  • "The property was quiet, and well located for the abbey and town."

The kitchen was well equipped and the mini dishwasher was a revelation. The bathroom was good too. The cottage was also warm and cosy, if a little dark inside. The main downside was the bed was rickety and uncomfortable. Also, the TV was awful with untidy wires hanging down the wall.

  • "It's these little things that make a house a home."

.. We got off in Whitby and quickly did some shopping in the supermarket. When we got to the house, we put the groceries on the kitchen counter. Our first impression - the induction hob was smeared. The tiles behind it too. The first question we asked ourselves: how clean is the rest of it? Otherwise, it's a really nice house with lots of lovely little details, lovely colours. A few bigger cushions for the sofas would have been nice and would have made everything a little more comfortable. More light, another point. We put a bedside lamp in the window below to make it a little brighter and cozier. We had hot water and we slept very well. What wasn't so good... There were limescale stains all over the bathroom fittings and the sink drain. It just hadn't been cleaned properly. Maybe other guests don't mind that? It seemed a little unhygienic to us. We had the impression that everything had just been wiped down quickly and that was it... In our opinion, it had not been properly cleaned. In many places in and around the house, spiders had had enough time to weave their webs... The WiFi worked very poorly. The websites sometimes took a long time to load or simply stopped working. The freezer compartment was iced up all the way down to the fridge; it hadn't been defrosted for a while. The water in the bathroom sink drained very, very, very slowly. There is an entry about this in the guest book that is a few weeks old. But nothing has happened in the meantime. The shower head in the bathroom was calcified/brownish/yellowed. Not a particularly pretty sight. This was also mentioned in an online review months ago. But nothing has happened here in the meantime either. The light in the extractor hood didn't work (cooking under "difficult conditions"). In the bathroom there is only 1 socket for a shaver - nothing else. The light from the ceiling falls directly from behind. There is no light on the mirror. So everything was a bit dark. A wet shave can easily become a bloody affair. There were enough towels. Although 2 in the bathroom and the ones for the kitchen smelled a bit musty, as if they had been left in the washing machine for too long. The garden behind the house could also do with a bit of attention. Nettles, thistles and weeds grew heavily on the edges and on the terrace and dominated the overall appearance. The garden was not really inviting to linger. Our impression was that everything looked a bit run down. Dried dog excrement on what could be described as "lawn". The heating came on early every morning. And then the pipes started knocking and cracking. Maybe it would be a good idea to bleed the heating. Is nobody interested in this? Is it even checked before the handover? Does nobody notice something like this? Does nobody feel responsible for it? We would have liked someone to have checked everything carefully beforehand. The kitchen equipment - a different topic... 3 large coffee mugs, 1 small coffee mug 3 water glasses 2 small and 2 large plates 6 egg cups!!! (for 2 people?) 4 bowls 2 different wine glasses: Why not at least 2 white wine and 2 red wine glasses? 2 pots, 1 frying pan 3 tablespoons, 4 knives, 4 forks etc. ... Why do I even need a dishwasher when there is so little crockery? And that was what we found so unfortunate. We are not talking about major investments here. These are small things. And it is precisely the small things that turn... a house into a home. The kitchen is for someone who doesn't like to cook or can't cook. Who maybe just warms something up, prefers to go out to eat or have takeaway. Everything somehow didn't quite fit together. The equipment looked more like "leftovers" that had been left over over the years. In our eyes, self-catering looks different... 2 steaks and a few fried potatoes? Not possible - only 1 pan. Pasta? Not possible either - no sieve and no deep plates. A good Whitby Gin or a cider brandy? No suitable glasses! We wanted to celebrate something - what should we drink the champagne out of? Basics such as scissors, a sieve, pasta plates, champagne glasses, wine/beer glasses, a second pan, glasses for a fire are missing... it's not much! The starter set with wood was there, with exactly 2 small cubes for lighting - no more, no less. Everything was counted exactly. 1 small sponge for 2 weeks and 3x dishwasher tablets. It's these little things that turn a house into a home. So... it was just a house. We have been coming to England for vacation for over 20 years now - sometimes twice a year. And they have almost always been great vacations. This time we were missing something...

