  • "We left a day early so only stayed 2 nights ."

It was warmer outside than indoors . The thermostat for the heating was ornamental rather than useful

  • "Nice cottage with some lovely touches however the smell of mold was off putting as we could smell it all the time, but we found it was very clean."

Also we feel that the stairs are extremely unsafe I myself slipped and managed to save myself from a nasty fall. Outside the back door could do with a tidy up. In general the cottage is lovely but I don't think we would stay again mainly because of the issues mentioned.

  • "Overall, the house was nicely furnished."

Unfortunately, the inaccurate information about location ('right turning 50 yards after Yorkshire Cottages office' rather than 'immediately after') meant we ended up going round the one-way system again trying to find it. There was no scratch-off parking card in the property, which meant we had to drive back into town to find somewhere that sold them. We drove to the Co op (as it was the only place we knew with free parking). They didn't sell them, but a staff member gave us a parking disc. Fortunately, we found a traffic warden near the property who showed us where we could park overnight. By this time, we'd wasted over an hour of our holiday, and tempers were frayed. Not the start we wanted for a break that was meant to be a treat! Perhaps you should consider posting the scratch cards to customers in advance of their holiday to avoid this happening again. Inside the property, there is a strong smell of damp in the kitchen and black mould on the stair wall. I have a rare lung disease (aspergillosis) which is caused (and exacerbated) by black mould, so I was unable to use the kitchen. Again - very disappointing. Finally, the mirrors in the bedrooms need hanging on the walls. I had to sit on the floor to be able to use the mirror to do my hair and make up. Not ideal!

Thank you for your feedback. For future reference, YCC provides a phone that you could have rang and we would have provided you with parking permits straight away. Thank you for bringing to our attention the arrival information, we have changed this so the directions should be clearer. We will investigate the other points raised. Property Owner

The big problem was the 8am till 4pm bang, bang, bang and load music, coming from the cottage next door but one, with the work men! We never got told that there would be work going off. We booked this cottage as it was said it was in a quiet location.... But it was far from this. We go away to relax not to be woken up at 8am with loads of noise and banging!!! Am absolutely fuming about this as that cottage cost me alot of money. We definitely won't be staying ithere again! and I feel sorry for the next customers that arrive there!

Thank you for your feedback. We are sorry that you have had a noisy stay. We were unaware of the building work happening during your stay in the cottage, it was something out of our control. Property Owner

  • "The property is on a quiet, quaint road and we had no issues with noise."

Despite the mention of the possibility of stairs being an issue, we didn’t find this a problem as long as we took care - the steps are quite shallow and some of the ceilings on the stairwells are low - but we found them ok. The kitchen had all utensils we needed for a real self catering break and there were books and games provided too. Beds were clean and comfortable. We had one issue, with the cleanliness, which was an issue at the start of our break as we did have to clean. There was quite a lot of dust throughout, the carpets needed vacuuming, the bottom of the toilets needed extra attention, crumbs were on the work surfaces in the kitchen and our dog found a bone of some description on the kitchen floor, also the front door was really quite grubby inside. This has been fed back to Sykes already and so hopefully this will not be an issue for future bookings. We were advised that the cottage are not obliged to provide cleaning products, which seemed odd if they’d like you to keep the place clean, and so we did have to purchase our own antibacterial cleaner. Dishwasher tablets were plentiful however. Be aware that milk and coffee aren’t necessarily provided on short breaks, but there are a few little shops nearby to purchase these. We love Whitby, and hopefully our feedback is taken as constructive rather than negative - the hubby also mentioned that an oven glove would be helpful!

  • "We've had a fantastic time!"

The cottage is lovely and cosy with everything you need. We stayed a week and only used the car once, there is so much to do and the buses get you up and down the coast, so our 3 days on the Cleveland Way were made very easy! We love beer so our recommendations are Beer O'Clock, Arch and Abbey, Esk Vaults and the Abbey Brewery. The Hart Inn at Sandsend is also good and a fab walk along the beach and back. Thanks for sharing this lovely cottage and thank you for the delicious goodies.

  • "We stayed here a year ago exactly and once again enjoyed it!"

A beautiful cottage in a perfect location. Super clean and beautiful even let us have a late check out. We were super lucky! Would recommend the Esk Vaults, The Endeavour, The Dolphin, The Duke of York, Sander's Yard Bistro, Rusty Shears, the Thai restaurant, Cosa Nostra. There are too many to name, had an amazing time, can't wait to come again.

  • "Lovely clean comfortable cottage in the heart of Whitby."

Lovely area and central to everything and not far from railway station either. When we arrived we couldn’t get into the first floor bedroom and rang to say we were having problems within in ten minutes there was a maintenance man there who fixed the problem. That’s excellent service. We were unable to use cooker as we couldn’t get it to work but that was prob us we couldn’t find main switch to turn on. No probs there was plenty places to eat nearby. Fabulous place.

  • "Family of 4, 2 adults and 2 children (4 and 5 year old)."

Visiting for 7 nights. Pros - Fantastic location for seeing Whitby (cafes and pubs within a 2 min walk, harbour a slow 10 min walk down the hill). -Comfy Beds -Beautiful kitchen -Living room size / comfort ok for small family of 4 - responsive property management to any slight issues / questions we have. - just set off the main streets so fairly quiet location and felt pretty safe however you do still get some street noise in peak hours. - nice welcome hamper - coffee machine - huge family sized cooker - modern bath tub / shower Cons - as stated in description property is over 4 floors which takes some getting used to, (1 room per floor), steps are really steep, so would not recommend to anyone with kids under 6 ish and anyone with mobility issues. Zip link bed is actually a double bed so zip link was never an option which was disappointing, which lead to us sharing beds (2 doubles) instead of having twin beds for the kids. - some windows / decor / fixtures are starting to show signs of wear. Windows and door handles really stiff, Would benefit from a maintenance person to attend just to sort lots of little like this issues but, however we appreciate the age of the property. - parking, although we are provided with a pass, it’s a bit of a lottery in terms of how close you can park, there are options a 2 min walk away which is viewable from the rear of the property if you are in luck. However you can find yourself walking 5 /10 minutes away to the car if your luck isn’t in and are less organised. (Parking Guides are provided). If you happy to park £9 per day there is parking to the rear of the property in a public car park 2 mins walk away if you are stuck for options. - Im 6ft 2 and found it hard to gain access to the top Bedroom and kitchen due to the low beams,I had to duck / crouch on entrance / exit after learning this lesson the hard way. You do get used to this though. - lacked some basic provisions such as bin bags, toilet roll, soap etc Over all, if you understand the age of the property, and are able to work round the steps issue, it’s a nice place to stay, it’s got some nice charm about the property with some lovely modern touches and the location absolutely makes it worth it.

No milk on arrival which is standard so we had cake but couldn't make a cuppa and more rails for the steep stairs would be good. We liked the cottage but the standard of cleanliness was not the usual standard we're used to. Lovely cottage and good location though

  • "The property was exactly as advertised."

Excellent condition, excellent facilities and in a very central location. We could not fault the cottage, the stairs are very steep but we were advised of this prior to arriving and the cottage is a little awkward to find but it still made for a very enjoyable stay.

  • "Anchor Cottage is not a safe accommodation because the very steep n many steps of staircase over three floors did not have adequate hand rails."

There needs to be a clear warning about limited free parking on street n to allow extra spends of £9 per 24 hr parking in designated car park., It was stressful negotiating the steep staircase and did spoil our holiday to some extent,
