  • "We had a couple of issues and these were quickly sorted."

Arrived on Friday to no electrics working. Soon resolved by a lady from the local area when I contacted Sykes. We were told before arriving the shower in the en suite was not working too. A plumber arrived on Monday to fix this. My mum tripped down the decking outside and ended up breaking a bone in her hand. Maybe some visible strips on the steps could work here (just a suggestion). This all sounds like a negative review but it is not.. these things happened but through no fault of the property owner. The cottage was spacious, comfortable and clean. We visited some lovely places.. Yarm, Northallerton, Darlington, all quaint little places to visit charity shops, bakery’s, butchers and greengrocers. Osmotherley has a nice reservoir to walk round. The locals are such nice people making us feel so welcome and keen to advise on things to do and places to visit. There is a park close by for the kids, board games and a pool table. We all enjoyed Terrys chippy van on Tuesday. What a great idea this is. The hot tub was lovely to finish off the day too. We have had a great week despite some set backs, I would definitely recommend this to others if wanting a nice chilled week.

    Furniture needs updating

Hi, we are sorry you didn’t have a perfect experience. Our cobwebs have been removed. With regard to the furniture the sofa and cuddle chair in the front room was brand new 3 years ago and in perfect condition. The front room table is also in perfect condition. Upstairs could do with some new furniture which we have instructed our maintenence company to replace at the earliest convenience. Kind regards Property Owner

  • "We had a nice time at anvil although the cottage decor was quite dated and there was a lack of kitchen equipment to be able to use the property for the purpose of self catering ."

The smell of oil through the house was overwhelming. Clothes that hadn’t been worn and were in the suitcases had to be washed as they smelt of oil. The hot tub was dirty green and smelly , it seems like it hadn’t been cleaned properly in a good while and as that was the main reason for booking the cottage , we were disappointed as we didn’t use the hot tub as it smelt like stagnant pond water. The property welcome pets but didn’t mention there was a hole in the back fence/bush so put small dog ended up in someone else’s garden on 2 occasions and we ended up having to keep the dog inside which wasn’t ideal especially in the heat. The location of the cottage was beautiful and the size of the property was perfect however , unfortunately we won’t be returning.

  • "I want to highlight some issues we encountered during our recent stay."

The house is in need of serious updating. The furniture is old and worn, and the beds are very uncomfortable, all requiring new mattresses. Additionally, the outdoor area was not well-maintained, with broken decking and outdated garden furniture. The hot tub seemed to be the cleanest area of the property, but getting into it was risky due to a broken and splintered decking area including rusty step ladders. The pervasive oil smell throughout the property made it impossible to enjoy our time indoors. Even opening the windows and doors didn't alleviate the odor much. The property's smell was like it was soaked in turpentine, emitting from an oil fired boiler located in the utility room, where the games room adjoins it. The smell of fumes coming from the boiler was so strong that we were unable to enter the utility or games room. The main bedroom is directly above the utility where the oil fired boiler is located. At night with the windows and doors closed, the fumes were so strong that my eyes were stinging. I had an asthma attack, and both my husband and I felt extremely nauseous. Even our small dog seemed very lethargic with shallow breathing. The overall cleanliness did not meet our expectations, and the strong smell of fumes was unbearable. We entered the property at around 3:50 pm and left approximately 13 hours after arrival. The cost of the holiday was £690 for three nights. We have reported the issue to Sykes Cottages, who have been helpful. However, multiple attempts to contact the owner have led to frustration for both us and Sykes Cottages. The pictures advertised on the Sykes website show a marked difference to the property itself. We didn't receive the service as advertised. We are considering a chargeback through our credit card, as the owner seems not prepared to work with us and Sykes Cottages to come to an agreement. We have also contacted trading standards. It is crucial to highlight that we seldom leave reviews, but the health and safety issues we faced had a significant impact on our experience. These issues must be addressed for the benefit of future guests. It's not just our review; other guests have also reported similar disappointing experiences with this property.

  • "The oil fired central heating system has not been mended."

The smell of fumes was overwhelming and we chose to sit outside and ventilate the property. The smell was particularly bad in the Utility room, pool room, main bedroom and kitchen. Despite lengthy ventilation the fumes led to a member of our party being asphyxiated and he vomited. We had to vacate the main bedroom. As there were only six in our party we were able to locate on the other nights to the other bedrooms. We were told the problem had been remedied but it clearly hasn't. We would not recommend this property indeed we would be concerned about the safety for other residents. When we went home there was a strong noticeable smell on our clothing and luggage. This property is not safe. The TV's were virtually useless. Two channels only BBC 1 and BBC2. Luckily the weather was good so we could sit outside and enjoy the Hot Tub.

  • "Anvil Cottage is a lovely house, very spacious, very clean, lovely garden area, our only issues was the smell of oil all weekend, the plumber arrived on Friday evening to repair the issue, however the smell was really bad all weekend, even though we had the doors and windows open, also there is a gap in the trees at the back of the garden which a small dog can get through and our dog got through into next doors garden!"

luckily they were home and we got him back, but it would of been an issue if they hadn't been at home. However this would not stop us going back to Anvil cottage, we had a lovely family weekend, and planning on coming back next year. The village itself is lovely and the Lord Nelson pub is lovely and does an amazing Sunday Lunch. The owners left us a bottle of wine for the inconvenience of the plumber coming out on Friday which was a nice gesture. Would highly recommend staying here for a relaxing family weekend.

