  • "A beautiful cottage in an ideal setting Very well equipped with lots of attractive personal touches Light and bright A good garden the dogs loved it!"

So nice to lie in bed and hear the sea and get up to a warm cosy room However after the 3rd day there was no heating and we werent allowed to alter the controls! This is poor as in other cheaper properties including caravans we have had heating available as required The dryer on the washer- dryer wasnt working We took home damp washing Also the freezing compartment in the fridge was completely frozen up In the bathroom a grab handle is needed for safely getting in and out of the bath also a thicker and less slippery mat in the bath However these things can easily be put right and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay Loved the naughtical decor and the general feel of the cottage Also loved Sandsend and the beach and the valley and the eateries it all exceeded expectations Wish we were all back there ! Thank you for your lovely comments regarding Rigg Cottage. I am so sorry to hear that you thought there was no heating after 3 days, The heating is mains gas so is available 24 hours a day and set on constant. You just need to control the temperature by the thermostat at the bottom of the stairs. It probably needed turning up if you had been lighting the fire. What a shame. New fridge now ordered and dryer will be fixed. Property Owner

  • "Lovely cottage in an excellent location."

Very comfortable and well equipped. Bed good sized and very comfortable. Good quality linens and towels. Heating available and efficient. Kitchen very well equipped. A few minor decorative issues (plaster off in patch in one bedroom, bath panel secured by tape, odd place needing lick of paint) but nothing which impaired enjoyment of the property. A loo brush in the bathroom would have been useful. We were amused to discover dozens of DVDs but no DVD player evident. Realistically this property is perfect for 2 adults but would be very much a squash for 5 people. Highly recommended and would certainly use again.

Thank you for your kind feedback. DVD player must have been taken away with the old television. Apologies, it will be replaced. Property Owner

  • "Pro’s - location, garden to sit out, parking."

Con’s - house generally not clean, garden / driveway unkempt, house shabby in general and not well looked after; eg previous reviews April 23 and May 24 note issues still not rectified (bath panel / plaster above radiator in bedroom). Property really needs total refurbishment to bring up to a level where it can justify the current rental price: indeed, we have now booked a property nearby for the same week next year, better location and recently renovated, for a lesser amount. Unless the owners are willing to invest in improving the property, I think Rigg Cottage will struggle to compete with others on the market. Also during our stay, there were two properties next door but one either side undergoing building / extension work, so the street was busy and noisy with workmen from around 7.30/8.00 in the morning, and overlooking the garden in the afternoon, so not ideal. Will not be returning, sorry.

  • "Very pleased with Rigg Cottage (and Sandsend generally)."

A minor fault in the bathroom was rectified very quickly and efficiently, which gives us confidence that should anything go wrong on a subsequent visit the response would be similarly good. Some instructions on how to operate the TV would have been useful, as everything seemed to be internet based rather than through an antenna. Definitely considering another visit.

Thank you for your kind feedback. I noticed that there was a new plug in the bath so I presume this was the problem and I'm glad it got quick attention. I am afraid that the television is brand new and apparently they do not come with instruction books these days! It usually works the normal way, perhaps the previous guests moved it onto the internet setting. I hope you will return. Property Owner

Great that there were so many kitchen utensils. Gorgeous peaceful garden with plenty of seating. Would definitely book this property again. There are no grocery shops in walking distance of the property so a small amount of milk, tea bags and coffee (maybe just sachets even) would have been a nice welcome after a long journey.

Thank you so much for your kind feedback and that you also enjoyed the cottage garden at the back too. I note what you say about the coffee and tea bags. An excellent idea, thank you. Property Owner

  • "Property was dirty on arrival all cups glasses and bowls had to be washed before use as were covered in hair and dirt."

Bedroom two had a leak from the ceiling when the toilet was flushed. There was a lot of hair all around the property. The sofas were covered in dark throws which were also covered in hair and didn’t look like the photos at all. It looked generally tired and a bit neglected with weeds in the front and rear garden and the bathroom tap leaked if it wasn’t turned really tight. Radiators were really dirty and there was no wardrobe to hang clothes - the chest of drawers for your clothes was in the kitchen rather than the bedroom and you had to inch your way around the bed as the bed was too big for the room which made getting ready a bit tricky. We didn’t report issues as just wanted to get on and enjoy our stay as best we could without people having to come in and fix things. Sandsend was really beautiful, great beach, places to eat and friendly people but I wouldn’t stay in this property again.

Thank you for your feedback. I am sorry that you found issues with the cleanliness. This is very rare and we will make sure that housekeeping is informed of the points you have raised. Had you reported your concerns whilst at the property your complaints would have been addressed. Property Owner

Very clean with nice bedding and towels. There were however a few things that's need sorting out: -lino in dining room doesn't fit the floor and is rippled causing a trip hazard - plaster has fallen off of the wall in the front bedroom under the window - bath panel is held on with sticky tape If these were remedy the cottage would be perfect

Dear Guest Thank you for the lovely comments you left in the guest book. They are very much appreciated. • "Stayed here for a week."

