  • "The cottage was in a lovely location and was very well presented."

During my staying I noticed that the kettle was in bad condition , so I boiled the water for hot drinks in a sauce pan. There was 3 sauce pans and one of them (medium size) wasn't working on the electric cooker. I managed to cook my meals throughout the period of my staying by utilising the other pans available. There was no instructions about recycling and the bin that was in the outdoors garden area was already full when arrived. I couldn't see any cleaning spray to clean the kitchen after I used the cooker etc and so just washed up with soap and water with the cloth and sponge available. I have also used the oven and whilst the functionality of the oven was great the state of the oven wasn't and it looked very greasy and so I had to cover my meal in the oven whilst cooking. The heating wasn't consistent every day and so I felt a little cold during my staying. It would be nicer if the guests are aware roughly what time the heating comes on and switches off. On the check out day the heating never turned on and so felt really cold. The king size bed was a little squeaky when turning and tossing. Even with the little defaults I really enjoyed my staying and the cottage had a home feel. Thank you for the hospitality.

  • "We were lucky enough to stay a week in this beautiful cottage."

We arrived on Sunday afternoon and really exceeded our expectations. Tastefully decorated and cozy warm. The cottage was immaculately clean and everything you could need was provided. The welcome pack was much appreciated. It provides the perfect base for exploring local areas. The weather wasn’t kind and rained and was cold for most of the week. The only problem we had was with the heating. On the Monday morning we noticed we had no heating. As we were going out it wasn’t a problem. When we returned after lunch the cottage was noticeably cold. We couldn’t find a thermostat so contacted the owner. We had a quick response and the heating was turned on by the owner. We then had heat until the last night when it was off again. We loved the cottage and the area but prefer to be in control of the heating ourselves.

  • "My mum and I had lovely mini break at the cottage, it was very comfortable and there wasn’t anything that we needed that wasn’t provided."

We were just a bit confused about the heating as it came on one night but then the next night it didn’t .. it was fine as we got the open fire going so no issue but if it was later in the year it could have been a bit chilly. No big issue. We would definitely return as it’s a great base for exploring North Yorkshire. The buns and Thanks Ann

  • "Some of the feedback may be unfair if it is we apologize, however we feel for a holiday home supplying the below items are to us essentials."

    - No toilet Brushes - No Microwave - The council refuse bin was pretty much full when we arrived meaning we had to push ours in to make it fit (Not Nice) - No Hoover - after a few days the carpets really needed cleaning and we where unable to hoover them, we are a clean and tidy couple so this was not a nice experience for us. - There was no pan scrubbers/scourers (again this may be unfair) in all other properties rented these basics have been supplied. we didn't mind paying for them it's the fact we had to wait until we took a trip into the village so pots and pans where left dirty etc which does not sit well with us. - The single most import reason we selected this property is because of its enclosed back garden, Privacy and security is something we cherish beyond anything else when selecting a property as we have 2 dogs one of which is 14 weeks old, so to be staying in a property which allowed us to let them out without fear of escape was a major comfort to us which was shattered on the Thursday when without notice a person (we assume the owner) entered the back garden through an access gate later in the afternoon without pre-warning us, i was out of the property at the time, so my partner panicked as she thought the property was being burgled, thankfully she had just brought the dogs inside which was good as one or both could have escaped if they had been out in the garden, this person then proceeded to dig vegetable out of planters without saying a word and left, the terrible part of this is they left this gate wide open with out telling us, thankfully my partner had the presence of mind to check the gate before letting the dogs out as this gate was located in a place which was not visible from the rear entrance door, we tried and could not get this gate to close properly meaning we had to keep the dogs in the house for the last 24 hours which as you can imagine was not great as we wanted them to have as much freedom as possible and the reason we chose that cottage in the first place.we appreciate the owner have the right to enter at any time but a text massage or knock on the door in advance would have been nice.we spent a reasonable amount on renting that property and felt some of it was wasted.

Firstly, and most importantly, thank you for choosing to stay at Black Horse Cottage we appreciate you choosing to stay with us. We recognise that Holidays are precious and for that reason we strive to provide the best possible experience for all of our guests. Our aim in setting up our business is to invite guests to experience an extension of our home and an environment that is everything you’d expect of a 17th Century Cottage in North Yorkshire. Unfortunately during the summer there are rare occasions where Jayne and I might need access to tend to external garden areas whilst we have guests in residence but strive to ensure that this is not disruptive to the tranquility that I’m sure you were looking for as part of your holiday experience. Our kitchen facilities do not include a microwave as it’s just not been feasible to do without compromising the functionality of this area. Provision of a hoover is something that we will consider and thank you for giving us your perspective on this. We hope that the majority of your stay was a comfortable and enjoyable experience and send you our best wishes for the remainder of the summer. Gary & Jayne Property Owner

  • "Change over not done when we arrived, so a pile of used linen and towels on the bathroom floor."

Some of the owners friends came later and changed the bed. We had to share a bath towel and wait until the following morning for fresh towels. The hob did not work so unable to cook anything which did upset our holiday as we do not go out at night and like to cook a meal in. Very dissapointed.

