  • "We went as a party of 4 - 2 couples."

We had a short stay of 5 nights essentially for the cricket @ Headingly. The location and the cottage were superb. Our South African friends said "it was the best they'd stayed in". We were able to go for walks and enjoy the views from the patio area. We were lucky with the weather. A very comfortable stay but beware if you're tall a few head bumps on sloping roofs upstairs. Thank you to Trevor and Emma, we have already recommended to other friends.

  • "A really lovely property in a lovely location."

As stated the second bedroom is a little small with a low sloping ceiling. The living area is absolutely gorgeous with everything you need in the kitchen. The only thing that could have been better is the steps outside the doors by the parking spot could have been kept clear of algae. On a wet day it became very slippery causing a nasty muscle injury to my leg. The owners daughter assured me she would see it was cleaned but just be aware. The contact we had with the owners was friendly and they left a welcome of fizz and biscuits. We definitely recommend this property

  • "The Old Shippon is a wonderful house in a wonderful setting."

The house is equipped with everything one could need for a lovely holiday. The huge kitchen living room is stunning. It looks out on to the garden, giving beautiful views of the surrounding fields and hills. We spent much time, happily looking out at the wildlife that visited the field: Hares, many birds including birds of prey, sheep, a pair of pheasants and a cuckoo who called all day ( and night) during our stay - magical. Being located tucked away on the edge of a village, there is no sound or light pollution and we all all slept so well. The extremely comfortable beds helped with this, of course. A highlight of the holiday was a visit to the Flying Scotsman at Keighley Railway, a birthday treat for my husband. I have nothing but superlatives to describe the Old Shippon, and would thoroughly recommend it.

  • "We had an absolutely lovely stay."

Emma and Trevor had left us a very welcome bottle of wine, chocolates and milk in the fridge, so thoughtful. The radio, heating and lights were on so we felt at home straight away. All contact with Emma and Trevor was easy. The Old Shippon is beautiful with wonderful views from every window. We could happily have lived there! We have no real complaints, more observations. For us, although the two sofas are beautiful they were uncomfortable. There were no instructions for the heating although we did manage to work it out without bothering Emma. The showers could do with non slip bath mats and a chair and mirror in the smaller bedroom would be nice. We used the Nespresso machine once, again we couldn’t find instructions but we managed without. That said the property is exceptionally beautiful, the beds very comfortable, the showers fantastic and the kitchen is well equipped. If we had needed to we are positive Emma and Trevor would have helped and sorted any issues. Our observations are our opinions and didn’t detract from what was a fantastic stay. We hope to return in the future. Thank you to Emma and Trevor

The house itself is beautiful, spotlessly clean and well equipped with everything you could need for your stay. The settings are beautiful too, a fab view from back garden - we loved having our evening meal watching the sun go down over the hills. Couldn’t recommend this place more!

  • "A fabulous property, furnished to a very high standard."

Wonderful and dramatic views in a very peaceful location. Trevor was very helpful providing recommendations of places to eat. We really liked The Fleece Inn at Addingham and also found Aya Sophia in Hebden Bridge - a very good Greek Restaurant and lots of places in Ilkley. Lots of walking in the area but be prepared for a half an hour drive to most locations. Favourites were Bolton Abbey for the walks and tea rooms and Malham Cove for a more adventurous walk, although other less arduous options exist.

  • "We had an amazing stay at The Old Shippon."

Such a well-appointed place - we loved the kitchen (huge island!) with all its appliances and the bedrooms/bathrooms were luxurious. The super-king bed was incredible and I've had the best sleep of my life there. The views from the garden area are amazing and we were lucky with a week of incredible weather so sat out most evenings; so very quiet. Easy access to some brilliant places to visit including the Forest of Bowland, Haworth (a must for the Bronte Parsonage Museum), Bolton Abbey and even the Yorkshire Sculpture Park. Beware, though, lots of places not open on a Monday or a Tuesday, so check ahead if there's somewhere you really want to visit. We ate out at The Fleece in Addingham (lovely) and in a couple of pubs in Skipton. Would liked to have tried the Harlequin Bistro but failed to spot it wasn't open in the week; next time. We shall definitely be back in the winter to try enjoy a stay with the woodburner going and some fresh walks.

We simply love the place, The views, The finishing touches, The walks, we love it all. * I wanted to mention while you’re still reading - The super hosts listen to you feedback!! We have now got a nespresso machine with pods @ a dining table. They truly care and listen to all feedback. The hosts are so accommodating and helpful beyond words, They left special touches in the property for me and I’ll forever be grateful. The property is just simply stunning. Honestly! You need to see for yourself, The bed and pillows you’ll never want to leave. The radio when you walk in with smooth playing just sets the mood for a perfectly chilled week. I can’t rave enough how much I love this place. It’s worth every single penny. If you’re in love with nature the birds singing in a morning when you open up the windows is for you. Our little girl also took her first steps too first steps of many so it’s definitely got magic in the air too. Until next time the old shippon x ThankYou again. 5* as always.

