  • "We have just had the most wonderful stay at Albany House."

Situated in the perfect position in the town and with ample parking, the house itself was clean, spacious, tastefully furnished and very welcoming. Breakfast round the large kitchen table was the perfect start to the day. Everyone staying had a great night’s sleep and all bedding and towels were spotless and there were no problems with water or the showers. Yes, it was a little tired in places but it added to the charm of this lovely home and we can’t wait to come back.

  • "Albany House's location was great, ideal for us a family of 8, 5 adults and 3 children."

Although the house is on a hill, we found it ideal for town and harbour. The house was generally clean although there were a few issues regarding its age, ie mould in the bathrooms, drain smells and just general signs of wear and tear. Having said that, we were very comfortable and the heating was very good for cooler days. The parking is very difficult, there being a very tight space for only two cars. Also access and leaving the property by car is also difficult because of the very narrow streets and one way system, which was very hard to figure out! The children loved the house because of its spaciousness. I would recommend Albany House but to be aware that it is an old house and it needs some updating and maintenance.

  • "This is a lovely big comfortable house in a perfect location."

It's great to find somewhere central with parking. Having stayed in October we were especially glad that the heating worked really well. It is beautifully decorated with only one or two areas of minor end-of-season damage. The living room has plenty of comfortable seating for 9 and there's a big table in the kitchen. The only real drawback is that the first floor bedrooms are much larger and have en suites, as opposed to the smaller bedrooms on the second floor - but this is an unavoidable part of the layout and there was no problem with any of the rooms. One thing that should be fixed is that the showers were slow-draining. Thank you, would definitely stay here again.

  • "Prepare to be holiday cat fished !"

Misleading photos of the property, not up to date or accurate, the photos taken almost a decade ago when the property was obviously well kept and beautiful, today this is not the case, the photos outside are not an accurate reflection, the garden was horrible, dead plants, tired furniture, cigarette butts, the kitchen small cluttered and not well kept, overall a very disappointing booking for the money charged. Walls without plaster, cracks, damp patches, kitchen floor knackered, the black bedrooms bathroom dirty tired damaged with cracked toilet that leaks and very outdated, the boiler leaking with a known fault that resulted in it stopping during our stay and plumbers attending, the house cold and damp as the boiler not fit for purpose….. I could continue but won’t. The property location was central, and had parking, this would be the only positive of the property. I’ve used Sykes before, but in my opinion this once beautiful property needs delisting and bringing back to a lettable standard. £800 plus for a 4 night out of season break I expect better, not stained bedding, not dirty run down council flat vibes, and shame on you Sykes for using photos taken 10 years ago, the furniture is different, the slabs in the garden don’t even match them photos are that old, and you’ve a nerve to charge a £150 housekeeping bond

  • "Fabulous property!"

Had everything we needed. Absolutely brilliant location, just a short walk into the town - our teenage boys loved being able to explore the area, sights and bakeries before the whole house had stirred!! Our only recommendation for the house would be - thicker curtains required. Although the sun shining through the windows did make us get up and out early ( just a little too early for us)!! Already planning next year's holiday to Whitby!

  • "We enjoyed our stay at Albany House very much."

It is a large property, well furnished, with ample space and lots of bathrooms, parking for two cars, ideal for a larger group. My wife and I stayed there with our daughter's family, six people in total. There were a few maintenance issues which I have reported to Sykes Cottages and, unusually, no welcome pack on arrival. Well situated for the harbour, station and Pannett Park, just a few minutes away and only 10 minutes walk from the beach.

Thank you for your feedback it is appreciated. We are glad that you enjoyed your stay. Property Owner

As others have mentioned in their reviews, the plumbing is very iffy and the house could be cleaner. The knob to one of the top floor bedrooms sheered off, locking the occupant in who then had to be let out. On a plus, the bedding and towels are top notch and the property is ideal for large groups as it big and spacious and on the whole we did enjoy our stay there.

Main bathroom, and front ensuite very dated, and also plumbing issues with ensuite and bad smell. Had to call sykes to come and fix during stay. Also only 1 bathroom had a lock on it,which isn't ideal with 2 different families staying and teenagers! Although back king size bedroom was clean and comfortable I think the others weren't as good, according to my family. Beds in twin bedroom uncomfortable, and front king 4 poster room wasn't cleaned well. Overall enjoyable holiday but house could be improved with a little money spent on it!

This is our second stay there. It was great for my family, its central location works great for us, as well as having its own onsite parking. Some areas were a little dated, and all the baths/showers are very slow to drain, meaning you have to stop the shower half way through, or risk it over flowing (especially on the 2nd floor shower) but it doesn’t detract from a lovely house!

  • "Had a lovely stay!"

House is gorgeous and very clean on arrival. Happy with the stay just a few things that we found a little frustrating (not anyones fault) Due to the house been right next door to the fish shop i came back to the house and found someone sat in our garden eating there fish and chips, i asked them to move and they refused and was very rude. We then unfortunately woke up one morning to find the garden with take away wrappers and food all over the floor and the furniture everywhere. I appreciate this is out of your control but maybe putting a sign up on the front gate or gated padlock to stop people passing by coming in. Also the second bedroom on the landing has a very bad smell of sewage. We were actually unable to use this bathroom due to the smell, not very ideal when your paying alot of money to stay somewhere. It seemed to get worse when other bathrooms were been used.

