  • "Dovecote is a very comfortable, clean and pleasant cottage to enjoy a break in."

We always enjoy our stay there, and we've been four times, and hope to go again. Everything is spick and span, and our needs are met with plenty of lovely white towels, pots and pans, dishwasher, fridge, washing machine and microwave. There is also a toaster and kettle. Furnishings are very comfortable. We usually go in November, but are never cold in Dovecote, it is always kept toasty and warm. The owners are very friendly and approachable and are happy for us to contact them for any queries or problems.

The cottage is smack bang in the middle of all points of interest, local walks, the steam railway, shops,,food outlets, and of course local pubs and they are dog friendly. Dovecot cottage itself is quiet with amazing views from the sunny patio, the interior space is decorated to a high standard, beds are super comfy, modern kitchen and bathrooms, large TV with all channels plus Dvds in the upstairs lounge can't find any negatives and the hosts are pretty cool.

Quaint, quirky and very tastefully refurbished by owners Stuart and Sarah who are great hosts! Dovecote is tucked away on a quiet ginnel within 2 mins walk of Pickering town centre and the North Yorkshire Steam engine railway which can take you all the way to Whitby which whateer the weather is highly recommended. It has a lovely patio which gets the sun for most of the day....ideal for al fresco dining and a nice glass of wine! Despite its location Dovecote provides a quiet and totally relaxing stay for anyone wanting to chill and escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life. We would recommend Dovecote to friends and family and would certainly stay there again if ever returning to Pickering.

The cottage has all the mod cons you will need. Everything is spotless and well maintained. There are lovely, fluffy white towels in the bathroom and shower room, lovely handwash too. The upstairs lounge is extremely comfortable, with two large sofas and a "reading" chair. Plenty of books and games, and of course a TV and WiFi. The kitchen is very well equipped and very modern, with a dining room off it. Plenty of nice crockery and cutlery. The cottage itself has lots of character, and is a 5 minute walk to the centre of Pickering which is a lovely market town with plenty of facilities, and of course boasts the North Yorkshire railway with steam trains running in the season, and for special occasions too. The hosts of Dovecote are very welcoming and nothing is too much trouble. We will be back!!

  • "Parking - nightmare !"

Steps in cottage all uneven from utility to kitchen and no hand rail. Hall way uneven floor. very dangerous an uneven trip hazard into the e suit bedroom. Steps to front door inside were massive we used the back door out of kitchen to prevent an accident. The hill outside the property itself was not a problem if you took your time to dodge the fallen apples which made it very slippy. Horrendous smell in main bathroom - like a Tom cats spray !! The damp smell in the bedrooms was overpowering. We had to leave doors and windows open day and night. The fridge is in the utility room and the kettle is down the stairs as is the cups?? Random we thought ?? We moved the kettle and the toaster to the utility for or stay. It’s a shame because the property was clean enough. The equipment was good. The upstairs sitting room was really comfortable. We didn’t enjoy the scale up the stairs. Thought they were pretty dangerous too.

Thank you for your feedback. As a period property we worked very hard to maintain the original features. This is why we make it clear in our description that the cottage is not suitable for those with mobility issues and parking is on street only. We will review the description to see if this can be improved. As you did not draw any smells to our attention when we spoke during your stay we were unable to check this. We have never had any complaints regarding smells. Property Owner

  • "We had a lovely stay at Dovecote, this was our second time here and we will definitely be back."

It is in a fabulous location for visiting the many places that surround Pickering. Plenty to see and do, the coast isn’t far at all, we went to Whitby for dinner and it was about a twenty minute drive. Filey is also not far and has an array of shops and a beautiful beach. The steam railway is a stones throw from the cottage and takes you into Whitby. We spent a day in Scarborough on the north beach which was beautiful and a scorcher! All in all a truly lovely holiday.

  • "Great location, lovely and private, parked the car on the road above about 100 ft away and we carried bits down the incline to the holiday let."

