  • "We loved Foxy Cottage, particularly it's rural setting in Ripley."

We looked out onto fields with horses, sheep and a pig. And in the courtyard we loved the acrobatic barn swallows. The cottage itself is cosy, beautiful and tastefully decorated. Ripley is an interesting village with an excellent bus service to Ripon and Harrowgate.

It was very tranquil - and provided a good base for a variety of activities - we enjoyed ourselves immensely and were somewhat sad to have to return home at the end of our stay!

  • "Stunning wee cottage in a delightful village."

Well equipped and the courtyard was a sun trap. The small village is well served by the 36 bus north to Ripon and south to Harrogate. The owner Hannah checked in with us a few times and couldn’t be more attentive. A very peaceful break and a highlight was watching the horses and Arthur the pig in the field in front of the cottage.

  • "First off, we had a lovely week at Foxy cottage despite the mixed weather."

Because of the excellent Sykes website and the photographs therein, the cottage lived up to the expectations. It is a beautiful, comfortable cottage in a pretty village. The cottage was reasonably well equipped with utensils, pans and cleaning materials etc, however we left some feedback on a couple of possible improvements. I found the beds comfortable and the rooms reasonably spacious with enough storage space for a week or so. The ‘Boot Room’ was useful but there was limited space for boots and shoes because it is in effect a storage cupboard for high chairs, irons, mops and hoover etc. On arrival the cottage was clean (initial impression) with a lovely welcome pack and cute hearts on the toilet roll for example. Every individual has differing standards of cleanliness and, as I said, initially the cottage appeared clean but throughout the week we discovered areas that could have been improved, cooker, oven and extractor hood, dusty skirting boards etc. This is a 5* cottage and for the most part I would agree, although 4.5* would be more accurate. Parking is not possible at the cottage. We were fortunate that the nearby parking at the end of the lane was available and we did not require the use of the large village car park. This is mentioned in the cottage details. That said, looking on the positives, we really did have a wonderful holiday in the cottage. I would definitely recommend it for a couple or small family. The location close to tourist attractions and 3 towns with facilities is another bonus.

Thank you for your feeeback for Foxy Cottage. On your recommendation we have added to the property a whisk, mixing bowl amd weighing scales as requested and considering providing an air fryer. I am pleased to hear you had an enjoyable stay. Property Owner

Lovely cosy property in a beautiful village. No private garden, but a sitting out area in the courtyard backing on to the cottages. We would stay again. Generous welcome pack.

  • "What a lovely cottage located in the quiet, but beautiful village of Ripley."

The cottage listing was very accurate and came with all the stuff we needed for the week (towels, dishwasher tabs, hand gel, washing up liquid, sugar, coffee etc.) - unfortunately no tea bags, but we brought our own so all OK. The beds were very comfy, and the lounge and dining room were nice spaces to relax in during the evening. Views over the field with horses, sheep etc. was lovely. We brought Amazon Firesticks for the TV’s which worked well and the Wi-Fi was fine. Car parking was at the end of the lane and we had no issues with this throughout our stay. Ripley itself was lovely and the kids loved the play area in the village. The Ripley Store is great for the essentials (bread, milk etc.) and they sell amazing pies, sausage rolls and pastries. The Ripley Ice Cream was a real highlight. Near Ripley there is a large Morrisons near Ripon for the larger shop at the beginning of your week. Within 10 miles of Ripley there is so much to see and do, our favourites were Brimham Rocks, Fountains Abbey, Ripon Cathedral, Pateley Bridge and Knaresborough. We also spent a day visiting York and this was great, visit the Minster and do the guided tour. Finally, the bus service is ideal if you do not wish to drive everywhere and runs regularly through Ripley to Leeds, Harrogate and Ripon. We had a great stay and very much recommend.

  • "Overall, we have very much enjoyed our stay."