  • "We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at The Old Shippon and appreciated our welcome tray with Prosecco and biscuits."

The cottage was very clean, well maintained and had great facilities. It was really spacious but still felt really cosy and warm. We felt at home straight away and just wished the weather was slightly warmer for use to sit out in the garden and admire the views. Parking was ample and we felt very safe. Communication with the owner/caretaker was good (just at the end of the phone) and instructions on how to access the place were clear. We thought that it might benefit future holidaymakers if there was a welcome folder that contained instructions for how to leave the cottage, appliance instructions, how to use the central heating (it was very hot downstairs in the evenings), places to visit, take away menus, restaurant recommendations, public transport info, etc. Although some of these things were provided, it would have been useful to have in one place. The cottage is in a great location, only an hour's drive from the Three Peaks, 25 minutes away from Haworth/Bronte Waterfalls, Pendle and Skipton. We were busy walking every day and even enjoyed the local walk to Lund's Tower and the Pinnacle. The countryside is tremendous and the views from the cottage were beautiful. There was plenty of space for storing our walking gear and thankfully the weather wasn't too wet, but it would have been handy to have a washing machine for muddy trousers. Overall a fantastic stay, thoroughly enjoyed it and would love to come back in the future. Thank you.

Well designed, spacious and very well equipped. However, my one comment which is quite an important one, is that it should have a washing machine. There are ample empty cupboards in the kitchen area and given that this is a walking area it is essential. We got very wet one afternoon whilst walking and everything had to be handwashed. A washing machine would have made the holiday 100% perfect. However, otherwise no complaints. Trevor was always prompt with replies to queries, the beds were particularly comfortable! A thoroughly good place to stay.

There was low lighting on and the under floor heating was fabulous. To have a bottle of Prosecco and yummy biscuits waiting for us was perfect. I was concerned we would have no ice for the gin and tonic I had brought with us but I needn’t have worried as not only was there a large bag in the freezer but there was an ice machine. It didn’t take us long to get the word burner going (everything there including the matches) and get snuggled down for a cosy evening. Getting up every morning and experiencing the amazing view......with the added bonus of Ollie, Emma and Trevor’s horse cantering across the field for his daily carrot/apple made it very special. Trevor and Emma are available and respond very quickly to any questions you may have. I definitely recommend this cottage if you are looking for a place of solitude but easy access to walks and sightseeing.

About the location

COWLING

Skipton 7 miles.

The ancient village of Cowling sits across a hillside in the Pennine Hills, just seven miles from the market town of Skipton. A thriving village, built along a main high street with stone-built, terraced houses set alongside the mills of a bygone age. The village was once sparsely populated, the bulk of the population living in Ickornshaw and Middleton, and before that on Cowling Hill, close to water sources they depended on, and the main roads of the day - now used as back roads by locals to avoid the modern day traffic. In the early days, agriculture was the main occupation, with corn being grown and ground within the village. When canal transport boomed, corn became cheaper to buy from elsewhere and so the mills in Cowling turned from grinding corn to weaving during the Industrial Revolution. The village inn was once part of a farmhouse on Cowling Hill, but was sold as changes to the structure of the village began. The son of the landlord later opened the Bay Horse Hotel on the new road, which still stands as a main feature of village life. The nearby Quaker village of Lothersdale was, at one time, home to Charlotte Bronte who modelled Gateshead Hall in Jane Eyre on Stone Gappe House where she was governess. Today many visitors passing through the village are walkers, on their way along the Pennine Way on the stretch from Cowling to Gargrave. There's the large retail outlet of Boundary Mills, just six miles away, a must for lovers of shoping, and Skipton, known as 'The Gateway to the Dales' is nearby. Skipton is a lovely old market town with much to interest the enthusiastic visitor, boasting an ancient castle open to the public, a beautiful old parish church and a colourful market occupying the cobbled setts each side of the high street. In 2008 the Academy of Urbanism voted Skipton High Street the best shopping spot in Britain, and The Copper Dragon Brewery, opened in 2002 is highly rated in the CAMRA listings. Steam railways with regular excursions are available at Embsay and Bolton Abbey, and the Leeds to Liverpool Canal passes through Skipton with the one mile long Foulridge Tunnel and the 5-rise locks at Bingley within a short distance away. In 2014 the area hosted the first leg of the Tour De France, bringing in many visitors from far and wide to this wonderful area.
