn needs an upgrade it needs much more lighting.and ventilation The fabric curtains and very old carpet need replacing as I'm sure the smell of smoke is in all of the fabric! Shame really because it is a very quaint little Barn conversion in a fantastic location

  • "The cottage was great, really querky and unusual, but everything that you needed."

Emily was very kind, there was milk in the fridge, tea and coffee sachets and she brought us eggs and muffins for our breakfast the following morning. Could not be happier. The village is charming, wonderful stone houses, very quiet and great walks. But accessable too, a bus stop a few yards up the road with regular buses to Scarborough or Pickering. We enjoyed exploring the area visiting local sites and revisiting some of our favourites. In the evenings it was lovely to sit in the little walled garden, relax with a glass of wine, read, talk and listen to the Swift's screeching joyously in the darkening sky. What a great place to stay.

The bed was really uncomfortable, so much so we both ended up with bad backs. The cushions on the sofa were dirty, the sofa itself was uncomfortable as well. Suggest that whoever cleans the property has a crash course in how to really clean. There were cobwebs all over, the windows were filthy inside and outside. We came home two days early it was that bad.

So sorry to hear this Ian, I wish we had known when we dropped in to check everything was okay- we would have done anything to get your holiday back on track. Property Owner

  • "Had a lovely week."

Cottage quirky and ideal as a base. Very comfy bed but better pillows and more needed. Didn't need the log burner but the bucket of logs looked a bit stingy. The fridge/freezer "sang" a lot during the evenings! I don't use QR so I don't know what the "information" was. A written handy hints would have been useful - for instance how to use the electric hob, the "oven" and the nespresso machine. Plus recommendations for pubs, shops and walks. I will recommend.

Thanks so much for the feedback Beverley. We have taken it onboard and all of the cottages now have a guide of our favourite things in the local area. Thanks again. Property Owner

  • "The barn was in a good location for touring North Yorkshire, however, it was let down in several areas."

The barn generally was grubby and really needed a good clean. The carpets throughout were well past their sell by date, the cushions in the living area were dirty, the bed was rock hard and extremely uncomfortable, there were dead flies and moths on window sills and an unacceptable amount of cobwebs and spiders in easily cleaned areas and there was a strong smell of drains in the en-suite. The TV needs updating as it was really slow to react to channel and volume changing. Externally the patio area needed a good clean.

So sorry to receive this feedback Chris, I wish it was something we could have talked about and rectified for you when we came to check if everything was okay. Property Owner

Thanks so much for the feedback David, we will absolutely take it onboard. I know when we spoke you were disappointed that the TV didn’t come out of the bed like it did 10-15 years ago. • "Our stay here was perfect and exactly what we wanted!"

The barn is a beautifully rustic and cosy place to stay - the brick interior was the big selling point for us, and the mezzanine is a lovely unique element too. It's extremely well catered for facilities, especially in the kitchen. There is a TV hidden behind the wooden door in the corner of the living room, which is nice and discreet. Some reviewers have mentioned the bed being very firm - we can confirm that it is still a firm mattress however it didn't affect us at all, in fact we slept perfectly, so I suppose it's just a matter of preference. I will mention as a 6'1 person for other taller people that you will have to spend a lot of time ducking under the various beams - I banged my head several times - but that's obviously not a criticism for the place. The hosts are very friendly and helpful, offering us advice on where to go for walks, food etc. Would love to stay again, thanks so much!

As owners you could not fault them. They are very lovely people. The Barn was clean and well stocked with everything we needed. Amazing shower. The only criticism we could point out was the bed was a bit hard for our liking but that is down to personal choice. We would recommend it to anyone wishing to book and it is very good being dog friendly. Our two dogs soon settled in there. The woods at the end of the village is lovely for walking the dogs.

  • "My partner and I booked a weeks break at The Barn to celebrate our Anniversary along with our two Sausage pups."

