• "We had an amazing stay at wood cottage."

  Perfectly located, with dramatic views from every angle. The house was perfectly clean and had everything you could want, thoughtfully equipped and very well laid out. Robert the owner is very friendly and helpful. The kids loved exploring the woodland and stream at the back of the cottage, and it's within a short drive of major towns, attractions and the coast. I would absolutely recommend this place, if you're thinking of a trip to the Yorkshire Moors dont hesitate to book!

• "The directions were spot on and we spoke with Robert, the owner, prior to our arrival, he provided additional information that would assist us should we have trouble finding our way to Wood Cottage."

  The property was exceptionally clean and tidy. I have stayed in many holiday homes and this was, by far, the cleanest and most equipped I have ever experienced. The location of the farm and the cottage (also Sheep Cote, The Shepherd's hut) is perfect for anyone wishing to get away for peace, quiet, rest and relaxation. It is a quiet and remote location but just a short drive to a main road that links to Stokesley or Helmsley, (Northallerton, York, Thirsk, Ripon). All are great towns to visit. (Do check out the market days.) The cottage is wonderfully comfortable and cosy and we were welcomed with a basket of goodies which was lovely. It is light and airy and a perfect size for either 2 or 4 to stay. A separate toilet as well as the bathroom is always helpful. The shower is great, hot, roomy and towel rails help dry towels, radiators to maintain the temperature on the colder nights. On the clear nights, of which we were fortunate to have many, you can see the full night sky of stars and the moon lighting up the landscape. No light pollution. We walked up the mound/round to behind the cottage for some amazing views and through the woods adjacent to the cottage which was very rewarding and refreshing. The internet is good with there being a router in Wood Cottage and this was good enough to provide a clear and uninterrupted connection for meetings I/we held on both MSTeams and Zoom. As previously stated in other reviews, there is no mobile signal or mobile data available, this suited us just fine. There are a number of places nearby for walks, short, long, circular or to pick up somewhere along the Cleveland Way. Walks from the farm or drive to a point of interest. Lots to see and do, leaflets at the property if you are struggling for things to see and do. Park & Ride for York and Minster probably easier for most. Parking in some towns uses a parking disc (clock) which can be picked up from most local shops, town halls etc. (Free to obtain the disc) Most towns can be reached fairly easily, York is about 1 hour away. Robert is a busy guy and yet he had the time to chat and share local information and is a pleasure to talk with. Trixie visited for daily fusses. She is a lovely girl who will bring you a stone as a welcome gift and yet is not at all intrusive. A thoroughly wonderful week in a great location and we have already booked to return in 2025. Wood Cottage really is a most wonderful find.

  The cottage was immaculate and had everything we needed with very comfy beds. The surroundings just beautiful – you forget how quiet and dark places can be. The night sky was amazing without light pollution and it was lovely to be based on a working sheep farm with friendly dog and cats!! Lots of walks in the area which you can start from the cottage. We have booked to go again next year! Thank you Robert.

• "Comfort and quality."

  We have been holidaying in self catering accommodation for many years and have experienced the wide range of what is available. Wood Cottage is an exception to the norm. From the design stage it was obviously made for purpose. Both the bedrooms are a great size and have the most comfortable beds we have experienced away from home. The second WC was useful with four adults staying. The living/kitchen area is on the first floor and a good size and again well designed. The kitchen equipment from the cooker to the teaspoons and everything in between is plentiful and good quality. A clear concise guide covers everything in the cottage. The mobile signal is virtually non existent but you might be able to get WiFi calls with your provider, however the internet speed is limited. The TV is Freeview and that comes with more limited options than Freesat or anything you might be used to with streaming services. There is a DVD player so pack some of your favourite films to watch. Now finally we have to talk about the setting, it is a working farm and the approaching drive way is a gravel up hill which is a little uneven is places. However when you arrive and get out the area is absolutely stunning and has to be seen to be believed and there is direct access to walks from the doorsteps.

  The cottage was very clean and the owner was very friendly. The kitchen was well stocked with utensils and equipment, the water was lovely and hot and the beds were very comfortable. We also appreciated the basket of goodies very much.

• "You will not find a better small cottage."

  It was set in such a lovely location and being an upside down cottage was ideal as you had the lovely views from the lounge diner across the farm and dale. The bed was so cozy and comfortable and there was a door from the bedroom leading out to a seating area with table, a picnic table and a walk through the woods up onto the hill behind the farm. The cottage was spotlesly clean and should be a credit to Robert the owner. Robert phoned us the day before we were due to arrive and he was always happy to have a chat, even if he was busy on the farm. Would highly recommend.

  .. My advice would be to book it! You will not be disappointed. We have just returned from a fabulous week here. The cottage is first class, the scenery is second to non and the owners, Robert and Jo, are the loveliest people. There is lots to do within the area if you want to get out and about but Wood Cottage is so lovely that if you just want to relax and enjoy the glorious countryside literally outside of your door then you can. I don't normally write reviews but this is an exceptional cottage in a beautiful location and deserves 10/10

• "Our first trip to Bilsdale and the North York Moors for about 12 years, and the first for our children."

