  • "We had a wonderful stay in a lovely house in a brilliant central location."

However when we arrived on a cold November night, we found that there was no hot water or heating. After some time investigating and trying to reset the boiler, I discovered that the gas meter was on a prepayment card!!! A quick walk to the local Co-op and I was able to put £10 0n the card. However this only lasted until the next morning as £3 of this was used to pay an emergency use arrears. We found this a little annoying as I then had to put another £30 on the card, which lasted until our departure. The description on the site originally stated that fuel was included in the rental. In other rental cottages there was usually an owner contact number. In this case, not. It would have been nice to have one to sort this problem earlier. Otherwise a lovely stay. One final point we could not find any cutlery at all. So we bought some very cheap cutlery locally. We did not want to leave a bad review and are only reporting this to ensure the next guests don't have the same problems. We would stay here again.

  • "I booked the cottage for my daughter & partner as an Engagement surprise, the cottage itself was beautiful but on arrival it was obvious it had not been cleaned after the last people who stayed hence the score I have left."

There was dirty bedding in a heap on both bedroom floors, dirty towels in both bedrooms & bathroom, the bath, sink & shower were filthy with soap scum & the chrome taps full of toothpaste spittle, the bathroom bin had a used period pad inside. I sent my daughter & partner to a nearby restaurant where we had booked a table for us ALL, I missed out on the meal because it was obvious Sykes were not sending a cleaner. I cleaned the bathroom & kitchen, hoovered the stairs, made the beds & moved the last occupiers dirty linen & towels. I tried to contact Sykes numerous on the number provided but only got through to an answer machine. The next day (Monday) I’d still had no contact from Sykes so I rang again, the person I spoke to said that I couldn’t raise a complaint until after the stay. I still have not resolved the matter or had an apology, as stated this was my daughter’s Engagement surprise, it should have been perfect instead I have had the stress of cleaning a full cottage, missing out on the meal I had booked & countless phone calls waiting for an answer from Sykes. • "Terrible, ground floor stinks so bad you have to hold your breath to pass it!"

The damp can still be smelt on the first floor where there is also black mould growing on the walls, the location is good but I still wouldn’t recommend this to anyone, I don’t know how no one has mentioned this! I can only imagine it is only friends and family that have left reviews.

  • "We have just returned from a 4 night stay at 9 Victoria Rd, Richmond."

The property is situated on a busyish main road, just round the corner from the centre of town, within easy reach of all tourist sites, such as the waterfalls and the castle ,shops and good restaurants. We dined at the Cocina Little Drummer Boy on the second evening- highly recommended and authentic tapas served. We also dined at the Italian restaurant just down the road- La Piazza, again very nice. The house itself is well laid out and furnished to a high standard, with a colour palate I liked. We used the downstairs office as a cloakroom, which was handy, and as a place where our dog slept in his bed at night. We liked the open plan kitchen and lounge which is on the top floor- very comfortable. The double room is on the first floor, opposite the bathroom and the king bedroom is on the ground floor.- good sized rooms. If you stay in winter, please be aware that the house is very cold when the central heating is not switched on. There is a pre-paid meter in the downstairs toilet, which the owner text us details about how to load more credit onto the card (which the owner refunded)- these instructions about where credit could be obtained (Post Office in the high street, Coop in town or the local garage just up the road) could be included in the info booklet . We were a bit chilly in the night when the heating was off, and had to hunt around to find an extra duvet. Maybe the location of extra blankets/ duvets could also have been detailed in the info booklet. However, there was a booklet with all instructions about how to switch on the boiler and other appliances, which we found helpful. We cooked a couple of evenings and found the kitchen to be well kitted out. It would have been good to be aware that things like extra toilet rolls were not provided. We loved the bathroom, apart from the water from the shower going onto soak the floor- a potential slip hazard. The design of the shower cubicle glass doors aren't really fit for purpose. Maybe the owner might consider having full doors installed so that water doesn't escape onto the wooden floor each time someone has a shower. I would recommend making any potential holidays renters aware that the property does not have a garden- I think that if you were to stay in the summer months, particularly with small children and dogs, this might be an issue. We didn't find the lack of garden a problem though, as I took my dog to the local part just 2 minutes walk down the road. We had to pay for car parking (£15 per car to cover the stay) as the space round the back was too small for our cars. Storm Gerrit was in full swing all the time we were visiting- maybe the post box on the outside of the property could be secured as it did disturb us in the high gales in the night. However, despite this, overall, we really enjoyed our stay.