It's a beautiful cottage, good interior design elements, well equipped and in a fabulous location. With a little attention, if could easily score excellent rather than very good. As a constructive criticism, the following should be actioned. The small planted area around the entrace door is overgrown with weeds, and the front door needs repainting. (one never gets a second chance to make a good first impression.)The whole cottage needs a serious 'deep' clean, as there is months worth of dust in areas such as base of electric fires, over ornaments and inside drawers. Seat cushions are needed for the dining chairs because they are too low for the dining table. The sheets could be better quality. Second handrail very much needed. ( as mentioned numerous times in visitors book- stairs steep with narrow treads) All the interior window frames are thick with black mould. If these things were dealt with, this cottage could easily be one of the best.

Thank you very much for your feedback for Foxy Cottage. I am pleased to hear you have had an enjoyable stay and enjoyed the cottage and it's special location. I very much appreciate your comments. These have now been actioned and we look forward to welcoming you in the future at Foxy Cottage, Ripley. Property Owner

Next to a field with horses and a few rare breed sheep. With rabbits bouncing around early evening. A true 'miss marple' cottage with a decent size kitchen diner and a stable door, which opens to a shared courtyard. 3 tvs and 3 toilets. A short walk to a pub. Homemade icecream shop and butchers minutes away. Fabulous bus service to Harrogate and Ripon.

It has everything you need for a relaxing stay. The welcome pack was great. The village is interesting and there is lots to do in the surrounding area. The only thing I would suggest is some form of security light - as it was winter it was often quite dark on our return making it difficult to see the lock. Overall an excellent stay.

Thank you for your lovely feedback and pleased you had an enjoyable stay. The cottage has 2 outside lights over the front door with a wall switch to operate. Hope you visit us in Yorkshire again. Property Owner

  • "The staircase tread was somewhat narrow and the staircase a bit steep and as my wife and I are in our eighties we found ascending and descending difficult and as a result I strongly suggest a handrail be attached to the left hand side,(ascending,) to match the one on the right."

As a retired Health and Safety Inspector I have investigated a number of incidents because of the lack of this type of safety equipment. May I also suggest that a handrail be fitted to all showers and over all baths to aid guests into and out of these facilities should they slip.

The furnishings and fittings were of a high standard. Kitchen flowed very well which is important for us. Beautiful views at the front of the house and enjoyed watching the horses, sheep and rabbits over breakfast. We had several meals on the rear patio which was very attractive and well-kept. Small but decorated to a very high standard with everything you need to enjoy your stay. Immaculate decor - felt like we were the first to ever stay there (perhaps we were?) To the front you overlook a field with horses and lots of rabbits in the evening. A courtyard to the back which is open to the back of the other cottages so not suitable for children to play. Ripley is a delightful village - definitely try the ice cream - worth queuing for. Harrogate was gorgeous as always too.

Thank you for your lovely feedback. You were our second guests to stay in Foxy Cottage. I am pleased you enjoyed your stay and the lovely setting of the cottage within the Ripley village. There is a fabulous play area at the top on the Main Street.....hope you discovered it when you had your delicious ice creams! Property Owner

About the location

RIPLEY

Harrogate 4 miles.

The village of Ripley in Lower Nidderdale, situated on the leeward side of the Yorkshire Dales, was designed and built, by Sir William Amcotts Ingleby in the 1830's. Sir William was so inspired by a model estate village he saw on a visit to France, that he came home and demolished the existing buildings in Ripley, beginning again from scratch to a classic French design. Today, the village is small and unspoilt and boasts a beautiful Castle in the centre (still home to the Ingleby family) with extensive gardens open to the public which include waterfalls, bridges and a lake. Deer graze in the grounds and there is a shop and tea-rooms within the Castle. The village has a large cobbled market place in the centre, overlooked by the Boar's Head - an old coaching inn which offers an excellent restaurant, bar and bistro. There is a village store and ice cream parlour where visitors can enjoy the very popular Ripley ice cream, along with a butcher’s, art gallery and much more.
