  • "Lovely location and obviously a lot of thought has gone into this shepherd hut but this has got to be the most uncomfortable bed we have ever slept on - we left tired and longing for a good nights sleep after 2 nights without much sleep at all."

The mattress is bowed in the middle, the bed makes unearthly creaking sounds every time you move and the pillows were lumpy (which I have never experienced before!). Ruined what would have been a perfect stay! Hot tub and pizza oven are lovely touches - just too tired to enjoy them!

The setting and the view is just out of this world. The chickens and ducks are the cutest addition, my favourite thing was giving them some seed in the mornings. The hot tub is perfectly located, private and quiet - just you and the stars. The WiFi really doesn’t work, which doesn’t matter at all, just be aware if like us you are self employed and can’t 100% disconnect. We really hope to come back in the future.

  • "It would of been more welcoming if the owners had introduced themselves to us."

If it wasn't for having no hot water on arrival, we wouldn't know who the owner was. One of the issues was the log burner hearth corner was easy to catch your toes on. The bed needs support on the wall side,as it tilts and was uncomfortable. The hot tub hadn't been checked for the duration of our stay, and the water was smelling and discoloured like a dirty stream. Overall, not a very good experience.

So sorry you did not feel welcome at our shepherds Hut. At the Brae we run a policy of not encroaching on our guests precious holiday time, choosing to introduce ourselves via the Welcome Pack located in the Hut detailing our names and contact numbers. Should any of our guests wish to chat or even introduce themselves in person we are more than willing to reciprocate. The hot water comes via a combi boiler which heats the water as you use it IE no stored hot water waiting to be used on arrival. The log burner hearth is raised higher than the floor in order to comply with building regulations, to form a physical barrier to prevent people walking into the hot stove and burning themselves. Thank you for the feedback regarding the bed. Since your visit we have checked the specification for the bed frame which indicates it is only rated at 250kg max weight. We have now repaired and reinforced the bed frame as a temporary measure and have ordered a bespoke frame which should be good for over 300kg. The hot tub is filled with clean water for the start of every booking, checked daily and sanitiser added , this is always done while you are out in order to maintain guests privacy and avoid embarrassing situations, so you will not have noticed it happening. Provided you follow the guidelines as detailed in the welcome pack the hot tub water will remain clean and fragrant for the duration of your stay. Property Owner

We thoroughly enjoyed the luxury of the hot tub. May not be the best place for people when they are less mobile & you have to climb over your partner getting out of bed, the entrance is very narrow & not the easiest to access, non of this took away from the over-all fantastic experience & the hot tub.

Hottub was so relaxing, a pergola or sturdy gazebo over would make it more accessible come rain or shine. We were lucky enough to get a break in the weather to enjoy it on both days of our stay. There wasn’t any dressing gowns provided for the hottub as in other hottub stays we’ve visited. However this wasn’t a problem as I’d packed beach towels. Beautiful views and a perfect location for a romantic break away. We would definitely recommend to our friends and family. We enjoyed watching the ducks and chickens however one of the chickens does give you a sneaky peck! We visited Thornton Le Dale and Scarborough. We also enjoyed a meal at the Coachman not too far away.

  • "Cabin was lovely and clean, shower wasnt very warm and the hot tub wasnt very powerful at all and left us very disapointed."

The write up said there was a chip shop and a shop close by… both looked like they had been closed down for a long time. The drive upto the property is very very tight and no path through the garden to the cabin is difficult in bad weather when it gets muddy.