  • "Really lovely accommodation bit disappointed that there was no off road parking as this was advertised on first page of website."

Could not understand why boiler was switched off as the place was freezing cold and took a few hours to heat up. I thought the cleaner would have switched it on ready for our arrival. After saying this I would definitely book this property again as I now know exactly the correct information. Absolutely brilliant location.

  • "Nice spacious property, well-stocked kitchen."

Very clean. Very comfy beds and top floor area very nice and light. Only 3 caveats. 1. Parking not available and car park next door only 2 hours. Paid 50p to unload stuff and then drove around to find on-street parking on Quakers Lane. Paying £15 for a week in long stay park is not much use if you are there for only 2 nights. Worth it for a week. Also you need to download an app to pay this. Be prepared for all this on arrival. 2. Dubious drains smell sometimes on ground floor. From study or downstairs toilet - esp 2nd evening when we ran the dishwasher. Perhaps needs looking into? Small cafetiere is broken (glass). We didn't do this. 3. Saturday night music from some local bar (?) meant bass line thumping went on until 1 am. Owner may not know about this. Otherwise very good central location for the town.

  • "Hall light did not work."

We put a different bulb in it but it still did not work. This will be a problem for winter lettings when people arrive back and it is dark. Second lot of stairs were too steep for our dog. She could get up but not down so husband had to carry her (just the once). It was very precarious as dog is a greyhound and stairs are steep. After that she had to stay on the ground floor (we decamped from 1st floor bedroom to the one downstairs) which was not ideal. Please state in description that some dogs may not manage the second set of stairs because they are steep. Toilet seat in bathroom still loose. On the plus side: excellent position, cosy, bed on ground floor very comfortable.

Hi thanks for your comments . I don’t know what is happening with the light as when we went along to check it was working ! Oh your poor dog ! Our whippets seem to manage the stairs ok ( even our 15 year old whippet ) . Perhaps it’s because your doggie has very long legs . Sorry about that . Property Owner

We travelled with 2 young children and coverted the ground floor study for our baby, great WiFi also for the baby camera, although you will need to bring your own Crib etc. The first floor provides the main bathroom and in our opinion the best bedroom for adults, although the ground floor bedroom offers a double bed and would easily be suitable for adults also, this was just our preference. The living room area on the 3rd floor is a large space and was perfect our family, overall this should be and is a top choice for Richmond, 5 stars all the way!

Hi thank you so much for your kind comments . It’s lovely to see people appreciating all of the hard work that went into renovating the place . Glad you had a great time . Property Owner

  • "The holiday house was fantastic!"

As we were there for 3 weeks we really appreciated the lovely light kitchen, dining & living area on the top floor. The views over the cricket ground and beyond the Friary Tower were lovely. The bathroom was great and the bedrooms were very comfortable. The kitchen had everything we needed for our stay, including a dishwasher and washing machine (which isn't mentioned in the property details). The house is really well located in the heart of Richmond, with the Market Place only a few minutes' walk away, and many lovely walks around the castle walls, the river and the old station. I would certainly recommend the property and would love to stay again.

Few things need attention- nothing major - blind pulls, dead batteries in remotes but otherwise everything was very good , clean, comfortable and central

Hi Thankyou for telling us about the remotes etc . We will tell the housekeeping staff . We are constantly repairing the blind pulls as guests are sometimes heavy handed . They are in good working order again now . We did our best with the courtyard at development stage . Maybe it could be developed further in the future . Property Owner

  • "We loved staying here."