The hosts (Ed & Emily) were very warm and friendly and towards the end of the week found ourselves having a good natter and a catch up in the garden. Hugo (their dog) is lovely and was best friends with our two Sausage dogs along with the other guests dogs too. The Barn is cosy and a lovely place for a couple to escape reality with their pups. The shower is impressive and the log burner is a real treat. The hosts are very welcoming and make every effort to ensure you are comfortable, but are not too intrusive and respect if you wish to be left to your own devices too. It was a nice touch to receive a text a couple of days before our arrival from the hosts to welcome us and to ask if we were celebrating any special occasions. They kindly gave us a bottle of Prosecco as a gift for our anniversary. We didn't realise at first that the garden area would be shared with the hosts and other guests. However this did work out well in the end as we got to know the other guests from the Potting Shed. The other guests dogs, Hugo and our pups all got along so well which was nice which allowed us to relax and not have to worry about dog arguments. The dogs would wait for each other in the morning in the garden for a play time which was fun to watch. We improvised with closing the gate to the driveway to prevent any escapes. We feel it would be beneficial to have a cooker oven as currently The Barn only has a 4 piece electric hob, however we did make do with what we had and it was not a big issue. Also another suggestion is to have a squeegee for the shower room to clear up the water in the walk in shower. My partner found the bed too hard however I found it comfy, this is down to personal preference. We would recommend The Barn to friends and family for a relaxed break in the countryside in a village setting. We will return again for sure!

  • "An attractive, quirky and very comfortable cottage, which we enjoyed immensely."

I should perhaps mention for future users that there is no oven in the kitchen - just a hob and a microwave. It's totally our own fault for not reading the description properly, but we'd gone prepared with food that wouldn't cook in a microwave. The issue was soon solved once we'd been to the shops the next day, and it certainly didn't spoil our enjoyment of the cottage. Hutton Buscel is a very pleasant village, with plently of good dog walks straight from the front door. Whilst perhaps not a holiday destination in its own right and having no shop or pub, it is very conveniently placed for coast, forests and moors (and indeed plenty of other attractions) and we were certainly not short of things to do. Would definitely recommend!

We felt so welcome when we arrived. Cottage house is located in a beautiful little cottage with lots of places to walk with your dog. The Barn is very cosy and it is actually very spacious. On our arrival we were welcomed with bottle of chilled Prosecco in the fridge which is very nice. There were also essential things like: tea, milk, coffee, salt and pepper in the kitchen. You dont need to worry about pans or plates etc as everything is provided there. In terms of bedroom and bathroom - the shower is lovely, towels provided, bedding is a really good quality and hangers for clothes are also there (maybe could be a few more). The only things what I can think of to improve it is the actual mattress - uncomfortable and makes lots of noise, the second thing is the wifi - connection is really bad, we used our internet on the phones so it was ok but when we tried to use Wifi then nothing wanted to load up. Apart from that I can’t think of any other things because it was lovely week for me, my partner and our little chihuahua. It was such a lovely atmopshere there that my partner decided to propose to me in that cottage so it is magical! We are already thinking about booking it again so definitely I would recommend it to everyone! Thank you Ed, Emily and Hugo xx

Lots of places to visit and explore, such a beautiful area. Welcome pack of prosecco, tea and biscuits on arrival. Very thoughtful. Only couple of things we would say.. there was no sugar. Obviously not a problem if you don't have sugar in your tea which I do! And there were no cloths or anything to wash dishes with so we did have to buy our own. They were only minor things, it didn't take anything away from the holiday! Also the bed really isn't that comfortable and makes noise at the slightest of movement. But other than that everything was perfect! The walk in waterfall shower was lovely! Lots of spiders but don't let put you off! Thank you to Ed and Emily for a lovely week. And Hugo of course!

Unfortunately, as previous reviews have noted, there are still problems with the property, not least its wifi that would stop working every evening. Regarding facilities, the bedroom would benefit from some drawers as, apart from some hanging space, we had to live out of our bags for the week. The seats around the dining table are not those pictured and are uncomfortably low/high for the table (also not the one pictured). Finally, the bed is not on the mezzanine - while the listing doesn't directly claim it is, we were slightly mislead by the images of the property and the "1 x mezzanine double" description on Sykes.
