  • "Lovely property but the traffic noise was unbearable at times."

Description needs amending as definitely not in Romaldskirk!!

  • "Blinds, extractor fans etc not working."

Bathroom and kitchen not cleaned properly. Bed linens very tired. Cooker hood not fitted properly or damaged (?). Does not look like a 'freshly converted apartment'.

These claims are totally false. We have video proof of the blinds etc working. Kitchen and bathroom were the same standard as usual and always gain us good reviews. Our manager drove past at different stages and the blinds were either up or down,so, definitely working. We have checked everything and all is working fine. Bed linen is same as usual and any that are looking unfit we always discard. These comments seem unfair. We even offered a complimentary clean and there was no response. Property Owner

Welcome pack a nice touch. thoroughly enjoyed our stay, but I do think my (meant to be helpful) comments below should be noted. We we are a disabled couple and found it difficult to park safely outside to unload the car - on a blind bend and 3 way traffic lights - just need to be aware of this, park elsewhere until you get the keys from the keysafe. Also, the bath/shower MUST have safety rails added, it is a potentially dangerous for all, but especially elderly or disabled visitors.

A great location right next to the River with views of the castle. It has been converted to a very high standard and has everything you could want.We had a welcome pack of food and essentials on arrival and the owner was very helpful prior to arrival and lots of information in the apartment. It is a short 5 minutes walk into Barnard Castle. There are lots of cafes, pubs and restaurants and local shops.A very nice town which is clearly on the up with lots of walks and parks. The apartment is well positioned for visiting North Pennines AONB and the Yorkshire Dales. Would definitely recommend.

  • "The flat itself was lovely and very clean."

My one complaint which had I have known about it before coming would have affected my choice, is the close proximity to a busy and very noisy road. The lorries and cars were in inches from the lounge window and at times it was very noisy especially with agricultural lorries. It is a really shame as the view from the flat is really beautiful and we enjoyed our stay but restricted our times in the flat due the intense noise of the traffic. This continues through the night and early in the morning.

  • "Very clean modern smart but extra comfortable holiday flat in an old building."

Super helpful housekeeper - lives nearby and came immediately to fix a small tap problem. Just be aware if travelling with a dog you don’t have direct access here to the river in the pics or any garden, but there is a grass area handy enough/not far to walk for morning /evening let-outs.

    Reviewed by Rosemary4.4Jun 2021

  • "Although dog friendly I wouldn't recommend taking a dog as there is no outside space at all, this wasnt too much of a problem as there is a picnic area alongside the river just across the road but it would have been nice to be able to let the dog out first thing in the morning and last thing at night."

However it was very atmospheric walking the dog in the morning twilight with the sound of the river and the castle looming in the background.

The cottage absolutely lived up to it's description and I appreciated all the advice re Covid and what to bring. The cottage is in a great location for Barnard Castle in that I could walk into the centre with ease. The only possible downside is that the property is on a main road and the lounge can be noisy. Fortunately it doesn't affect the bedrooms.

  • "Our only challenge was collecting the keys."

The email said to contact the owner, but he did not answer the phone when we called. (I left two messages. He finally emailed me back. Turned out he was having some issues calling me back.) Luckily your Skye team answered when I called and were able to provide the code to access the key lock box, or we would not have been able to get in. Also, there were not any instructions regarding the handling of the garbage or recycling when we left, so we just left it in the apartment. Sorry if it wasn't supposed to be handled that way. Otherwise we loved the place. It was very comfortable and quite unique.

  • "It’s not a cottage but a first floor flat adjacent to a very busy road."

The rumbling of the heavy traffic coming over the bridge was quite disturbing. We had to open windows because it was so humid in the flat but had to pull down blinds because the flat overlooks the road and passengers can see right in, not to mention flies from the river attracted to the lights! People need to be well aware of where this flat is situated before they book. Pity really as it was comfortable and within walking distance to the hub of pubs and shops. Saw an iron but no stand up ironing board and a little attention to cleaning needed i.e fridge needed a wipe out and cooker hood was very greasy. It would be a good idea to put in information pack about the WiFi passcode and how to use induction cooker top. Overall we enjoyed Castle Barnard.

I stayed here when waiting for my house sale to complete. It felt like a home from home with all the facilities I needed for me and my young son (and pets!). The owner and caretaker were very accommodating and easy to contact to answer any queries. Also with being at street level people walking by very close are able to look into the windows to the living room and kitchen area.We kept the blinds down to combat this. This being said the general location is very good for the area and the town of Barnard Castle itself We had a very pleasant stay and visited the local area and completed walks on the Teesdale way and had a drive up to Hadrians wall. • "The flat is lovely, furnished to a high level and very comfortable."

We enjoyed the town and found the locals very friendly and helpful with lots of lovely antique shops, pubs and good places to eat - everything from excellent takeaways to fine dining. We particularly enjoyed visits to the Bowes Museum and Barnard Castle and found it a good starting place for lovely walks in the area and easy journeys for visits to other attractions in the area. As late bookers and I think the first guests (?), there were some issues about owner contact/key details which were duly resolved - just in time! Meantime, a couple of practical issues: - no bread/veg knives - fridge socket didn't work (we just moved it) - easy instructions for use of cooker might be helpful

The property

A freshly converted apartment within the old ‘White Swan’ pub, right at the foot of the old bridge and overlooking the castle across the River Tees.

On the first floor of this beautiful and spectacularly situated old building, 2 Riverside is a delightful and modern retreat and a perfect location from which to explore the many attractions of Barnard Castle.

The views to the rear of this building are superb, taking in the famous River Tees, the ancient bridge at the foot of the castle walls, dating from 1569 and the 12th century castle.

After a day exploring the town and the wonderful countryside of Teesdale there is no nicer place to relax.

Take in the scenery from the open-plan living area, a wonderful modernised layout, divided between a lounge/diner and a well-equipped kitchen, or discover the bedrooms where you can wake up to the charm-filled surroundings every day that goes by.

Barnard Castle is a real gem; the nearby Bowes Museum has a world-class collection of European art and textiles whilst the town itself is a colourful and lively place where interesting local shops jostle for space along the ancient roads.

High Force is down the road, Bowes Castle just four miles away, Witham Hall nestles in the centre of town and Eggleston Abbey sits on the banks of the river.

Further afield are the Yorkshire Dales National Park, the beautiful Dales towns of Richmond and Ripon and of course Durham.

A one-of-a-kind retreat in an enticing part of the country.

BARNARD CASTLE

Staindrop 6 miles; Richmond 13 miles; Darlington 16 miles; Durham 20 miles.

The market town of Barnard Castle is situated in the unspoilt countryside of Teesdale in County Durham. It stands on the site of an ancient Roman fort which crosses the river. The medieval ruins of the castle still tower over the river and are well worth a visit. Known affectionately as 'Barney’ by residents and visitors alike, the town boasts cobble streets, yards and back lanes, which were first laid out in the 12th century. The nearby Bowes Museum is well worth a visit and a wonderful way to spend a day wandering around this beautiful building and experiencing the fascinating exhibitions. Beautiful walking country is right on the doorstep of this lovely market town, with woodland walks and cycle routes and the Lake District, the Pennine and Teesdale Ways, and the River Tees and magnificent waterfalls at High Force are all within easy reach.
