  • "Overall a nice little holiday rental that is in need of an update."

We felt the kitchen let it down - in need of a deep clean.

  • "We enjoyed our stay in this beautiful area."

The property was comfortable and the kitchen was well-equipped. We would have appreciated some things that were omitted, but that are generally expected nowadays: - pillow protectors - soap in the bathroom - washing-up liquid - a hand towel each so that we can wash our hair - some milk and a few teabags

  • "Clean and tidy."

Great wi-fi for the kids, which isn't usually very good generally in holiday cottages, in our experience. Well placed for days out in York, Whitby, Scarborough etc. Eden Camp was particularly good to visit. Plenty of towels and lovely bedding, very comfortable beds and pillows. Good local pub very close by and just beyond that, after the houses, a good walk. Only slight criticism, if any, would be that a small welcome tray would be beneficial with some tea/coffee, small pint of milk. A loo roll would also have be good just while people get settled before going for a shop. We've had a tray in every other place we have stayed and for a small outlay it makes a huge difference after a long drive. However, I would highly recommend Gateside, and would definitely stay again.

Thank you for your feedback. We are pleased that you enjoyed your stay and we would love to welcome you back in the future. The welcome pack should have included tea, coffee and a toilet roll. I am sorry this was not the case - we will follow up on this immediately. Property Owner

  • "This was a beautiful cottage and the owner was very helpful and friendly."

My only problem was at the top of the stairs as my mobility is poor and I rely on handrails to manage this meant my swinging like a monkey to get from room to room.

  • "I’m sure there are better holiday rentals than this …."

. … but to date, we’ve not found one. As far as I’m concerned this is one of, if not the, best we’ve rented in over 25 years. We have a budget of around £1,000 for two weeks, and this came in close enough. The layout was great: three bedrooms and a bathroom downstairs, and a large lounge, and fully equipped kitchen upstairs. The lounge was very comfortable, and the kitchen was first class. It’s set in a very quiet village (just a pub, no shops) and it’s so quiet at night you’re guaranteed a good night’s sleep. The owner, Ian, responded quickly to my questions, and dealt with them satisfactorily. If in the future Gateside is around our budget we shall certainly be returning.

Thank you Michael, we are so pleased that you enjoyed your stay at Gateside. We look forward to welcoming you back in the future. Property Owner

Really handy location within reach of the moors, coast and York. Quick communication from the owners over a couple of minor practical questions. Well pleased.

  • "We had a very pleasant stay, clean and very comfortable home."

we were able to walk to Levisham rail station every morning to catch the steam train for a days walking .Round about a 30 minute walk to station but very muddy walk at the moment. Only moan was that we could not get a meal at the village pub as it was not serving food when we were there but the kitchen in the cottage was very well equipped,so it was not a problem. A good location if you like walking.

We are delighted that you enjoyed your stay and the local walking. Thank you for your feedback. Property Owner

Shame the local pub has stopped doing food though as it meant trips out so no drink and drive.

  • "Arrived at a dirty house."

Informed Sykes straight away and took photos, as per Sykes' complaints policy. Sykes arranged a cleaner for day 6 of our stay and said I could be out as long as I left a key. I checked this twice to be sure! So I did give permission for the cleaner to enter and left out the spare key as Sykes requested. We arrived back to no clean having been done, and a message from the owner that the cleaner went but needed us to let them in. Amazing customer service right there! Spent over £700 of hard earned money to stay in a dirty house, didn't get it resolved due to Sykes being beyond useless and a month on they haven't refunded me the agreed % either. This is what Sykes say on their leave feedback page: We pass on all our guests feedback to our owners and work closely with them in order to resolve any problems. In our experience this is not the case and I wouldn't recommend booking using them. Have made over 20 calls to Sykes to try to sort this out. They just don't care - I would much have preferred to have been in direct contact with the owners to discuss but they state in the welcome folder no contact details and to liaise with Sykes. A really poor choice I believe. Just as a point to note - we actually had to clean the house ourselves when we arrived as it was so dirty, we could not stay in it in the condition of our arrival. There were thick, established cobwebs in the bedrooms and bathroom, spiders in every room, gross toothbrush holders in the bathroom and the lounge floor had a layer of hair covering it all over. Sykes stated to me in a message online: 'The cleaner has been in touch with regard to the pictures you sent and is sorry that more cobwebs seem to have appeared as she did not notice any when she left the prop before your stay. Apologies the bottom of the toothbrush holder had also been missed.' Absolutely stay clear if you want a stress free week away in a clean house.

We are disappointed to receive these comments which are in contrast to feedback received from previous guests, including those who stayed the week before. We were at the property 10 days beforehand and it was clean and not as has been described here. We reviewed the photographs which were close ups of a small number of cobwebs. Our cleaner confirmed that the property was cleaned ahead of arrival - we recognise that cobwebs can form quickly in an old cottage in a rural setting. When contacted about this, we offered to send the cleaner to the property and received no response. We offered again and asked the cleaner to attend but there was no one there to provide access and we had not received permission via Sykes for the cleaner to enter in the guests’ absence. It would have been possible to make direct contact with us as our details are provided to guests and we had emailed prior to arrival to confirm the availability of a travel cot. As a gesture of goodwill, a partial refund was provided. Property Owner

Quiet village setting, easy to park and close to the small town of Pickering. The property is clean and in good repair, the kitchen is well stocked with everything you need, and the heating boost ensures that it quickly warms up on a chilly morning.