So close to the town centre so that we could pop back for lunch then head back into the town. We will definitely be back for another stay. It’s such a cute and cosy cottage out of the way of the crowds.it had everything we needed. I wish we could’ve had another night but won’t wouldn’t allow it. The only downside was that it was very warm at night but we did have a thick duvet so not really a problem. It had a nice little enclosed garden for the dogs. It’s definitely worth a visit

Downstairs has under floor heating with radiators upstairs, with an added bonus of a wood burning stove. The back had a small enclosed garden ideal for our dog. The cottage is lovely the access leaves a lot to be desired. The heating system is crazy it was a really cold very wet couple of days and we couldn’t find a way to work the radiators to dry our outdoor clothes The equipment is basic one of each item no bread knife. I think the amount of kindling left for the fire was mean Someone who has no experience of an induction hob would have difficulty understanding it as did we. The garden could be lovely the grass had been cut but that was it disappointing tho we didn’t have the opportunity to use it it would be good for others using the cottage if it was better maintained. Overall it is a lovely cottage but I think its position is better for a younger couple we are in out seventies. We are relatively fit but did find the hills a challenge. We wouldn’t book the cottage again purely for its position in the town

  • "We had a lovely time at Cedars cottage, we were only there for 4 days, it was clean, and close to town center and the bay."

It had clean bedding, bed was very comfy, nice fresh towels, could benefit from a hand towel in the bathroom, shower was nice and hot. Thanks for the milk and t bags, nice touch. Would go back defo.. Now the few thing that I think need addressed, the fire starter pack is a non starter, we got 4 logs and 1 fire lighter, ?, no kindling, so this fire was never going to work, I have a log burner and believe me you cannot start a log burner with 4 logs and 1 fire lighter. Unless you got Rambo type skills, The number 1 seems to feature a lot in this cottage, only 1 T towel, it has a dishwasher but only 1 soap tablet, which was nicely displayed on the kitchen bench. We had to use the T towel a lot, as it was hard decision as to when you use your one tablet, you ask to put the washer on the night before we leave, don’t think they would be clean with no tablet as we did use the 1 that was left . ? There is only 1 bulb in the ceiling light which has three bulb fittings. So its very dim of night. Also for anyone who is going, take a 4 plug extension, as there is only 1 three pin plug in the sitting room available to charge mob, laptops, I pads etc. Last thing, the new sink needs silicone round it, I washed the dishes, and the water seeped over the side and dripped into the cupboard underneath and soaked the plates etc. Apart from them few things we had a lovely time. Ps, need to adjust the directions for people, you drive into a brand new housing estate, we had to ring cos the directions don't mention the right hand turn down an ash track which is 50 yards on the right-hand side as soon as you enter the new estate.

You felt off grid, but you could walk into the town within 10 mins, and the same again to the Abbey and the coastal paths. The cottage is well equipped, garden is big enough for the dogs, but could just do with a mini makeover, to match the lovely interior of the cottage, Great starter kit for the log burner. • "The cottage is very comfortable and well-placed."

It made a wonderful quiet base for exploring a heavingly busy Whitby, being especially handy for walking to the abbey (and the brewhouse nextdoor to it), the coastal path and Saltwick Bay. We'll very happily come back! There were a few niggles. Everything was dusty and there were a lot of cobwebs. The kitchen could do with a sieve or colander for draining pasta, a breadknife, a second chopping board (the enormous bread board had already split almost all the way through when we arrived), and maybe a few glasses that aren't enormous. The wood for the stove mentioned in the folder was missing from the little shed, and there weren't any instructions for any devices, so we had to google how to use the induction hob. We didn't bother with the dishwasher, but it wasn't clear that much of the crockery would have fitted into it. Overall a lovely stay, but it felt a bit casual in terms of setup.

The sofa was to uncomfortable for my partner to sit so he had to sit in one of our deck chairs in the evening, it had no support. The garden had not been look after, the grass was very long and the little patio was covered in weeds so we could not sit outside at all.