Delightful little house, 2 minute walk to the seafront down a slight hill. Parking for 2 cars is debatable, perhaps 2 small cars. The rear garden is overlooked by another house at the end of the garden but we only saw the occupants once all week. The rear garden could do with tidying up and the previous holiday makers hadn’t cleaned up after their dog so apart from the first night we didn’t use the rear garden, we took our dog out. The cottage is comfortable, 2 comfortable sofas and an armchair, decent TV with a Humax freeview box. Great little kitchen/diner. 2 very comfortable bedrooms, really comfortable beds. A large bathroom which was also great, terrific shower and plenty of hot water. I would definitely recommend this place. We would stay here again.

Apologies that the previous guest had not cleared up after their dog. There is a plan to widen the drive a little so that should help. Property Owner

  • "We enjoyed our stay at Rigg Cottage, it was a cosy cottage and not far from the beach."

There were a few problems mainly around the TV, which was not working on our arrival on Friday. We contacted you and you sent the engineer on Saturday. He managed to get it working and left a remote control he had in his van. He advised that he would inform you that the TV would probably need replacing. On Monday the TV would not work again so we spoke with you and you sent the engineer again. He managed to get it working but said theses were ongoing problems. In terms of the cottage welcome book it advised that all instruction manuals were in the one drawer in the dining room but on checking, there were none in the drawer, so no help with any devices! The book also said there would be a starter pack of logs in the shed but we could not find any. The cottage did have great blackout blinds and curtains in the bedrooms which were very good. A lovely little cottage.

Sorry you had trouble with the TV and that you did not manage to find the instruction manuals. They are in a drawer in the dining room cupboard. Property Owner

  • "The cottage had a wonderful character, however this was let down by the extremely poor maintenance inside and outside."

The sofas were so tired with no spring left and grubby. The Lino in the dining area was poor quality, ill fitted and torn, there were ripples in the flooring that it was a trip hazard. Paint had been sloshed about, over the window frames, on windows etc. Dining chairs were stained. Outside everything was ramshackle; every outbuilding needed painting. Lots of clutter, seat covers mouldy, dead plants, broken deckchairs strewn about, cleaning equipment left hanging around. The back garden was so unappealing that we never used the outside space, especially since there was a house in the back garden. This was one of the worst cottages I have ever been in and so far removed from the listing as to be almost fraudulent!!

Tastefully decorated and spotlessly clean. We could see the sea from both bedrooms and it was only a 2 minute walk down to the beach. Delighted to find a beautiful little garden beyond the patio. The only negative was the bathroom, it could do with frosted glass window (rather than having to raise and lower the blind for privacy) and the bath panel was loose, but this didn’t detract from our enjoyment of the cottage. We would definitely recommend and we would love to stay again. Thank you Rigg Cottage.

The cottage is a short five minute stroll from the beach and a further five minutes brings you to a good pub with excellent food. There is also a more up-market, although more expensive restaurant nearby. The village shop has ceased trading but there is a good community store in a village nearby. • "We stayed at Rigg Cottage over the Easter weekend 2022."

A family of 4 with 2 dogs we needed somewhere dog friendly. The cottage was clean and tidy on arrival, with everything we needed for the weekend. The living room was cosy and well laid out, and the dining room / kitchen had everything you needed to be home from home. There was sufficient space also for our 2 dog crates after turning the dining table 90°. Outside space was fine for an enclosed garden, with a clothes horse under the stairs for outside drying and out house where we found the outside freezer (not used) and a couple of body boards the kids had a session on at the beach. The front bedroom was quite spacious even with a double and a single in there, the back room with the double I’d say was a little cosy but not an issue. The bathroom was well presented and the bath / shower were fine. The shower you had to gently adjust to get a fine line between too hot and cold, but once mastered no issue. Nothing I haven’t experienced before in hotels. Great to have the off-road parking too, that really helps. Location was perfect, literally 100 yards from the beach and very close to the pub and seafood restaurant which were both spot on. There’s a small shop around the bay, just check opening times. All in all we loved it and would have no hesitations in staying again. If I had to highlight and feedback for improvements I’d say I was a little nervous of the back fence and the potential for this to be jumped - not that my dogs did. Other than that I’ve really nothing negative to add. Thanks for a great stay!

It was quite hard work with a golden retriever as we were constantly stepping over her. it would be very hard work with 5 people in the house. The kitchen is not really big enough to cater for 5. The fridge is small. The photos suggest it is quiet smart when in fact it is tired and in need of a coat of paint. We also saw the building to the rear on google sat view and called to query what it was before booking. We were told it was nothing to worry about and not used. It is a house effectively in the back garden and lived in full time. We would not have booked had we know. We also called to find out if there was a hair dryer in the premises and were told not. There was, suggesting a lack of knowledge of the property. The sea view from the lounge is totally blocked when you park the car on the small parking area at the front. The best thing about this cottage was the location. Sandsend is a lovely village with good cafe and pubs. having the beach at the bottom of the road was great. We would say the cottage was slightly below average and not worth the cost.

Whitby 2.5 miles.

Lying on Yorkshire's spectacular Heritage Coastline, Sandsend is the ideal place for a family holiday with its award winning, wide sweeping beaches, rock pools and dramatic cliffs. Children will enjoy damming the little beck where it crosses the beach to form a freshwater lagoon - great (and safe) for paddling and boating! For the more energetic the village sits on the lovely long distance Cleveland Way Trail, which offers great off-road cycling along the disused coastal railway as well as breathtaking clifftop walks. The National Trust now own the nearby headland, Sandsend Ness, where there is a delightful nature trail in the old quarry pits. A special place offering something for everyone!
