  • "The property owners were extremely helpful and understanding and provided a shower-stool on request."

We thank them for that. This property has magnificent views from the bay window in one of the upstairs bedrooms. We saw and photographed both Curlew and Lapwing in the fields along with young blackbirds, rabbits and hares. If you are interested in nature, this is the place to be. You need binoculars to see the nearest habitation so you are completely on your own with the nature. There is an outside lawn area with seating, one of which enjoys the magnificent views. The upstairs shower is over the bath and has no hand-held spray, just a fixed overhead one. The downstairs shower is a hand-held spray which fixes to a slider to use overhead so it can be used both ways. It is in a three foot square cubicle - about the size of an old-fashioned telephone box. There is plenty of room for parking outside in what was a farm yard but is not being used for that purpose anymore. There is a 13amp electricity socket that can be used to charge an electric bike or car by arrangement with the owner. The kitchen is well equipped. There is a dishwasher in the kitchen and a washing machine in an outhouse. There are plenty of sofas and chairs. There is a large dining table with a bench on each long side and a chair at each end. The WiFi is reliable but slow. It is good enough for iPlayer etc which is available on the smart TV.

If you are looking for somewhere secluded/quiet then this is the place to be. There are some lovely places to eat within a couple of miles - highly recommend The Witching Post at Egton and Arncliffe Arms in Glaisdale very friendly. • "Beautiful setting, well equipped and spotlessly clean cottage and great vacation."

Only minor comments (and they are minor) were a) the poor broadband speed, not a great problem for us, and b) the legacy of Covid restrictions which seem to prevent the availability of DVDs, games/jigsaws and visitors book - which is always useful to see what restaurants and attractions other guests have visited. I would have thought that those restrictions are now largely unnecessary.

Exactly what we wanted, which was a feeling of isolation without being cut off from things! Lovely kitchen for making meals which we wanted to do. Very well equipped, great range oven & hob. Beautiful view from kitchen window! Lovely comfortable bedrooms and all have stunning views! Large lounge and dining area, very sociable space without feeling formal in any way. Great for a dog to share with you! Wood fire not needed in our stay but would be awesome in winter! Garden space is lovely. Only shame was we didn't quite get the temperature to fully appreciate it! Highly recommended, but to get the most from it you must want the beautiful isolation it provides, which is exactly why we never ventured too far from the lodge! Would go back in a heartbeat!

  • "A fabulous cottage as always, but 1 small niggle."

The listing clearly states dog welcome and the photos APPEAR to show an enclosed garden, however this is not the case. The welcome email received a week before arrival stated that dogs must be on a lead at all times. When we arrived it was clear that the whole area was very open. This holiday was part of my recovery from a serious illness and I did not anticipate getting dressing at 6.30 am each morning to walk the dog down the drive on a lead. This should be made a bit clearer in the description as I would not have booked this particular cottage if I had this information in advance. That said we had a wonderful time even though the weather was not on our side.

Have re-booked for April 23. The house is lovely, very well presented, like a show home. The quality of the beds and bedding was superb. I always take my own pillow but it’s really need not have done. We particularly loved the surrounding countryside, no immediate neighbours and working farms all around. My mother had her 88th birthday there and she, a real country girl, loved the old farm buildings. Well saw Hares, Owls and of course a couple of pheasants. The owner, Emma was extremely helpful and very pleasant. I had a puncture and she checked up with me to ensure I had it sorted. It is such a peaceful place, we really didn’t want to leave and April can’t come soon enough for me.

  • "We booked this cottage in October 2020, for a one week stay in September 2021, for 6 adults and one dog."

We purposely chose Westonby Lodge as the advert said it was suitable for those who are disabled/have mobility issues, and has a secure garden for dogs. I’m afraid to say this cottage is most definitely not suitable for those with mobility issues. My mother in law (who uses a wheelchair/ mobility walker) could barely get through the front door due to the step and very narrow opening; could not get into the shower due to the step and it being too small; and could barely get onto the bed due to it being ridiculously high. We also note the lack of suitable grab rails throughout the property which would be required for someone who is disabled/has mobility issues. The garden was not secure and had a huge hole in the fencing/hedge. Also, we were advised just a few days before our stay that all dogs had to be kept on a lead due to poor fencing and farm animals near by. If we had been advised of this at point of booking we most certainly would not have booked here. This cottage is advertised as being suitable for 8 adults, we struggled with 6 as it really was a lot smaller than we expected, and it was quite difficult to cook main meals for 6 in such a small narrow galley kitchen. Whilst the surrounding area and views from the cottage were outstanding, I really do feel this cottage was missold to us based on the above feedback, and we would not be recommending it to others. I also noticed the rather high price for the same time next year, around £300 extra per week which I find very surprising and not at all good value for money.

Thank you for your feedback. The property does have a ground floor bedroom which may be suitable for people with mobility issues but we do not mention wheelchair friendly. This has now been removed from the description to prevent further confusion. Property Owner

However, for a group of eight no washing machine was a big draw back, also having only one towel and one hand towel for a week without a washing machine we felt was a bit of a draw back, also ideally it’s a cottage for six not eight. That said, I don’t want to be overly negative, the communication beforehand was excellent, the cottage was very clean and it was a brilliant base for us, if we were six instead of eight we’d definitely consider booking again.

  • "Westonby Lodge is a fantastic location for a beautiful, relaxing holiday."

It is beautifully furnished inside (lovely country themed rooms, settees, tables etc) and has lovely seating and table outside so you can enjoy al fresco meals looking out over the fields. Also fantastic views from the upstairs bedrooms! It has the advantage of a downstairs bedroom and there are two bathrooms with the downstairs one having a walk in shower. This was great for our daughter who has mobility issues and therefore didn’t have to venture upstairs. Plenty of space outside for your car too! The only noises we heard at nighttime were the wildlife, so it really is somewhere you can get away from it all! The owners had thoughtfully left night lights in corridors and a welcome basket - the biscuits and cake didn’t last very long! Due to Covid the owners had sent the information they usually leave in the poverty by email which was much appreciated and gave lots of ideas of things to do and places to eat. There is a wealth of places to visit and some lovely walks to Roseberry Topping and the Bridal Stones. A great location for a fantastic week of peace and quiet. A home from home!

Great communication from Emma about how we wished the bedrooms set up which were lovely, comfortable and spacious. Kitchen was well equipped with everything you could possibly need. The little things made a difference like having dish cloths, washing up liquid, a few dishwater tablets and tea towels. Salt, pepper and vinegar available all which doesn’t sound like a big deal but really thoughtful. Scales, ice creams scoops, whisks, you name it, fab! Emma’s husband kindly brought the Tesco delivery man down to us when he arrived at their house instead of ours which was great. Brilliant barn to store all our bikes and toys. Lovely furniture outside for being outdoors in the nice weather we had. It was great to have access to a Hoover and mop to clean up after ourselves and we had a few trips to the beach. Oh and a clothes airer. As a family of 3 adults and 5 kids plus our dog everyone was cater for, (us adults got some peace as the WiFi was good too)! Views from the Lodge were lovely and great to go out for a run in the morning to see the scenery. Would love to come back!