We are very dissapointed to hear you had issues while staying at our shepherds hut, we always endeavour to do whatever we can to ensure our guests have a pleasant stay. Unfortunately the fish and chip shop on the High Street is currently closed for a refit and will be re-opening in January. There is however a mobile fish and chip shop which stops outside the Village Hall, go to Facebook Alleyways Mobile Traditional Fish and Chips for opening times. Failing that there is another fish and chip shop at East Ayton just 8 mins away in the car. The village shop is very much still open located next door to the Peacock public house, Snainton Butcher and convenience store, google Facebook Snainton Village Butchers for opening times. There is also a renowned Butchers/deli less than 4 mins away in the car at Brompton, Google Glaves Butchers Brompton for opening times, there pork pies are legendary. Or for a bigger shop there is a Spar at East Ayton 8 mins away in the car. The Shepherds Hut is fitted with a combi boiler, fitted externally to save space in the hut, and will take a little time to heat up particularly during severe cold weather as was the case during your stay. Please be patient it is operating correctly. During the daily inspection of the hot tub during your stay I found that all four of the massage jets were in the off position which will have had a major impact on your experience. The driveway up to the Hut is 2.9m wide narrowing to 2.5m between the corners of the adjacent properties. Obviously there is no remedial action we can take to resolve this however the use of the drive and private parking space is optional there is plenty of on streat parking at the bottom of the drive. The Hut is located on a grass paddock and the ground can be expected to get water logged during long periods of heavy rain. In a perfect world I would love to have control of the weather and make the sun shine for all of our guests, however back to reality what we have done this summer is to dig a new soak away at the bottom of the paddock and we have rubber matting and straw to protect the most vunerable areas, particularly the access points. During your stay the ground was frozen and covered in snow, I am inclined to take the muddy conditions up to the hut you report as speculation. The site is on a South facing slope so it does dry up quickly once the weather improves. During low season many of the local facilities mentioned in our write up may be closed or have limted access. If certain local facilities are Key to your holiday please contact them before booking so as to ensure they are available during your stay. We live on site and can normally respond quickly, so whether you are having problems with any of the facilities or just need some local knowledge please give us the opportunity to help by letting us know while you are there. PS Our local public house, The Peacock will be hosting the Counterfit Celts, a local four piece irish Folk/rock band on boxing day. For future events google Facebook The Peacock Snainton. The hut is lovely, modern yet rustic and very well kept. The hut was in an immaculate state with plenty of equipment to cook with and glasses etc to feel at home. The log burner is brilliant and I spent most of the time with a log or two crackling away as I sat and chilled. The hot tub was a welcome addition to the property. Very secret around the back so no-one can overlook you. My only feedback would be if the cottage had a coffee/ Nespresso machine. Back to the Brae, it’s so quaint, well kept with a hot water outdoor shower to use before and after the hot tub. The ducks were good company and funny to watch and we were blessed with lovely weather day 2, 3 and 4. Visit Castle Howard if you’ve not been before and Dalby Forest! The only downsides were the road noise (which you soon forget) and a very tight driveway, definitely come in from the East to swing up the drive on your right, especially if you have low profiles!!!

Thank you for your feedback and we are very disappointed you did not enjoy your stay at our Shepherds Hut, we aim to please every guest and we pride ourselves on cleanliness and comfort as seen in previous guest reviews. Had we have been made aware of any shortfalls upon your arrival then they would have been rectified immediately and without question. The Brae is located in a secluded spot on the periphery of the village and so we do have neighbours and on occasions including New Year, as is the case on your visit, it would not be unreasonable to expect to be able to hear their celebrations. Regarding the bedding, this is highly unusual and we can assure guests that all linen is laundered between guests and we have recently replaced bedding after your visit. Sykes Cottages have a dedicated helpline for guests staying in a property and we do also leave our owner contact number in the property welcome pack and would have assisted immediately if you had called us. The Brae was just perfect in every way to meet both requirements. The excellently built Shepherds Hut was big enough to house everything you require while being small enough to be cosy and romantic. Set in its own private field with a private hot tub , there is plenty of space to just relax and take in the beautiful views.

Owners so helpful and made us feel so welcome. The Coachman pub definitely worth a visit, 10 min walk. Highly recommend booking this gorgeous shepherds hut. Located in such a quiet little village. Not much opportunity for food shopping, so would recommend stopping in the village or town before arrival for your essentials. Butchers in village and lots of fresh eggs.

  • "A delightful accommodation in a beautiful location."

Very private and felt very safe in these troubled times. The owners are charming and since Martin built the hut himself, they have managed to incorporate lots of design details to make maximum use of the space. We never felt cramped and had a very relaxing time. Another plus point for us is that it is perfect for those of us who travel without a car. There is a bus stop 2 minutes away and you can reach Scarborough in 25 minutes and Filey is not much further. In the other direction Pickering is even nearer. But there are also splendid walks straight from the door. On a ten mile hike via Troutbeck Mill we enjoyed perfect peace and lovely scenery. We will be back!

  • "This is a really lovely little place."

Super private up at the back end of the owners garden, and it has views over the countryside as it’s at the top of a little hill too. I can really see that the owners have paid attention to previous feedback and reviews- adding things like real glasses (for when not using the hot tub) and sun loungers when previous reviews have mentioned they would be a good thing to add. The owners were friendly and helpful, but left us to our own devices once they showed us around. The hot tub was lovely, and when we turned all the lights off the clouds let us do a little star gazing in the warmth of the tub too! I do have to reiterate the advice of previous reviewers though- it’s a bit of a squeeze up the driveway- but doable. The owners have large cars up there, and there is somewhere to turn around at the top, but it takes a bit of confidence / knowing your car! Location wise it’s a really good base to go to the east coast where there are good footpaths all the way along the coast. We parked in Scarborough, trained to Filey and then walked back. It’s a lovely place and we’ll definitely stay again!