  We found and booked Wood cottage and are so glad that we did !! The cottage was exceptionally clean and well prepared for our arrival, which included a lovely and thoughtful welcoming hamper of local goodies, and Easter eggs for the children. We found it very comfortable indeed and it had all we needed to be self sufficient whilst there. Amazing location on this working farm in the Cleveland Hills, with stunning views all around. The children met some new born lambs and we saw so much wildlife all around us. Nothing was to much trouble for our hosts Jo and Robert, thank you. Ideally located for any serious walkers to explore the area right out of the door. Plenty of attraction's for families & children not to far away. Fantastic local pubs for Sunday Dinner in Great Broughton and don't forget Whitby for Fish and Chips !! You will have Peace and tranquility at the cottage, and it's the perfect place to sit and unwind after a day of walking or exploring. We would definitely recommend this cottage and we would definitely return for another holiday in the future.

  It is perfectly located to explore North Yorkshire and the cottage is well equipped and beautifully decorated. The cleanliness was incredible and it was a cozy comfortable spot to have lazy evenings after busy days. Jo and Rob who own the cottage on their working farm were so friendly and accommodating. Nothing was too much trouble and they were great to allow our daughter to help feed the sheep and cats. Highly recommend Wood Cottage to everybody it is great!

• "An amazing cottage with all required amenities and just so clean."

  Easy to find and it is out in the countryside but not far away from townships of Stokesley or Helmsley. Plenty to do for a young children nearby or walkers for those interested in hill walking. For the children I recommend, Woldie lavender farm (lavender farm but has numerous activities for children, such as a maze that contains activities and much more), Bird of Prey Centre at Helmsley and Monk Park Farm. Cannot help but enjoy the holiday on this working farm.

  It has quality and charm. Robert and Jo have put a great deal of thought into the cottage and equipped it as they would want to find a holiday home if they were renting. Despite being very busy on a working sheep farm just coming the end of the lambing season they made us very welcome, without being in any way intrusive. We really appreciated the extra touches, a basket of Yorkshire treats and fresh flowers in every room. It was peaceful, quiet and the perfect place to relax. Unlike a previous reviewer we had no problems at all on local lanes, and nor did we have any problems whatsoever with the track through the farm leading to the cottage or the parking area. The track is well maintained and there's ample space in front of the cottage for parking. In all, one of the best holiday homes we've ever rented. Thank you both!

• "We had a wonderful break at the cottage, only wish we had stayed longer."

  The cottage was beautiful with everything we needed and more, I love the little touches, things like that make your stay that little bit extra special. The beds where very comfortable, we are now buying new pillows and possibly a new mattress as we sleept so well. The owners were very welcoming and accomadating, taking time out of there busy day to show us around the farm and introduce our girls to the baby lambs.....big hit they've not stopped talking about Bingo and Wriggles. Thanks again for a wonderful stay, we hope to return again after such a lovely break.

• "Lovely cottage, a great place to escape to if you want peace and quiet."

  It would be fun to return to when the farm is at "work", sheep and lambs etc. Even watching the turkeys pottering about (being silly birds) over morning coffee was fun! Cottage was clean and comfortable, and the owner, Robert, was always on hand to help or just chat. One minor point. The mats on the twin bedroom floor were rather slippery, and could be a hazard without special care.

  As ever, a very warm welcome from Robert, complemented by the vase of fresh flowers and welcome basket of goodies. Despite having a working farm to run, Robert never failed to prioritise our comfort and well-being and checking that all was well. The cottage has been a huge contributor to a lovely week’s holiday.

• "What a fantastic view from property."

  The main thing that hits you is the total silence apart from the odd animal noises. The road to and from the farm is narrow single track with passing places, we are from Lincolnshire so used to it, the track to the cottage is bumpy and I found that turning in farm fard and reversing through cottage gate was the best way. If your from less rural areas should slow down and enjoy views from lefthand side road when out traveling and be prepared to give way to farm vehicles. The walks are hilly, some are close by and some 5-15 minutes away they are rewarding though , the pubs are local 4 between 1/2 and 6 miles, a little pricey but good but rewarding resting and the real homebred locals are so friendly,

  The upside down layout works very well, and is tastefully furnished and very comfortable. The welcome basket was very generous in size and content.   We were greeted by Joanne, cake, a bottle of wine and Trixie (sheep dog) and made to feel very welcome. The cottage was exceptionally clean and well equiped and comfortable. I will now have to get a new bed at home as I slept so well. Easy to get to places of interest - Robin Hood's bay, Whitby ( advise to use park and ride), Lord Stones Park (amazing views), Ripon, Stokesley and many more. A very restful holiday.

• "A beautiful cottage in a really lovely location."

  The owners could not have been more thoughtful or kinder: from the generous welcome pack of goodies, to the gorgeous bunches of flowers in every room to rushing out with cushions when they saw us sitting on the wooden garden seats. For all that they were not in any way intrusive. An issue with the fridge was dealt with immediately and Robert offered to transport my husband (who is not very mobile) around the farm on one of his all terrain vehicles. Cottage well equipped and spotlessly clean, my neurotic questions about how Covid secure things were were answered promply and in a reassuring way before we arrived. I could go on ... and on... but it was a really magical week and our teenagers loved it too. Thank you Robert and Jo-Anne. Thank you Sykes.