  • "Really upset about this stay, I booked this for a family get together (as we all live in different area’s of the uk)."

Firstly the booklet said “there maybe a “slight” smell from the oil heater, this wasn’t the case at all the smell was unbearable in the kitchen and utility, to the point we ended up sitting freezing with the heating off and the windows open to try air it out. We called Skye’s cottages on the Saturday to double check everything was in order with it, as there was no safety certificate on display to say “it was fit for purpose”and We all woke up on the Saturday with banging heads with the fumes, to be told “if we feel we need to go to hospital to get checked out, then feel free, but the lady (who seriously needed some customer service training) said “what do you want me to say that will make this situation better!” ABSOLUTELY SHOCKING!!!! The water in the hot tub was green, the decking was falling to bits, couldn’t go in the pool room as it was right next to the oil heater and oh god the smell! All in all, it was a horrible stay. And if I hadn’t traveled over an hour to get to it I think we would have all gone home early or at least checked into a hotel. The think that was most upsetting was the fact that Skye’s cottages didn’t care what so ever, they had there money, so get on with it. I definitely wouldn’t recommend this house to anyone!!! Which is such a shame as it could be a lovely house.

Lovely local pub a short stroll away. Garden Centre 2 miles away (short drive or 30 min walk) and about 25 minutes to Northallerton. • "I was worried upon reading some recent reviews about the cleanliness of the cottage as I have cancer and am immunocompromised I have to be very careful."

But I need not have worried it was spotless and what a beautiful home. The pictures do not give you a clear indication of size. This place is huge. The attention to detail being a home away from home the owners have attempted is amazing. Even down to the salt and vinegar in the cupboard to the welcome bottle of milk and biscuits. Really good. Tips for future guests and owners: A a family of 8 we needed more toilet paper. Don't know about anyone else but in our house we use at least 2 rolls a day no idea what they do with it. If your taking dogs their is a couple of holes in the fence which could be easily fixed with chicken wire. Our dog got into next doors garden 3 times so in the end we couldn't leave the doors open. So take some crate panels if you have them to block the holes but this definitely needs fixing asap. The hot tub was amazing and was used by us 4 times a day being 8 of us and a hot tub for 4 people. At the end of the trip it did turn green. The owners leave chlorine but 1tsp in 3 pots assuming per night but on the info left it says after every use so definitely need more chlorine leaving if you want guests to keep it clean. All in all though we absolutely loved it and would definitely return.

  • "The property as a whole was equipped with everything you could need living in the countryside and the little messages on appliances were a nice touch."

The WiFi managed to keep all the kids happy which is normally weak in such a rural area. There was alot of bugs and wasps but this was a given. Maybe a couple of wasp traps would be a nice touch as this did impact our time in the garden. The only other slight issue with was the hot tub with 4 kids this got dirty after the first day even with sandals being used before entering. Although the chlorine was provided to input at the end of the evening this did not clean the hot tub sufficiently due to the amount of suicidal flys wanting to enter it...daily maintenance might be a better solution. Finally although damp was declared on a note when we arrived at the hotel that should of been declared prior as my wife has asthma and was a bit heavy on her chest. All in all though we had a great time and for the money over the summer holidays was great value, lovely little town.

  • "This is a difficult review to write as the property has lots of really good features, it’s lovely and warm, hot tub is a real treat in the country setting, games room is a bonus, house is big enough for 8 not to feel crammed in, local village is nice and residents friendly and there was nothing else we needed to make the stay enjoyable, however we do echo previous reviews, Maintenance isn’t great, there is a strong smell of oil in the back kitchen and games room, the decking is very slippy round the hot tub and it would really benefit from a gazebo/pergola above to aid use in the winter, the mattress in second double room is uncomfortable and although surfaces clean on arrival we felt it could do with a bit of a deep clean."

Also previously commented on, one shower for 8 people is a slight struggle. We also appreciated the little treats on arrival but felt the note regarding “party people” was a little harsh and could have been worded better for those families not in the category the letter is aimed at. However none of the above would lead us to complain as we had a great time with the kids playing games etc just felt it might help for improvements to be made.

There was also ample washing up liquid and tea towels available. There are a few maintenance issues we came across which centred around the kitchen: the ice machine didn’t work/was frozen up, the oven control knob only had one or two settings that worked, the dishwasher door bashed into the architrave & the washer door was also not fitted correctly.

Prior to our visit I had read some of the previous reviews that had been written and had a few concerns. None however were founded. Some people are just too fussy. Yes there was a smell in the utility room when the boiler started up, but it’s oil powered heating so it is going to give off fumes, but all that’s needed is to open the window. The cottage is ideal for 8, fully equipped with everything that you would need. The hot tub is a great bonus and sits in a private garden. The neighbours were very friendly and helpful. A few aspects concerned us; there was a strong smell of oil / kerosene coming from the boiler in the utility room which seeped into the adjoining kitchen and pool room if the doors weren't kept shut. Also, the floor tiles in the en-suite bathroom were very slippy when wet - a grab rail would be helpful.