  • "Albany provides an excellent stay option while exploring Whitby."

Situated in the town center, it offers utmost convenience for the people we were assisting. The beach, arcades, and restaurants are all within walking distance, and key attractions in Whitby are just a 5-10 minute drive away, such as the market and other must-visit spots. The only challenge we encountered was with parking due to the narrow street, but we successfully managed to handle that. Apart from that, the house's superb location proved to be strategically advantageous, allowing us to save on fuel by easily walking to various destinations.

It was reported early, we were hoping, (hoping!) that it would be replaced, and it wasn't! Also reported that the fridge door was in need of some TLC, guess what, it wasn't. Those were the negatives, overall we had a most enjoyable time.

Thank you for your feedback. The plumber identified the problem immediately but unfortunately we were unable to rectify it during your stay. The issue has now been addressed. Property Owner

  • "We have stayed at this property 4 times over the last few years and noticed the decline in the maintenance of the property."

It is marketed as 5 star, which may have been appropriate a few years ago but not now. We noted several problems in the visitor book last year which are still there currently, and with the absence of the visitor book would suggest the owner doesn’t want guests to see issues aren’t being addressed. All the showers do not drain correctly. A faulty flickering lamp in the living room knocks out the main light and tv when it flickers. The cleaning isn’t 100% with dusty surfaces and skirtings. Decorating is looking tired and dirty, with plaster stud holes in the walls in the room we stayed in. Having to strip beds when leaving isn’t a norm for 5 star accommodation and highlights the cleaning issue as the mattress protector in our room was marked and dirty. Kitchen fridge door is on an angle. We decided to re-book from last years visit as the location and parking works for us, but have decided this was our last visit to Albany House as decline and lack of maintenance to the property doesn’t justify the rental fee.

The Christmas tree was a lovely welcome on our arrival BUT we were disappointed in the lack of cleanliness with dust in wardrobes dirtying our clothes, cobwebs, and moldy window frames. Also there were only a few clothes hangers and problems with maintenance such as no lock on a bathroom door, tired kitchen units, a shower tray which didn’t drain and was in danger of overflowing. Also this is the first time in a Sykes cottage that we haven’t had a welcome pack with tea and coffee which meant we had to wait for our supermarket delivery to have a drink. On the positive side we were able to prepare a Christmas meal for 9 in the kitchen and had a really enjoyable stay. For the price next year we won’t book again.

Clean, comfortable and ideally situated! Our only negative was that on Thursday night after/during a torrential rain storm we discovered a leak from the loft “ games room” which went through in to the twin bedroom below in several places making one of the beds wet and into the light switch electrics causing a sizzling noise from the switch, hence we dare not use the light or the room for fear of a short and possibly even a fire hazard? We reported it to yourselves at 9am Friday and we’re told someone would be round to assess it! We went out for the day and upon our return hadn’t heard back ,so I phoned again to be told they would look in to what was happening with it and would get back to us!!! Disappointingly we heard nothing at all from any one from Sykes ! The four members of the family on the top floor ended up sleeping in the living room for 2 nights as we were worried because the leak had affected the electrics !! We actually left a bowl and a bucket up there to catch the leaks ! I do not feel this was very good customer service from yourselves as we had no feed back about our problem from you at all, no follow up apology in fact no communication at all!! I just hope the problem was rectified before the nxt family arrived today!!

House is very spacious and decorated and furnished to high standard The bedrooms and bathrooms were all great with good showers and water pressure Towels and bedding were great. There were some issues with cobwebs, we found hairs on one of the window seats General debris under the microwave, bin needed cleaning and the detergent drawer on the washing machine was quite disgusting and had to be cleansed thoroughly before use. Also the kitchen was a disappointment Its not equipped for family of 8 or 9 The fridge is far too small and had a large ice box taking up all of the room and isnt needed when there is a freezer next to it I would have expected a large larder fridge in a kitchen of this size It was a pain having to go into the utility room all the time to the other spare fridge There isnt much work top space when serving up and cooking I think the kitchen is badly planned and needs an island to increase work space. The grill on the range cooker was useless you can only use the front part of it and the pan kept falling off the shelf if you pushed it too far in and its very small The radio didnt seem to work which wasnt too big a problem as you could get it on the TV Although were lots of pans there there were no serving dishes or large bowls and I had to buy some. The cafetierre leaked all over when pouring. TV in lounge quite small and the stand does not fit the decor and when we tried to use netflix we were unable to as too many other devices (not ours) were logged in. We did enjoy our stay and house is in a good location and very warm and comfortable Parking is a bonus but is very tight (we were warned of this in the info) Just a few niggles and didnt quite make the mark for us. The little touches like providing a welcome bag including milk, tea and coffee means we can walk straight in and make a cuppa - wonderful after a long journey! The facilities provided in the kitchen mean we don't have to bring a car full of equipment to feed a houseful around the enormous kitchen table (the slow cooker is a godsend for a family meal after a day out exploring).