We had absolutely no issue with this whatsoever. Parked up Sunday afternoon and never touched the car again until we left on Wednesday evening, as we walked or used the Coastliner, a 5minute walk to the 840/843 stop which took us to Whitby, Thornton Le Dale, Malton and Dalby Forest and the 128 from Pickering Coop to Scarborough. £2 a journey until the end of March. PERFECT!!! Relaxing stay, garden secluded and had open views over the train station. A very good range of shops and eateries and local pubs if you searched for them, which we did. The church is wonderful and always open to visit. The upstairs living space in the holiday let is perfect, where we watched sunsets, through the window. The building is very warm and snuggly, we turned the heating down and opened doors but we are used to being cool rather than wanting to be overheated, the choice is yours and the Hive can be switched to support this. Only ideas - A comfy chair in the dining area , if space allows , may make for a lovely reading space but I suppose this is available upstairs so maybe unnecessary, a few more hooks on doors and possibly set of drawers in one of the bedrooms rather than the open hanging area but it works for short stays without a doubt. Plenty of games and books to read and films. The tv is adequate but if you are used to large screens you may be a tad disappointed but not a big issue as there is lots to do besides watch Tv. The owners next door leave you to it and have tried really hard to ensure maximum privacy for clients which is noted and appreciated. We did wonder if the mattress on the bed was a combination soft side and hard side which if it is maybe needs to be mentioned in the brochure. We had a fabulous time, we stayed 3 nights and we could have potentially done a week, as didn't get to try all the eateries. We did give all the pubs a good crack and they were all pretty decent, the food at the Black Swan looked great and it’s so cosy inside and the staff friendly. The Bay Horse was great when it opened more traditional for locals. The Rose inn was friendly and had a lovely outside seating area near to the river / stream. The Sun has had refurb and again a local, but we felt welcome enough. The recently refurbed sports gin bar was excellent friendly and a lovely setting, can imagine that being a very busy venue at the weekends. Lots of lovely cafes Russell’s smashing but again loads to go at. We had a brilliant stay and would highly recommend and will definitely be returning.

  • "We stayed at dovecote the same week last year and were very excited to be going back, however, we were very disappointed with our stay this year."

We contacted Sykes prior to our arrival to ask for the second bedroom to be made into a double for for bedding to be left for the sofa bed. This is because our 2 teenage children (1 boy, 1girl) wanted to have privacy. However when we arrived the bed had been made into a double but no bedding had been left for the sofa bed, which left us with a worse situation because they definitely couldn’t share a bed! My daughter had to make do with blankets. The mattress in the master bedroom is awful, incredibly soft (very saggy) and we had to swap with my son as it gave us both a bad back after 1 night. We actually came home a day early as it was giving my son a bad back too. I had to clean the worktops and crockery when we arrived as they were dirty. We had to hoover the sofa bed as it was disgusting to then find the hoover hadn’t been emptied in what looked like months and wasn’t picking anything up. The toilet seat in the en-suite was loose and the toilet flush handle in the main bathroom worked (just) but felt like it had broken. Incredibly disappointing, it felt like dovecote had zero maintenance since our last stay which is a real shame as it’s a beautiful cottage which is well located. I felt like I left the cottage cleaner when we left than when we arrived. Unfortunately we won’t be going back for a third year

We had to ask 3 people before we could find the property. The property is on a very steep hill and was not suitable for my father who has mobility problems. Not suitable for wheelchair users. Although the cottage is beautiful and furnished to a high standard. Again, inside it is not suitable for people with walking/mobility issues because of the number of steps up and down! We feel you need to revise how you advertise this cottage. Also, it described off road parking at the cottage and there isn't.

Thank you for your feedback. Due to the propertys unique location we understand it may be difficult to find. We have taken this on board and amended the details. The pictures show clearly the positioning of the property also along with the path which is on a hill. The details have also been checked and the property has never stated it has off road parking, it states free on road parking. The property has also not been advertised as being wheelchair friendly.