We take great pride in opening up what is an extension of our home for you to enjoy and are sorry to learn of your disappointment. For balance, we immediately provided access to our own kitchen when you experienced hob issues. A plumber attended when it was erroneously claimed that no hot water was available. We acknowledge the change over issues on the weekend of your stay (due to a serious family matter) and immediate agreed compensation. We strive to achieve the highest possible standards for our guests, something that is overwhelmingly reflected in our reviews. Best wishes, Gary & Jayne Property Owner

There was plenty of room for two adults, two teenage girls and our small dog. The kitchen is on the small size but it was well equipped and the welcome pack on arrival, including a home made lemon cake, was a thoughtful touch. The village was very quiet and we had both drinks and a meal at the local pub. Great location for and lots to do in the area - Richmond, Saltburn, Yarm. A very comfortable and relaxing few days away.

Lovely cosy lounge and big dining room - very small kitchen but we knew that. Loved the open fire and modern decor. The issue we had was with the heating which was meant to be on a timer but frequently didn't work - not good being cold over Christmas. I felt sorry for the owners too as they did try and sort. If the heating was sorted would happily stay again.

So sorry for the inconvenience. We did have a few issues with the heating but now resolved. We would love to host you again. Property Owner

  • "I found the property to be very nice."

The cottage was generally clean although found cobwebs around the cottage especially in shower cubicle.Did not find any Wine/Beer glasses until day of leaving as were hidden away in a painted wall cupboard in dining room which I did not feel I should open as other cupboards and drawers in that room were full of family items, / linen / Xmas Decs ect. Feel kitchen although advertised as fully equipped sadly lacking . Could do with a small microwave and Freezer . As only has a Fridge And Oven. There is also No dishwasher . Very tight on pots as only had 3 cereal Bowls . Garden and Back Yard would benefit from some TLC Sadly the Wi-Fi was non existent on last 2 days of my stay so TV was also very limited.

So sorry to hear of your issues, however our numbers are available for any issues and we always aim to put things right where possible (when told at the time). The welcome pack states where to find the glasses, so it is unfortunate that you didn't find them. The cupboards are full of items used in the cottage such as extra bedding and towels. The kitchen is advertised as small and it is just that...there is no space for a dishwasher or microwave or we would have provided one. We do tend to find that most people make adequate use of the kitchen or eat out in the local pubs. The wifi is always working/in use as we need it for work so yours probably just needed to be turned on/off again - sadly you could have text or called and we would have advised you. We will check the pots and glasses and replenish as required. Property Owner

  • "What a gem!"

The owners, Jayne and Gary, have restored this little cottage to the highest imaginable standard. As soon as you walk into the living room through the funny little hallway you get that, 'this is going to be nice' feeling. The cottage was spotlessly clean and almost everything we needed was there. There were a handful of items that would would have enhanced our stay if they had been available and we've advised Jayne and Gary of these but it did not detract our enjoyment of our stay. The living room is exceptionally comfortable and with the fire lit and a G&T in your hand, there's no better place to be on a chilly spring evening. We particularly liked the separate dining room, a rare find these days. The kitchen is small and storage space is limited. The fridge is large but there's no ice box, so keep your bottle of gin in there! The induction hob is excellent and the oven cooks evenly. There's also plenty of cutlery. Upstairs the double bed is incredibly comfortable with a lovely snuggly duvet. The towels provided are lovely and thick and there are plenty of toiletries provided. If, like me, you're over 6ft, watch your head on the beams and the low doors. On the first night having drawn the front bedroom curtains I turned round and found myself on the floor! There are plenty of walks in the area and a particularly good circular walk from the cottage which we've left details of. If you're eating out, we really recommend The Black Horse pub in the village. Everyone is very friendly and the food is excellent. Whoever came up with the idea of a pork and black pudding burger is a genius! Finally, if you look after paint work on your car you might want to consider covering it while parked outside the cottage. Next door have ten bird feeders hanging up and the birds queue up in the trees above and pebbledash your pride and joy!

Beautifully presented throughout everything feels new and clean. The cottage is clearly centuries old full of character and original beamed ceilings. The location is in close proximity to picturesque and historic walking routes to suit all capabilities. There were three of us in our party one being our dog Duggie, who enjoyed the open fire as much as we did. We were all made to feel very welcome by the owners who had left us a comprehensive welcome pack in the separate dining room. Plenty of space upstairs with pleasant views across the well stocked cottage garden. But watch your head on the low beams a one off knock is a kind reminder that you are staying in a centuries old cottage and common experience for me. The WiFi is excellent and there is a smart TV so no shortage of entertainment if needed. The rear court yard is large, enclosed and feels safe and secure. Swainby village and the cottage could not be more peaceful and I can confidently recommend it. We look forward to staying there again soon.

About the location

SWAINBY

Swainby is a village in the Hambleton district of North Yorkshire. Swainby is located at the north-western corner of the North York Moors National Park. The characteristics of the village and the surrounding area consist of traditional Yorkshire dry stone walls, hills, sheep, heather and moorland. The village is close to the ruins of Whorlton Castle. In the 19th century the housing of miners who worked the nearby hills for ironstone and jet led to an expansion of the village. Swainby contains two public houses, The Blacksmiths Arms and The Black Horse along with The Rusty Bike – a bike inspired café serving scrummy breakfast and lunches.