Very cosy. Great location. Short walk to town centre. The car parking space suited our car which is a peugeot 207cc. 4010mm or 13ft 2inches long All interior fittings in ghe house are modern and clean. The very minor niggles do not stop me giving this place maximum rating. On arrival, found the radiators turned up to max , which was very welcoming. However the thermostatic valve in the lounge by the tv was adrift . I mamaged to refit it eventually. Would revommend future users to adjust it gently. Both toilet seats had worked loose over time. They just need lifting off and the bolts tightened. A couple of the roller blinds are missing their plastic adjusting chains. Would quite happily return.

  • "Stayed at 9 Victoria road over Christmas upon arrival the first thing we noticed was the cloakroom/snug seems to be a dumping area for old fixtures and fittings, blinds and cardboard boxes which is not ideal."

the next negative is the amount of cobwebs in a freshly prepared property. the beds are comfortable and the facilities are of a good standard but BEWARE the car park at this side of the property which you can park in and buy a weekly pass through the Ringo app but I received a PARKING TICKET for this as the car park is maximum stay 2 hours even though Ringo app sells you the parking you are illegally parked so BEWARE also the parking bay at the rear of the property will only take a very small car. But regardless of the negatives location is excellent as was Richmond which we enjoyed.

Nunn Street car park is 100 yards away and provides weekly parking permits. The charge was £15 last time we checked. Noted re the snug area and we will address this. Glad you enjoyed your stay otherwise Property Owner

The town is just around the corner with numerous pubs, places to eat and shops. Victoria Road is comfy and homely and has an amazing bathroom. The beds are comfy and it has the luxury feel of a hotel but in your own place. I can highly recommend Elixir for food ( huge portion sizes) and for an Indian takeaway Amontola, both are within walking distance.

  • "The house was gorgeous & the location was fantastic."

There was no cutlery at the house except one fork and 2 knives. We had to go & buy some. There was absolutely no toilet roll left which we actually forgot to bring so one of us had to dash out & get some. You should make people aware the cost of the car parking next to the property, There is no room for one car at the rear of the property & there is a No Parking sign there anyway. It took us ages to get the tv on - we can only assume the batteries in the remote required new ones but we ended up having to tune the tv in every time we put it on as it was only picking up the signal for BBC1 The stay was lovely though, these negatives are easily fixed obviously with the exception of the parking fees. We would return, the stay was comfortable and the house is beautiful.

  • "Great location for our stay in Richmond, easy to access and a few short minutes from the market square."

We had plenty of space and the kitchen on the top floor is ideal for relaxing and entertaining. We had an issue with the door lock, not working correctly, however quickly resolved by Abi who was managing the house and couldn’t have been more helpful. There’s a little noise from the road but it’s not too much on a evening. Great places in the square to eat and drink, definitely go to Hamiltons butchers for the best bacon and meats in the area, exlir for food is perfect and delicious, possibly the biggest portion sizes we’ve ever seen!!! Another lovely stay in Richmond and we would definitely book again.

Main issue was the front door easy to lock and open from outside. Nightmare to open from in side. Didn't realise was on such a busy road. Perhaps info needs updating. Also something about the parking when we got there it had a no parking sign. When we rang we were told we could park there fortunately we had a small enough car. This needs updating so people can have change for the car park

About the location

RICHMOND

Barnard Castle 10 miles; Leyburn 12 miles.

Situated at the entrance to Swaledale, the ancient market town of Richmond stands on a prominent hilltop site to the north of the River Swale. Its cobbled streets and narrow alleys or 'wynds' enshrine over nine centuries of busy history and unique character. The town grew up around its castle, a Norman fortress dating back to 1071, famously situated high above the river - indeed the name Richmond is derived from 'Riche-mont' meaning 'strong hill'. Today there are wonderful walks to be enjoyed such as the Castle Walk - a dramatic terrace walk beneath the castle walls - or alternatively walk alongside the River Swale where there are parks, safe paddling areas and small waterfalls to enjoy. Within the town, narrow streets and alleys radiate from the cobbled Market Place (which has a weekly market and monthly farmers’ market) and there are numerous shops, pubs and restaurants to enjoy. The town flourished in the 18th and 19th centuries and the resulting elegant Georgian architecture lines many of the old streets. The Georgian Theatre is one of the oldest surviving theatres in the country with visitors enjoying its regular productions all year round.
